Off-Topic / Sega power strip story...
12/27/2015, 10:04 AM
Quote from: esteban on 12/27/2015, 12:22 AMI have never heard of this item.

Apparently the Holy Grail of power strips.

Please tell me it doesn't look like a totally generic power strip.
It's actually kind of awesome:

Even today it is rare to find a strip with such a low profile yet still able to take 6 large AC adapters. The SEGA letters are just a bonus.

Thanks for sharing the story, ifkz.

I am not very good at this game at all. I find the ball to be a very tough object to bounce from, since it has such a small amount of available surface area compared to the usual Breakout plank. That said, I do like the different object arrangements for each level since there are different strategies you need to use. The different bounce types (up or sideways) adds a layer of complexity to the Breakout formula but again it's just really tough to direct the ball accurately and more importantly just bounce the ball.

The story is hilarious though, how each round is influenced by the stuff she is dreaming about. Food, money and religion are the first three stages - please tell me sex is a later stage! Is anyone actually able to read the little text blurb between rounds? It's incredibly quick!

I hope to play this one more a little later to see if I can establish some kind of groove. Thanks for the pick, Mr. Swimbz.

Quote from: guest on 10/16/2015, 11:17 PMI still have at least one TurboChip with "Superior Video" written on the back.
We had a Superior Video way up in Northern Canada where I grew up and they carried TG-16 games. I never really saw any rented out, but they stocked them close to launch and had most of the early library. Up to that point they only carried NES games and must have really bought in big with NEC. After a couple years they liquidated all their games and I picked up the majority of them for $5 a pop. It was my gateway into the system, since I never had a TG back when they were renting the games. I ended up getting World Court Tennis, Deep Blue, Boxy Boy, Fantasy Zone, Ordyne, Davis Cup Tennis and Parasol Stars all from them. Here's a picture of the Superior Video sticker:

Finished NEUTOPIA yesterday. It was an enjoyable game and a fun quest, if a bit derivative, short and simplistic compared to THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, GOLVELLIUS and GOLDEN AXE WARRIOR.  The graphics were beautiful though, and the music catchy.  I liked how different worlds were all rooted from the save hub, making backtracking, which is usually a major gripe in these kinds of games, a virtual non-factor.  Cute game though, and it begs repeating that Hudson really knows how to put the polish on their games when it comes to visuals and control.

My one gameplay gripe with this game: The boss on the 7th labyrinth.  The fact that there's no way to kill him once 1/3 of your hit points are gone (and your fire power becomes too weak to reach him) is incredibly frustrating.  That's bad game design to force a player to die with the majority of their life still left over.  The boss isn't THAT difficult, but it's still the principle of the matter - even with two vitality potions, you're only able to beat the boss with effectively 2/3rds of a life bar when every boss prior has allowed you two full bars.

No matter, though.  Had a lot of fun with this and now the next question is...how can I find Neutopia II at a reasonable price?

Quote from: grolt on 09/15/2015, 11:25 AMFired up some Air Zonk last night.  Pretty fun game that managed to make the leap from platformer to shooter pretty admirably while still retaining the charm and upgrade mechanics of the Bonk games.  All the characters tend to be a little too big which simplifies the gameplay a little too much, but it is a fun feeling when you go all giant and just decimate bosses.  Having different "friends" come along with you is a nice touch that adds a kind of marquee cast to the game so it's not just the B/Zonk show.  I love how quick the opening cut scene is at explaining the Bonk to Zonk transition - dude got sunglasses BOOM he's flying and shit.
I concur on most points.

Best thing you mentioned = cinema scene.

Origin of Zonk: Sunglasses

I know it would never have happened, but I wish the origin of Zonk was SUNGLASSES + CIGARETTES = ZONK

No guns in the B/Zonk series, just transvestites.

Hey guys, I bought Blazing Lazers the other week and the card inside looks like it has been smoking a pack a day since 1989. The backside of the card looks white and perfectly fine, it's just the front that looks all brown and gross. Any tips on how to clean a card like this? I'd like to get the edges looking white again but don't want to damage the card or potentially remove the artwork. Here's a NSFW pic with a perfectly fine Darkwing Duck beside for a sense of how discolored it is:

I didn't knew Duos had a power switch at the back of the console... in fact mine doesn't. Must be a special r4r3 edition, huh.
Or a Keith Courage mod switch edition. :)

I think before Ninja Spirit, no game had ever received a 10 from any of the editors.
Literally one page before this there's a 10 for Ys: Book I & II, so that wouldn't be true either.

