First of all, let me say that this game is the only real shooting game on the PC-FX. Being that, a lot of PC-FX owners wanted this game, and we were all hoping that this shooter would live up to at least the quality of a TurboDuo shooter - and it does.
The graphics in "Zeroigar" are overall, very good. There are a lot of elements to this game that makes it worthy of a 32-Bit machine - such as transparency effects, rotation & scaling, very detailed boss ships/characters, and more. Also found in the backgrounds are multiple layers of parallax scaling, which makes it look even better to look at. The Japanese Anime found all through the game is very effective at advancing the story line, and is of high quality.
The sound FX in “Zeroigar” is pretty much average stuff. You can find some digital effects here and there, but I found myself saying, “hey, that explosion sound is the same one found in Blazing Lazers!” - As you start each level, or come upon a boss character, a small voice segment appears with your character saying something. The voices are very clear and easy to understand (if you know Japanese).
The music is something that I rate very seriously. I love the music in video games, and some games (like Ys I&II) I still listen to in my CD player. In “Zeroigar,” I would say that the music is average to great. Some levels have the standard game music, which is perfectly OK, but not something you would want to record on a tape and listen to over and over in your car or something. But I found on later levels that the music gets better, and becomes something you would want to listen to over and over.
I only have a few suggestions on how to make this game better. First, more selections of main weapons would have been better. In “Zeroigar,” you can only power-up your main weapon (which is your standard single-shot gun). Granted you can power-up your main weapon many times, but something else more powerful would have been better IMO. And if you die during the level, no matter where you are, you start back at the beginning of the level! As far as I could tell, you have unlimited continues, but only one life.
Even with the above mentioned suggestions, “Zeroigar” is a very well done shooter for the PC-FX, with a good selection of enemies, and bad bosses. Difficulty is average to hard, depending on which special weapon you choose, but you will find yourself continuing over and over on some levels that have some very tight spots. If you have a PC-FX, you owe it to yourself to buy this game! - Aaron Nanto
