Title: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: OldRover on 08/26/2012, 11:41 PM
Wasn't planning on doing this just yet, as we were waiting for everything to be all in one place, but it seems our hand was tipped early so might as well. Keranu received the shipment of discs and we're set to release it now. However, the bonus items are still in manufacturing, so they're not quite ready yet. So, for the first 100 people, you can either hang on 'til they're ready (about a week or two from now) and have it shipped all at once, or get the game disc now and the bonus items later. Let me know which.

I have a few questions, where do we order this from? How much are you guys charging for this game? Is this going to be on a cdr or actually pressed? Thanks!

It's a total of $39.95 which includes shipping to anywhere in the world. It's a properly manufactured disc, not a CDR, and comes with a full-color 8-page manual as well as a full-color inlay. It can be ordered at https://web.archive.org/web/2000/http://www.frozenutopia.com/ :)

Those are some awesome pics. I love how you've made the back of the manual look like an authentic Turbo game, with the suggested games list made up of homebrews. Totally awesome! :D
Title: Re: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: OldRover on 08/27/2012, 01:23 AM
They're all legit games too, with the exception of Retrocade, which was apparently discontinued as a whole project after the manuals were printed.

Which means they could sign or otherwise mark them before shipping. That way we can harass whoever puts theirs on eBay for eleventy billion dollars once they sell out. :D

Hurray.  The Adventure is over!

That's funny that Retrocade is on there.  It's not exactly discontinued.  It's just delayed as fuck because at the time, HuCards weren't going to be happening.

and yeah, FUCK SHRINKWRAP.

Shit's for PUSSIES.

Where's my copy.  I want to beat it.

Also, for next years CCAG, you guys can send me a box of them and I will see if anyone buys them.

Did you find any cracked cases yet?  You're bound to find some.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: OldRover on 08/27/2012, 11:02 AM
Yeah, Keranu said that there's a few busted ones. Sounds like all the discs themselves are fine though.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: Arkhan Asylum on 08/27/2012, 11:11 AM
Yeah.  There's a reason jewelcases are dirt cheap... lol

It's an unavoidable problem though.  No amount of foam / padding will protect the cases.  They crack due to the weight of the surrounding jewel cases pressing all in one direction.   all it takes is one solid thunk on one side!  All the weight causes some cracks sometimes.

It doesn't help that they ship with UPS.   Those guys probably used the giant Nationwide boxes as a lunch table / bench.  lol

HURRY UP AND SHIP MY COPY.

I can't wait for them to pop up on ebay for OMGRAER prices

I think that's Rover's wife that put them up there, but yeah, this stops the comical trainwreck ebay prices that other homebrew has fallen victim to.

If these are already officially on eBay, I wonder if that one guy who wanted to buy like half of them will still bother?
Title: Re: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: Arkhan Asylum on 08/27/2012, 01:10 PM
probably not unless he runs some kind of store where he will sell them for 45$ instead and claim they are rare.

Its coming out of Crete, IL. I was under the assumption that was where Keranu was from, or is he just handling the shipping of them?

Are the developers/programmers planning on creating more games in the future?

I was able to arrange a local pickup since I live less than 15 miles away from the Mysterious Song stash!  Woo!  Hoo!
I went from just discovering the Turbo CD homebrew scene to actually having one of these in my hands, all in the same day!

Now, I just have to make some time in my squished schedule to play this...

I don't know if it's a big enough difference to warrant mentioning (after all, a sale is a sale) but they probably make a bit more on the sale when ordered directly off their website (no add'l ebay fees to pay).

On eBay, I would up the price a little to account for that.  But, like ya said Dan, a sale is a sale.  I seen where someone asked what the game was on the listing.  So, being on eBay is going to give it the maximum exposure.

Keranu and I just finished playing a two-player co-op session of Mysterious Song. I don't know why the multi-player campaign isn't given greater attention. It should be promoted as a key feature! :pcgs:

The ebay listing was done for additional exposure and to negate the possibility of price gouging until some time after all the copies sell. Making money off of this isn't our priority, more like a perk... the real deal is just having a new game for teh loyal obeyers to play. :)

Yes you should get a email sent to your Pay Pal address with the tracking number. Unless you're outside of US, since I can't print labels for those orders online yet.

I didn't see this game on GameFAQs yet, so I just submitted it to them to hopefully be added to their list of Turbo CD games.  I hope that others are trying to get this game added to other websites' lists of Turbo CD games.  I don't see a Wikipedia article about this game yet, either, and I hope that someone with more intimate knowledge of this game can get an article written up and added.

IMHO: The more that the word gets out, the more people will purchase a copy and the developers can either be somewhat compensated for their labor of love and/or can use the funds to develop more Turbo CD games.

It would be nice, if, when the game is ordered (like I did from https://web.archive.org/web/2000/http://www.frozenutopia.com/ ), that the purchaser gets some kind of e-mail confirmation.  I mean, I got an e-mail confirmation from PayPal that I paid, but that's it.  No "Thank you for your order, it's on its way" or "Thank you for your order, we expect more in stock at such-and-such a time".  I even PM'd Rover.  Not a single response.  All I have is a PayPal receipt to something called boricuagoodies.com. Customers do like status updates and confirmations.  But with that weird admin@boricuagoodies.com e-mail address and looking at the cheesy www.boricuagoodies.com website, I feel I may have been scammed.  Frozen Utopia isn't handling the actual selling of this item very well.

Seriously lol. Not to knock Rover or anything either on this, but on the about page it states:

QuoteIf you are a Puerto Rican living in the United States, then you probably know how difficult it is to find products from companies here in Puerto Rico. Names like Goya and Bohio are grossly underrepresented in the United States. Spanish sections of grocery stores rarely have anything aside from taco shells and salsa. And all of your favorite spices and condiments are nowhere to be seen.
To me it almost sounds like him and his wife have not been to a stateside grocery store in years. Basically every single store I go to for groceries has a huge Spanish section of canned, bottled, and dried goods both, along with a semi-decent Asian section.

