2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I recently had Turbokon install a RGB to Component board in my Tennokoe Bank 2. The Tennokoe Bank 2 is a relatively cheap battery backup unit for the PC-Engine that is also easily modded to fit U.S. Turbo's.  The edition of Turbokon's RGB to Component video board to the Tennokoe Bank 2 adds a ton of value allowing you to hook your Turbo up to modern tv's with near RGB quality.  Those of you who really want to use your Turbo, or possibly other retro game system, on your tv can't go wrong with this mod. Those of you on the fence in regards to modding your system past stock should really get a Tennokoe Bank 2 and have it modded. You get all the benefit Of higher visual quality and battery backup while keeping your Turbografx or PC-Engine stock. Turbokon can be contacted in these boards, or at his website here. You will also find pictures of his mod and the quality it represents.

http://www.tg16pcemods.com/mods.html

Tennokoe Banks may be found by Pcenginefx members, or on ebay ranging for $25 to $50.

Huge thanks to Turbokon for the work and extremely quick turnaround and fast shipping!!!

After having Thesteve recap and put a new screen into my Gt, and Duo-r adding a lithium battery mod and replacing the control contacts, I finally got the chance to finish off the "ultimate Turbo portable" thanks to Turbokon. Turbo addes a controller port to my GT, and more importantly a component video out board. I can now use my GT as a portable with a large screen and long battery life, or as full blown turbografx with near RGB quality anywhere I go without the need for bulky hardware.  The picture I have included is my GT hooked up to my father in laws 60" plasma TV. The colors are a tad off, but it turns out its the Tv's settings and i'm not allowed to screw with them LOL.  Otherwise, the pictures scales nice and looks clear.  Add a controller and you got gaming goodness. I want to thank Turbo for the mod, its well worth it :)

So, your new and you joined our forums. We welcome you. Pcenginefx is infact a great place with great people and a lot to learn. Your not sure how to get started. There seems to be two schools of thought on this with many recent New Age Noobs. Most reasonable people would Wait, watch, and listen to the new forum they have joined. Get a feel for the people and the subject matter. After all, you don't know who your dealing with, there histories, or recent events. So what do you do? Slowly integrate and learn as mentioned before. Or, throw on your elves slippers and red cape, zip line in, and singly handedly save the forum for those sharped tounged asswhipes that offend you so easily. Tune out, you have the power. There is plenty to see and do here. Don't like two people hashing it out, move on. The choice is yours. These forums, as most forums do, have there conflicts, and always will. Think the place sucks cause a few people had a rumble, then you did not spend any time looking at all the other stuff going on and thats a shame, and your fault.
Participate or move on..........you can do it :)

At Tggodfrey's request :) I would also like to point out, that despite our differences at times, there is a common respect amoungst most members here. Things can get crazy at times but overall we give each other our space. I myself have only been here a short time compared to alot of other members and try hard to temper my comments as i'm largely a noob myself in perspective.

General Gaming / Retro-duo RDP
12/31/2012, 12:43 AM
For those of you into retro gaming and want a machine that can be both portable and a system, the Retro-duo RDP is worth looking at. A friend of mine picked up two of these recently:
http://compare.ebay.com/like/360532047343?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
Basically the system can play snes and nes games out of the box. Genesis games can be played with optional adapter and gameboy games with a super gameboy. We tested both of our systems and found 99% of the games we tried worked without issues. Some of the snes games that give other systems fits worked fine like Mario rpg, Yoshi's island, megaman x 1,2,3, earthbound, and mario kart. The screen is very good and the system is comfortable to hold.
Here's the catch. The quality of the system seems to vary from batch to batch. After a ton of research it seems that almost everyone has atleast one minor problem. A handful have huge issues. The controls on our systems were very good, with mine being just a tad more stiff. Sound however was abit louder on my system than on his. Plugging in headphones not only solves this issue, but has excellent bass output and very clear stereo sound. All games tested (around 100 various nes, snes, and gameboy games, we dont have the genesis adapter) all of them worked on my machine. Two games did not work on his, doom and yoshi's island for snes. it could have simply been a variation in the cart slot that caused the problem. The battery lasts twice as long as other comparable systems at roughly 6.5 hours (they claim 8). It comes with external hookups for real snes controllers and outputs to the tv allowing multiplayer games and to be used like a system.
For me the lowdown is it worked very well and i have no complaints. Many have bought one and had issues only to exchange it and get one back that was near perfect. Despite two minor issues or machines performed excellent.
Now all they need to do is make a portable turbografx with sdcard support that loads cd games and i will be all set :)

