General Gaming / Re: The C64 Mini
03/10/2018, 02:30 PM
Quote from: ParanoiaDragon on 03/10/2018, 02:03 AMJust wondering if anybody else around here is interested in the C64 Mini?  I'm looking forward to it, just waiting for info on the Western release.  I'm also looking forward to the ZX Spectrum Vega Plus.....if it indeed is actually coming out.  I like the look of the system & it's games.....none of which I really grew up with.  The only Euro stuff I grew up with is the Amiga, with Shadow of the Beast & such.    A friend of mine has an Amiga with tons of games from BITD, though I recall the games taking forever to load.  I have fiddled around with Amiga emu's, but I'd love to see an Amiga Mini!
I'm keeping an eye on the C64 mini. I guess the closest you have to an Amiga Mini is the various  Minimigs. Not that they are official or come with software...

No set rules.  If using the main TV, only able to use it when it was free (which was often enough).  Alternative TVs were available around the house and eventually became primary gaming TV.

Granted, I had good grades, would typically have homework done and whatever chores was asked, so rules wasn't really imposed.  During Atari days (and early 8 bit computer days), most games could be played for short burst so interrupting play to go do something else like chores or give up the tv was easier.

The closest to playing a long-form game at the time would be when trying to program my own games on the computer which was more or less encouraged.  But at that point the computer had a small B&W TV.

Woohoo. I'm one of those four!

XP works well.

Would "Total" instead of "Current" (ie Total XP)  sound better? (Assuming that it the total overall and not the XPs generated on that level and that counter will reset later in the game session.)

Ooo.. Put in another preorder. :P  Hopefully the black hole that sucked up all of the copies (3?) of the first run that were sent to me has dissipated and I'll finally get to play it. ;)
#10
I'd like an entry. (Maybe this time I'll actually get a copy.  My actual order kept getting lost to the postal void after multiple sents.)
#11
It took me a while to finally purchase one.

When the duo came out, I had a tax return burning a when in my pocket. I  demoed Wings of Thunder at the store and I purchased it there.

I think that the turbo is the only 16 bit era console that used the CD format right... as in it compensated for the system's weaker points and allowed it's strengths to shine.
#12
I was first aware of the TG16 in video game magazines, catalogues and store demos. I wasn't a fan of the system at first. Mostly due to the soundtrack to many of the early titles. (Okay. Blazing Lazers did have an awesome soundtrack.)

The first Turbo system I bought was purchased using an employee discount at the store I worked at the time. I purchased it to trade for an Amiga 1000.

Eventually, what got me to look at the system again was the release of the TurboDuo. I got a demo at a nearby store and used my tax refund to buy it. I initially stuck to only CD games until I warmed up to system's sound chip. ;)

My first import title was Salamander found in a local store. I think my first mail order import title was... Flash Hiders or Martial Champions. I think it was to tide me over for DraculaX? I also remember preordering Street Fighter 2, an Arcade Card with Fatal Fury 2 and Art of Fighting.

I burned through 3 duos and now I'm using a SuperGrafx with a SuperCD drive.

I think my Turbo/PCEngine gaming collection is the largest of my various systems. I would guess that my Dreamcast would fall in second place.

Can I request the possibility of paying for an alternate shipping method if the reprint occurs...

(Never did get my order for the first print even after 3 attempts... Don't know if people at the post office really wanted to play them...)
#14
Back in the day was as close to release date as I could have gotten it. I was calling up the import store long distance every week to see if they got it yet.

I had to contend with an awful exchange rate, import fees, long wait for delivery while reading the few articles in magazines I could find.

When I finally got it, I was so hyped that I was let down by those first few moments of the game. It wasn't that I thought it that small chunk of the game sucked. It just wasn't as spectacular as I was expecting.
#15
I will admit then when I first got Rondo back in the day I was initially disappointed.

The slideshow intro, the encounter with death, and initial stage before entering the castle seemed a little lackluster for all the hype the game was getting...

Of course, the changed as soon as I entered the castle...

So does Shockman/Shubinbinman... I'm trying to remember if Shubinbinman 1 and 3 has it but in Shockman both players setup a charge shot, one player shoots the other with their charge shot. That player absorbs the charget shot and lets go of their own charge shot to get a spread charge shot.

General Gaming / Re: PS4: Who's Got It?

Got my PS4 last night and grabbed some footage. :P

I think the OS (even with the 1.5 update) is a bit buggy.  Don't try to download/update and install anything from the "Notification" window.  It stays stuck in the "Preparing to install".  Best bet is to let it download/install in background.

Well... Except of the initial firmware update.  Downloading from Notifications didn't install, had to go through one of the numerous warning messages that requested updates (like PSN login) for the firmware update to start and compelte.