Tracking confirm is emailed to the buyer's Pay Pal account automatically when I print the labels. I had a default order confirmation email I would send out when ordering was made to my Pay Pal account.

If something isn't working correctly, blame Paypal. The code is programmed to send people to a landing page on Frozen Utopia when you order. If it's not working, then Paypal is being douchey again.

Curious, where all are you having to ship to, and is there good money involved? The only places I would think this would do well is maybe in certain northern states where the Hispanic population is extremely low to where stores could not justify carrying perishable goods that wont sell well or enough. I mean, I have access to tons of stuff, so basically I could do the same thing as you if there is real money involved in this. You have peaked my interest. I am surprised my sons friend Herson or his dad hasn't mentioned this because he has tons of relatives all over the US.

Edit:
I mean stuff like the Goya beans you sell for $1.59, I can get them online for like less then 33 bucks for 24 cans. The Criada pink beans I cant get without actually looking, but Goya actually sells them too and I can pick up their stuff locally or online cheap. Basically the same applies to stuff like the tomato sauce products you are selling, grain rice, soda etc. I guess if you really shipped out enough per week you could do well. Just wonder how much of a customer base you would need to justify the effort and all.

We're actually the cheapest direct exporter of Puerto Rican brands in Puerto Rico. There are other companies which might sell a few things cheaper, but they're either mainland companies who buy in bulk or simply don't have the same selection. Companies here on the island who export like we do charge a hell of a lot more than we do. And we're finding new ways of reducing the prices all the time, usually by dealing directly with the companies. Most people who buy from us won't go to the mainland companies because they're run by gringos.

I wasn't aware Rover was Hispanic either, though I knew his wife was, let alone they had a store going... So do you have a fairly big customer base so far, and how long have you been doing this? Did you get customers via word of mouth mainly through facebook and the such?

I think rover was putting the link in his signature here for awhile.

I bought a shit load of adobo, pineapple soda, and those cans of animalcracker-like-cookies.

I still have the Adobo.  All 4 flavors.    The red criolowhatever one is the best variety.

You know, and not Hispanic food related, but one thing that seems to be hard to get in some areas is pickled okra. I've sent a few jars off and on to Sini since they don't seem to be available in his area. I can buy the stuff all day long but evidently its just not carried everywhere.

I'm not Hispanic but the wifey is, yeah. We have a relatively large customer base with new customers every couple of weeks or so... mostly repeat business though, with the occasional one-timer. It's been a couple of years now since we set up shop. Mostly word of mouth promotion, but I occasionally try to slip in a link or two on forums where people are looking for specific products. Customers don't deal with me though, they communicate with her. I pretty much just do the shipping when need be.

One of the advantages we have over mainland companies is that we can do rapid custom orders. If there's something a customer wants that isn't on our site, we can get it quickly, and usually for a good price too. Most exporters here don't even offer that service, which is lame... but I guess an advantage for us. :)

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 09/01/2012, 07:22 PMYou know, and not Hispanic food related, but one thing that seems to be hard to get in some areas is pickled okra. I've sent a few jars off and on to Sini since they don't seem to be available in his area. I can buy the stuff all day long but evidently its just not carried everywhere.
Pickled okra is the shit! I could eat a dozen jars if I felt like it.

Old Rover - are you (or Keranu) selling as ebay user "equuskia"?

Don't want to order from someone ripping off your good work.

My game arrived today, after ordering it only like 2-3 days ago. I haven't popped it in yet, but I'm impressed by the quality of the packaging and the look of the disc. Everything is spot-on. The manual is in color so the packaging is arguably superior to previous US Super CD games.

ASIDE: I love how intrigued M.H. (Professor) was with Rover's export business. :pcgs:

BACK ON TOPIC: I know this sounds silly, but the one thing I look forward to the most is... listening to the Mysterious Song soundtrack. I'm only going to be able to play MSR: The Game in bits and pieces. But I'll be able to listen to the soundtrack immediately and continuously. :pcgs:

I conceived an idea of making the bonus soundtrack CD+G compatible so you can actually pop it in your Turbo to watch scrolling visuals as an extra. We've been working with TheOldMan on getting this to work, but unfortunately we just didn't have the time to implement it for the release. Oh well, we're hoping it will work for Jungle Bros soundtrack.

YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT I AM GOING TO SAY:

I would love for folks to create new CD+G experiences. It was a technology that must be pushed to the limit in 2012. I don't need miracles, but I want some really wonderful CD+G action on my TG-CD.

Arkhan, I'm talking to you, too.

CD+G is where it's at for all audio releases, IMHO.

Certainly for Turbo-related audio, but if I had my way, records would all be released on dual discs with DVD content. As much as I love obsolete technology (CD+G's), there's nothing like listening to Bruce Springsteen or Nick cave in surround sound with the lyrics right there on the screen and maybe an interview elsewhere on the disc.

Unfortunately, none of these formats seem to catch on - CD+G, Enhanced, Dual Disc, etc. Apparently the average listener prefers blowing their eardrums out with MP3's on earbuds.

I know. Even folks with handheld, portable devices (be it Phone or dedicated handheld) think that headphones/earbuds are their only choice for decent sound.

Of course, this isnt their only choice:

It's "cruel and unusual punishment" that the one's who ordered first have the longest wait while people who placed their order last week already have it. I have next week off from work for 'staycation' so I hope it arrives then when I'll have plenty of time for OBEY.

See the first post of this thread. The ones who ordered first have no longer of a wait than anyone else, unless they choose to. They do however, get the bonus set that people who only heard of this game last week missed out on completely.