General Gaming / Super Bonk Sucks!
12/08/2012, 12:04 AM
Ok, i'm sure some of you are gonna hate this one, but i can't be nice about it. I love bonk. Bonk's Revenge is one of my favorite platformers. Super Bonk for snes sucks!!!  Why? you ask. Well, first of all: BONK SHOULD NOT HAVE SLOWDOWN!!!!  Super Bonk is a sloppy mess of slowdown. Music sucks, sound effects really suck, level design in shit. The way he slides around the game should be called "Bonk on Ice". The only bright spots in the game is the graphics are decent, and some of the mini games are fun. I made it to the last level with tons of lives and simply gave up. I could not stand one more poorly designed level. Hell, Bonk on gameboy was considerably better, despite lack of color and sound channels.

After many attempts and failures i finally beat bonks adventure for gameboy. Its a decent conversion combining elements of both bonk's 1 and 2 from the turbo. timing is everything, once i got that down i did much better.

Ok, this has been discussed many times before. The new twist is this version is cheaper, does not require nearly as harsh peroxide (great for those with kids and pets who are worried), and does not seem to need sunlight for results. I was watching mythbusters and they mentioned making a cleaning solution out of 3% peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. All three can be had at a dollar store for, well $3. The baking soda and chemicals in dish soap combine with the peroxide to produce a ton of oxygen bubbles. I put whatever i want to bleach in a container (metal pan from dollar store works great), put in the solution (specific amounts does not seem to matter), and then put it under a flourescent light. I get results in one hour.
However, there is one huge drawback. It only works with mildly yellowed items. I have bleached two controllers, and my duo so far and all three came out yellow free in one hour. I tried the same solution on a heavily yellowed gameboy and it had no effect. If you have anything that is beginning to yellow, and you wanna bleach it on the cheap, you can't go wrong with this method. will work all year round and get fast results. otherwise, I believe it was Arkhan in another thread that pointed out a much better method for heavily yellowed items.

You will need:
baking soda $1
3% peroxide $1
dish soap $1
Metal reflector utility light $2
Compact flourescent bulb $3

I bought all but the metal reflector enclosure at the dollar store. Got the reflector at walmart next door. $8 is cheap money to whiten stuff up :)

Hope this helps anyone.  And don't ask for pictures, my camera is shit, i can tell you that it definately works. heavier peroxide would no doubt have better results on more yellowed items. the baking soda seems to remove the need for direct sunlight making this a year round solution.

OK, i'm putting this in fighting street because its bound to get hot!!  If you were stuck on a deserted island what console would you prefer to have based on quality of games to play. Here are the rules:
You are allowed one console and one only, and you have to list atleast 5 games you would play for that console, and WHY!!
You are allowed to change your mind ONCE! Your being stranded on a deserted island for gods sake you got to get it right. If you were wrong the first time, what would be your second choice?

If I were stuck on a deserted island my pick of console would be a Pcengine GT. Why, because it would be light and play all my favorite turbo games. I would most likely spend most of my time trying to up my score in Alien crush, or trying to fight my way through legendary axe 2, or bonking the hell out of everything. My second choice would be super nes. WHY? because it as well has a great library of games that i love to play. Why is it not first? i love portables, if i'm on a deserted island i want to be able to play my games on the go while i'm looking for food and water.

What would you guys pick, and remember, your on a deserted island, think survival :)

Ok, I need help building this cable and i'm finding conflicting info. What i want to do is build an rgb cable that will interface with this unit:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GBS-8200-CGA-EGA-YUV-TO-VGA-video-converter-arcade-game-/260797831941
On my duo i was able to make a direct connection to the upscaler using an 8pin din (duo is modified for rgb) to the RGB and sync pins on the upscaler.
The genesis is said to natively output rgb with correct cable. Some sources i have read say the signal does not need to be amplified. others say i need to build a sync stripper like this one:
http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/composite-sync-stripper-lm1881/
Can anyone shed any light on this. I built a cable using direct connection of the rgb and sync pins on the genny straight to the rgb and sync pins on the upscaler. It did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Huge thanks goes to steve for fixing up my machine, and to mike for walking me through how to make the rgb cable.

