2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 08/20/2015, 02:13 PMI do have a lot of prog rock vinyl. Complexity or popularity aren't why Van Halen sucks. They suck because they suck. They suck because the egomaniacal lead wanker/guitarist instructs his for-hire  bassist to only play root notes in case his dumb solos happen to wander into different chords. This way you don't notice the "star" fucking up. Also, their most popular lead singer sounds like a 14 year old girl on a Sybian. The other guy is OK but so is Huey Lewis.
Word! Hagar and Anthony are better off without those toolbags!

someone should rename this thread ClodBusted Rage Wars

I have to say I really enjoyed Rage Wars as a kid. It was actually playable, which cannot be said of Perfect Dark's arena section. That shit got too ridiculously hard. I always wanted a grey Rage Wars cart cause I could actually get all the trophies in it, of course except the 4 or 6 that weren't possible to get in the black version. It was a strangely addictive game. I played it for hours trying to get trophies and unknowingly the ones I couldn't get. I had tons of fun with it though I would say Turok 2 was my famorite with the cerebral bore. That made my day!

I've not played them since but had real love for them back in the day whether it be at 3am and falling into a spider pit and scaring the shit out of myself or grinding Rage Wars.

As for the debate of the N64's greatness. It was such a better product than its contemporaries. I didn't know a single person who bought into sega consoles at that point. The Jaguar is a pile of shit, and who honestly had the time or patiance to buy their way through the seemingly millions of the shittiest pieces of shovelware on any system to find the 50 or so good ones on PS1. That whole generation is dated btw. I can't even play a Resident Evil game from before 4 anymore. Tank controls are game ruining at this point for me. I still do get some mindless fun out of Twisted Metal 2 and maybe 2 or 3 others that take a light gun from PS1. I never had the Castlevanias on PS1 but wanted them. Honestly though, they are 2D hold overs and should reflect how good they were in previous generations rather than a monument to the success of the PS1. N64 has not aged well, but they do have some serious classics that are still worth the time to play them. The Banjo games, anything with Mario, the 2 Zeldas, MK4 was never given the credit it was due, I'll take NFL Blitz over any Madden -ever, Star Fox, and WCW World Tour/Revenge. That's enough to buy a system for even over a decade later. I've not pulled out my system in a long time to try more but I had 50 games from back in the day that I loved on that system out of a what, a 400 game library? If I didn't have a PS2, I'd never take a second look at the PS1 library. 95% of it was the worst garbage in gaming at the time of it's release. I'd hate to see an in depth look at how garbage ages in the gaming world. It's not fine wine.

One thing I remember was the whole Expansion Pak thing.  I remember getting it for Rogue Squadron (maybe it came with it?)   But I distinctly remember Turok 2 looking WAY better with it than without.  I guess it was a resolution increase and it actually looked quite nice.

That's really interesting.  I didn't know turok 2 could take advantage of the expansion pack ram.

BlueBMW

Yeah it had the whole HI-REZ mode which I think was infact a higher resolution.  Looked a lot sharper.

Turok 2 and Rogue Squadron might have been the reason the expansion pak was eventually released separately from the 64 disk drive at all.

Perfect Dark required it, otherwise you played just the arena challenges. Found that out the hard way. Brought the game home and was so pissed I couldn't play the story mode.

"You're an idiot." Is the response I'd expect from a 12 year old playing Halo online. I say "Good job! You have some personal growing to do before adulthood."

I always figured the main push behind it was DK64 and Majora's Mask.  I can't imagine Majora's mask getting canceled sitting well with nintendo's fan base at the time.

Well, if I remember right, Acclaim and LucasArts, or their respective developers studios Iguana and Factor 5, came up with high resolution pre-release footage of Turok 2 and Rogue Squadron, and used them to put some pressure on Nintendo, who was still stubbornly waiting for the 64 DD to be released along with the memory expansion.

DK64, MM and PD came months or even years later to the party and to me it looks like they benefitted from the initial breakthrough of the expansion pak in early '99.

Back in the day, most people I personally know couldn't get into Majora's Mask. The same people started glorifying it almost a decade later with the virtual console, GameCube and 3DS re-releases/remakes.
