RIP to BT Garner of MindRec.com... He passed away early 2023 from health problems. BT was one of the top PCE homebrew developers and founder of the OG Turbo List, then PCECP.com. Condolences to family and friends.

I'd have to say my favorite inserts have to be from the original Final Fantasy for NES. That game came with a lot of awesome stuff that really made you feel like you were in for quite a ride before you even turned on the system. A partial strategy guide? Not one, but TWO double-sided charts!? It has a lot of nostalgia value for me, and now I will tell you why, even though you didn't ask.

I remember my cousin Brent had the game when I was little, and I was very intrigued by it. I would re-read that manual/strategy guide over and over. Then he let me play, but made me SWEAR never to go to the Inn as that would overwrite his save game. One time I ignored him, because I thought I was smart, and decided that if I didn't hold reset while turning off the game, it wouldn't save. I was wrong. I was a stupid kid. I overwrote his game. Brent was pissed.

Oh, well. He was only at the Earth Cave anyway. No big loss.

Has anyone heard anything recently about the Ziria translation? It seems like it's been at least a year since I've seen anything about it. It looked like it was going well, I even saw some screenshots in English, but then it sort of disappeared from the radar...

I definitely agree that CrackTiger's version looks better. It just looks so much more vibrant. The colors of the arcade version feel unnaturally subdued in comparison. I cannot wait to see more!

In fact, I think I need to play some Golden Axe right now! This development has put me in the mood. Time to start up MAME!

Quote from: esteban on 10/17/2013, 01:04 PMThe only reasonable explanation for the title Altered Beast: SEGA, ever the collective of political artists and coders, were making a strong statement in naming the game—clearly, they are putting forward the controversial claim that man is a beast, despite our pretensions otherwise. Man, despite his poetry, his art, his religion...man is just as brutal, if not moreso, than the uncivilized animals he looks down upon.  SEGA suggests that we look no further than the gross injustices of the socio-economic systems that exploit the weak for the benefit of the elite. Indeed, the barbarity man imposes on man is the only "universal truth" revealed by our history of pain, no gain and inequality (SEGA rightly laughs at the foolish physicists and their futile attempts to find "universal law")—the only law in the cosmos is that man is savage and rationalizes this brutality by perverting Science, Law, Progress and Art.

Whoa, that's deep.

I received my game today. I just finished playing for the evening, and I really enjoyed it.

While Insanity is definitely a port of Berzerk with few frills, Pyramid Plunder feels like it has a little more of its own identity separate from Pac-Man. The Egyptian theme is quite unique for this genre, and works quite well, and the power-ups that you can activate on command add a good layer of strategy that wasn't there before.

Very nice, Arkhan. I can't wait to try Atlantean. :D

General Gaming / Re: Never Played NES
10/14/2013, 06:55 PM
You've never played NES, huh? You're in for a treat! Here's a few suggestions of games that are excellent (IMO) that are not talked about too much:

Adventures of Lolo - A unique puzzle game series by HAL. Known as the Eggerland series in Japan.

Power Blade - A fun, often overlooked action game. Not to be confused with Power Blazer, the much-inferior Japanese version.

Blaster Master - A unique take on the MetroidVania genre.

Goonies II - Another decent (but strange) MetroidVania based on the classic movie from the '80s.

River City Ransom/Street Gangs - A Beat 'em up/RPG with tons of personality.
#266
I have FINALLY bought a copy of this. I haven't received any confirmation yet, though. Has my game been shipped, Arkhan?

I just wanted to bump this thread to remind everyone of this project's existence. I hope things are going okay and that it won't get cancelled. It's been a really long time since any official news was given, and I know there have been some setbacks as of late. I still have faith that it will one day be finished and released, though.

Good luck, SamIAm. Know that I'm still cheering you and Esperknight on. I know I've been a little overzealous about knowing how things are going, and I'm sorry about that. I've just been really excited (and a little impatient). Keep fighting the good fight.

Hey, what the heck!? The forum looks all cool and stuff all of a sudden! :P

I like the change; it gives things more...personality.

I haven't finished it. I burned a CD-R of it and it always started glitching out after a while. It was a Sony brand disc I believe. Maybe I should try a different brand? Or maybe just play it on an emulator?
#271
I watched the new video, and I must say that I am quite impressed. It looks very professional, like something that NEC would put out back in the day. The background with the multiple layers is gorgeous and a real showstopper. It's the first time that I've felt like a PCE homebrew has achieved something that looks like an official game. You've come a long way since Insanity, Arkhan! I applaud you. =D>

Unfortunately, I desperately need to play catch-up. I still haven't bought Pyramid Plunder or the new version of Meteor Blaster. I'm really embarrassed...
#272
LOL, that box art gets me every time! Only Jaleco would have the balls to do something that cheesy! Weren't they also the makers of the NES game Totally Rad?
#273
While I do not hate the SNES, I do agree that it's one of the more overrated consoles, and I don't mean that just because I grew up with a Sega Genesis. A lot of people (especially fanboys) claim that the SNES was the "gre@e$t con$ole EV@R!!!!!1111" while bashing the Genesis and Turbo for not being tuff e'nuff, all to the point where I start to wonder if they think the SNES can cure cancer.

If it's so great, why do I have more love for the Genesis and Turbo?

There are a lot of great titles for the SNES, but I feel like the libraries of the Genesis and Turbo are just more...inspired. All most people seem to remember about the SNES are the classic RPGs and a few action/adventure titles. Most of the rest of the library goes unnoticed, whereas Genny and Turbob have classic games in MANY genres. I actually wonder, now that I think about it, if the reason the SNES had so many RPGs was because it was so hard to program good action games for it.

The one thing that truly gets me though is when Pier Solar, a remarkable achievement for homebrew, was finally released for the Sega Genesis after years in development, and all the little fanboy twats could ask about is "When is it coming out for SNES?" and I just want to say, "Go buy a Genesis off eBay, YOU DUMB FUCKS! They're quite cheap, last time I checked, and if you REALLY wanted to play this game, you would! You're not even true gamers. You're just a bunch of little zombified fanboys who are stuck in the early '90s, pretending that maybe, if you jerk off hard enough, you'll stay relevant. Take off the rose-colored glasses, move the FUCK on, and play a game because you WANT to, not because it's for the closest thing you have to a lover!"

This also upsets me because SNES boyz love to make fun of the lack of RPGs on Genesis. Do you know why they want Pier Solar on SNES? I think it's because they're jealous.

Fanboys also love to inflate the power of the SNES sound chip. If it's so much better, explain to me why Ys 3, a game with one of the best soundtracks ever, sounds horrible on that system. A good sound chip doesn't mean shit if you can't make it sing well, and from what I've heard, the SNES sound chip was quite hard to program for.

Also, just so I can turn an old joke around: The SNES sucks, because it can't play Gate of Thunder!

Not only is political correctness stupid, it's also dangerous. People enforce it because there is something they don't want people to talk about, usually an important issue.

Example: African Americans who want to be treated like royalty because of slavery, which ended OVER A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. Get the fuck over it! I'm not saying what happened was not that bad, but their attitude that we "owe" them something even now is insane. Their claims that they can't get a job or be prosperous because we're still somehow keeping them down is pure SELFISHNESS. We have all these laws that protect against discrimination, and while it still does happen sometimes, they just want more and more and more. They don't want justice. What they want is revenge.

Another example: Abortion rights. I understand abortion being used in serious cases, such as rape, but when women use it as a "get out of jail free" card to get out of a mistake or not being careful, that's called MURDER. Women make this big fuss about how they have a right to choose and we men can never understand. That's bullshit. They just don't want to have think about what they are doing seriously. They dehumanize the unborn baby, so that they don't have to own up to the fact that if they didn't want to get pregnant, they should've made sure someone was using a condom.

One more example: Gay marriage. Conservatives use the bible as a reason to keep gay couples from getting married. Well, I'm a Christian and I don't give a shit about what they say. Last time I checked, we didn't live in a theocracy. We need to stop worrying about what a group of people say a book written thousands of years ago hints at, and just let people be happy. These people also look on homosexuality as some kind of evil. Here's my view: God made everyone and loves them. Homosexuals don't decide to be that way, they just are. THEREFORE: God made homosexuals and loves them.

Instead of just saying "Enough!", the U.S.A. has allowed political correctness to prevent people from solving important issues logically and effectively. We try to bury our problems in the backyard and hope they go away. This is not what this country I love is supposed to be about. The sad truth though, is that we've allowed this to happen through complacency.

P.S. Both political parties can go to hell. Neither group cares about people. They just want to get their collective way.

Yes, it's true. I'm planning on making my own version of Tower of Druaga. It will be based on the arcade version, but will feature new levels and treasure solutions.

IMG

Since there was a port of the original game to the PC Engine, I'm assuming that it will be alright to have this thread here.

IMG

Now, it will be a while before there's anything playable, this first post is more of a letter of intent, really, but I am currently learning how to program with SDL graphics in C++ and this will (hopefully) be my first full game with it.

So far, all I've programmed is seen in that screenshot above, but I am learning quickly and hope to have something more exciting to show you in the near future.

Until then...

Quote from: Tatsujin on 03/17/2013, 10:09 PMthere were also several appearances of tower of druaga on the namco museums (PS1, DS etc.).
Yep, I just got a copy of Vol. 3 of the PS1 set. It contains probably the best release of the arcade version, due to the fact that not only is it arcade accurate, but it also contains two secret level sets, for experts and masochists. These bonus level sets were never re-released on future versions; they're only on the PS1 release.

Not that I'll ever need to PLAY those bonus level sets. The original game is hard enough for me! Although, I recently did the best I ever have at the game: Floor 13 with over 100,000 points!

General Gaming / The Druaga Series Thread
03/17/2013, 09:15 PM
Thank you for reading. You zapped to...Arjak's personal neurosis.

I must be nuts telling you all this, but...I like Namco's Druaga games. I say this without any sarcasm or joking. I really mean it. I don't know if this means something is wrong with me, but I really do enjoy this series.

Now, just in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, the Druaga series, created by Masanobu Endo for Namco, is a series of games based loosely on Sumerian mythology that began in 1984 with the arcade game, Tower of Druaga. Tower of Druaga is one of the very first Action-RPGs, and is also infamous for its brutal difficulty. In Japan, it was a smash hit, while most Americans have never heard of it, and those few that do most likely regret it.

In Japan, several sequels were released, here is a timeline:

-Tower of Druaga (Arcade, 1984)*
-Return of Ishtar (Arcade, 1986)*
-Quest of Ki (NES, 1988)
-Tower of Druaga (Remake)(PC-Engine, 1992)**
-Blue Crystal Rod (SNES, 1994)
-Sugoroku Adventure: Tower of Druaga (Arcade, 2000)
-Seme COM Dungeon: Drururuaga (Game Boy Color, 2000)
-Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon (PS2, 2004)*
-Druaga Online: Story of Aon (Arcade, 2006)
-Tower of Druaga: Recovery of Babylim (MMORPG, 2008)
-Labyrinth of Druaga (Mobile Phones, 2011)

* Released in the West
** Fan-Translated

Now, most of these games were never released outside of Japan, and only Nightmare of Druaga has made it to the West on its original platform. Some might say, "Good Riddance!" I, though, actually think that they are not all bad games; in fact, Nightmare of Druaga is a fairly respectable Dungeon Crawler RPG, and is actually quite fun. I've only played a few of the games myself, but I am eager to play more.

I am one of the few, the proud, the American Druaga fans.

What do you think?

I want a pressed disc of the Ys IV Translation, too! If those guys making reproductions of fan-translated NES and SNES games can get away with it, why can't we? No one wants to be stuck with a CD-R that won't even read right some of the time (if at all)!