The current review is based on the Lithium Ion battery mod for the Turbo express/Pc-engine GT done by Duo-r. The original thread as well as pictures of the mod can be found here: More "juice" for the Turbo Express - Lithium Ion Mod.

Straight the the point this mod truly rocks. It has to be said though, if your a purist that wants to keep your system stock, this review and mod is not for you. The first thing you notice physically is..........well.......nothing. Duo did a great job hiding the Lithiums inside the battery compartment making sure the system looks completely stock on the outside. The second thing you notice is the system feels lighter. you now need less batteries to get the same if not better performance. A lighter machine is not a bad thing as the TE/GT's are pretty beefy as it is. The core of this review is, does the mod deliver. The answer is absolutely yes!.

I have had my machine back for a week now and have been playing off and on and the batteries have not gone dead yet. Even better is i know when i do have to charge, they will charge in less than half the time of my previous NiMH's. One key factor is that i'm not using the stock screen. I'm using a newer screen that is much more efficient than the original increasing battery life over stock units. I can't give an exact figure of battery life as i don't know how charged the batteries were when i recieved them. I can tell you this. My full charged energizer 2500 mah nimh batteries would only make it 4 1/2 hours. I have passed that with the new Lithium's and am still going.

So, what do you do ? If you want some of the best mobile turbo gaming that can be had, you send your machine to Thesteve and have him install a brand new, brighter, clearer, larger screen for your TE/GT.  Then you send your machine to Duo-r and have him install the Lithium's so you can enjoy that new screen for hours longer.

Thanks go to Duo-r for the mod!

Some of you know my latest project was to be a modded majesco gamegear. My brand new soldering died at the beginning of the project. this is my third iron in the last year. Can someone please recommend a quality iron that they use for their projects. Also my last iron was 40w the one before it was 30w. 30 just did not seem hot enough, 40 seems really hot. Whats best for these type of projects. any feedback would be appreciated.

Off-Topic / model boat
07/31/2012, 01:11 AM
I thought i would share with you guys the model boat i have been making for my mother. It's small and may not look like munch, but its all hand made. The hull of the boat started out as half a pecan shell. the metal railings are the legs of a resistor. it has an actually wood deck made of toothpicks laid side by side. The cabin alone is made from 20 individual pieces of wood. Once again sorry for the camera, its crappy. I retook this picture 7 times in different places and the camera just can't handle up close shots. As you can see the sails are not done yet. I have yet to figure out what i'm gonna make them out of.

Finally got my hands on a Majesco made game gear. They came out around 2000 and supposedly have better audio and video then sega made game gears. I'm gonna recap cap it and do a led backlight mod.

Edit:  Steve already recapped the gamegear for me and I finally got the parts to back light it. The original inspiration for the mod came from here: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13132. The method I used was the DS top screen backlight and the gameboy power inverter. The DS needs 15 volts to power the backlight and the gameboy inverter does the job nicely. The article mentions removing the plastic around the gamegear screen to make it brighter and have everything fit. I do not recommend this as its easy to damage the GG screen. Instead i used a small pair of wire snips to remove the bottom plastic edge from the GG screen allowing it to fit without further modification. I have 4 pics to share. As usual, sorry my camera is junk. The first three pics show various states of testing and wiring, the last is the screen when on. Sorry the picture is blurry, but you will notice the backlight is even all the way across with no hot spots.

Sorry folks, will add other two pics to post at end of thread. man i suck at this.

I realize its most likely a pipe dream, but can an rgb mod be converted to vga without an upscaler?
#28
I'm so tired of this "My console X destroys your console Y because it has better: graphics, sound, music et al.". True gamers understand that most systems have good games. When you

seclude yourself from a console due to ridiculous fanboyism, you miss out on..well..good games!  Lets go over some of the talking points shall we.

The Sega Genesis has bland colors and therefore bad graphics: The Genesis has many brightly colored games with outstanding graphics!  Try playing a few before you make such statements,

like....Crusader of centy, Monster World 4, Ranger x, Shining Force 1 and 2 and so many others.

The Snes has muddy sound, the Genesis is so much better: Here's a hot one! Sound quality is subjective and audiophiles can be insanely stubborn. While the Genesis does produce excellent

sound, anyone who thinks the Snes is a dud is nuts!  Donkey Kong Country, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario World, to name a few have incredible sound!