Hey guys, I bought a system that had a controller with the male DIN attachment severed from the holster on the controller cable. Picture is below. Is there any way to find a replacement DIN attachment or some kind of solution so I can still salvage the controller for my TurboTap?

Years ago in a SEGA Saturn lot I purchased, there was a lone HuCard tucked into one of the Saturn game clamshells. Because the title is all in some weird Japanese characters, I've never been able to know what the game was. Finally playing it for the first time this morning on my Duo, I still don't know what the title is since the in-game title is all Japanese too. It's a shooter with a weird gold bullet dude. Here's a picture of the card:

What game is this?

Alright I can finally stop spamming this thread. Had a perfect run until the last level and then got really sloppy, but I had enough lives to see me through. Ended up with one ship to spare and probably carpal tunnel syndrome. Was worth it!

And I will find ceti to update the thread :D

AND EAT ANOTHER DONAIR
Made it to the boss with 4 ships and died again. It sure gets tough when you're only the single ship since all those big bugs fly at you constantly. I love the game but at this point it is such a slog to make it to the end...but I won't give up. Increased my high score marginally in the process.

Finally made it to the final boss, and with 3 lives no less, but I lost concentration and died quickly after a strong start. Oh well.

Love this game, but man can it be frustrating once you lose the triple ship in the later levels. It then becomes a slow game of attrition until you finally die a sad death. Here's my current high score:

Quote from: guest on 08/20/2015, 12:26 PMNo sir, no soldering.  Now that I think about it, though... i'd swapped PCE Pad/Turbo Pad.  You may have to use PCE Tap/Turbo Tap for the cables to work... i don't have a tap here at work to test with so hopefully someone else can chime in.  PCE Taps are super cheap if you get one that is nice and beat up. :D
padcable.webp
I opened my Tap up and it also had the same 9-pin array that's in your photo, so it looks like you should be able to swap Tap cables with controller cables [EDIT: No, you cannot just swap cables, you must change the ordering of the wires, as documented here].  That seems like the best option, thanks for the suggestion.  I'll try swapping my PC Engine controller cable with my Turbo Tap cable once I receive my Duo and report back.  Seems like doing it that way would also increase the length of the cable, since the Tap's cord length is ridiculously short.  Another question might be...is it possible to just by those kind of cables separately so you don't have to Frankenstein an old controller?

Sorry, I missed this when you first posted.  Here are the titles from levels 2 & 3.  Is it just saying "Stage 3" or do the stages actually have a unique name?

Hah, that is better, but is that not available in at least 720x480 off a DVD rip ? I could give you a rip if you want. It would be great if a full shot of the DoxPhile forum was more readable and for that we need higher resolution. I dunno if "They Live" ever came out in BluRay, if so, then one could get a 1920x1080 video to work with. But anyway, I have the DVD so it'd be no trouble to get a good mpeg2 720x480 rip of the scene if you want. What are you using to convert it to ani-GIF BTW ?
I have the Blu-ray and am able to rip it, but generally GIFs play better in a smaller resolution.  Nobody would share or even be able to load a 50 MB 1920x1080 GIF file on a website.  I have a subscription to Adobe CC - but many older versions of Photoshop can make GIFs with relative ease.

Quote from: johnnykonami on 08/06/2015, 07:18 PMI used it on Bonk's Adventure and Revenge all the time to aid with spinning.  I remember switching between the different speed settings on the fly.  My opinion was pretty much that it was included with the original controllers, so encouraged, whereas on a SNES/Genesis it was an aftermarket feature only so really more of a cheat.  I think I remember using the turbo with Dungeon Explorer, Cotton, Macross 2036 (not sure, my memory is weak but it may have been autofire) and probably some other shooters as well.
My sentiments exactly.  I think the inclusion of turbo switches on every controller is what helps make the TG-16 unique, and it's clear that developers were programming games with the switch in mind, since I've even read suggestions or strategy to use them in the manuals.  When a function like that comes with every system, it can be embraced by developers without fear of limiting the market, and can offer up new gameplay experiences, like what you see with the Bonk spin.  I think that's why you see the most shooters on the TG-16, because that controller (as did the console hardware itself) made it very friendly for rapid-fire.  Shooters are probably better on the TG-16 because the developers could design the visuals knowing there'd be bullets flying everywhere at all times and factor that into their design.

With any console, I like playing it the way the manufacturer intended with all the original hardware.  That's why I don't like using emulation.  NEC included the switches on their controllers, I think that should be embraced, not scorned.
I absolutely agree. :)

I also know that only pussies use rapid fire. :(