Why didn't the copies come sealed? That was why I ordered it in the first place. There's also a huge crack on the front case. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is out to resell in the future, but it would have been a nice gesture if it was 'sealed'. Would have ordered two copies.

There's a huge crack on your copy? PM me your address and I'll send you a new one ASAP. This is why I use priority flat rate boxes + bubblewrap.

The envelopes, while padded, don't do dick against weight related cracking unless you pad it to some idiotic thickness..

If you wrap your fist in bubblewrap and push down on a jewelcase, you can still cause stress cracks.

Rigid cardboard prevents this jive.

Sure it costs a bit more to ship, but hey, fuck it. It's worth it!

I bought some bubble wrap yesterday that I've been using. I think the new bubble mailers I bought should do just fine by themselves, the other envelopes I was using had too much extra space in them; I originally planned on using them for the pre-orders so there was enough room to hold the game + DVD case.

There are those little brown bubble mailers from scotch/ducttape, etc

They work alright, but I still don't trust that shit.

Boxes + Bubblewrap.  I love boxes.   Plus, the boxes are free as fuck!

I'll be picking up some of the free boxes at the post office too. They don't carry the padded envelopes there anyways.

Quote from: PikachuWarrior on 09/05/2012, 11:44 PMWhy didn't the copies come sealed? That was why I ordered it in the first place. There's also a huge crack on the front case. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is out to resell in the future, but it would have been a nice gesture if it was 'sealed'. Would have ordered two copies.
There's a huge crack on your copy? PM me your address and I'll send you a new one ASAP. I've been examining all the copies before shipping them to make sure they're in pristine condition, your copy must've received damage during shipping. I've switched to smaller, more padded envelopes now too to ensure safety.
Keranu, I admire your professionalism, but Storino in no way deserves a replacement. Cracked jewel cases are a fact of life. Paper envelopes, padded envelopes, bubble mailers, or boxes, it doesn't matter; I've pulled cracked cases out of every conceivable package. From slobs on ebay, to corporations like Amazon and CDbaby, to meticulous record collectors on Gemm.com, humanity simply has yet to invent a foolproof shipping method for jewel cases. (The best cost/safety compromise I've found is to just use a bubble mailer, but put a little square of bubblewrap inside the jewel case to distribute pressure, between the disc and the cover.)

Also, it's not like a cracked jewel case is in anyway a hardship. Reasonable people don't care. If they do, modern cases are easily swapped and can be purchased for pennies. Sometimes it's difficult to find a perfectly-fitting cover for old Turbochip cases, but Myserious Song uses a modern case.

Finally, Storino's whining guilt trip doesn't even make sense:
1) he ordered the game because he thought it was sealed,
2) he's pissed that it wasn't sealed,
3) if it had been sealed he would have ordered two... even though he only ordered one back when he thought it was sealed.

What a fucking pussy. I doubt he was even planning to open and play the game.

The only thing I'm not satisfied about MSR's packaging is the jewel case. From first glance they look like a real Turbo game, but there's definitely a quality loss in the cases Nationwide Disc uses. They feel thinner and cheaper, even more prone to breaking than the thicker ones used back in the 80's and 90's. I plan on swapping the inserts from my own personal copy into a better case. It's not a huge deal, just a little nitpick I have.

As far as Storino, I can understand wanting to have a sealed copy; it would feel great to tear open a fresh, new Turbo game like the old days. But as everyone's said, it's not worth the extra production cost to have eBay scammers to spike the cost of our game and rig the market, as they're so eager to do!

I plan on swapping out the cheap NWD cases of a couple copies into real Turbo and PCE cases and storing them along side my segregated Turbo and PCE games.

I suggest to anyone who wants a quality unbroken case (which will remain uncracked) to buy a cdr or cheap CD that comes with a nice case and swap it out for the cheap ones that MS comes with. The cheap case is the only part of the game that doesn't reflect any of the work we put into the game.

Pretty much this. I will order once I'm no longer broke, and not being sealed has no bearing on that decision. But yes, there is something satisfying about liberating a brand new game from its cellophane wrapping.

I would have loved to have had it factory sealed... so I could tear it open. I have a stack of sealed Turbo and PCE games that I am waiting to open until I have the time to immediately play through them afterward. It is a big deal for me, just as I stare at the Now Loading screen of new CD games without blinking to fully take a the game for the first time. But I totally get the reasons for getting them un-sealed.

However, gougers, collectors, etc will still have their kind of fun with it anyway. All that the lack of cellophane means, is that any loose copy can be professionally graded, as they are as they come new. There are likely multiple copies already sent to the VGA.

Nice, I preordered 3 copies. One to keep sealed, one to open, and one to resell.
I guess an apology is in order, as the reasons behind the decision to not have the games sealed was in fact directed at people like storino03. On the bright side, at least it is an actual game that can be played for only the price of a single copy of a game soundtrack.

I would hate to see MSR share the same fate with first runs of Pier Solar. I haven't looked on eBay lately but the last copy I saw was at MGC and it was listed at $240. I still have my first run copy, but I don't look at it and see dollar signs. I look at as a piece of Mega Drive history and a great game to boot. I guess it would be optimistic to think that the PC Engine community would be immune to such shenanigans, but at least the shrinkwrap decision will cool the fire some.

Actually, I was being sarcastic about Pier Solar and having three copies. I only purchased one of the reprint edition. Didn't even know about it until this past January. I haven't opened it, but I do plan on buying a play copy sometime when it's not as expensive (for a new one on their website).

Also, if you want, you can check my ebay account (storino03). I don't resell games that I keep sealed or find in the wild (used). Unless it wasn't my liking when I tried it out, but that is super rare. It usually ends up going to the collection.

Jewel cases have gotten cheaper in general.

Brand new CDs from the store sometimes have the same cases.   They are noticeably weaker.   It's basically a toss-up.

