Which games do I HAVE to get?

Starfighter

So, I recently got my first PC Engine and I have no idea what to get to it. I've seen a few scrambled lists here and there that don't tell me all that much, and the game-library is quite a jungle.. I like shooters (that's the main reason I got it in the first place), platformers, puzzle games, fighters and sometimes racing games. I DON'T like RPGs, simulators (life, love, dating etc) or anything sports related. If you guys don't feel like rambling on about your favorites in mentioned genres maybe there are some competent and accurate lists on the subject you can refer me to? Preferably lists with explanations/pictures of each game. :) Thanks!

Starfighter

Oh, and the games I got now is:

Heavy Unit
Super Star Soldier
Momotaro Katsugeki
Dragon Spirit
R-Type (R-Type I and R-Type II)

Starfighter

Sweet! I wrote down Soldier Blade (I plan on getting more of the Soldier-games anyway, they seem very nice) but the other two wasn't hucards. Maybe I should've said from the beginning that I have a coregrafx - and even if I'm up for a duo in the future I'll focus on hucards for the time being. :)

Either one, 94 has a better single player mode. I like 93 Battle Mode better cause I think it's a little simpler for the average friend/family member whose never played. My Avatar is 93 cause I had a Turboduo as a kid and that's the game that has the most nostalgia for me. Didn't play 94 till I became an adult and a collector.

Some really nice games mentioned I see (I checked them out at pc engine software bible since you guys don't seem to motivate your namedrops! ;)). This is awesomesauce!

We're teaching you how to research! :)

As far as Fighters go, you need a CD system for it.  Then, you can get Asuka 120%, and Advanced VG.   Street Fighter 2 for HuCard is good stuff too

also for CD, are moar puzzle and platformer games.

Did we recommend Cadash yet?  Thats another kickass one.

Starfighter

Haha, well, that's also a way to look at it. :) It's just that sometimes screenshots and maybe an occasional gameplay-link isn't enough for me, I like to hear more thoughts about what makes the games great and who is a better fit for that job than the very persons that likes them?

Okay so the fighters are as good as out for now, SF2 looks sweet but it's not very interesting for me anymore since I've played it since childhood on so many different platforms (I also have the real deal, arcade). Isn't there any puzzlers on HuCard worth getting, or do you mean there's more on CD (obviously it is, but.. yeah.. I'm just mumbling). You haven't mentioned Cadash yet, but now it's going on my list!

Arkhan Asylum

Puzzle games I like:

Boxyboy, Tricky Kick, Zipang (Solomons Key!), Circus Lido (<3 <3 <3), Chew Man Fu (Be Ball on PCE).

There are some others but I dont dig them as much.

if you dig Parasol Stars, Don Doko Don is fucking classic.  Garden Gnomes man.

and when you get a CD, you need Splash Lake.  you also need Pop 'n Magic, and Rainbow Islands (Bubble Bobble 2) , assuming you liked Parasol Stars.  Pop n' Magic is easily in my top 5 games on CD.

Thank you everyone, I have like 20 must have games now! Just keep 'em coming! :)

I didn't know Don Doko Don were on PC Engine, I've just played it through on some kind of collection for PS2. I loved it so I have to get it! I like cute games like Bubble Bubble (and Rainbow Island for that matter, I have it on Sega Master System) so Parasol Stars is probably going first when I'm getting out on the hunt to enlarge the PCE-collection. Ah, who am I fooling, it'll probably be one of the shooters mentioned in this thread, I have a weakness against them. I have to buy Parasol Image Thunder '90 first.. ^^

S.C.I. "Special Criminal Investigations" (fun cause the point is to actually ram other cars and shoot'em with a bazooka! plus you're driving a '90 Nissan 300ZX, how sweet is that?) It's the unofficial sequel to Chase HQ but with much improved graphics.

Yeah it's like.. they are so boring. Snoozeville deluxe! But sometimes I can't help myself. Super Mario Kart and Dirt 2 are to good examples. I love them, but I shouldn't! :) I'm going to look up Motoroader and S.C.I because they definately doesn't sound like your typical yawning-fest of a driving game. Thanks!

I've been a member of several collection-listing-sites before but it never worked out for me. I have plans on building my own little site with pictures and stuff about all my games, I just have to find the time. I am currently working full time (for no pay, mind you) with a videogame videoreview-program series on the side (in swedish so I'm not gonna link it here) and I have recently moved and have all this things I should build, buy and what not. I have a collection of 500+ games as well, so if I'm gonna have front-side-and-back-pictures with additional info about every title it's going to take quite some time to get the site complete. But - it's coming for sure. Someday. :)

It has to be a liiiiittle "cooler" over there I guess. :) It's like Rockman -> Mega Man. That always baffled me since Mega Drive wasn't cool enough. In Rockmans case, Mega would be much cooler, but in Mega Drives case - Genesis was teh shizzle. Anyway, thank you for clearing that out for me!