The Turbografx is only an 8-bit machine and simply does not stack up to the Genesis or the Snes:  The only people that could possible make a statement like this can't have ever played

one! Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Sapphire, Castlevania X, and Spriggan for example are not gonna play on your typical 8bit.

My Machine is blasted and processed and is really 156 super bits, yours can't even make a ham sandwich:  This is one of my favorites. We all get a long lecture from Uber techs as to why

there console is hot and yours is not. Many arguments break down into "What-ifs" that never actually made it into any commercial games.  Folks, hardware does matter to a point, after

that, kick as programmers rule the day!

Off-Topic / New 486 PC
05/17/2012, 01:31 AM
I have wanted to build a 486 pc similar to what i owned 16 years ago for a long time. I can say i now have just that. I recently built the following:
amd 5x86 155, 128megs of edo ram, shuttle hot-433 motherboard, stb lightspeed 128 video card, sound blaster awe32 with 8meg of ram, 8gb disk on module hard drive,  win95 osr2. it has taken me six months to slowly put together the parts i needed to make this machine do what i want. it has been a very long time since i have built and old at machine. I ask that any other enthusiast chime in on their setups and tips and tweaks. Please help me make this the best it can be. so far i have about 15 dos games installed and all working in win95. anyone needing any info on how to setup a classic gaming machine, dont be afraid to ask, i will help any way i can. unfortunately this machine is not fast enough to play pce games.................its only drawback :)

It was possible to buy some sort of vibration motor setup for most gameboys. while gimicky, for some games it was a pretty slick feature. Would it be possible to add a vibration motor to a gt/express, or to a controller to give some sort of feedback. Now i built something like this for a genny controller once, and i made sure i used the button that was the action button in most games. If i fired my guns in a shooter, or jumped in a platformer you would get feedback from the motor. I would like to see something similar to this on the gt with a pot to adjust the level of feedback. What do you guys think?

Did some rearranging today and i'm now in need of a duo controller extension cable. I know were to buy them, but was hoping somewhere here could give me a reasonable deal on one. thanks.

I like the thread above about turbo glitches. I'm gonna modify it abit for this thread. Tell me about your non turbo bugs or hidden tricks you dont think anyone knows about.

Here is mine:  In Megaman three when you get to the final Dr. Wiley robot, you are supposed to use snake mans power to kill him.   I have no idea if this ones a bug

or a hidden trick but I killed him with Topmans topspin. You have to jump almost exactly in the center of the head of the robot or it wont work.

Once you do activate topman's power and land in the center of his head. If you do it right he will die in one hit!  I have personally never seen this anywhere else.

Someone do some research on this to make sure a: i'm not crazy and b: when did both games come out respectively?

I finally finished SO2, and wanted to share my thoughts:

Startling Odyssey 2 is a very well crafted game. Everything from the music, the sound effects, the dialog, to the graphics are all very well done. The game does not require a great deal of

leveling allowing you to travel seamlessly between areas.  Your characters have a real sense of worth. They grow throughout the course of the game in purpose and in

relationship to each other.  Dialog ranges from witty banter between characters in light hearted moments, to dire when its all on the line.  Startling Odyssey 2 does a very good job of

making you care about you're characters and the world around them as it slowly falls apart.

Game mechanics are standard fair. Menu systems are well laid out and easy to access. You're characters have a considerably wide range of magic, items, and attacks to dispatch your

enemies or protect your comrades.  Battle tends to be simple as enemy Ai is not usually all that tough. However, boss battles and certain areas of the game can be quite challenging.  Spells

are powerful and have the look and feel of dealing out serious damage. Weapons and armor are plentiful and allow for a surprisingly deep amount of customization. Some raise spell points,

others increase luck, while all protect your party from the very diverse amount of monsters you will face.

Graphics range from ordinary in some sparse areas to extraordinary in the more complex maps.  All are very colorful, especially the animated cut scenes that do not disappoint.  You're on

screen characters are large and detailed, as are the numerous npc's you will meet in your travels.

The musical score is mostly bright and upbeat. Most of the tunes can hold there own with any other rpg. The one complaint I have with Startling Odyssey 2 is the music while good, is not

always matched to the right mood. The beginning of the game starts out dark as your sister is kidnapped and your castle destroyed. Despite the tragedy, your travel music sounds

extremely patriotic as if your about to go watch fireworks on the 4th.

