Hello all,

A friend sent me a supergrafx to take a look at.  Console play PCE games fine, however SuperGrafx games play ok but have corrupted graphics.

My understanding is that the supergrafx has two sets of PCE engine chips, and a custom chip that combines them for supergrafx games.

I would like to tackle this problem logically, by creating a list of troubleshooting tasks to do.  If anyone can help out with identifying what i should do that would be greatly appreciated.

1. First id like to inspect the motherboard, and ensure there are no broken traces.
2. maybe replace all electro capacitors, believe there are around 20.
3. identify what PCE chips are exclusive for the supergrafx?  perhaps someone can help me with this?  as im not sure.
4. maybe look at the vram as being the issue?
5. anything else anyone can recommend?

Thanks,

Mal

sound issues have been resolved.

lifted the OP AMP and cleaned underneath with IPA and fiberglass pen.  replaced OP AMP with new ones.  and replaced the two 10uf capacitors.

now all is working perfectly.

Hello all,

a mate of mine sent me a DUO with audio issues.  it has had all the capacitors replaced a while back, however it seems like some audio channels are missing.

i didn't notice it at first, but was very obvious when compared to a duo-r.

made a video of the problem console and a DUO-R
my next step is to inspect the board, and pay close attention to the OP AMPS.  i do have some new TL072c OP amps, does anyone know if they are compatible?

Thanks

righteo

so disassembled the duo and looked at what was done.  confirmed all capacitors are correct with polarity right.

turned the motherboard over, and noticed something really obvious pin 31 and 30 on c6280 were shorted instead of 29 and 30.  so have removed the short and connected 29 and 30 and all is working now.

lesson for me, double check tripple check before turning anything on.  fortunately no harm was caused to the system.

hopefully no one else makes this mistake, however if they do and are scratching their heads then take note of my mistake.

cheers

Thanks for the reply

Seems the buttons that do work do different actions. Run button seems to be up and action button 1.  The mappings are all out. D pad does not work at all

will take a closer look at the via's

thanks mate

am yet to check the vias for continuity top to bottom.  however another observation the IC sony cxd1167q gets quite hot, there also is damage very close by from the leaked capacitor.

my thoughts are to take the sony chip off, and inspect for damage.

Really appreciate the replies fellas.

checked and i had replaced the 47uf capacitors near the LED, also checked they had continuity to the correct areas.

i went ahead and changed the rest of the capacitors, still same issues :(

Thanks Nick,

I will check out the crystal tomorrow :)  will let you know how i get on.

Hello

looking for some assistance/advice from anyone :) regarding an issue with a PCE DUO PWA-3285-A

This console had the typical bad capacitors, and one had caused alot of damage to the traces near the LED around c135 top and bottom of the motherboard.  I managed to repair the traces, and now the system turns on and i can play HU card games no problems.

The problem is that the disc keeps spinning, and even goes when the lid is open or closed with or without a disk.

I have replaced most of the capacitors, have not replaced the ones near the voltage regulators and the AV jack and headphone jack.

can provide photos if necessary :)
