@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

A couple of months ago, someone here argued with me that HD-DVD was going to be the winning format... whoever that was, they were wrong.

Now it has finally happened! HD-DVD is now officially dead and buried.

Toshiba just bailed. It's over.

http://www.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/dailynews7.html

QuoteJapan's electronics giant Toshiba Corporation will withdraw from high-definition DVD production.

Sources say Toshiba plans to stop producing HD-DVD players and recorders at its plant in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, and further development of the products.

The plan will probably be officially decided at the company's board of directors extraordinary meeting early this week.

Toshiba is expected to continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while, and announce support measures for users as soon as the decision is officially made.

Toshiba has been struggling with its version of DVD format, called HD-DVD, in a fierce battle with the Blu-ray format backed by Sony, Panasonic, and Hitachi.

The wide adoption of the Blu-ray format by US movie studios and retailers apparently prompted Toshiba to decide to withdraw from the HD-DVD business.

Electronics firms expect the end of the high-definition DVD race to boost sales of the products.

Yo doods, post your best (shortest) playtimes in Ys IV The Dawn of Ys.

I E the game time you had when you reached the final boss.

If you "win" this almighty contest with the lowest playtime, nothing happens.

If you go through the trouble of playing through the game as fast as you can because you saw this thread, you get no rewards. No praise. Nothing.

Mine is 10:19. Nothing special, but I wasn't aiming for anything either.

Go!

QuoteYs: Book I & II bound for the virtual console in North America

IMGLast month, Hudson released Ys: Book I & II on the Japanese Virtual Console. For 800 Wii Points ($8) you get two Ys games, which is a bargain. Hudson has not confirmed the Turbo Grafx-16 CD game for North America, but the ESRB gave it an "E" rating. I would say chances are good we're getting it in the future.

I spent some with the re-release and the games feel antiquated. But seeing Adol body slam enemies instead of using his sword brings back good memories. If you have the patience for old school action RPGs this package is for you and it's a good deal considering $8 is substantially cheaper than the price of the individually sold DS remakes.

General Gaming / Capcom rambling
07/07/2007, 09:04 PM
Looking at the Gamefaqs website, I noticed today's poll... What's your all-time favorite Capcom series?

Breath of Fire
Darkstalkers
Devil May Cry
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Mega Man
Monster Hunter
Resident Evil
Street Fighter

I realized that I couldn't vote today, because I would never play anything in either of these series even if I would get paid for it. I guess nobody except Keranu will understand me on this. How could Capcom get so popular with all these non-solid series? Are they really worth the massive popularity they've gained? Everybody knows about most of these series and they are considered great, but at the same time they have ALL been accused of being too repetitive, i e all the games in the respective series games are practically identical, etc. Basically, Capcom likes milking. A lot. Moreso than ANY other company, I dare say. Why are these games so successful? Do you like them?

Flame away, please.

I need Neutopia 1-2 (English versions). Loose carts. Please. Sell them to me. :P

Feedback / "My Messages" is broken
06/19/2007, 06:13 PM
You read that right. It says I have 1 new message. So I checked it. Turns out I do not have 1 new message. I have 0 new messages. Disappointed, I deleted all my recent messages hoping the message would go away. It didn't.

So I deleted ALL my messages. Every single one. Now it says 1 new message. Kinda sucks, considering there are no new messages. It makes me think "Oooh! New message!", but when I click it- I see 0 new messages. Actually, now I see 0 messages - neither new or old - since I deleted them all.

What's up with this? A curse? A bug? 1 new [secret] message? Whatever it is, I disapprove of it. :)

Come on. I need a controller but I can't find one on Ebay. They're all expensive and they all overcharge for shipping. I can only pay using paypal and you need to be able to send to Sweden. I bet nobody will reply. :P I don't care what kind of controller it is, as long as it isn't in bad condition.

