[Off-Topic / So tell me, what have I missed?]

Been a while, thought I'd rejoin the ranks of the posting/contributing.  At quick glance around I see some awesome mod/repair work too.  This has always been one of the best stops for help (that and the NFG forums where I cut my teeth many years back).

Life is busy as usual for me but things are going fairly well these days.  Can't complain.

So, what's up?

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Duo giving corrupted graphics on power up]

Ok, the title is not telling the whole tale. 

Working on a Duo for someone and the problem is that on power up, you get one of these events:
1.  solid color screen, sometimes with a hum
2.  graphic and sometimes sound distortion (jumbled, not blurred/wavy)
3.  perfect startup and play

Now this happens with both HuCard or the BIOS screen, so it doesn't appear to be slot related.

Things I've tried so far with no change in outcome:
1.  Replaced all large caps
2.  Swapped AC inlets
3.  Replaced the fuse and diode
4.  Different power supplies
5.  resoldered all cart slot points
6.  Resoldered at heat sinks/voltage regulators
7.  Checked all IC contacts for shorts

The only thing I can find that seems a bit unusual is that the voltage at the voltage regulators is coming in at 12.4V whereas on other systems I have it's more like 11.2-11.4V.  The regulators are putting out the normal 5.0V, but I'm wondering if the voltage coming in is the problem.  The problem there is that like I said all points leading into the regulators have been either swapped or checked and seem fine. 

WHAT AM I MISSING????

I usually pull it off the S-Video circuit when I do that, but I'm going to do a Duo without S-Video, but RGB.  Thoughts, opinions?

Know how your system shows the blue/orange/whatever solid color screen when the HuCard is in and not reading correctly?  Yeah, I'm seeing that with no HuCard on a Duo, instead of the normal Super CD Rom "Press Run" screen.  But the system boots HuCards fine.  So is it not seeing the System 3 on chip?  I just finished a cap overhaul on it and the sound is fine.  I haven't tried putting a system card in the Hu slot, probably try that later tonight.  Any idea?  What IC is responsible for the system so I can track down any pulled/crossed traces?

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Using Magical Chase spells]

OK, now that I'm playing Magical Chase again, I'm trying to figure out how to use the spells.  I know pushing fire twice uses it, from the left to the right, but do you have to use the spells in that order or can you select different ones?

I ask because I have some units that I can now fix both the audio and video on.  The video one seems to work very well with maybe a slight warm up at the first few uses.  Note these are brand new in box.

So, what is it?  I notice there's an eBay seller going by "turbophoenix2000" that has used the audio fix and sold units at around $150+ship.  No mention of the video caps being swapped or not and one auction was going to do the cap swap at $199.

A note about the shipping price.  Typically 3-4 games is $7.50.

The rules of the game here: 
- PayPal accepted, money orders are fine too, international no problem
- Prices do not include shipping or PayPal fee
- I prefer not to hold items.  Why?  Because it's already a major pain in the ass to keep an accurate inventory of what I have and what's sold.  And sometimes things on hold become things not sold
- Price matching:  I know it's possible that these prices may not be the absolute cheapest you can find and you're welcome to point me at a listing of a game (same condition and level of completeness please) and I'll try to at least match it

A note about the shipping price.  Typically 3-4 games is $7.50.  Anything over 1 lb and that fits in a priority flat rate box is $8.95 for shipping.  I think I can get 30+ games in one of those boxes, definitely 20 or more, depending on if they're single or double CD cases.

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Region Mod PCBs available and Online Guide completed!]

9/26/07 UPDATE:  I have finished a thorough guide for installing this PCB!  Please visit my website at www.multimods.com and click on the "New! PCE Region Modification" link on the left side of the page. 

First off, let me spend the top of this space thanking Ben Moran for designing and printing the first run of these PCBs months ago.
 
Although others had outlined the PCB method, he was the first I know to step up and get the damn things printed.  With that he opened the door for modding more system such as the CoreGrafx and Turbo Express due to the small size of the PCB.  And for that, as I mentioned previously, the "Moran 1.0" is still there on the PCB itself.  Thanks Ben, for designing this and allowing me to continue with the PCBs by sharing your layout.

OK, now the good stuff.

As the below picture shows, the new PCBs are identical except for the mask and screen now since I went with a production run of the boards.  Very nice quality and works great.  What these boards will do for you is allow you to switch the HuCard slot region on any NEC system.  Yes, ANY system, including Duo, DuoR, DuoRX, TG16, CoreGrafx I/II, PC Engine, Turbo Express, PC Engine GT, and SuperGrafx.  Even the LT?  Probably, but I'll let you do that.  Same for the LaserActive.  Note that with japanese systems you'll need to ground pin 29 on the processor, which if you're good enough to do the mod anyways, should be easy for you. 

