[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Can Pcenginefx beat all licensed TurboGrafx-16 games in 2016/2017? (115/135)]

We tried as a forum to collectively beat every licensed U.S. game released for the TurboGrafx-16 system in 2016.  We failed.   
Now, we are simply trying to collectively beat them in 2016-2017.

Rules

  1.  Post the games which you have beaten in this thread.
  2.  Game must be beaten on any difficulty level which 'completes' the game and credits scroll (if the game does that).  (So 'Breeze' on Magical Chase won't cut it, because it is not the complete game, and no credits scroll.
  3.  A game clear screenshot must be posted for your clear to count, but if you absolutely missed getting the pic, you may substitute a picture of your gaming setup with the game playing on the screen.
  4.  Emulators may be used, but no save states/frame skips/cheats are allowed.
  5.  The PC Engine version of the game may be beaten in its place if the games are basically the same (i.e. Ninja Spirit – okay, Sinestron/Violent Soldier – not okay)
  6.  Continues and/or passwords are fine, but no codes allowed which are not given to you by the game itself or its instruction manual.
  7.  Game must be beaten in its entirety in the calendar year of 2016.  No old 99% saves may be used.
  8.  If a game has no ending and just repeats the same stages, then you may consider it beaten once you get to that point.
  9.  If a game has no ending but just continues racking up points (i.e. Alien Crush), then you may consider it beaten once you beat the in-game high score or you max out the score (i.e. all 9's in the score).
10.  Gamers may participate to beat longer games if it is feasible and desired (i.e. Boxyboy – one could beat the first 125 levels and give the password to another who could beat the final 125 levels).
11.  Games to clear may not be reserved.  Whoever beats it first and posts their pic gets the credit.
12.  If anyone feels that a game was missed or a game is unbeatable and/or should have an alternate clear condition, please post your thoughts.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Free to a good home - GunHed case only - no manual or game]

The first long-timer* who posts in this thread that they have a loose copy of GunHed which they would like to have the case for may have this 'gamers' case.  It is a little cracked, but still looks and works just fine.

If no long-timer* posts up that they want it by the end of the week, then I'll either raffle it off or give it to anyone who needs it.

Note:  This game only has one difficulty setting that I know of, although after you clear the game and the credits roll, the game does loop into a more difficult mode.  After beating the second loop and watching the credits roll, the game will continue looping the game on the more difficult mode until the player runs out of continues and lives.

[Buy/Sell/Trade / Super CDROM 2 to SuperGrafx jumper power cord]

I have recently acquired a Super CDROM 2 to go with my SuperGrafx console, but of course, the jumper power cord which comes with the Super CDROM 2 fits to a PC Engine, not to a SuperGrafx.  I see this one for sale in Hong Kong for $7.00 + $4.55 shipping, but I was wondering if anyone knew a better/cheaper place to get one?  Or maybe someone has an extra one?  If my memory serves me correctly, it seems that retrogamecave.com used to sell this a while back, but he has closed up shop for now.

Just curious.  I don't have PC-FX system, but I'd like to get one sometime down the road, and I figure that this game would be one of the ones that I'd like to have for the system.  Basically, I have an opportunity to get a copy now for around $70-75 or so, and I was curious as to whether this price is high, low, or about average.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Which games came in/with something else other than just a regular jewel case?]

I know that most all of the PC Engine games (both HuCard and CD) came simply with game, manual, jewel case, and spine card (for the CD games, but not for the HuCard games, I believe).  I would like to create a comprehensive list of all of the PC Engine games which came in (like in a magazine) and/or with (like included extra stickers) something extra.  The few that I know are as follows:

The below came in something larger than the standard jewel case.
3x3 Eyes - had a regular single CD jewel case release & one which came in a larger box with a VHS tape
Anearth Fantasy Stories (Seiya Monogatari) Taikenban - came included in Dengeki CD-ROM & BOOK Vol.3
Bakuretsu Hunter - came included in a Bakuretsu Hunter book, and you had to cut out the CD case front and back insert from the magazine
Forgotten Worlds - came in a larger box with an Avenue Pad 3 - a 3-button controller
Motteke Tamago - came included in Super PC Engine Fan Deluxe Vol. 2 magazine (This issue also included a PC-FX disk of some sort, I believe.) You had to cut out the CD case front insert from the magazine.  This game did not have an official CD case back insert issued.
Pachio Kun Maboroshi no Densetsu - had a regular CD jewel case release & one which came in a larger box with a pachinko PCE controller

The below included something extra inside the regular jewel case sealed game.