As I posted in the other thread about recent purchases, my copy came yesterday.  The front part of the case had the hinge broken off.  The back part of the case had a large crack.  The inside black plastic CD holder had several tabs broken off, but was still holding the disc firmly in place (unlike EU Dreamcast cases where the disc flops around the second any of the tabs come off).  The disc itself was fine.  I just swapped it out with one of the many spare CD cases I have on hand.  Obviously the damage happened during shipping.  But the disc was fine so I didn't get worked up about it.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about the shipping, thankfully I'm all out of those loose poly bubble mailers. In any event you do want a new original case, I'll gladly send you one free of charge. The hinges seem to be particularly vulnerable, that's where I've noticed the most broken pieces of plastic from the bulk that was shipped to me. One case had a hinge that was jammed and wouldn't even open.

Just a quick update on the status of the bonus stuff: one of my drives died and I was unable to continue the process. I've ordered a replacement drive which will be here in a few days so I can finish it up. 44 discs remain to complete. I'm going to go ahead and mail the first 50 to Keranu so he can get them out to people... the rest will come as soon as the replacement drive arrives and I can finish the remaining discs.

I received my copy today and I'm really digging it. I have noticed something weird, though. The loading times are very erratic. Whenever I enter a battle, the load times vary between two seconds all the way up to nearly half a minute. I've never seen this before, not even in beta testing.

Even so, I'm really enjoying the game and I can't wait to see what else you guys have in store! Thank you so much for putting in all those years of effort! :D

I haven't received mine yet, but I'm taking that as a good sign. I remember being one of the last few to get in on the bonus so I'm guessing that's why mine hasn't arrived yet. Yay!

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this project! I still won't be able to play the darn game until I get my Duo repaired, but it was a real treat to be able to support such a cool project from some really great folks.

You're order #42, qualified for the bonus item! Yours should be getting shipped soon, hopefully this week, but it will take a couple weeks to reach New Zealand.

Wouldn't it be easier to just make a list of all the members and their order # so they can just look and not have to pester ya about it?

Everyone will also know where they stand on the bonus items situation. Just a thought.

I don't have the actual usernames listed in the order log and I don't suppose customers would be too thrilled about having their full names or email addresses listed publically :D . Oh well, doesn't bother me so if anyone wants to know their order # just PM me or post here.

Still waiting on the first batch of bonus discs to arrive in the mail. I haven't heard much from Rover lately, but he's been looking for a new lightscribe burner to finish the remaining discs. If anyone would like just the copy of the game sent to them, please let us know and I'll get it out to you immediately.

The discs were sent to Keranu awhile back, but USPS says it's still in transit.

As soon as they arrive, Keranu will start mailing them out and let everyone know.

Apparently you didn't read the thread, so I'll sum it up for you: there's a delay with the pre-order bonus.  Those eligible for the bonus (first 100 peeps) can PM Keranu and ask for their game to be shipped immediately with the bonus to be shipped separately when available, or they can wait and have 'em both shipped together.  You'll have to check with Keranu, but I'm assuming he's holding on to both of your pre-orders to ship everything at once.

Hi cosmos, I only see one order listed under your email address (#38) for two copies... I'm assuming Rover combined both into your first order to give an extra spot for the pre-order bonus item.

Hi Keranu, yes may be  , in fact i had asked him for the second copy ,it was not a regular pre-order ,what do you mean by "to give an extra spot for the pre-order bonus item" ? Anyway i'm glad the situation got cleared ,i'll be patient.

What I meant was that Nod combined your two orders into one to give another buyer the opportunity to be one of the first 100 orders.

The bonus items should be arriving next by week.

I talked about it on the chatroom at Paul's site but not here, I guess... the first set of discs I sent to Keranu's place never made it. They were returned and took forever to get back. When I went to pick them up, the box was smashed... about 20 of the discs got fucked in shipping and have to be redone. Fortunately, I had already ordered some new discs for another project of mine, so I have some replacements on the way already, but geez... even this is turning into a fiasco.

No... I didn't want to send the second set until I knew what was going on with the first set. As soon as the replacements arrive, I'll finish the batch and send them all via UPS.

From now on, all orders are going to be handled by me personally, which includes the first 100. Keranu is going to ship me most of the remaining stock of discs as well as the bonus materials. I shipped four orders earlier today and still have six current orders in the queue, plus sirhcman's disc. Local pickup from Crete will still be available to anyone who lives nearby though, as Keranu will retain a couple of boxes for conventions and such. I received confirmation that the replacement discs have arrived at the distribution center in San Juan, so we should have them tomorrow. It will take about 2 days to get the replacements ready, since the next few days are pretty busy here. But by the end of the week, the first batch of the preorders should start to go out.

Yes, actually. I have it completely mapped out, on 16 pages of graph paper. EVERY single square.

Still eagerly awaiting mine, but happy to wait.

Don't be upset if I don't do an actual review in PC Engine Gamer, although I will do a thing on the game. I'm too linked to the PCE Homebrew stuff to be impartial so I'd rather just promote it in a feature without major scoring bias. I'll be doing the same with all PCE homebrew releases, not just MSR.

Nah, it'll be this week. Keranu shipped the discs last week, and the USPS website says it's Cataño's distribution center, which means it'll arrive tomorrow. However, the rest of it was shipped today, but it should be here by Thursday. I'll have the first batch of orders sent out Friday at the soonest... will try to get as many done as possible this week. :) If you confirm your address with me via PM, I'll mark your order as "high priority" and make sure you're part of the first wave of shipments.

We are releasing 50 additional copies of the bonus DVD as independent sales on eBay. There are several reasons for this:

-Lots of people have been asking for it to become available like this
-Seeing it for sale like this on eBay will have the same anti-gouging effect as with the initial game release
-All sales will benefit the American Red Cross

Another 50 are available from our website directly, but we can only ship to US locations there... all international sales have to be through the eBay listing.