Cost per board:  $15 +shipping ($4.60 for Priority mail, $1.50 for regular 1st class)
To install it, you'll need:
- SPDT switch (available readily at Radio Shack)
- wrapping wire (30 gauge stuff, also at the Shack)
- wire cutter, wire stripper
- drill and file for cutting and shaping the hole for the switch
- proper bit for opening whatever system you have

Oh, and I've decided to give back to Ben on this stuff.  Every board sold is $1 for Ben for just being a great member of the community.

Sound daunting to do yourself?  Send me your system and I'll do it for $35 shipped for the small guys (PCE, Core, Core II), $40 for the bigger ones (Duo, SGx, etc).  I'm not yet doing the Turbo Express/GT mods myself yet due to a couple of factors, but probably in the future.

[Console Repair/Mod Center / the Return of Moran 1.0: region mod PCBs to be available soon!]

As some of you may know, grahf designed a PCB for the region modification that allows us to no longer require a physical 8PDT switch.  That little PCB, just bigger than a quarter, fits in everything and makes region modification of PCE/Core type systems and even the GT/Express possible.  Unfortunately, grahf is out of the country for the foreseeable future for some higher education, so the boards had become unavailable.

To make a long story short, I asked Ben if he would allow me to continue producing the boards for him, using his template completely unaltered and such is now the case.  I have an order of the PCBs due within the next two weeks and I've sourced the chips for the PCB as well.  The boards will be identical to his design and include "Moran 1.0" as a reminder of the member that laid them out

As for pricing, at the moment I don't plan on changing Ben's pricing structure which I need to confirm with him.

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Component on a Duo]

So, to confirm the scattered reports out there, component video, using the JROK component only board, DOES work fine on a Duo, in this case, a DuoR.  Got it all hooked up last night in process on another mod and BAM! 

One note about doing this, you need to get the sync signal off of the composite video output, not from the #44 pin on the processor.  And you need to strip the signal, in my case with the LM1881.

So, now what to do with those encoders I have..... 

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / What do you think the Hacker/GE games are worth?]

It's meant to be both philosophical and economical.  I have some I'm unloading, so I'm curious what people think fair prices are.  Also, I'm wondering what people think the gameplay value is.  From personal experience, Strip Fighter II was god awful as the hit detection is terrible and the animation is wonky.  Shinsetsu 2 is what it is.  The game is meant for one thing and that it does well.  AV Poker is alright if not a bit boring, but it's not any worse that comparable official games.  But with the others, as RPGs, I can't really judge since I can't read/speak the language.  Thoughts?

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Low CD spindle?]

So, I've found in many cases that a Duo/R/RX won't spin because the damn CD spindle itself is too low.  Nothing to do with the HOP-M3 assembly, just the spindle itself.  Does anyone know how to lift that little sucker up?

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Guess who's back... and it's awesome to see this place]

Well I've been out of it for nearly a year and I won't get into it much right now.  I've had a lot of stuff going down in nearly every aspect of my life and now it's starting to calm down. 

First and foremost I'd like to apologize sincerely to anyone that has tried to contact me and hasn't gotten a response.  I just wasn't able to commit time to modding and answering the e-mails was an unfortunate casualty in that regard.  Again, I'm very sorry to anyone that has tried to contact me.

Second thing I have to say is I'm very impressed with everyone's efforts here.  In the short time I've been reading through threads here just now it's awesome how much progress has been made here in the mods!!  grahf, nice work on the mods and PCBs.  Cool cool stuff.  I'll be in touch  ;)   And it's great seeing that the Duo sound problems have gotten further attention and seems to be solved.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Interest in S-Video encoders for sale?]

I'm toying with the idea of selling the encoders I make for the Turbo.  Perhaps a kit with the needed S-Video mount too.

I ask here and not in the sales forums because it's not really a sales question but a question about whether people would want to do it themselves.  I also have gotten to the point where I need to order more chips and the price is about $20 higher.  Meaning, in the very near future, rather than the price of the mod being $60 plus shipping (about $75), it'll be about $80 plus shipping.  So instead I can sell the encoders for about $60 plus only about $5 shipping.  Cheaper option for folks.  You see, I need to order the encoder chip itself in quantities of about 50 which ain't cheap.

[PC/Console/Mobile Ports / GameCube Bonk: Good times]

I searched here and found nothing about the GameCube Bonk game released about, what, 2 years ago?  Surprised me.

Anyways, I've had the game forever and decided to really give it a go, not my normal 15 minute attempt at playing with the little time I had.  And it was fun.

