10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Off-Topic / 3,758th Post Thread
08/01/2011, 12:30 PM
This thread is only for people to post their 3758th post. If you try to post anything else but your 3758th post here, you are an asshole... because this is the 3758th post thread.

Just wanted to say this site has been pretty solid for the first 3758 posts, hopefully it keeps getting better!

I wonder if anyone else will ever post here?

Bonknuts just posted a playthrough of his three year old GoT hack. It's pretty neat. I don't remember seeing it before, but I really like some of the graphical changes. The music is probably the most drastic change, but I quite like it.

Anyway, here is Bonknuts playing his GoT hack on devil mode:

The Genesis has 16Bit emblazoned on the top of console. That could easily be the end of discussion right there, but the Genesis also pwns the PCE with its "High Definition Graphics". Even the PS3 and 360 can't compete with that. All this time I've been deluding myself that PCE games look as good as the Genesis, or the SNES, for that matter. The PCE has an 8Bit CPU and there's nothing left to discuss; it's simple math: 8 < 16. I don't mean to troll on a dedicated NEC forum, but the truth is the truth. It has taken many years of listening repeatedly to what I thought was misinformation to finally come to realize that it was I who was wrong.

As OBEYers, we all love the reset feature present on the Turbo and PCE. It was so nice not having to get up to reach for the reset switch like on the NES. However, I think we all have bad experiences with the run + select feature. You've been playing a game for hours -hours full of tears, sweat, and foul language - and you're finally making some headway when something happens, something terrible: you press run + select and reset the game. You quickly comb your brain for ways out of this predicament, but there's nothing you can do except stare blankly at the screen in disbelief.

Though this has happened to me a few times, one time in particular stands out. It was during a long session of Valis III in an attempt to beat that infamous water stage. The Valis games require you to heed a little more caution to the 'run + select' reset feature because the games utilize the run and/or select buttons for either magic or the slide. Well, I was doing really well on the water stage and was set to actually make it to the boss when I tried to use my magic and accidentally reset the game. FAIL. Thankfully Valis has save features, so it's not like I had to play the entire game over again, but it took me a relatively long time to get as far on that stage as I was.

General Gaming / Cool Console Mods!

Just thought it would be cool to see what crazy modifications people have made to their gaming consoles:

Here's a crazy Dreamcast mod of a certain Star Wars ship:

I was talking with a friend of mine a couple days ago and the Jaguar was brought up. He was mentioning these war simulators that we used to play back in the late 90s. I remember them being quite good and being blown away by the animated battle sequences. I did a 30 second Google search for them, but came up with nothing. heh Just wondering if anybody here knows what games these could be. :-k

EDIT: I changed the title of the thread because it might have been the 3DO that he was thinking and is just remembering wrong.

Fighting Street / Draw Muhammad Day
05/20/2010, 09:48 AM
Today is apparently "Draw Muhammad Day". It stems from the Danish cartoonist who got murdered for depicting Muhammad with a bomb as a his turban, though it is more of a direct response to the censorship by Comedy Central of a South Park episode that makes fun of Muhammad. The "movement" claims that it is doing this to protect free speech, but I don't buy it. I personally couldn't give a rat's ass about whether or not people draw him, but this DMD just smacks of an excuse to be a dick. I mean, where were all these so-called defenders of free speech when "To Kill a Mockingbird" was banned? Hell, maybe Europe should have a "Read Mein Kampf Day", or a "Watch 'When You Wish Upon a Weinstein... Day (Family Guy episode about Jewish stereotypes)". Maybe we should organize a "Have an Abortion Day" to protect the rights of women and defend the honour of the doctors who were shot and killed by radical Christians for performing the abortions.

Anyway, here's my artistic depiction of the prophet:

OK, seems like this poll would have been created here at some point, but in my extensive three minute search I couldn't find one. So, let the ultimate battle between teh shooties styles begin!! 8)

There are so many great shooties of any type, so it's tough, but I think I'm finally starting to prefer the verts.

Off-Topic / OBEY TEH MUZIK!!

This forum desperately n33dz a music thread.

What muzik are you obeying today?

I, of course, will start it off with a Canuck bias, add to the fact that the cold Atlantic air is suddendly making its presence. I'm in the midst of a "Weeds" marathon, wishing I was in California, so here are my 'Odez to California':

I have an extra loosey goosey Galaga '90 with the plastic sleeve. I'm interested in a trade and was thinking Pac Land, though I could be persuaded into another game. :)

I bought two games off this guy almost three months ago and have yet to get anything from him except empty promises that he's taking care of the situation. I lost track of time on this sale and, unfortunately, the 45 day limit on paypal for complaints passed me by. Just want people to be very aware of this seller, especially since his rating on eBay is 100%. Nectarsis also apparently had a run-in with this guy as well. I'm still communicating back and forth with this guy, so we'll see what happens, but I'm not hopeful.

