Chip Chan Kick!

Added 9.15.00 | Review by Aaron Nanto

If there has ever been a game that made you go “hmmm..” (in a good way) this is the one.

Chip Chan Kick is by far the most fun and entertaining Action / Strategy / Arcade / Puzzle game on the PC-FX to date.  I am sure some of you who are reading this have played the game Parasol Stars on the TurboGrafx? Well, if you even remotely liked that game, Chip Chan Kick is exactly like that, but a lot better!

Gameplay in Chip Chan Kick is very easy to learn, and basically controls exactly like Parasol Stars. You control either Chip or Chap (Chap doesn’t seem to be “into it”as much as Chip is) and you have, what I like to call, “squishy blobs with eyes” that you can throw to hit enemies, which stun them for a limited amount of time. Before the stunned enemy gets back on his feet, you need to go over to him and kick him off of the screen (which is done automatically). After all of the enemies are kicked, the stage is completed.

There are 10 stages to a level, and there are (I believe) 5 main areas.  On the 10th level, you are basically at the boss, which all of them are fairly hard to kill. Each boss starts out as a “little person” (like yourself), and after you hit her (most of the bosses are Female) then she jumps off of the screen, and you see this full-screen sized monster/machine trying to blast you out of the level. You will find some of the bosses soooooo difficult to kill you will want to “kick” somebody yourself! (pun intended)

Getting on to my favorite part of a game, the music. I must say that this game has a ROCKING soundtrack. I very much love game music, and Chip Chan Kick has the best around. The music is your typical “game music” sounding, but has a lot of very catchy tunes that you will want to listen to over and over and over....

The animation scenes are a mixed bag of PC-FX FMV, and RAM inducing fun. The intro to Chip Chan Kick is entirely FMV, but every one after that (excluding the ending since I have not beat it yet), is loaded (I assume) into the PC-FX RAM memory. This brought back many memories of the anime scenes from Ys and other PC Engine/Duo games that had the same kind of animation. I have always liked a system better when it can generate it’s own sound and graphics, instead of taking the easy road of FMV or CD audio tracks in games.

Other features in the game include a CD Audio/Sound FX test menu, photos and character interviews with the Chip and Chap voice actresses, 2-player mode, power-ups during each level, and lots more. Having said that, I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants some un-serious gaming fun! - Aaron Nanto