Gamecube /w Gameboy Player and 9 games for $50 - seems to be a decent deal, although I must say that I'm not much up on Gamecube pricing at all.

Easy - almost any gamer can beat this game if he just gives it some time

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / TG-16 shoot-'em-ups which are quite different from their PC Engine releases]

So, I'm creating both a list of PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 Shoot-'Em-Ups categorized by their respective sub-genres, and I want to clarify which TurboGrafx-16 shoot-'em-ups are different enough from the PC Engine release to classify them as a different game  - for example, IVANEC at The Brothers Duomazov says that Sinistron (TG-16) and Violent Soldier (PC Engine) are different enough, that he classifies them as completely different games.

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Could a Duo be modded so as to have more internal save capacity?]

As many other gamers have discovered, the save capacity of Duos is rather lacking, what with many of the later release RPGs saves taking up most (if not all) of the save capacity.

Is there any easy way that a Duo could be modified so as to increase the internal save capacity and allow more save games to be stored using the same internal memory manager?  If so, then I think that this would be a useful mod.

So, I'm at a local thrift store, and I see that they have all of their TVs on-sale today for $5.00 + tax each.  I walk up and see this Sony WEGA Trinitron KV-32FS13.  I think that I remember reading somewhere online that the Sony WEGA is a pretty good TV for 8-16 bit console gaming.  Can anyone confirm this?  The TV looks to be in pretty good shape with its instruction manual and remote control included.

So, my 2 sons and I have been playing Doraemon: Nobita's Dorabian Night off and on for the last couple of weeks, and I have to say that the music is simply fun!  I have never considered myself to be much of a music aficionado, and I find it difficult to remember tunes for specific games, but the tunes for this game are stuck in my head!   

The game itself is actually quite fun and endearing, so I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't already have it.

All of this talk about complete sets has gotten me to thinking a bit.  Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but I thought that this would be an interesting idea to discuss.

If you could take today's knowledge of the entire TG-16/PC Engine libray to the past and had been the CEO of NEC Home Electronics and T.T.I., which games would you have released INSTEAD OF the games which were released in the U.S.  And no, you can't simply just say, "I would have released the entire PC Engine library in the U.S."  For purposes of discussion, I would like to propose the following 'rules':

1.  Only licensed retail-released HuCard, CD, and Super CD games may be discussed (since the Arcade Card was never released in the U.S.).  This means no Laser Active, demo games, or unlicensed homebrew/girlie games for this topic.

2.  Only substitutions may be made.  No additions.  (For every PC Engine game ADDED to the TG-16 list, a TurboGrafx-16 game must be REMOVED from the list.)

3.  You may substitute CD/Super CD games for Hucard games, or vice versa, but your list must keep a minimum of 60 HuCard games.

4.  To keep the TG-16 release list from getting too unbalanced, participants should strive to substitute games within the same genre if possible, or at least do not remove a genre entirely.  (i.e. Don't just remove all sports titles and replace them all with RPG titles.  You must remember that you are the CEO, and so you must appeal to America/Canada as a whole and not to a small niche market.  Your goal is to beat Sega/Nintendo out and maintain a presence in the U.S. rather than closing up shop.)

5.  Since it is simply a label variant, Champions Forever Boxing (red label variant) may be substituted for by anything.

6.  For easy reading and discussion's sake, simply post similarly as follows:

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Game-ending glitch in Cadash?]