BTW, the games were Bloody Wolf and Neutopia.

Christian Bale loses his mind on some DP on the set of Terminator Salvation. The DP fucked up, but Bale acts like a shithead and doesn't know when to shut up. Just imagine if Bale messed up his lines and the director had a temper tantrum like this on Bale. In any other job you would be fired for behaving in such a manner. It's entertaining nonetheless. lol I feel bad for that DP. Bale or one of the producers should have pulled that guy aside and just talked to him.

Well, I just got a e-newsletter from www.lifehacker.com that focused on the various upgrades/mods you can make to various media and consoles. It seems Wii owners will now be able to unlock the DVD playback capabilities of the Wii. And the best part is that it's a softmod. =D>

General Gaming / Xbox 360 and XBMC lowdown
08/26/2008, 02:39 PM
OK, now that I have an HD LCD 720p TV, I'm considering upgrading my original Xbox to a 360. The original Xbox does stream up to 720p or 1080i, but drops frame rates on larger files. My obvious concern are the RROD that plague so many 360s, and was wondering if Microsoft has solved the issue with later models, specifically the elite edition. I was also told by the IT guy at work that Microsoft is making it virtually impossible to hack the newer 360 models coming out.

Anyway, if people have any experience using the 360 as a media centre I would love to hear about it. My other option is to get a Popcorn hour, which I've seen in action and is pretty cool. I don't like the menu interface as much though - it's a lot like the PS3 interface. [-X Also, Popcorn Hour isn't as versatile as the Xbox, but there's no reason I can't have both. heh

Mike Helgeson came on shoutbox and said, "Fuckers, horses, and fishnet. You have 10 minutes to write a story that incorporates these three things." So, I tried. I'll be honest, I took longer than 10 minutes (more like 20) hehe, but I did get something down. It wasn't until the end that I realized that I forgot to include "fishnet" into the story. I went back and stuck it in there. Read carefully or you will miss the fishnet reference. lol

Anyway, here's my lame story. lol

QuoteThere once were 3 fuckers that loved the Genesis and would play all day on their horse ranch. They each only had one game for the console, but would share the games amongst themselves. So, together they had the three good games for the Genesis: Streets of Rage, Sonic, Ghosts and Goblins. One day Fucker #1 remember that
he was a fucker and that all this sharing went against their nature, so he took all three games and went on a quest on one of the horses to hide the Genesis games from the rest of the fuckers.

After four weeks of searching Fucker # 1 found the perfect hiding spot and started to make his way back to the ranch. However, on the way back he had an accident, fell off the horse and hit his head. He not only forgot where he hit his head, but also forgot who he was. All he remembered was that he liked games.
Not knowing where to go, he made his way to the local town and picked himself up a Turbografx. In town he ran into the other two fuckers who were pissed off at him for taking off with the games. He told them that he doesn't remember anything, but said he has a Turbografx to play games on. The other fuckers said OK, and they all went back to the ranch to try out this abomination of a game system.

When they got home and plugged in the Turbografx and Fucker # 1 put in Space Harrier. As the Sega logo appeared Fucker #1 started to remember who he was. Because there was only one controller port and no Turbotap, the other two Fuckers were constantly nagging Fucker # 1 to share the game. They were also dissing the graphics and kept yelling out, "This is only 8-bit!!!" It was then, like a flash of Blast Processing, that all of Fucker #1's memories came rushing back to him and decided that these two other Fuckers were just getting in his way of a good gaming experience. So he tied them up in the fishnet that just happens to be lying around, put them on one of the horses and sent them away.

Fucker #1 then went back up to the ranch house to play Space Harrier the way it was meant to be played.
Ok, your turn.

Write a short story that incorporates "ringtones", "van", and "Dracula X Special Version". :P

This is a price guide for a whole slew of consoles that have graced the living rooms of excited gamers over the last few decades.

The prices can be quite exaggerated. Seems like they did their pricing research at RedFrog for some of these systems, but it's actually not too far off with the NEC consoles.

As the subject heading suggests, I have a Ys Book I and II CD without manual or case. I have both the TG-CD version and the Turbo Duo version of the game. I would prefer to part with the Duo version, but that's not set in stone.

If anyone's interested in making a trade don't be shy. :)

I'm just curious about what games allow you to play with a higher screen resolution. This option can either be in the menu or can be a cheat/code.