So have the first 100 orders all officially shipped yet?  Truth be told I'm only interested in one in particular.

Not all have been shipped yet... ran into a snag... out of packing materials again. More on the way. Shipping will resume in a few days. I have just two more orders to send right now, but of course, the post office is closed tomorrow so even that will wait till Friday. Slowly but surely, however, they're all being sent out. Which one in particular are you interested in?

No worries I was just curious.  I get nervous about my packages being in post office limbo.  I believe the order that I cared the most about was #57, but I can wait another week or two before the real crying begins.

Christmas miracle my game has been received.

I'll admit up to this point I thought the whole thing was fake.  The screenshots, the packaging, the website, the thread, etc.

I thought all of it was an elaborate scheme, involving dozens of people, with the goal to swindle me and a few others out of $40.

I am proud to admit that I was wrong.  The game does in fact exist and will shortly enter my Duo.

Once again just wanted to thank you guys for the hard work.

Excited.

Looks like about 30 orders still have to be shipped from the first 100, and I have a queue of about 15 that are from after it. 13 more were packed last night; unfortunately, we didn't get to make the drop this morning so they will be sent on Monday. Many of the remaining first 100 are international orders and we're now in Xmas season so some of the international orders may not show up until early 2013, but everyone's will be sent before that.

All of the confirmed international orders have already been shipped, with just a couple of exceptions. Some may take additional time to arrive. There have been a few that have taken a month, and one that took two months for who-knows-what reason.

And I have not been around lately due to IRL personal reasons, in addition to competing in a fierce game design competition.

My brother in law lives in China, & the latest scam there is for people to sell rubber eggs!  One guy was boiling an egg, & it wouldn't boil.  He called the police about it, they didn't believe him, so he threw it against a wall & it bounced!  I guess the only way to tell if they are fake, is to crack the shell & see if there's a membrane there.  Apparently it's cheaper to make fake eggs rather then having chickens to make real ones?

Ok, back on topic, Mysterious Song!! :D

Wow.  I don't see how a fake rubber egg is cheaper to make than a real one, but I guess the numbers work out.  I mean, you can feed a chicken nothing but kitchen scraps and still get an egg a day.

Yeah, the only thing we can figure is that maybe the space to house alot of chickens isn't really available in comparison to just making homemade fake eggs in your apartment...I don't know, either way, it's quite strange, but fairly amusing.

That story sounds like %100 total fucking bullshit.

I mean, maybe if you for some reason had some fake movie prop eggs laying around already or something, then you might sell them to some guy, but...chicken eggs are NOT expensive or time consuming to make.

I don't know, my brother in law has run into alot of strange stuff in China, especially the scams, & he's never been the type to make stuff up.  I believe it was in the news in his area, though I'd have to ask him next time we talk to him to be sure.

TIME ARTICLE:

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/11/06/how-to-make-a-rotten-egg/

Seems plausible to me:

consider Chickens require and feed, room and any feed are both a premium in a place like China.  According to this article it's about half the cost of producing real eggs.

OK... I've been finding out that a large number of the orders we recently sent out, within the last couple of months, have not been reaching their destinations. One or two occasionally being a bit late is fine, but we're talking roughly a dozen or so orders are simply not arriving, even domestic orders. Anyone who has not gotten theirs, please let me know so I can send a replacement. We are going to ship through Camuy again rather than Arecibo, since the problem happened when shipping through Arecibo.

This message will also be posted on our Facebook page.

Shit, even after the thing's been closed off, and all the orders were sent out, we're still cursed by this goddamn project. And what's more is that I took inventory of all the replacements we need to do, and we're a little short on replacement DVD cases, so I have to order more now... won't take long to replace but it's just another damn brick in the wall. I wonder if big manufacturers have these kinds of problems. On the plus side, we've got plenty of discs, and Keranu had plenty of extra inserts printed.

Hi. Yes, everyone will get their order. Please bear with me. A lot of real-life shit is going on right now for me that I wouldn't wish upon anyone, not even my worst enemies. I *will* get this done with because I'm just as sick of this situation as you all are of waiting.

What is annoying is that when we read you we think all orders are shipped ,that's what i thought ,so please tell us individually.I'm ready to pay shipping again since my first order was lost in the mail. And even OK to share the loss if you couldn't get back my lost order.

No, there's no need for anyone to pay shipping a second time, and if anyone does end up getting their first shipment, they're free to keep it. We're not in this for the money. Things aren't likely to get better anytime soon but at least we can finish this and have it out of the way.

Hey Rover

Still nothing.  Can i ask what method you used to post them, USPS global priority mail takes 7 days, airmail 2 weeks, anything else, god knows, did you ship it using the cheapest snail mail sea cargo or something?

I strapped everything to the back of a dead turtle, kicked it in the butt, and hoped for the best. :)

In all seriousness... things in and out of PR have been agonizingly slow since Xmas with no apparent reason. Everything is shipped First Class. Maybe they just don't give a snot when things are shipped that way. I dunno. But once it leaves my hands, there's not a dang thing I can do about it.

Best response ever!

I know this whole process has been torture for you and you just want to get it behind you and I really feel for the guys who were first in line to support you and have been last in line to receive their payback.  Hopefully everyone will get their game shortly and enjoy the hell out of it.

Once my motivations swing back to making gameplay videos, I'm sure MSR will be one of the next ones I do. :)

global priority envelopes cost about 25$ now.  Might as well ship priority flat-rate boxes at that point.