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I invited my sister over to indoctrinate her in the glories of Turbo some more, and knowing that she likes RPG games, I decided that the evening was going to be a Cadash evening.  We played, and she got right into it, with her playing the mage, and me playing the fighter.  Later we figured out that we should have switched characters, because she kept dying on a fairly regular basis as a result of the mage's lower defense.  We pressed onward through the night fighting hard and winning many glorious battle with foes beyond our imagination.  Finally, we arrived at the final town which had lost so many of its residents to the monsters, and had even had many of the residents hanged or turned into zombies by the evil one.  Finding the faithful dog waiting so patiently for his master, Abel, we pressed on to find Abel's widow.  (Here's where it gets heartbreaking.)  I march my character into the house to speak with Abel's widow about the need for Abel's pendant with which to be able to speak with his faithful canine companion.  My sister's character, being tired from the lengthy journey and many deaths/resurrections simply lingered just inside the door to the house.  After speaking with the widow, she agreed to give us the magical pendant which had been in the ceiling the entire time.  As the pendant descended to the floor, my sister's character nervously twitched and fell out of the house.  Well, my character was so concerned that he rushed outside with no regard for the pendant.  After regrouping outside, we went back into the house, only to find no pendant on the floor, and the goodwife exclaiming that she had already given it to us.  This presented us with a quandary.  We knew that some evil bandits had the magical flute which tames flames, and we had to have that flute so as to be able to cross the flames and reach the evil overlord's castle, but we couldn't find the bandits hideout.  Try as we may, the secret entrance to their cave eluded us time and time again no matter how many times that we retraced our steps.  We felt that the dog could track them down, but without the pendant, we had no way with which to communicate with him.  Also, there were no other sources of magical speak-with-animals pendants anywhere in the world to be found.  We became strong with the experience of using our battle skills again and again as we treked throughout the land speaking with anyone and everyone, searching for either the bandits, or for the lost pendant, or for another similar pendant to no avail.  The monsters quailed at the sound of our footsteps, and the resurrection priests questioned after why we longer availed ourselves of their services, but we had grown so strong, we surmised that even the mighty overlord would surrender to us without a fight if we could only find a way across the flames to challenge his might......

















What actually happened was that I spoke with Abel's widow, and right after the pendant started floating down from the ceiling, but before I could walk over to pick it up, my sister accidentally pushed right on her directional pad, which instantly took both of us outside, and when I went back in, the pendant was gone, and the widow had already changed her words over to what she says after giving away the pendant, and there was no way for me to re-trigger the event.  After trying several different things, we finally had to just kill ourselves.  I tried to do the continue trick, which I had never tried before, but I couldn't get it to work.  So we ended up with playing the game for a couple of hours or so, but without being able to beat it. 

Has anyone else ever experienced this glitch, and/or does anyone know if there is a way around this glitch?

[Localizations, Games, Apps, Docs / CD games which most need a 'press' run]

Not sure which board to pose this question on.

If someone were to 'press' 500 copies of 1-5 Turbo CD games complete in jewel cases, back insert, and 2-panel front insert and make them available to the Turbo community for basically cost+shipping, which games would be the most 'useful' to the community in pressed form?  Some of the English-patch-translated PCE games?  Some of the harder to find games?  Homebrew games which have never been released in pressed form (i.e. Meteor Blaster DX)?  etc...?  It seems as though the debate still continues for pressed CDs vs CDRs, but at least nobody dislikes pressed CDs.

I am NOT advocating selling something that a living company has current interest in 'protecting' their rights.  It's just that, for curiousity's sake, I recently got a price quote, and for 500 (minimum order) 'pressed' CDs as follows - (CD Package=CD replication from glass master with 1 to 3 color screen print, 2 panel insert (4/4) and tray card, jewel case, assembly & wrap) - for reasonable pricing, and I wonder why/if this question has come up before and if so, then what the community's consensus was on this issue?  If I'm stepping on anyone's toes by asking this question, then I apologize in advance.