Graphics:  Stunning for the large part and the animations are great.  Has a bit of the Paper Mario 2 feel to it and that's a good thing.  Some weird crap in the game, but that's probably more an effect of the Japanese-ness of it.

Sound:  Good, but nothing super special.  For my money the music in Bonk's Revenge is still #1.  The meat-eating sound drives me nuts though.

Gameplay:  Now this is the important part.  It feels enough like the originals that you like it.  The level designs are close to the original Bonk for the most part too with obvious updates and tweeks.  But the balance is way off.  Some of the boss battles are HARD.  I mean, I was audibly PISSED a few times.  Cheap bastards.  The other thing was the final level is very very long, nearly as long as all the stages combined.  The action and fun was there, but just felt weird.  Kept me guessing the whole time, which, I guess, is a good thing though.  

Would I recommend buying it?  Since you need the Freeloader disc and the game disc and you'd need to import it, maybe not for the casual fan.  But definitely for the Bonk fiend.  

I did beat it in about 2.5-3 hours.  On the first real time through.  But realize I've played the originals about 200-300 hours probably  

[Console Repair/Mod Center / REPAIR GUIDE - TurboDuo: Sound Fix]

Yes, you read that right!!

Note that this is a fix for a SPECIFIC sound issue, but the big one.  For this to work you will need to PROPERLY identify the problem with your system.  There is more than one problem that can occur with Turbo Duo systems and I think this is going to work for many.

OK, the problem and diagnosis.  Here are typical issues with Duo systems:
1.  CD plays and loads fine, but all redbook audio (soundtrack, not sound effects) is dead.
2.  audio is scratchy and may fade in and out, but the CD games load and play no problem (well, except for sound, duh)
3.  CD play is sketchy and the drive sounds like it's struggling.  More than just a sound issue

This fix seems to work mainly for the #2 case and maybe for #1.  I need to test more systems though to be clear on what it works on.  It should work for both, but I won't commit to that without further study.

So, some of you may have seen my hypothesis about what the sound issue is due to and after struggling for a way to prove it, I've finally found a way to study it.  I blame the sound issue on overheating with the Duo model and have stated that the later DuoR and RX should be problem free due to placement of the audio components in relation to the heat sinks.  But how to study the problem when you need the CD drive running, yet the cover off?  The CD lid is required to keep the CD spinning.

At this point I'd like to take a moment to mourn the loss of a PC Engine Duo that gave it's life so others may live:

I cut the top up so I could test the components while running.  Don't worry, the unit itself was already dead anyways. 

OK, so, look at the area need the heat sinks:

In the yellow circle I highlight key components.  The 10 uF caps on the left and right are controlling the left and right channel pre and post amp.  The little 8-pin chip in the middle is an op-amp that is needed to process the sound.  After tapping around on these, I found that the POST op-amp caps are indeed the ones responsible for the sound level and the scratching you sometimes hear.  Sweet!  These come from an era in the early 90's when there was rumored to be a problem with capacitor production.  Dry cap likely.  This is the same issue as with the Turbo Express that I covered before.

So then I ripped the bastards out and soldered down a couple of brand new 10 uF, 50V caps:

Simple as hell and cheap, <$1 for the parts.  Of course you need a special screwdriver bit to even open the thing, but hey....

And that's that!  As said, I'm still working on what can and can't be repaired with this problem.  More details will come when I can figure that out too.

And as it turns out I am figuring out how to deal with problem #3, wonky CD drive performance.  Hallmark is the grinding, whining, whistling, stopping, grunting CD drive and game pausing, slow loading.  There are 5 little screws in the unit that directly effect the drive performance so hopefully that will be fruitful.

Major thanks to Saibot and monads for supplying Duo's to look at.  Hopefully I can fix theirs too.

There is the potential that I may be able to take your working Turbo Express, with sound issues is OK, but screen must work, and turn it into a "new" system.  Meaning, I put the innards of your TE into a brand new case with new screen and also include the box, packing styrofoam, and manual, all new.

What would be a good price for such?

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Time Cruise: better than the Crushes?]

I for the longest time have held out that Alien Crush is by far and away the best pinball on TG, with respect to Devil's Crush which is great in it's own right.  I always had something special for Alien Crush though.

But.

Recently I have become reacquainted with Time Cruise and it's a lot of fun.  Much deeper than the Crush games and pretty graphics for sure.  I just can't decide though if it's got that *feel*, you know?  There is a certain charm to the others, but does that make them better than Time Cruise?

Yeah that's right, I'm hot on the trail of the problem with these, specifically with the sound although I might have found a bit of a way to fix CD issues too.

