Well I'm back at it, this time spending a bit too much on a few RPGs. That means it's time to open up a Christmas bizarre! Uh, I mean bazaar. Some games will be added as I try to beat them or determine if they're worth beating. If I am doing this too much  ](*,) it might not be worth the effort!

Shipping is free in USA. An international bundle is a flat $12.00 shipping fee, so it's best to buy in bulk if you want to get your mone Ys worth (hopefully). Am open to deals.

Loose HuCards:

Doing a little cleaning out of games I got my fill of. Expect a few more over the weekend as I wrestle with whether or not certain games "click" with me or not (never was sure about I liked Gomola Speed or not, hmmm).

EDIT: It turns out I did like Gomola Speed and quite respectably, too! Just after beating it a few times I felt like I had had "enough" of the game. I'll carry fond memories of it, for sure, ha ha!

Can't remember exactly how much I paid him for it, but I think I am offering the same price, to keep the game in good PCE-loving hands.

I'm sad to see these (potentially) go, but I gotta do some spring cleaning; no more room on my shelves - and no more money to buy new games~!  :D If you think differently about some of my prices, we might be able to work something out. I'm also open to bundle pricing.

This thread will likely be updated as I force myself to finish some more PCE-CD shooters.  :P

I was wondering if anyone ever had this trouble with the Hori Fighting Commander PC for the PC Engine:

Image Here

The buttons and d-pad works fine, as does the turbo switches for rapid-fire. However, when I try to set the controller to one of the two 6B configurations, the game freaks out. The game activates the turbo switch on EVERY button, and moving a character sometimes doesn't work as it seems as if every input for the d-pad is being pressed rapidly.

You might notice in my picture above the broken turbo switch for button IV. I've secured it in place, so I don't think that should affect the configuration of 3 button or 6 button mode.

Does anyone have one of these pads and can offer advice? I would really appreciate it!

I'd like to move to HuCard only for my collection. And well, this is my only Turbo Chip!

The card is in good condition and I have no problems with play.

Not really sure on the current going prices, but I will sell it for what I paid, which is $27.00

EDIT: SOLD!

To my dismay, my Magicoal CD refuses to load a gameplay chapter late into the game (more than 2/3 into it!). The laser struggles to read and eventually gives up. The game up to that point loads fine. There are numerous light scratches on the underside of the disc.

I eventually burned the game onto a blank CD and played through the chapter. Out of curiosity I tried the original CD for the next gameplay portion, and it was able to load just fine! It's just for that one segment of gameplay that the CD refuses to load.

It's disappointing that, as far as I can tell the disc is screwed on one part of a long game. I haven't tested the disc on Ootake to see if it's a system-issue.

On one hand, I am curious to here how anyone here deals most effectively with scratched CDs. My only experience in going to a place that cleans CDs is a retro shop in my hometown of Chicago - to say nothing of resurfacing discs, I don't know if the machine does it. It didn't solve my previous problems with other game systems' scratched discs so I am disinclined to use it. I tried the toothpaste trick once, and destroyed a game disc (good thing it was an ultra-common MGS1 disc). Do you have your methods? Or do you chalk it up as a loss?

On the other hand, while I bought the game from a japanese ebay seller, I tremendously doubt I can send it back (bought it months ago), let alone in good conscience sell the game with this problem. Unless it's for $5 with a blank(cough) CD packed in with it.

Anyone bored with their (presumably complimentary) translated Xak III disc? Want to earn some morning-break coffee money?

I'd be willing to take it off your hands for a few bucks: $5.00 for shipping + that coffee money (just a coffee, no fruity espresso latte drinks  [-X ). Consider it a donation to your magnificent and beneficent generosity.

OR:

If you are looking for a trade, I could part with one of these very nice Turbob Xpress mintings:

It's a shooter that is not talked about too much on this forum - a search results in less than 80 posts mentioning it, and most of those posts talking about wanting to buy it, or its good graphics. (Perhaps there is a reason for this.)

I thought I would open up a topic of conversation to hear about people actually playing it, and what their opinions of the game are. I've only played it in Ootake, but I've thought about purchasing it... sometimes. It's towards the middle-bottom of my wish list.

There are certainly aspects worth praising, like the aforementioned graphical effects, as well as its soundtrack. It certainly shows off a flair for spectacle beyond other mediocre mid-tier PCE devs (e.g. Right Stuff). Level design has some interesting twists and turns, and each stage feels distinct from the last. While the "turn around" gimmick is one of my least favorite and most boring in shmups, it is at least supplemented by three weapons with their own range and special attacks.

I've only played a few stages, though, and there are some seriously aggravating aspects to the game. Chief among them is how easy it is for enemies to teleport and materialize on top of you with no warning, taking away most of your health in one go. Other frustrations surface: weapons feel weak (especially since it's easy to lose power from a hit), and enemies seem to revel in cheap hits, appearing quickly out of nowhere or firing from off-screen. It makes it hard to persevere in the game when it seems like the deck is stacked against you.