I know this is in the TG forum, but I'm curious about either the PCE or TG. I just flipped a coin and picked the TG forum.

As per nat's request, I'm going to maintain a list here. I'll also list the codes next to the games as they are provided.

1943 KAI - Option available in "Options" menu

Burning Angels - Option in menu

Cyber Core - Enter the password "MAKIRIN"

Daisenpu - Hold I and power on the TurboGrafx.

Dragon Saber - Reset the game 30 times for hi-res arcade mode.

Dragon Spirit - Reset the game 57 times for hi-res arcade mode.

Final Soldier - At the title screen, while it says "Normal Mode", press:
Left, Left, I, Right, Right, II, Up, Down, Up, Down
A sound effect will ring as it enables the Stage Select trick, -there will be a purple number near the bottom of the screen.
Repeat the previous code - Left, Left, I, Right, Right, II, Up, Down, Up, Down
If input correctly, you'll hear that sound effect again.
Reset using Run + Select and the game will be running in the higher/"vertical" resolution.

Image Fight - Hold I when the "Irem" logo gets displayed.

Nexzr - Option available in "Options" menu

Soldier Blade - Option available in "Options" menu

Steam Hearts - in arcade res by default, the margin is used for status & score display... (I guess the next question would be, is there a code to make the screen stretch?)

Super Star Soldier - Hold down RUN+SELECT then power on the system. Release RUN+SELECT. In sequence enter L, II, U, II, R, II, D, II, L, I, U, I, R, I, D, I, (I+II)x8, (I+SELECT)x8.

Tatsujin - Option available in "Options" menu: the option screen is available by holding select and by pressing run on the title screen.

Toilet Kids - Press and Hold Select while you turn the machine on, at the title screen.

Twinbee - you need a multitap with 3 connections or more:
Press I, II, Right, Left, Right, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up on controller three at the title screen. Select Vmode in options.

Re: PunkCryborg's post - Here is another link to a compiled list of games with Arcade Mode and their respective codes:

General Gaming / PSP vs. DS
01/25/2008, 12:50 PM
We all know that the Turbo Express is the best portable system hands down. 8) But a friend of mine is trying to decide which is best to buy. She's a Nintendo fan, but she just found out that she can play the DS on the PSP - not really sure on the details on how that works.

I have a GBA so I would be more tempted to get the DS as it's backwards compatible, and from what I've gathered the DS also has a better online/multiplayer gaming.

Anywoo, lets get ready to rumble!

I was just wondering what the difference is between the cut scenes on 3X3 Eyes with the Arcade Card. I've checked out the Youtube video, but that's without the Arcade Card. Anyway, the intro to that game is awesome. The music is so surreal.

OK. So about a week after getting my side mirror fixed, I just noticed my other mirror is busted - though not as bad. Just a crack in the plastic, but still. I'm pissed.

I love the shout box, but it can't take away from the forums. The beauty of this site is the fact that lame conversations about SGX ports vs. GEN ports can turn into even lamer conversations about Toungeman's latest "impossible for even Columbo" riddles. 8)
#28
OK, I know people have some opinions on this so I'd just like to hear them all. :) I have a NA Turbo Duo and, of course, it has the lovely sound issue. I bought the Turbo Duo because it was THE system I always wanted; however, some people have said here that it's just better to buy the Duo RX because it doesn't seem to have the same issues as the TD.

Anyway, I was just wondering what people advise here. Should I fix my TD audio issue and soup it up with S-Video and a region mod or just invest in a Duo RX? I guess I could just own both in the end. heh. I'll be honest and just say now that I love the North American Duo, crappy game artwork and all.

Off-Topic / Side mirror got clipped. :|
01/05/2008, 11:08 PM
I was parked on the side of the road at a friend's place and when we came out to get into my car I noticed the driver's side mirror all busted up right good like. yaaaayyy  100% lamitude. Could have been way worse; all I have to do is replace the mirror and frame and get it painted. Fortunately the mirror swivels for just that purpose.

Anyway, I just needed to vent. lol

Note to self: never park on that street again.

I was just thinking that it would be cool as hell if we could all play Bomberman '93, or any version for that matter, online against each other. It would just be neat to be able to share the NEC experience. :) And that goes for any multiplayer game, i.e. DE.

I mention this more out of curiosity than anything because I certainly do not have to ability to develop an online version of any game, let alone an old PCE game. :-k

I was doing some cleaning yesterday and had moved my Turbo Duo to get it out of the way. I keep my Duo on the floor right now as I don't have a proper set up in my place. :( Well this morning I had my coffee sitting on my window sill directly above where I usually keep the Duo and I managed, in all my clumsiness, to knock it over. The coffee spilled everywhere and my Duo, had it been where it normally is, would have been soaked.