So, if you've got a Turbo or PCE Duo that has faulty soundtrack audio (Redbook audio), this is what I'm most interested in seeing.  Your Duo should meet the following description:

- loads and plays CD games fine
- no music heard, only in game sound effects
- CD drive isn't making loud noises (although these might be good too)
- HuCard music may or may not work too

Really I just need to get my hands on some to test my fix on more units.  In terms of what's in it for you, I can either fix it or I can't.  If you want to unload it if it's not fixable, we can come to an arrangement.  If you want credit towards another system, that's doable too.  If it can be fixed, you pay a nominal fee to be determined.  (like $10 plus shipping it will probably be).

[Console Repair/Mod Center / REPAIR GUIDE - TurboExpress: Sound Fix]

Haha, not the biggest news in my world, which would be the Turbo Duo sound fix, but this is the other scourge of the Turbo World! 

I was discussing the problems with Duo units with TZD's Steve and he mentioned that by far and away the biggest problem for them has been weak/no sound from Turbo Express units, even brand new ones!  So I asked if he could send a unit of two and I'd look into it.  Tried contacting RetroGames Bob Frasure, but no luck (still, if anyone has a way to contact him please let me know!).  So off I went with the multimeter.

So I sat with a TE with a weak speaker and started tracing the circuit back, looking for the culprit which I figured had to be a dead/dry capacitor or dead op amp IC.  Since there is a dense mask on the system, I had to do a lot of scraping and shining of light through the PCB to find the contacts.  Here's what that looked like:

Notice the Op Amp for the sound highlighted and two little holes through the PCB.  These holes are the + and - of a capacitor that leads to the input into the op amp for the audio are also tied to the speaker line which is just above the "03" in L103 on the PCB.  Those holes are connected to this capacitor:


So, I figured, likely culprit.  I tapped a new 100 uF, 25 Volt capacitor to the proper holes and SUCCESS@!!@!!   The sound amplified to a normal level!!!!!!  What I've noticed is that there are varying degrees of the sound issue from weak sound to no sound.  This mod works with both and even in the worse case it is amped to a satisfactory level.  Meaning there is likely another cap somewhere that needs looking at, but this fix will definitely work.

Here's step-by-step instructions on how to do this.  I can't make linking pics here to the bigger versions of these, but if you copy the location of the image I have and simply remove the "a" that's after the number, before the ".jpg", then you will get the 800 x 600 version.

OK, on the back of your TE, remove the 4 screws on the outside and the two inside the battery compartment:


CAREFULLY separate the front and back of the unit enough that you can disconnection these connections.  The flat cables should be wiggled gently back and forth to make them loose.


On the rear part of the unit, remove the screw indicated in the pic.  Note that the two holes we're soldering too are located where the arrow is pointing:

Here's the culprit.  You can twist the cap off with a pair of pliers but leaving it in is no problem.


Now take an electrolytic 100uF cap (25 V is what I used, but you can use 10V, 15V, etc) and connect two wires to it, preferably close to the cap body as shown so most of the wire and terminals are coved by insulation.  I used wrapping wire (30 gauge), but you can use 22 gauge, which is pushing it on how small the spots you're soldering too are.  Wires should be about 1.5-2" long.


And now connected:


Here I've tucked the cap under the PCB where there is ample space to hold it.  Note in the picture I have also added a short wire between two places on the PCB.  This is connecting the right and left channels on this unit since the right channel was dead.  I'm sure the issue with it can be solved, but this works great for addressing the problem at hand.


Now with the PCB reset to it's place, note the location of the wires.  All you have to do now is screw in the proper screws and reconnect the cables (carefully!  I use needlenose pliers for the flat cables so I don't bend them) and you're done!!!


So, there it is.  You can buy the capacitor dirt cheap in packs of 10-100 from DigiKey or Jameco and even Radio Shack has the capacitor.  All you need after that is 3" of wire and soldering equipment.  Oh, and a small Phillips head screwdriver.

If you need yours fixed, I will probably start offering to fix them for people shortly.  Shipping plus maybe $10 for the fix.  So about $20 shipped back to you (you pay shipping out, and then it's about $10 back to you).  I figure there are a lot of people that are nervous about soldering such small connections and opening anything electronic like this, so I'll probably offer to do this.  We shall see on this, but most importantly I wanted to make this available for everyone!

Yes, you read that right!!!  A NEW boxed PC Engine Duo Battery/Charger pack, as well as a boxed PCE Duo!

Unfamiliar with the Duo Battery?  Fits on the back of the unit, snapping into the slots on your Duo so it can be used on the road!  And this is the complete pack with the battery and charger (a separate battery-only pack was sold too).  The box may be worn, but the units are still sealed!  I'm not sure of the value (have an idea), so I'm taking offers on this really unusual item!