I'd love to hear your thoughts: good, bad, mediocre, and whatnot.

How do I balance the concomitant excitement of unsealing a game with the crushing knowledge of the mediocrity that awaits me? Need some help from some professional game unsealers here. Serious responses only.

Anyone have a copy of Alice in Wonderdream they don't feel too attached to? Want to make a little spare change to put in that "To Buy - Rondo of Blood" jar? EDIT: I was able to find a copy, so the games have changed!  8)

I have a disc-only copy of Pop'n Magic (fun game) and a blank cd case... I'd like to spruce it up a bit!

Searching on the forums here for this particular topic is a little sketchy because of the common search terms, so I was wondering if anyone has a helpful guide or resource to printing your own inserts? Preferably an accurate-sized resource of PC Engine scans?

I know that Sparky made nice-looking inserts once upon a time (I'm not sure if he still does though). I was just going to use some photo paper and my home printer and hope for the best.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I've been playing this game to decide whether or not I'd like to buy it. I somewhat enjoyed the two hours I spent with the game revved up in Ootake, but I thought I'd ask some questions to get a better handle on progressing through the game.

1) Is there any consequence for attacking NPCs other than that they all rush you and magically gain stats higher than the overworld monsters?

I ask this because the game seems to want you to grind, and at the start of the game monsters give 1 or 2 EXP. Killing the soldiers in the town, however, yields 20ish EXP. Why not? Unless there is some negative consequence (shops not selling you or killing important NPCs). I don't suspect a game this old to have that feature, but I thought I'd ask.

2) Am I stuck playing as one character the whole game? Or is it possible to switch between the two at some point?

3) Thus far I have only found items (little grass leaves?) that replenish magic. Leveling up or going to the HP-restoring house in town does not restore MP either. Are there places that sell or restore MP, or should I play more conservatively?

So far, perhaps thanks to my lack of language knowledge, my estimation of the game isn't as high as the pages of praise the Brothers Duo lavish on the game, but it's not bad (the short range of your slash though, is less enjoyable).

So I know this is a fairly common problem with PC-Engine Duos in general, but I thought I would like to hear from some more knowledgeable forum-goers as to potential solutions.

I bought my PC-Engine Duo-R from Doujindance on ebay, as this was generally stated around the internet to be the best person to buy to sort of casually jump into the PC-Engine library with the least fuss - replaced laser lens, region-free mod, RGB (I only have a Wega Trinitron CRT so I can't use the RGB though). Plus, with it being a Duo-R, it was supposed to bypass the common capacitor issues the Duos regularly face (if browsing this forum is any indication).

My Duo-R woes are entirely CD-related:

1) a few games have had occasional lockups and freezes at the startup screen ("Please Set Disc!")

2) this is more random than not (in terms of what games it effects), but redbook audio will occasionally start stuttering, popping, or crackling, often cutting out entirely, leaving only the chip sound effects. I originally thought this problem was localized to my Valis III disc, which is a little scuffed (nothing terrible), but it has happened on my better-kept CDs as well.

As a note, I soft-reset the system before removing the disc, and I do not leave the system plugged in. I use a PS2 slim AC adaptor. Usually, but not always, leaving the system off for a while and coming back to it allows it to play audio without issues, but they seem to creep back as the system is used more and more. Also, chiptune sounds are not affected.

Now, since i bought the Duo-R primarily for CD games, #2 is a big bummer.

Lurking through the forums usual suspects tend to be laser calibration or capacitors, though most of these topics are for Duos, and not Duo-Rs.

If anyone has experience with doujindance Duo-Rs, I would be very happy to hear some suggestions.

I have considered using a repair service, turbografxfan on ebay, to give the machine a once-over in case it needed a capacitor replacement. If there is a comparable service offered by a member of this forum, I would be happy to hear it. If it is something I can do myself, so much the better. I have seen the numerous stickies in this subforum, but I would like to be sure of something before committing to ripping open my console.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Hello everyone.

Word around the web christened this place -the- NEC site to check out. A week ago or so I purchased myself a PCE Duo-R from doujindance, interested in exploring the PC-Engine library. Truth be told, i am far more interested in the CD library than I am in the HuCard library, though I have a few that particularly interested me (Genpei Toumaden Kannoni, Dragon Saber, Ninja Spirit).

I wanted a wide range of titles for the CD, so I have the usual suspects (Valis, Valis III, Exile, Ys1&2), some shmups (Super Darius, Gate of Thunder), and I am dipping my toes into Japanese RPGs to see if there is something to be enjoyed there despite not knowing the language (Xanadu 1, Xak1&2, Auleria). Of that last bit Xak has proven to be a surprisingly fun game, despite its slightly wonky computer origins (come to think of it a lot of the games I listed above were originally from PC).

So I hope to chime in here and there, perhaps argue over whether a game sucks or not, and ask a few technical/repair questions about the Duo-R (since it seems to have some redbook audio issues intermittently - music cutting out).

I'm happy to join and look forward to browsing, lurking, and posting!