Forgive me if this has already been done, but after searching through the archives, I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so here it is!  This is the PC Engine version of Damon Plus's Top TurboGrafx-16 games (as voted by users) thread.  I will update this first post periodically as votes are cast.

Since there are 300+ PC Engine HuCard games and 400+ PC Engine CD games as opposed to less than 150 total for the TG-16, I'd like to list the top 25 games of each format.  For your votes to be counted, you must list a minimum of 10 games in a single format up to a maximum of 25 games per format.  (If you can't think of 10 PC Engine games that you like in a single format, then it shows that you need to play more PCE!     )  Scoring will be as follows:  1=10 points, 2=9 points, 3-4=8 points, 5-6=7 points, 7-8=6 points, 9-10=5 points, 11-13=4 points, 14-16=3 points, 17-20=2 points, 21-25=1 point.  If someone has a better scoring system, please enlighten me.

I have basically decided that I would like to get a SuperGrafx with a Super CD Rom 2 and an Arcade Card Duo so as to be able to play EVERY SINGLE PC Engine game.  I don't have either the SuperGrafx or the Super CD Rom 2 yet, so I want to ask a few questions.


1.  Does a SuperGrafx need to be re-capped?

2.  Does a Super CD Rom 2 need to be recapped?

3.  Can the SuperGrafx be region-modded so as to allow TG-16 games to be played?

4.  What is the best video output that the SuperGrafx/Super CD Rom 2 can put out?  (If there is a better video output that the SuperGrafx attached to a regular CD Rom by way of an RAU-30 adapter can put out, then please let me know.)

5.  Can the SuperGrafx be output modded so as to allow output of both regular composite (red, white, & yellow audio/video cords) AND something better (i.e. s-video or component)?

6.  Are there any other nice mods that can be done to a SuperGrafx/Super CD Rom 2 setup that I haven't already mentioned?

7.  In a SuperGrafx/Super CD Rom 2 setup, which unit stores the save games?

8.  Is the storage memory the same as a Duo or does it have more or less save capacity?  (i.e. Can you use a Tennokoe Bank with this setup?)

Basically, what I'm thinking about doing is to have one system that can play all of my Turbo stuff, but I might as well do it up right, so I want to know what would be the top-of-the-line SuperGrafx setup that I could do.

Also, what should I expect to pay?  I see this SuperGrafx/Super CD Rom 2 setup for sale for $599.99, but it seems awfully expensive, even though it does include 2 good games.  I don't really need the box though.  What do y'all think?

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / "Zero Wing" or, "The Death of a Gamer"]

...the first two levels started like your standard shoot-'em-up, but that was just to suck the unwary into a horrific trap...  After that, it was a constant stream of deaths.  Levels 3-7 were each quite difficult, but after much blood, toil, sweat, and tears, each level was conquered and put in its place.  Cheap deaths, strange boss patterns, odd mazes, etc...  Level 8 was so bad that after 45 minutes to an hour of non-stop dying, I despaired of beating the level, so I went to the wise Oracle of knowledge - Google, and the first information that I found said that Zero Wing was only 8 levels long.  After reading that, I said, "I can do this!", and I encouraged myself enough to persevere long enough to finally beat the level 8 boss (whom I thought was the last boss).  Woe to me when level 9 started, for it was almost as if I had started an entirely new 'bullet hell' shoot-'em-up on maximum difficulty right at the very beginning of the level before I could catch my breath!  I pressed on for almost another hour, but I could never even get to the level 9 mid-boss.  Exhausted finally, I returned to the oracle, searching for *gasp!* cheat codes or anything which could give me the faintest glimmer of hope for the possibility of an end to this torture, but my hopes were completely dashed to the ground with no cheats to be found and more reviews discovered which stated that the PC Engine version has 10 levels.  My heart gave out upon reading this, and I have collapsed on my bed.  I type this warning with my last remaining strength, "Be warned!  Zero Wing is accursed!"...