General Gaming / Multiplayer Shooters
06/10/2007, 10:33 AM
Hey doods, I'm looking for multiplayer shooters for the Saturn, Mega Drive, PS1/PS2, Gamecube and SNES (any region) where you can play two players (simultaneously). It doesn't have to be great. I want a big list.

Hey doods, I'm looking for multiplayer shooters for the PCE (any type of CD game or japanese hu-cards) where you can play two players (simultaneously). It doesn't have to be great. I want a complete list.

I got inspired by CrackTiger's Ys photos in that other thread. It is always so exciting to look at pictures of other people's video game collections, so please post away!

It feels like there's been a similar thread somewhere, or at least I remember looking at pics of Joe Redifer's and some other guy's games, but that might have been in the mug thread. If there's a thread like this somewhere, well, then it's probably dead... so we can post pics here instead. :P

A fun video. Definitely true too, I just wish the CD-i would've been in first place.

Konami's been pumping out practically identical Castlevania games for years now. Which one's the best?

I have to say Symphony of the Night. I consider it one of the best games in the history of the universe (along with Halo 1 and some Zelda games) and I'm not a fan of the other games in the series... aside from Dawn of Sorrow, which I actually enjoyed quite a lot... With the volume turned off though.

General Gaming / Best Zelda game?
05/13/2007, 02:13 PM
So! Which one do you think is the best game in the Zelda series? The CD-i games are obviously excluded, as they aren't actually games.

Personally... I say Ocarina of Time. I'd like to say Twilight Princess, but I can't, as I recently replayed Ocarina of Time and enjoyed it immensely... just like every time I've played through it (5-10 times). While Twilight Princess is the best game I have played since Ocarina of Time itself, it's just not as good. Majora's Mask deserves mention as well, as that game is simply incredible. Too bad it has no replay value for me for some reason. Can't seem to enjoy it again. Additionally, I consider Zelda 3 the best 2d Zelda, but I couldn't possibly vote for that, as I don't like the 2d Zelda games anywhere near as much as the 3d ones.

Off-Topic / Ultra Errors on Pcenginefx!
05/04/2007, 12:45 PM
I've been encountering TONS of errors browsing this board lately. Pages loading slowly, pages not loading at all, images not working, getting random error messages, etc. Seems like the server's going kaput, or is it just me?

Yes you are. Yes you are...

General Gaming / NEC's Best Console?
05/03/2007, 11:28 AM
So! Vote away. And no, I don't want to put this in the PC Engine section, but if you do, move it.

Duo models don't count since they're the same thing in a different case.

*By voting for this, you think Hucards are best overall (Turbo Grafx is included in this)
**By voting for this, you think CDs are best overall (Turbo CD is included in this)
***Then why are you here? :)

Off-Topic / Your Age
05/02/2007, 08:37 AM
Just wondering what the average age might be around here. I hope I am not offending anybody by asking this.

Beginning from 13 since that's the lowest allowed age for registering on a message board. I chose to input individual numbers rather than groups to get more specific results.

I finally got a Tennokoe Bank today, I've been wanting one of these for as long as I can remember. I thought it worked like a standard memory card - turns out it doesn't.

I have a Duo-R and it seems that I cannot use the Tennokoe Bank with it. When I try to save the console's SRAM to the card, it denies it. When I try to view the console's SRAM, it denies it. Can the Tennokoe Bank even do this, or can it only read the save thing for the original PC Engine?

I also wonder, can it be used as a memory card? I E save CD based savegames directly to the card, rather than on the console SRAM? It seems like I can't, because whenever the card is inserted, it is impossible to play a game. Is that true? Can I insert the card after the console has booted, or will this damage things?

Also: can I delete files from the 'Bank? I can view the data on it, but can't seem to delete individual files, or even format the entire thing. Is it possible? If not - what do I do when the card's full? Overwrite files? Is that possible?

Oh, and ... spam. And stuff.

Anybody feel like selling Neutopia 1 or 2 to me? I'm only interested in the american versions, and I don't care if they're complete or not. Got a loose cart or something lying around somewhere? Sell it to me! It's for a good cause as well, I need inspiration for making Neutopia 3 graphics.