Anyway, I played Knack with my wife and that wasn't too bad...  Except for the angle changes that could give some people whiplash. :P)  Resogun is fun...  Waiting on all of the other downloads.

Now I've got 20$ in credit (10$ from a previous promotion, 10$ from the PS4 promition), I'm wondering if there is anything for purchase in the PSN store that's worthwhile. :P

My pre-order should arrive tomorrow...

The online retailer I used tried to not break street date by shipping the consoles in order of how long the console will take to travel...  Which meant that the people furthest away got their consoles early/on-time, the people closest (somehow I'm in that window) got theirs shipped the day of and therefore haven't received theirs' yet...

Luckily I didn't pay for express shipping since they shipped them later in the day of...  Yeah, complaint threads on their forums, website crashes, etc. ;)

The problem with Tapatalk is that it always loves to post useless stuff like this every single time. I have no idea if it can be turned off or not because I've never had the need or desire to participate in a web forum from a mobile device. Hell I rarely even take my cell phone with me when I leave the house.

Also I don't think Tapatalk is free to download and use.
The signature should be off now... Sorry, forgot to turn it off. Was trying to edit it from the original post but it was insisting to stick around.

I rarely use it to post, it's a nice way to scan the forums. There is a free version but I don't remember its limitations.

It's nicely optimized for mobile and tablets.  4

Apart from early arcade games and pinballs...

My first gaming devices were:
1) Radio Shack TV Scoreboard (Pong game w/Light Gun)
2) An LED Football portable game (didn't like football but it's a game!)
3) Merlin

Followed by 2600, Pac-Man watch, various Radio Shack LCD games, VIC-20, Chase'N'Counter, Dad's IBM Turbo AT (he did CAD work so EGA instead of CGA), TRS-80 CoCo3, C-64, Amiga, SMS, SNES, etc...

Hmm... If it's cheaper then the vita itself it could be interesting, since I tend to play on TV and remote playing elsewhere in the house might be interseting...  I don't really play many portables on the go, my 3DS is mostly used for Street Pass at this point. :P

Depends on the game and system.  The more "complete" and involved a game, the more I would pay.

So far the city's new "Smart Card" public transit system... "Presto".

Where to start...
1) You can put money/monthly pass on the card online!  It might take 24 to 48 hours for the funds to become available...  Oh, but that's not all, you need to zap the card on the bus within 30 days after those 24-48 hours in order to actually transfer that cash on the card.  In the mean time, there is NO record of that purchase aside from some e-mails.

2) If you're not using a monthly pass, you need to squint to see the tiny text that says how much is left on the card or how much time you have left on your "transfer".

3) If there is ever a problem and you need a refund, it can take months before you actually get anywhere.  Not to mention they have one of the worst automated phone systems I ever had to navigate.  You can't skip long messages and are forced to listen to these innane long announcements saying to go to the website, set up automatic payments (fat chance!), it can take 24 to 48 hours for payments to go through, etc.  After spending a good 15 minutes navigating somewhere, you can't go back to the previous menu if you make a wrong selection (or heaven forbid want to do something totally INSANE like check your balance *AND* report an issue with said balance)... but you can check your balance twice, I think.  You need to hang up, and spend another 15 minutes.

I may be totally misremembering, but I think there's a location where you can mix some "ingredients" for a potion.  The problem is figuring out which ingredients to use (possibly in a specific order).

Had the PS4 conference playing in the background.  My ears perked up on the new Beast game. It looks like a 2.5D sidescroller, but looks iffy at the moment...

Quote from: guest on 06/12/2013, 12:14 PMApparently the PS4 is setup to lock out used games the same as the Xbox One. Sony is only saying that for now, they are opting not to lock out their own first party games. If a third party chooses, they might lock out used games but not sell/transfer user licenses, which would make it even worse than Xbox One for used gsmes.
I guess we'll see... http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/11/playstation-4-drm-policies-third-party/  ithe update portion says:
"Update: Sony itself has responded with the following: "Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever.""

He seems categorically saying that the offline play on *DISC*-based games won't have restrictions.  Developers can have an online-pass system for PS4 like they had for some PS3/360 games or adopt another system.

I guess we'll see.

I'm just glad that there is no line-up for the Wii U games at my Library. (Yes, my public library loans out video games...)  So I played through Orochi 3 (with my wife), Super Scribblenauts and Lego City Undercover. :P  Out of the three, I would have probably bought Lego City Undercover if I wasn't able to constantly renew it. :P

Quote from: guest on 06/04/2013, 03:11 PMthe Lego games.  They're not at all difficult, yet still fun and quite humorous at times.
My wife and I went through the bulk of them, but I think that Lego Star Wars (1 &2) are the best of the bunch followed from Lego Batman.  I like how the later ones do a dynamic split screen when both players move away from each other but it also makes the game a little too open and sometimes makes it difficult to know what you're supposed to do in the later games.  We'd get annoyed and revert to single player.

