10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I'm a gamer girl who really likes older consoles, the new ones just don't do it for me. My livejournal is dedicated mostly to the PC-FX, NEC consoles and the 3DO.

Galaxy Fraulein Yuna FX first impressions - December 24th, 2007

My grandfather died today.  This led me to finally get the PC-FX set up.  I am in the middle of a move, so there just hasn't and still isn't room for it to really be out all the time.  I must say so far though, that this is one of the coolest systems I have ever played, or at least I really enjoy the Yuna game.

I explored the main game mode and was at first greeted to an intro which puts the intro to shame on the PS1 Yuna game.  Where the PS1 game has barely 15 or 12 FPS, the PC-FX game plays the same intro basicaly, but at a blazing 30FPS.  The color on the PC-FX intro is also much more free of artifacting.  Although the audio quality on the PC-FX version is a little bit worse than the PS1 intro.

After 2 quick segments of Japanese text, you are greeted to a complicated graphical version of rock-paper-scissors-counterrock-counterpaper-counterscissors or something like that.  You have 2 meters in this game.  A green one which is your HP and an orange one I call Energy.  The goal seems to be to raise your Energy until it is over an orange line by using attacks which do not use energy as well as to weaken the enemy until it no longer takes damage.  Once this occurs you unleash a finishing attack which may or may not do enough damage to kill the enemy.

There is also a moving power bar like in some Golf games, I do not know if it is best to attack when it is empty or full as both seem to do the same damage.  For about 3 lives I was wondering if something was somehow wrong with the game everytime the enemy stopped taking damage, as this is not always the same HP place on the enemy's green bar, but eventually I figured out what to do.  The music seems alright, but the 4th time I fought the first enemy it was getting a little old.

After the battle there is a FMV sequence where it will show video and then prompt you for a responce.  I played through this part a few times and I think the first option is the only one where it matters what you say.  And if you get it wrong you can just answer again.  It feels kinda like watching the first Yuna OVA as it uses footage from it.  I put the CD in my computer to make some screenshots to illustrate getting around the boss invulnerability.  I noticed on the PC there is a disturbing delay when you press the button to stop the power meter.  This gets worse if you slow the emulated clock down too.  So far I would rate this game a 8/10 ^_^