_Paul

This list is obviously biased with personal opinion, but what list isn't?

ESSENTIALS

Parodius
A top quality conversion, Parodius is a magnificent shoot 'em up which Konami did a remarkable job in bringing to the Engine, not suffering from the awful slowdown that is game-breaking in Gradius. It's cute, funnny, odd and has some great graphical effects. The sound is decent but not outstanding, although the classical tunes are catchy. It also provides enough challenge to keep you playing without it being unfair.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Parodius.htm

Jackie Chan
Fast paced action platforming at its finest. Jackie Chan is a highly polished package and shines particularly in the lengthy opening levels. Great music and graphics enhance the experience and the difficulty is paced very carefully. One of the best of its kind.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Jackie_Chan.htm

PC Genjin series
Despite comparably primitive (har har) graphics, I find the first PC Genjin provides me with the most satisfying platforming experience of the three. It's a fairly easy game to complete, but so nicely designed that it is also the one that I replay the most. The second in the series takes the visuals to a new standard, and remains one of the best platformers on the Engine, despite some gameplay tweaks that I did not like. Go for the third if you like the others, but the game is somehow less engaging than its predecessors.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/PC_Kid.htm

Coryoon
A cute horizontal shoot 'em up that throws sprites galore and loads of parallax scrolling at you, and also has a wonderful soundtrack also (music is very important to me in games). The gameplay is solid and a lot of fun with the screen getting very busy at times, and it maks a nice change from spaceship shooters.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Coryoon.htm

Kyuukyoku Tiger
Forget Raiden, 2KT is a very tough, but superbly crafted vertical shooter. Beefy, thudding sound effects, awesome music and functional, yet somehow quite attractive, overhead graphics enhance the game. It gets hard and I hate hard games, yet I love this one. That should say something about how good it is.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Kyukyoku_Tiger.htm

Bloody Wolf
There just something really special about this game, it's hard to put your finger on it. It has its faults - slowdown can be frustrating at times - but the whole package is a great experience and the best game of its type on the machine (far better than Red Alert or the poor Die Hard). It has some nicely drawn environments and the music sounds great with headphones on.
http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Bloody_Wolf.htm

'Soldier' games
You already have SSS, but should also pick up Soldier Blade and Final Soldier as they are both quality examples of the genre. Gunhed is often praised but I find that game a rather hollow and sometimes dull experience.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Soldier_Blade.htm

PC Denjin
Similar to Coryoon in many ways, yet a step up, this game is full of variety, mad special weapons and brilliant design. It's a very satisfying game to play and you never feel that it treats you unfairly. Full of imagination.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/PC_Denjin.htm

Devil Crash
If you think pinball on a console sounds boring then that's even more of a reason to buy this to prove yourself wrong. Devil Crash is the best pinball game on console - ever. Utterly addictive, you'll always come back to it, drawn in by the atmospheric graphics and perfectly suited music.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Devil_Crash.htm

GIVE THESE GAMES A CHANCE

Atomic Robo-kid Special
A unique shoot 'em up with varied stages - some encourage you to explore to find hidden areas, others are simple shooting stages. The graphics are a mixed bunch, but generally nice, with a very appealing style to them. Once you get used to the gameplay and begin to learn the levels, the game really begins to shine and it will really grow on you.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Atomic_Robo-Kid_Special.htm

Doraemon
Not the platforming sequel, but the original Doraemon game. A curious maze game in which you collect items while digging holes to destroy your enemies. Repetition can set in with lengthy gaming sessions, but a password feature/backup save is there to break it up. It's really a great little game once you get into it and can't help but make you smile.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Doraemon.htm

Dungeon Explorer
I don't consider this an RPG - it's basically a Gauntlet clone with a bit of a plot. Easy enough to navigate even if you don't read Japanese, the game has a nice dark atmosphere and some of the best music on HuCard. Much fun.
Link: http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Dungeon_Explorer.htm

Gomola Speed
A truly original title - you are a robotic caterpillar who must collect his body parts and then encircle his foes to destroy them. It looks simple, but effective, and can really bring on the thumb cramps. But it's something completely different to the other titles out there and deserves more attention.

For puzzlers, you need Columns, Spin Pair, Skweek, and Hatris (fuck teh haters!).  You could also pick up Blodia (Timeball in the US); I hate it, but a lot of peeps dig it.

For platformers, you need the three Bonk titles, Aoi Blink, and Son Son II.

Pretty much all the great shmups have already been recommended, but I'd add in Deep Blue.  It catches a lot of flak, but it's not that bad; plus it's cheap, so you're not out much if you end up hating it.
