Hello everyone!

Brand new to this forum and the PC Engine as well.  I've never had a turbo of any kind in my entire life.  I've been lead to believe that I should find a Turbo Duo R/RX.  I'm good with electronics so I can recap and RGB mod myself but it would be nice to just buy one ready to go.  Just came here looking for one at a fair price.

I'm 31 and enjoy collecting/playing retro/modern games.  I purchased a Sony BVM D24E1WU for a steal earlier this year and am currently working towards getting everything piped into it.  Also, the number one reason I am here is because Game Sack made me realize how many awesome games I missed out on.  I was searching for good places to pick up a Turbo and my search led me here and lo and behold Joe is a mod here.  Pretty damn cool.

I don't know the culture here yet, sorry if this request is somehow in bad form but thanks for looking!

Usually people wait awhile before posting a WTB thread, as it will immediately incur wrath.

Other than that, welcome to the forum and good luck with the PVM.

Welcome to the forum.

Can I ask a question about the Sony BVM D24E1WU.  How the hell do you hook up a retro system to it?  I almost bought one once but it seems like the inputs on the back are very unique.  Not sure how I would use it with lets say the TurboGrafx or SNES.  TIA

I think those have a bnc connector so you need an adapter like this in order to hookup an scart cable.

Very helpful thank you.  So I need an RGB modded Duo with an scart out and then get that adapter.  Seems like a lot of work and a lot of money to get it running properly on a SONY BVM monitor.  Is the image quality really that much better to warrant all this extra hassle and money?  I mean it my DUO looks great already on my Sony Trinitron.  Thoughts?

yes, it looks a lot better.  but some people dont care about image quality that much and are fine with composite.  we did not know any better back in the 90s so if you are used to composite it might not be worth it for you.

Not sure if that model BVM needs a sync stripper also.  I have a bvm-20F1U and it works fine with composite video as the sync signal.

here is a video of one in action
also the one the OP has

They use BNC connectors.  I had never seen BNC before in my life but they are still in use today in security systems and readily available at Fry's.  They are just an alternative to RCA style plugs and feature a locking mechanism to keep the wires from falling out.  There is a female scart to BNC + RCA stereo plug that you can find from Retro Console Accessories on eBay.  You can buy BNC to RCA adapter and plug a standard component cable right into the back of it.  In fact, the green input will take composite and that's how I play my consoles that I don't have RGB worked out on yet.  It takes all kinds of sync and I haven't found anything that gave it any problems.  I do not own a sync stripper and I 100% believe that is unnecessary for this BVM.

I love the BVM, I love it death.    I too grew up with composite but there is something really special about playing on such a nice display.  To me it is similar to playing a rom vs the original cart, there is something special in the presentation that gives the game more life.  I have a component video card in the BVM as well so I have been playing Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 on it.  You can buy BNC to RCA converter and plug a standard component cable right into the back of it.  Being able to play 240p, 480p/i, 720p, and 1080i games, on every generation of console I own, is a very satisfying!

Curious how RGB looks on  the BVM.  I use RGB on my BenQ monitor using an upscaler and while nice the image is clear but pretty pixelated.  I actually prefer playing my s-video modded tg16 on my crt  to my rgb duo.

I posted a couple videos from youtube above.  those are just the 1st 2 i came across.  im sure there are a lot more that show how good it looks.  IMO nothing looks better than the picture on an RGB crt.  The framemeister is good and allows display on a bigger TV though which is why I have both.

ActionJackson

Well as soon as I get a Turbo with RGB I'll post some pictures and we can see how they compare.  I totally understand people being fine with composite since we grew up with that.  I think s-video is an excellent option, especially for people who are not using BVM/PVM/XM/etc.  On the other hand, how many games did I actually own/play growing up?  Probably less than 100 before N64/Playstation came along.  This means the nostalgia factor only affects a hand full of games while I can enjoy gaming's entire catalogue at what is arguably one of the best possible analog pictures.  To each their own but I highly recommend the BVM if you can find one at a great price.

Oh I want one believe me.  I do not want the extra cables, modding, and adapters necessary however.  Maybe some day.

Purchased one from mickcris.  Arrived quickly and as described with great extras he threw in for me.  It's working great and couldn't be happier.  I was initially having problems with the picture and he took the time to help me troubleshoot and even sent me a second cable to try and help me out.  Ultimately the problem was on my end and had nothing to do with his mods.  Now it is working great and I'm very thankful!

Good to hear post some pics when you can would love to see the BVM in action.

Took these images with my iPhone.  Turbo Duo to BVM via scart.  Colors are washed out considerably compared to the source.  I tried to get the colors right but I don't know a lot about photography.

Zoom in a little more, would ya? :)  Looks pretty nice, I guess you can capitalize on PS2 widescreen modes with that monitor as well.  Gotta get me a PVM one of these days.

ActionJackson

Yeah my bad with the giant pics, been a while since I uploaded pics to a board.  I just wanted to show how consistent and even the lines are.  The widescreen is great!  It's what pushed me over the edge and made me want to track one down.  It also has under scan for both 16:9 and 4:3 so you can switch between consoles without having to mess with changing the geometry.

Nice BVM! I just got a little 13" the other day and am going to add a Component (yes, not RGB yet; want compatibility with my LCD TV as well...) out to my Duo-R. Until then, I'm at least enjoying the 0 frames of lag over composite...

destructive cactus

Ah, here's a (hopefully not too huge) comparison of composite versus component on a 13" Sony BVM:
