10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

that's a fun time! I'd have liked to go!
#202
Wow, this is great!! What a weird thing you decided to make! I love it!
#203
huzzah!
#204
Castlevania Adventure Rebirth is hard to call a throwback - it's a completely new game that uses a similar name, and some similar enemies to the GB game. It's also extremely good! So I'm not sure where this is coming from :P
#205
that PSone with screen sure is a fun object. I wish I needed it!

that's what I have to say about that
Fixed buddy!
thanks, I knew I was missing something!
#207
Yeah, let's square off!!!

And my girlfriend has a nice printer at work - she printed the front and back on card stock, and we glued them together.
#208
I'm also surprised by galaga. It feels pretty dated to me even in its 88 version.
#209
China Warrior is good
that's what I have to say about that
#210
It's not exactly an a-life thing, but you can collect all 30 dogs and get a top breeder ranking, and they've got their own section in the game, and all that! So... yeah :P
#211
that's a cool list, turboswimbz!! It's missing a few things, but still a nice start.

and right, I always forget about the hucard altered beast!

Quote from: Gypsy on 10/17/2017, 05:05 PMI was ready with some sweet suggestions then I saw PCE only. Sweet list so far. I enjoyed Anesan. I should burn off Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari.
oh, I mean turbo as well, but yeah, not just beat-em-ups in general. it does seem as though there are very few of them!
#213
Bonk is a platformer, horror story a run n gun, and altered beast doesn't have simultaneous multiplayer, right? So no to those, unfortunately :\ added Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari though!
#214
Someone asked this question, and I had a hard time making a definitive list. How many (simultaneous) multiplayer beat-em-ups were there on the PC Engine/TG-16?

Here's what we've come up with:
Anesan
Galaxy Keiji Gayvan
Double Dragon II
Cadash (sort of counts)
Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari
Altered Beast (HuCard version)

Are we missing anything??
#215
here we are then! looking forward to trying it!

Quote from: Digi.k on 10/16/2017, 06:18 PMI was thinking about choosing Yokai too since it was this game that sold me on getting the pc engine.  I love the graphics and audio of this game and it's so weird.  My only problem today is that I always have to disconnect any multi player adapter before playing and this also involves the wireless receiver as it stops the game from booting up.
it's real weird! It feels like there are tons of possibilities in terms of what you can do, even though it's not true - the feeling is there! that's weird about the multiplayer adapter thing! I wonder why that would be...
#217
Fun to see peoples' different choices! I went with:
Splatterhouse (I love it - I prefer it to the arcade version too, but probably because I played it first. Also I realized I've played this game so many times that when my girlfriend was playing it I was actually able to give her lots of tips, haha)

Samurai Ghost (I just like the multi-directional sword and super weird vibe)

Youkai Douchuuki (what a cool and weird game with so many small arcane variants to what you can do - I want to know what cabbage things of it, since you chose it too!)
#218
I might have some stuff as I go through my games here, will let you know - in the meantime, where did you get your drive belt? Mine's still busted.
#219
Quote from: guest on 10/15/2017, 05:23 PMThe game has multiple options for both village and battle music, you can either have PCM or CD tracks (which slow things down as the CD has to seek the track first). I usually have PCM as it sounds great.
So for that particular track they just took the PCM and added some synth drums to it? well, that is odd!
#220
I guess because it's the saturn version that has that extra A*life-style thing where you can raise the hidden animals you catch! I know it's silly, but I want the full package  :P
#221
I'm curious how much you paid!!

Also, I recently got a bunch of new stuff that nobody probably cares about (gulliver boy, to compare to the saturn version! etc), but also in going through my collection I noticed I had a sealed copy of Violent Soldier. Why do I have that? Why is it sealed? Where did I get it from? I don't remember any of it.

does that ever happen to you all?