We tried Lego Lord of the Rings and they've just pulled audio from the movies, there is some humor but I think the humor worked best when they were forced to mime a known story instead of just pulling the audio from the film itself.

That said, Lego City Undercover is pretty good.  There is speach throughout but it is an original story while making nodes to various police, spy, firefighter films and TV series.  It is single player and I think most of the newer Lego Games seem to be better geared to single player experiences, which is odd considering they have technology that handles split screen.)

Quote from: reno5 on 05/03/2013, 02:38 PMCanada has 2 officials languages. So normally the french is supposed to be present in the entire country. But as no one else speak french they only make sure french is on in Quebec.
There are francophone groups everywhere in Canada but we're mostly a minority.  Quebec being the only province with a francophone majority has a set of laws that more or less require for software to include french instructions, etc.  It does get enforced sporadically and occasionally you hear saber rattling from their provincial government about pulling software off the shelves if they don't meet their requirements..

It's usually easier for companies to distribute the same version across the whole country. (Which is fine by me, being franco-ontarian, I get a spare set of instructions... :P)

Most packaging I've seen now a days seem to include English, Spanish and French for distribution across North America.  You do occasionally get French-only version of software (i.e. versions packaged for France but with the region locking to North America).  I occasionally buy those on clearance if they're cheaper.  Other times you'll see a bilingual dust jacket with the french instructions outside of the case just shrink wrapped together with the game.  Or dust jackets that are flippable to the alternative language...

Arcade Card Pro works with a Duo system, instead of using the Duo's built-in SuperCD card/system it will use the card's.

i.e. If you use a US Duo with an Arcade Card Pro (on modded system, or using a HuCard Converter) you'll see the Japanese SCD menu (found on the AC Pro card) instead of the Duo's US one.

Vasteel 2 also has this capability.  (Doesn't any of the MB128 supported games all work the same essentially.)

I visit my in-laws in Malaysia every so often. :P  My father-in-law recently moved from KL (well, PJ) to JB.  (More family in Penang and Ipoh).  I miss KL when I visit now, especially the food. ;)

Yeah, I never found much PCE stuff when I go there.  There are some pirated GBA (and DS multi carts) in one of the game shops in 1Utama when I dropped by a while back. :P  I did go to the central KL market in KL 10 years or so ago and spotted some of those pirated NES system in various cases.

Quote from: JKM on 02/12/2013, 10:10 AMI hate piracy in general, but I'm getting to the point where having dozens of game systems with dozens of games on each is just way too much clutter.
I've gotten to the point where I put all of the cases in storage and just leave the bare carts + instructions around.  I'm debating storing all of my CD and DVD games into cd/dvd travel pouches and just catalogue the games on the spines.  But I have been looking at flashcarts and disk images as a way to reduce clutter as well.

I've moved some of my smaller collection of CD games (i.e. 3D0, Sega CD and Saturn) into thin CD jewel cases (putting the original gargantuan cases in storage) and it saved lots of room.  I'm debating doing that for all of my disk media.

Off-Topic / Re: working out
01/25/2013, 11:55 PM
I do a sort of an augmented WiiFit routine on weekdays (about a little over an hour 5 times a week in the morning).
- 20+ minutes of strength stuff (do the harder exercises and use dumbbells instead of wiimote, 2 minute plank, push up and side planks, etc)
- 20 minute free run (use an elliptical machine on highest setting instead of running in place).
- 20 minute of yoga and cool down.

Been doing it pretty consistently for a couple of years.  I've always been skinny, but I was looking at some vacation pictures a couple of years ago and I noticed that I was developing a gut.  I've managed to get quite toned and slowly lost around 20 kilos in two years (I also made slight adjustments to my eating habits.)  I didn't bulk up, wasn't looking to, I still look skinny but the flabbiness is gone.*

*Well, I still have a tiny bit of a spare tire...  It's sort of like a semi-5-pack thing going on. :P

Quote from: ddd1234 on 12/07/2012, 11:17 PMWhat does the arcade card do for this game?
If I remember correctly (haven't booted it up in a long time) it pretty much preloads the whole game at the start neo-geo CD like.  Hmm... Actually, it might also improve the cinemas as well like 3x3 Eyes...  (So there might be some loading after the cinemas.)
#43
Yeah, I was disappointed that it reverted to a plain strategy game and removes the action elements.

That said, it does a neat routine at the beginning to scan your peripherals and finds out if you're using an AC card, Memory Base 128 (or save kun) and mouse. ;)

But you do have the option to order one magazine and 2 copies of the game. ;)