You must be able to ship internationally.

PS: I'm also fairly interested in a complete Neutopia 2 japanese version. Only for cheap, though.

Does anybody have an old loose Paladin's Quest cart lying around? If so - sell it to me! ;D I have the box and stuff but I need the actual game. I do not live in North America.

Note that I'm only interested in Paladin's Quest - the North American version, not Lennus, the Japanese equivalent. :)

Feedback / SPAM!!
08/09/2006, 01:38 PM
Maybe it's time to change from PHPBB to something else? The number of spam bots is getting kinda ridiculous, and PHPBB is only good for that purpose (attracting spam bots, that is).

DeluxeBB looks kinda nice (and it's free) - http://www.deluxebb.com

Recently, my Duo-R's been acting strange. I pretty much only play Ys IV on it (a cd-r because I'm playing the translated game) and sometimes when I enter a new area, the game just stops -- no sound, nothing--for 20-30 seconds, then it starts working again. It's like the loading times are insane, except it doesn't make any "loading noise." What could be the cause of this? Is the laser dying?

Off-Topic / Save Invasion!
06/29/2006, 07:18 PM
It appears that ABC has cancelled their fantastic show Invasion...

If you want this show saved, please sign this petition. Even if you don't know what it is, it'd be great if you'd take ten seconds of your time and sign it anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Finally we get a real name for Nintendo's supposedly revolutionary console.

Click here to see for yourself.

Or, if you're lazy... You can just click here to see the new logo.

There's one thing on this page that's always been bothering me, and that is the "PC-Engine/SuperGrafx General Discussion", etc.

Why does it say PC-Engine? That is incorrect.

I know it is not a big deal, but why spell it wrong? I see no good reason to it.

Look at the logo.

I was wondering if somebody know of a way to RGB or S-video modify a PC Engine DUO-R.

I was checking out Gamesx.com and found this, but I'm not sure if it works for this particular console. It does say:

QuoteThe other caveat: this will require open-console surgery. Regardless of the model (PC Engine, TurboGrafx, Vistar) you're going to have to open the console and do some soldering. The good news is the RGB can be tapped from either the video chip itself, or the expansion bus, so these mods will work on any and all PC Engine or TurboGrafx system. This includes the white PCE, the Core and SuperGrafx units, the GT, LT, PC Shuttle, LaserActive, the PAL TG-16, the Korean Vistar, everything! Well, maybe not the clones.

But it does not say PC Engine DUO there. He he, but I guess it works for the DUO as well.

Anyway, are there other guides for this somewhere?

Thanks in advance (and I know this is a pretty dumb question!  :P )!

I was wondering if there's a way to play North American hu-cards on a Japanese PC Engine Duo system.

I know there are converters, but I can't seem to find any on Ebay. What are they called, where do I buy them and what do they usually cost?

Is there a way to modify the console so that it can play BOTH Japanese and North American hu-cards?

....Or is there a way to modify it so that it can play ONLY North American hu-cards?

Thanks in advance.

I have a PAL TV with SCART, AV, RF and S-video plugs. It's compatible with 60Hz signals (i.e. NTSC signals).

I was wondering if I can use a PC Engine Duo with this TV, or do I need to perform some kind of modification?

Thanks in advance.

I'm interested some of the following PC Engine titles:

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys - PC Engine

The Legend of Xanadu - PC Engine
The Legend of Xanadu II - PC Engine

Dragon Slayer VI: The Legend of Heroes - PC Engine

Sorcerian - PC Engine
Popful Mail - PC Engine

North American titles

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes
Ys Book I & II (must be boxed)
Ys III: Wanderers From Ys (must be boxed)

+ any other Falcom titles that I may have forgotten at the moment.

Hello!

I really want a Super CD-ROM2-playing system. I'd like the console to be as cheap as possible (boxes, manuals, etc are unneccessary) (I'm kinda short on money).

So, anybody's got anything for sale?  :)