Startling Odyssey 2 is an excellent game and I highly recommend anyone in these forums play it.  Its easily one of the better rpg's for the PC-engine platform.

Ok, this is purely a technical question, so please give me your thoughts. In the Hardocp forums a few years back, I saw a guy that changed all caps and replaced the op amps on his sound card. He did not use just any caps either, supposedly he had special Audio grade caps. The question is, just like Steve pointed out it was possible to add caps to filter out the video, Is it possible to improve the audio of your duo?  Would so called "audio grade caps" make a difference. Are thier op amps that can be replaced with better ones?

Consider this a semi sequel to the lame trash talk thread. I'm a huge fan of the comedy central roasts, and now i encourage you to let me have it.  However, I do have a couple rules.  Anyone can say "I had your mother" or "fuck you, you gay bastard". What i'm looking for is clever smack. I want a carefully thought out ass kicking! To help you filthy vultures out, I will give you some details to work with.

I'm going bald (and probably most of you are as well)
I"m missing three teeth (I pulled the last one out by hand)
I have a hole in my coconut from having a tumor pulled out (they actually left the tumor and took out my brain as it functions better)
Read any of my posts, I cant spell for shit
I'm from New Hampshire (that explains the comment above)
I'm a twin
I once worked at Mcdonalds
I'm a 1/4 polish

Ok you Bastards, come and get me and make it good! I expect a few laughs!

Thanks to thesteve for fixing my gt and giving it a kick ass screen (all of you complaining your gt's screen is to small, steve can correct that for you)
thanks to Milford and sparky for selling me some great games at a great price (sparky also included a swanky bonk sticker)
Thanks to Bartre and Sadler for thier generosity (despite some doomsday threads in these forums, i would say the community is very much alive)
And thanks to anyone i may have forgotten and everyone that has contributed to keep my favorite hobby going.

If you have someone to thank, dont hesitate to let them and us know :)

What is your opinion on the ugliest hand held consoles ever. My top 5 are:

1. The gizmondo:  Bizzare shape and ugly trigger buttons coming out the top
2. Atar lynx model 1:  Large and dog bone type shape did not do it for me
3. Sega Game Gear:  Sorry folks, I got no love for its design
4. Gameboy micro: I know some of you love it, but i personally could not stand it
5. Gameboy advance: This ones tough as it depends on the color. Certain colors on this design looked terrible, while others looked just fine.

Once again, since hoobs missed it, here is my wifes pick for uglies hand held

Ok, i lied, its time for a new series. What is your opinion on the sexiest hand held system ever. My top 5 are:

1. Turbo expresss/Pc-engine gt:  this is a no brainer for me, truly the best, and heavy enough to mug someone (personal defense is a plus)

I have wanted a PCE GT/Turbo express since the day they came out. Two years ago I gave a TG16 to my best friend to introduce him to the Turbo for the first time. Until then he had never heard of one.  This year he bought me a PC-engine GT with the help of my wife as an early christmas present.  I sent it out to Steve for repair and a new screen and got it back today.  First I want to thank the hard work and dedication of this community to even make such mods and repairs possible. I have been to alot of forums and this one has one of the closest communities I have ever seen.  Also, huge thanks to Steve for taking on the project and putting up with me for the last month.  He did a fantastic job and I highly encourage anyone wanting similar work done, look him up.  Please forgive the picture, my lack of photoshopping skills does not do the picture justice at all. Turns out, my batteries suck as well. After reading another thread in this forum on just such a matter, i'm gonna purchase some eneloop rechargables to fix the problem.  I dont have the funds yet. When I do get the batteries I will put up a picture of it running.

Forgive the blatant butt snorkling, but i'm a huge turbo fan and this site and its forum goers has made my dreams possible. Thank you all again, and Huge thanks to Steve!!!

General Gaming / fc mobile 2 screen
11/29/2011, 04:32 PM
Maybe some of you modding wizards can help me with another idea i have. I have a Fc mobile 2 and frankly the screen sucks. How hard would it be to replace the screen with something like this: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/3-5-tft-lcd-monitor-visual-reversing-vehicles-reverse-camera-ntsc-pal-dc8-15v-49796

For lack of better understanding basically all i would need to find is the composite sync, ground, and 5v points on the fc mobile correct?  Or is it more involved than this?