[Buy/Sell/Trade / Found a TG-16 w/ Turbo Booster Plus in the wild.]

So, a semi-local used video game shop has a TG-16 system, complete with power cord, RF adapter, Turbo Tap, 1 Turbo Pad, 1 controller extension cord, and a Turbo Booster Plus!  They are asking $89.99 for it, and when I asked if they could just sell me the Turbo Booster Plus, after researching it on the internet, they said that they couldn't accept less than $40-50 for it.  I was still very tempted to get it, but my wallet's rather thin at the moment, but if they still have it the next time I get over this way, I may try to go ahead and get it.

If anyone thinks that this is a bargain, then let me know, or if someone in the Northwest Indiana area is interested in checking this shop out, let me know.  They did also have a CIB Jack Nicholas Golf for $6.99, about 6-7 CIC games, about 5 loosies, and a Turbo Pad (for $7.99) as well.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Duo save capacity comparisons and/or alternatives requested]

I've only recently gotten a PC Engine Duo, and I've already run into save problems.  I've been playing several different games, and my system is only allowing me to save about 10-15 different saves.  According to this Turbo Duo Game Save FAQ, different game saves take up different amounts of memory.  I understand this, and I also understand that there is something called a TENNOKOE BANK which can help with running out of save memory without having to delete saves, although I don't fully understand how to use this yet, and I don't even have one right now.

My question is this:  Do the TG-16 Turbo Duo and all of the various PC Engine Duos all have the same save capacity?  Or do some of them have more or less save capacity?  As in, can one of the various Duo releases store more saves than the others?  If so, then I might want to look into getting the one with more save capacity, since I'm not fully understanding the benefits of the Tennokoe Bank yet, and I'm wanting to be able to save more than 10-15 different games.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Thoughts on resurfacing Turbo CD games]

I've been into TG-16 games since '91/'92 but only the HuCard games.  I'm planning on getting into the Turbo CD games very soon, and I just had a thought.
I know that these CD games are not getting any younger, and I'm a little concerned about the wear and tear over the years on the read side of the CD's.  A couple of my local retro game stores also sell used movies, and they will allow you to bring CD's and/or DVD's into the store and get the disks 'resurfaced' for a nominal charge.  Does anyone here have any experience with this or opinions about this?  Like, should I just play the games, and then if glitches occur, then look at possibly resurfacing?  Or maybe I should copy the CD and then play the copy?  Any opinions/advice would be very welcome.  I'm just planning on trying to get Rondo X, and I just want to protect my $70-100 investment.

Since I'm not really up to speed on prices for Turbo CD stuff, I figured that I'd ask about the prices that these games are for sale.

[Console Repair/Mod Center / Need a repair guy for a PCE Duo R.]

I'm wanting to get a PCE Duo R, so that I can play Turbo CD games and Japanese HuCard games.  I just missed out on the Duo R that Bernie was selling, but I came across this partially working one on eBay for what seems to be a reasonable price.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-Turbo-DUO-R-US-SELLER-/120964061124?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2a0517c4#ht_500wt_1414

The seller claims that the cd side spins but doesn't read, but that the HuCard side works fine.  If someone here can repair it and we could work the details out, then I'd be interested in working something out where the seller could ship it to the repair guy, and then the repair guy ship it to me, so as to save on shipping to me then to the repair guy, then back to me.  (I live near Chicago, so if a repair guy lives in the area, then I could probably work out local pickup as well.)  I figured that $183 shipped for a complete Duo R unit w/ 1 controller + repairs and shipping from repair guy would come in under $250, which is where I need to be, but if someone

So, if money were no object at all, if a multi-millionaire 'gamer' who liked to play pretty much all genres of video games were given a TurboGrafx-16, which games should he get? 