Post by: cosmos99 on 05/26/2013, 02:13 AM
I played a bit the game yesterday and Wow! I've been really impressed , what a work you did ! It's even better than i thought ,the game is beautiful. The intro is short but very well drawn , i also love battle backgounds , cutes characters , nice villages and the map too. Battles are short wich is a good thing but you need some levelling before the bosses , although i actually met only two bosses.Music is good although metal on some area is strange... Anyway a must have for the PC Engine that can rank in the upper average. :)

The bad points:

-french traduction is uncomplete but not too annoying.

-audio tracks seem sometimes too short so they oftenly loop.

-NPC are too static ,they don't even turn your direction when you talk to them, they are like statues.

-The game is missing of sound effects.

-Sometimes loadings are very long when most time they are very quick , i can't explain why , is it my Duo ? I will try with my Duo-R.

-The two bosses i encountered are too small , i wished i had seen some huge half screen beasts.

The good points:

-Very good to splendid graphics.

-Some audio tracks are pleasant.

-Nice packaging.

-french and spanish translations.

I noticed two game modes in the beginning , but i actually don't know what they mean.

Good!  :) You know , since i choose french language , i didn't know the meaning of the options , it was unclear , i will look the meaning in english. But if it's even better that's great.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song is now released
Post by: cosmos99 on 05/26/2013, 03:07 PM
I've checked again , in english this time but ,i'm still wondering what this all about. The two modes "original" and "balanced" , what does this mean ? The words were well translated to french though.

Is it related to the standard quest you were talking about ? I guess not , i suppose you have to complete the game first. Please tell me the meaning of the two modes at the beginning. Thanks.

I will play the game on the DUO-R and see if those long loadings appear again or not.

Quote from: cosmos99 on 05/26/2013, 03:07 PMI've checked again , in english this time but ,i'm still wondering what this all about.

Original has the tough gameplay of the original PC version. Balanced is more balanced and should require less grinding(?). Both are the same game and are more or less different difficulties.

The occasional long load time is just the CD-ROM getting lost, which is normal for all CD games and is just something PCE hardware does. Because the game loads every time you enter and exit a battle (in order to provide background graphics), there are many more loads than most CD games and you will encounter a lost search more often time-wise, but not in frequency. A six stage action game on CD might only load 8 times during a play through, but 8 loads equals 4 battles in Mysterious Song. If your CD-ROM does get lost, you can just open and close the CD door to restart it.

A lot of PCE CD RPGs? This happens with both Sega-CD and PCE games in general, as it was the first generation of console CD technology. Many PCE RPGs don't use background art in order to avoid loading every fight.

IIRC, Cosmic Fantasy 2 just overlaid the monsters and battle menu on top of the field and dungeon graphics, instead of using a Background.
I think some of the boss battles had a solid black background, tho...

I like the Battle Back Grounds in Mysterious song, and feel that the loading time is worth it, in that game.
Usually it loads pretty fast, but like ya'll said, every so often it can take a while.

Post by: cosmos99 on 05/26/2013, 05:23 PM
Yes you're right Cosmic 2 has no battle background although monsters have better graphics.

Second day on the game , i've now seen one more "video" and i found it beautiful ,very good job !  :)

Well i tried the game on my DUO-R and the long loadings came more often so i suppose it is more related with laser unit condition , greasing and lens condition may be.

French translation is good , villages are really nice. Finally there are very few points i "dislike" , for the next RPG please bring life to all those NPC and i would point too the music balance , sometimes too loud , more sound effects would be appreciated too , other than that ,great game ,bravo !  =D>

Quote from: cosmos99 on 05/26/2013, 02:13 AMI played a bit the game yesterday and Wow!

I believe we ran out of memory for the French translation, it's a shame, but I'm glad it's still playable in French.  For the music, I supposed I could've doubled up the songs so they could last longer, though, that'd take some extra work since I didn't have access to the original songs.

NPC's, yes, they just sit there, & that's always been a bummer for me.  IIRC, there was something in the coding that would've had to been completely redone to have them move around.  So we came up with the idea for them to stand there, but be animated(blinking, waving, sneezing, etc.).  I can't recall if Keranu finished all the frames or not, but, I believe that was also constrained by memory, so wasn't doable. :(

In hindsite, I believe Keranu wishes he had redrawn a lot of the sprites, though, I can't speak for him.  I just seem to recall him saying something along the lines of wanting to go back & redo them all, but, the game had been pushed back & pushed back sooooo many times.

Just take my remarks as advices for the future not as critics ,but i think you have understand. :)

French translation is really good , it doesn't really matter if it's uncomplete , any RPG fan knows english.

Another point ,again , i never played the original game ,but where are the treasure chests in dungeons ? It's fun to search for treasure chests.

All in all , for a first game it's awesome , i want to complete the game , it's a good sign. :)

There are many chests to find in dungeons and often a detour which doesn't lead to the boss or exit at least rewards you with chests. Most are common items, but some contain nice gear.

Never. Mysterious Song was originally designed to be a trilogy, but the original designer only ever produced Chapter I. I designed Chapter X and added it to this release. That's as far as Mysterious Song will ever go.

So... Rover, this is blunt, but I've got a few things stuck in my craw:

*Why was mailing after mailing thrown down a black hole without ever paying 80¢ tracking to figure out what was going on or reassure the customers?

*After mailings continued to disappear for, like, a year, why wasn't a big box sent to Keranu or someone in the continental U.S. where mail can be sent internationally without vanishing into the Bermuda Triangle?

*Why the sudden bargain-bin purging of all remaining MS stock on the forums, with no advance notice, no email to prior customers, and no announcement on the Frozen Utopia webpage?

*Why did the ebay listing show some guy's hand getting fingerprints all over the disc? Why not clear pictures of the nice artwork and pristine games in boxes?

*Why the stubborn, preemptive vow to never do a reprint? Reprints are cheap, the game was barely advertised on its release, English-speaking Turbo gamers are starved for RPG's, and ITS A GOOD GAME. There's going to be a continuous trickle of demand for more copies. Are you allergic to money?