If you're curious, they were apparently trying to sell it for 6,500 yen new. It also had a newer updated sticker that said 1,000 yen. The poor thing.
#222
Paul, I've been listening to the 8 hours of pce tunes (which is great!), and I'm wondering where the heck this dragon slayer piece came from. https://youtu.be/lk0Iw8WkUXA?t=5h25m10s

It's PCM plus drums! I don't remember that happening in the game!
#223
Hey all. I've been putting it off for years, and it doesn't look like it's gonna get any dang cheaper. I used to have a friend's copy on long-term loan, but I gave it back to him and he sold it and now I have nothing :P

I was just in Japan and found it for 14,500 yen, which isn't bad, but is more than I want to spend, so I'm hoping to trade somebody for it, maybe with some cash on top. I'll get my trade list together here, but in the meantime I want to see if there's anyone who wants to part with the game at all!

Lemme knowww
#224
thanks for the reference!
#225
ah, so that 2nd one was the same as the one I linked earlier! still cool though - how many more of these things  do you have?
#226
Quote from: guest on 10/10/2017, 11:16 AMOriginal Shantitties is even crazier.  Of course I've got a nice $3 bootleg so I could care less, but I personally think the first game is weak compared to the later ones.
shantae is bad, but I've got it boxed, so... I'll be selling that eventually.
#227
hmm, yeah, where does the date come from? Even so, I was playing my duo til past midnight last night, so if this is indeed the birthdate, I got right in there!

I've got a victory run where the manual is all water damaged if you want that :P
#229
@michirin, you have Asuka as your #1 CD game - I'm curious about that! I love the series, but the PCE version is one of my least favorites. What makes you like that one so much? I'm spoiled by playing Limited on saturn I guess.

Quote from: imparanoic on 10/03/2017, 09:36 PMi purchased coryoon for GBP35 in  1995 at a shop called telegames in leicester, england, but a few years later, i lost it ...
A sad tale! the same telegames that wound up releasing some Jaguar games, right?
#232
I bought my JP magical chase for 3,000 yen :P
#233
I just bought one yesterday - I'll print out your thing for it!
#234
haha, I'm sure it was real - he's had it for a number of years. And I'm sure everything is for sale at the right price, but it's in the part of his store that he's made a "museum" so it'd take a lot of convincing. There was also a coryoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was in Seoul - but now I'm in Tokyo, where everything's for sale. Wish me luck!
#235
I love it!!!! So good! What a find!

Also did y'all notice they were using Fighting Street SFX during the Andre Panza section?
#236
but it wasn't for sale
and I couldn't afford it even if it were
now I'm sad
#238
I am sort of interested - I do need a japanese dreamcast! but I am going to japan in like 4 days, so I might get one there! If I don't, then I'll be interested :P

thanks brexit! but still puts all these games just a bit out of my reach :P
#240
Snatcher, mentioned above.
#241
Very curious to see it!
#243
Sorry to hear about your friend!
I hadn't heard about this, but I searched and found something - is this the one you have?
#244
ah, what I meant was you were using some FM drums and all that in the other threads! also I tend to think of a cover as an interpretation on the theme - if you're going for accuracy, I guess I consider it a remake!
#245
My choices were based on what I thought might sound better on the PCE than it currently does, or at least pretty interesting on that chip. This is why I chose:

Elemental Master - Stage 3
Streets of Rage 2 - Max Man
Sonic CD - Stardust Speedway Past (curious to hear how you'll deal with all the samples)
TMNT2: Turtles in Time - Sewer Surfin
Hyper Duel - Black Rain

As I understand it you're not really about using "pure" PCE sounds, which might make my choices meaningless, but that's what I did anyway!

If you're interested in some interesting challenges, I have suggestions of my own:
(though this whole OST is great fodder for remixing - this one too: https://youtu.be/fAluV5w_-jI&t=676s )

have a fun time either way!
#246
I've done it, but not recently - my PCE isn't hooked up to my good speakers, my HDTV is - so usually if I want to play CDs "for real" instead of just on my boombox, I put them in a PS3 hooked up to the TV.

That said, for a while I lent my friend my CDX - he used it as a discman, seriously! For like a year. I'm glad it still works :P

oof, exchange rate killing me here, ha ha
#248
I'll link the specific parts, then!!
different key, but markedly similar! frankly most of it is pretty similar!
#249
This is incredibly stupid, but did you ever notice how similar the main refrain in this song from Ys is to the start of the chorus in Green Day's "When September Ends" song  ??
Did green day play Ys!? who cares :3