Come on, BL! Please? Gamer cred on the internet is worth nothing! That's like saying: "I will totally call women who beat me in games sexist names and ruthlessly troll people who disagree with me, but people who try to use my work to help out fellow gamers? FUCK YOU!!!!!!"

Now, I know that you would never do any of the former, but I do find this a little ridiculous. I can understand not wanting to upset Konami by having reproductions made of Dracula X after they so graciously released it for the PSP, but Dawn of Ys will likely never be officially released in America. I don't see Falcom and XSeed making it a bonus on the new PS Vita version...

Fighting Street / Re: The Grudge Thread
02/25/2013, 04:32 PM
I have something I'd like to get off my chest that's been stuck there for a long time.

Several years back, I discovered this cool little game for the Sega CD called Snatcher. I saw a retro review for it in a game magazine that got my attention, and everywhere I looked for it, people seemed to be raving about it. I played it in a emu (Seriously!? $150!?), and fell in love with it myself. Then one day, I discovered that a few fans were considering creating a sequel fan game. I quickly signed on, and after we created a loose concept, I decided to try to write a script. One of the crew somehow got into contact with the English voice actor for Gillian Seed, the main character of the original game. With pre-production ramping up, I decided to announce the project on the forums of a fan-site called Junker HQ. That's when the nerd-rage of the so-called "fans" began.

It seemed like no one had anything good to say about anything we were doing, and we were barely into pre-production. This one guy, JohnnyUndaunted, seemed especially uppity. He never had one good thing to say, but had plenty of criticism, even though he didn't know anything about what we were doing. All these people seemed upset that we were somehow going to "ruin" Snatcher, even though all we wanted to do was give an opinion on what may have happened after its rather "open" ending. There was also this crazy guy calling himself Lebroz, who had all these bat-shit insane ideas, until we banished him from our sight. After that, we had a guy spamming our forum with insults, scaring away potential crew members, and generally being an all-around immature prick.

Before I had even finished a first draft of the script, I couldn't take it anymore; the insults, the snide comments, the general attitude that people were looking down their nose at us. I called it quits. I did that because I knew these so-called "fans" who acted like they wanted a sequel more than anything in the world were nothing more than snooty, douchebag fucks, who wouldn't even give us a chance. Even if this project had gotten finished and wasn't very good, I knew that they didn't deserve to have it, much less an official sequel. I dropped that community like a bad habit, and I quit the project, which never went anywhere afterward.

It was a bizarre experience, which I've never really gotten over. Ever since, I've been much more careful with sharing any fan-projects of mine with their supposed audience. The whole thing left me bitter and frustrated. I can look on it with more bemusement now, but it still hurts a little. What I find more strange than anything now, was their attitude that I would somehow never amount to what Hideo Kojima had created.

To be honest, even though I enjoy his games, I really don't think he's that talented a writer. Most of his ideas are borrowed from elsewhere, his stories tend to have trouble becoming a comprehensible whole, and he tends to blame the translator for his own failings. He comes across as a prima-donna. You could say the same about his fans.

In the end, I'm actually kind of glad the project never went anywhere. If the community hated us before we had even gotten a script together, do you really think they deserved any kind of finished product?

I really enjoyed this movie. The pacing of the action scenes was well done, unlike LotR where they just go on and on and on... I was a little surprised by all the changes from the book, but in a strange way, they almost make it better. I don't mean to insult any hardcore Tolkien fans, but The Hobbit book feels more like a serial than a cohesive novel, so adding in subplots and LotR tie-ins and other such things make it seem more rounded. I didn't realize that some of the material might have come from other Tolkien works. If that's the case, then I think the fans can rest easy.

All in all, very enjoyable. It's definitely worth seeing. :)

I find it hilarious that people are STILL trying to pull this crap. I'm starting to agree with the Professor. We probably should have a post count rule before being able to start a For Sale thread.