*Why were all of the games advertised on FU and the back of the MS manual (Dragon Arm, Valkyrie Midnight, Jungle Brothers, Xymati, Project Monolith, Neutopia III, etc., etc., etc.) abandoned for yet another game (Lucretia) and a whole new company (Eponasoft)?

*Why repeat the same mistakes on Lucretia, open preorders, and announce pie-in-the-sky release dates when there's still a crap-ton of work left to do on that game?

*Why don't you advertise either Eponasoft or FU in your signature instead of a how-to site full of dead links?

Vestcunt, please stop sugar-coating your comments and lobbing softballs.

Seriously  :pcgs:

I'm going to avoid 99.99% of the issues you raised, but I will say this: I don't care what projects nodtveidt commits to, nor do I care if said projects are cancelled/delayed/etc. As long as he is contributing, in some way, to PCE goodness, then I feel it is his prerogative to choose what he wants to do. This is the only way to move forward: go with your heart. (Trite, yet true.)

That said, I agree that prematurely opening pre-orders is a mistake. He is entering into a contract, guaranteeing a deliverable. THIS IS THE SOURCE OF ALL PAIN. IT MUST BE AVOIDED. Fundraising via pre-orders might sound good in theory, but it is a bitter fruit that stains our hands and TurboPads.

TRUTH: Rover deserves our support, financial and otherwise, for all the time & energy he pours into PCE development. The current model, where the development team makes all the sacrifices and takes all the risks, is flawed: it creates stress, frustration and pain—three things that can grind any project to a halt.

GENUINE SUPPORT: If folks want to support PCE development by donating money/resources to Rover (with the understanding that it is a donation to help him pay his bills, NOT a guarantee/contract to deliver a finished product)...well, I think that would be kool.

Sadly, I don't think many folks would "donate" without expecting something in return, so I freely admit that I don't have a solution to the conundrum.

RESPECT: vestcunt, you know I respect you...and you raised valid points. I would never stop you from questioning the decisions made. That said, I want Rover to know that we, collectively, recognize the harsh realities of PCE development. Simply pressing and distributing a CD-ROM is a hellish amount of work, let alone the initial creation of assets/coding/testing/bug fixing/optimizing/flan eating.

I would say that development of a game with that level of detail, even on platforms like PC, isn't for the faint of heart. Rover should get support from all of us :D (unless he does a sequel to Gunboat or something of that caliber :P)

That said, I would like to know if you have a donation link/account anywhere. Wouldn't mind to donate some money to someone who's doing such an amazing work (I don't buy the games because I don't have my obey compliant machine anymore).

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why was mailing after mailing thrown down a black hole without ever paying 80¢ tracking to figure out what was going on or reassure the customers?
Ever since the USPS allowed doing it online through Paypal, not a single order has gone missing. Tracking has been done for quite awhile now, and every order shipped with tracking has indeed arrived. Any reports of shipments not arriving were from the previous shipments that were done by hand and not tracked. Emails *have* been sent to many customers, explaining the situation, and news was written about it on forums as well as on the page.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*After mailings continued to disappear for, like, a year, why wasn't a big box sent to Keranu or someone in the continental U.S. where mail can be sent internationally without vanishing into the Bermuda Triangle?
Keranu was originally doing the mailings, and he did a great job. It was not until international mailings from here in PR started that things started going missing. When the mailings shifted over to us, Keranu was very busy at the time and I wanted to take the workload off of him. Maybe this mess could have been avoided by having him continue to do the mailings, but what's done is done.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why the sudden bargain-bin purging of all remaining MS stock on the forums, with no advance notice, no email to prior customers, and no announcement on the Frozen Utopia webpage?
Why not? Why not give some people a chance to snag the game a bit cheaper, people who could not swing the $40? Not everyone is made of money, and they simply were not moving any longer at $40. They sold like wildfire at $15, and now more people can enjoy the game. It's about getting it in the hands of more people.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why did the ebay listing show some guy's hand getting fingerprints all over the disc? Why not clear pictures of the nice artwork and pristine games in boxes?
I have no idea what you are referring to.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why the stubborn, preemptive vow to never do a reprint? This isn't about money, it's about OBEY. I also don't feel like disturbing MSR's grave... the game is finished, out the door, done with, gone. There is absolutely no need to go through the expense of a second pressing, especially since the game has already been ripped and put up online for free. Doing a second run would just give the impression that we want to ride the coattails of a single project for as long as possible without ever doing anything new.

If there was a huge, overwhelming demand for a reprint, I would consider it. But without such a demand, there's simply no point in going through the process yet again. I would rather use my time to work on something new.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why were all of the games advertised on FU and the back of the MS manual (Dragon Arm, Valkyrie Midnight, Jungle Brothers, Xymati, Project Monolith, Neutopia III, etc., etc., etc.) abandoned for yet another game (Lucretia) and a whole new company (Eponasoft)?
They weren't. Eponasoft was formed in 2007 as a PC and Nintendo DS development group. Once it seemed obvious that the Nintendo DS aspect was going to go nowhere, it shifted focus to the PC Engine as well. Eponasoft functions as a multiplatform, team-per-production group, whereas Frozen Utopia functions as a PC Engine-exclusive core-team development group. Different development strategies, but same overall goal... make new games.

To answer the specifics about each of the games you mention:

Dragon Arm is still in the conceptual stage. The character artist is still developing sketches and fleshing out the character designs.

Valkyrie Midnight was put on hold when Seldane left. It has never been put back on the burner and won't until some other projects are taken care of first.

Jungle Bros is lord cack's project and is currently suffering the game designer's version of writer's block. Paranoia Dragon is still making its music, however.