Suppose that he wanted to get 1 game at a time and play it until completion and have the full enjoyment of the game with no other distractions.  In your opinion, in what order should he get the games and play them?  Or, if you want to look at it differently, if a person were to have a TurboGrafx-16 flash cart of some kind for the 94 HuCard games and wanted to play the games through in best to worst game order, what would the order be in which he should play the games?  (Note: I am not in favor of emulation, and I don't use it myself, but if someone else does, that's their business.)  Also assume that this person would have friends available to play the multi-player games if needed.

I'm not looking for a list of the most expensive and/or most difficult games to find.  I just want a list of the 'best' to 'worst' U.S.-released HuCard TurboGrafx-16 games.

I'll go ahead and put my list up, although I haven't actually played every single game, so my opinions on some of the games will be based on reviews which I've read.

Please give me your thoughts, opinions, and your own personal top 94 in order from best to worst.  I'm mostly not much of a sports video games fan, so most of the sports titles in my list are towards the bottom.

[PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / 'pcengine-fx.com market value' Price List]

Since I am a newcomer here to this site, I would like to ask you 'old-timers' who have strong price opinions to weigh in on what prices should be correct for U.S.-released TurboGrafx-16 HuCard games.  I have some extras which I would actually prefer to trade for the 'holes' in my TG-16 collection, but I'm willing to sell them and then use that money to purchase the games that I want.  I have noticed that many of the members here have VERY strong opinions about prices and I don't want to get ripped to shreds because I accidentally priced a game over 'pcenginefx market value'.  Therefore, a list of the 94 U.S.-released TurboGrafx-16 HuCard games follows, and as members chime in with what they feel that fair market value is, I'll edit the first post to reflect submitted prices and hopefully this community can come to a consensus, and this information will be available to be used by all.

My registration finally got approved, so today is my first day for posting here, although I've been lurking for a few months.

I live in the Chicago-land area, and my personal TurboGrafx history follows:

I had a friend back around '90 who had a TurboGrafx-16 and I would see his great games (Cadash, Alien Crush, etc...), and I always wanted to get a TurboGrafx, but I just didn't have the funds.  I would even play Keith Courage or whatever sample game that any retail stores in my area had on display, and I would drool over all of the 'neat' TurboGrafx-16 games and such.  (All that I had experience with at the time was Atari and NES.)  Then around '95 or so after I had a job, I picked up a TurboGrafx-16 system and about 20 games (most has the jewel case and instruction manual).  I don't remember all of the games that I had, but I think that I had 2 CIB copies of Tonma and a CIB copy of Magical Chase - just kidding.  Actually I know that I had Order of the Griffen, Cadash, Galaga '90, Drop Off, Tricky Kick, Legendary Axe, Ghost Manor, Blazing Lasers, Victory Run, Sidearms, Double Dungeons, Final Lap Twin, Dungeon Explorer, Deep Blue, Neutopia, Neutopia II, and Keith Courage, but I can't remember the rest.  I never could find a 5-player adapter or extra controllers, so everything stayed 1-player.  Then, in '97, I boxed everything up for a while.  Not long after the Gameboy Advance came out, I became enamored with it, but I just didn't have the cash at the time, so I made a stupid trade around 2000.  I traded my entire TurboGrafx collection to someone for a new Game Boy Advance with a new copy of Advance Wars and one other game, the title escapes me right now.    Now, I'm mentally kicking myself over that trade.  About a 15 months ago or so, I decided to get back into retro gaming, and I really missed my TurboGrafx, so I eBayed some stuff, found a few things at a used video game store, and just yesterday picked up about another 17 HuCard games at a local Chicago-area convention, so now my TurboGrafx collection stands as follows:

Anyway, now I'm trying to decide where I'm going with this TurboGrafx stuff.  I have decided that whatever games I have, that I do want to at least have the Jewel Case (or maybe a decent repro case) and the original instruction manual, which means that I need to upgrade my HuCard-only games, but after that...  Do I want to try to collect the entire U.S.-released HuCard set?  Do I want to just get a couple more of the good games, while ignoring the expensive ones and the not-so-good-ones?  Do I want to venture into the CD games?  Do I want to venture into the PC Engine games?