Thanks the gods. [-o<

This just proved to me that I have to get my baby up from off the floor. It's no way to raise my child. It needs a crib. :)

I just got back from the mall and there's a belt buckle stand on the 1st floor that sells all kinds of various belt buckles. They had a NES controller belt buckle, which was pretty awesome. I just might have to get it. But, of course, a PC Engine/TurboDuo/TurboGrafx belt buckle would just simply rock. 8) Just wondering if anyone has seen this around anywhere. I could see maybe in Japan.

Aside from that, any other novelty NEC/Hudson collectibles would be neat to hear about.

I might just have to go to the fine art college here in town and talk to one of the students in metal works and see if they could do something for me. lol I want one bad. A controller buckle would be cool, but so would a buckle of one of the systems. Oh man, a HuCard belt buckle would rock too. What game though? :-k

Just wondering if anyone is going to check this out. I, of course, already have my ticket. 8) The original series on the big screen in remastered glory. 2 hours of bliss.

I find the AVGN hilarious, but I just wish he'd review some TurboGrafx games as he is no longer just the Angry Nintendo Nerd. I was just wondering if that was to happen which games do people think he would end up reviewing? :-k

I could totally see him review some of the early CD games like Sherlock Holmes (I just watched an old GamePro TV show that gave that game best graphics of the year or something like that), It Came from the Desert, etc... He hates the Sega CD so I could totally see him hating those games. hehe

I'm somewhat familiar with web design - by somewhat I mean I'm basically a noob. I'm pretty good with Photoshop, but Imageready is driving me nuts. A friend of mine told me that Imageready and all those programs are shit and with CSS you can do what takes days on Imageready in mere hours. So I've decided to learn CSS instead of banging my head against the wall with Imageready.

I've found a couple of nice tutorials: www.w3schools.com and www.projectseven.com.

Just wondering if anyone here has any suggestions or tutorials they'd wish to share. [-o<

Off-Topic / Where are you?
10/02/2007, 02:32 PM
I was just wondering where everyone is from in this here pcenginefx community. :)

I'm a Canuck from Halifax (Dartmouth to be more exact), Nova Scotia. I'm originally from Ottawa, Ontario and also lived out in Whistler, British Columbia for a while. I just finished school...again...and I'm currently looking for professional work, which can be difficult here in Halifax as it's a smaller city of around 350 000 people give or take. If I can't find anything substantial here I'll be making another move, probably within Canada but you never know.
#41
I just thought I'd post this up here. The person selling it bought it years ago from TZD and never opened it. The starting bid is $499.00, but the BIN price is $699.00. (I never thought I'd see the day when the Canadian price listing would be cheaper than the American. I'm so used to adding 15 or 20 bucks to the American price. I should really be buying shit up right now. lol).

The Duo I bought actually came with the box and foam/wrapping, but it didn't have the advertising band around the box. It's amazing seeing the pictures. Brings back fond memories of excitement and yet, at the same time, disappointment knowing that I wouldn't be owning one anytime soon. heh.

Well, if someone here has $700.00 burning a hole in their pocket I'd pick this puppy up. 8)

I'm not exactly sure if this thread belongs in this forum as I'm not specifically selling or looking at this item, but I thought since it is about pricing.... So, let me apologize Keranu in advanced. :)

I was just wondering if this is a good deal, or overpriced. It's well over $200 for what I paid for mine. I paid less than this even after buying a bunch of games. So I was just wondering if I just happened to get a good deal or this is way over priced or both. hehe. My Duo is in pretty much the same shape, except for my TurboPad has a broken turbo switch. I have to use a pencil end to move it up or down because the little knob is broken off. No biggie, but I will have to get some more controllers. Gotta get some multiplayer Dungeon Explorer and Bomberman action going.

So yeah, I was just curious.
#45
My brother called me the other day and said that he found 2 TG 16 controllers and a TurboTap in a box. Man, I would love for him to find my Turbografx, but I think I stupidly sold it way back when. #-o Anyway, I was just wondering if there are adapters for the controllers so I can use them with my Duo. I'm pretty sure there are, but just wanted to make sure. And if they aren't just figments of my imagination how much do they usually go for?

It would be sweet to have some multiplayer action with Bomberman and Dungeon Explorer. :D

*sorry if there is already a thread on this topic. i couldn't find it if it's there*

I was just wondering if there is any news or rumours floating around in regards to CD or Super CD games coming out for the Virtual Console. Are there any technical limitations with the Wii that would prevent this from happening?