The PC Engine version of Xymati is a collaboration between MindRec and Eponasoft. It has not been abandoned, but the level of technical expertise required to complete it was above and beyond my current abilities at the time. It is still in the works. Working on Lucretia has given me the necessary level of skill to complete Xymati.

Monolith is currently lacking artists and will resume as soon as this void is filled.

Neutopia III was canceled due to trademark issues.

There are other projects which are not even known to the general public, and they remain under wraps on purpose. Equuskia has two projects of her own under the Eponasoft label, I have a solo project under the Eponasoft label, and there are four other projects with various people... one under the Frozen Utopia banner and three under Eponasoft. There are also projects which really were abandoned for various reasons that are either not known about or were forgotten about.

frozenutopia.com/eternal-0003.png
Mysterious Song II: Eternal Silence

Why so many projects? Two reasons. One, I can't stand to be doing nothing. If a project reaches a standstill, I can't pause working until it resumes; I need to keep busy, so I work on something else until it resumes. Two, having a variety of things to do prevents burnout, which is a huge problem for people like me when we focus too long on one thing.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why repeat the same mistakes on Lucretia, open preorders, and announce pie-in-the-sky release dates when there's still a crap-ton of work left to do on that game?
This was not my decision, unfortunately. I would not have done it so early, even though we were right on schedule. I am not the one who runs Eponasoft, I'm simply the project manager/coder. It was a fuckup, a bad move, a mistake. And now I am the one who has to deal with the fallout.

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 01:40 AM*Why don't you advertise either Eponasoft or FU in your signature instead of a how-to site full of dead links?
My signature is my preference, not anyone else's. Why does your signature say "Topic Adjourned." rather than containing a link to VestCunt.com?

Responding in a snarky, condescending manner would be a total dick move and I try not to be a dick. All of this has been a huge learning experience for everyone involved, and there have been pains and stumbling blocks along the way. Nothing is ever learned by being an ass except "hey, that dude was an ass".

If there ever was demand for an MSR reprint, I would at least fix a few things in it. For one, I am going over the map designs right now and I am noticing a number of tile errors, especially on the Illus map. Map 25 in Ziemja's Canticle has an incorrect segment that prevents it from being completed, so I would also fix that. The bonus minigame has a couple of flaws in it as well that would need to be corrected. That's about as much as can be fixed in it without committing to a huge restoration effort. One of the gripes about the game so far is that the enemy designs are lacking and limited in number. Also, of course, the game is too short. Instead of trying to fix those design flaws though, I would rather do them correctly in the sequel.

Really? This is news to me, why has it not been mentioned on the Monolith dev forums? I might have jumped in at the time quite prepared to do some spriting work.

Personally, I slowed down my work on the background tiles partly awaiting clarification on several level sets, but mostly because the development seemed to grind to a halt with a lack of any updates on how the game was progressing. Then you seemed to move on to other things so I assumed that the whole project was either on hold or cancelled because there was nothing posted on the dev forums about the current status.

There was certianly enough art to build a lot of the game, allowing for some temporary elements to be upgraded later. Basic placeholder sprites can be easily generated and maps can be adjusted later when more art is complete. I don't understand how this can cause the sudden halt to production?

Quote from: guest on 10/20/2013, 12:32 PMReally? This is news to me, why has it not been mentioned on the Monolith dev forums? I might have jumped in at the time quite prepared to do some spriting work.
I had hired someone to fill in for Keranu while he was away. And I do mean "hired"... as in, paid money to... he did a few sprites and then disappeared. Nando was doing the cutscenes but then got busy with other things.

I'm not big on giving regular updates; that's why I tend to just list out the work to be done and let everyone work at their own pace. There seems to be less stress on a project that way.

There is plenty done so far using what resources it has already. There's just not a whole lot more I can do right now without new sprites. I do not like to use placeholder resources because it is an inefficient way to spend development time, especially considering things like frame count or even size can change, so things sometimes have to be done more than once. I prefer to work with finalized resources. If something is stalled because of that, then that's okay... the project will resume when it can. It's not a huge deal. :)

With the multitude of free artists who are enthusiastic about PCE, why would you even consider paying someone?  Seems like a waste of money, and a great way to get an inconsistent art style with the game.

You've got plenty of Lucretia update videos on YouTube.   Probably more of those than the rest of your projects combined.

It would appear that not giving your team regular updates on projects they're invested in leads them to believe you have bailed for something else that you're starting/posting about.

That might seem less stressful because no one is communicating, but is probably more of a problem in the long run.

I disagree with this.   You should have set guidelines for art sizes and frame counts so you can plan ahead and get away with placeholders.

and if you're using something as simple as a #define, you can relocate things in VRAM with about 5 seconds of work.

same goes for frame counts.

Thanks for all of the answers Rover. You explained most of my gripes away and the others don't weigh on me now that I've voiced them. My apologies for the dick tone. I'll continue to support whatever you do.

It was a waste of money and I hope the jackass never returns, honestly. I really like Keranu's style, and of course, that was the first thing this dope insulted before he gave me pixels that don't hold a candle to Keranu's sprite work.

Only because its development moved the fastest. I've never put together a game as quickly as Lucretia. But take note that no new videos have been posted lately.

I like to give a lot of artistic freedom to the artists. That's why they're artists and not just pixel-making machines.  So sometimes, things change around. We reorganized Lucretia's entire level 1 VRAM map four times before we finalized it because we had new things to add. It eventually settled, but it took a lot of reworking to get right. While some might argue that this is "bad design", I disagree strongly... it's dynamic design, and makes things more loose and free.

This.

For the sake of smooth operation on future projects, don't be afraid to over-update everyone on progress. I usually chat or email Arkhan on a daily basis regarding our games and it really helps to be in the loop. I have had too many bad experiences when I spent months drawing art and the programmer just gave up and moved on to something else that if I even see a hint of that, I'm gonna seriously reconsider my options.
