Haven't seen him in forever.  His profile says last online March 25th.  Anybody here have closer ties with Tomaitheous/Malducci/TurboXray than I, so that they might be able to confirm he's okay?  Kinda concerned, TBH...

Remade the poll.  Users can now change votes (or at least i checked that off) and vote for up to FIVE entries.  Have fun!

If anyone notices any missing or duplicate entries, please speak up.

Today is the 25th birthday of Super Raiden on the PC-Engine Super CD-ROM2!

If you don't already know, Bonknuts and I are creating a little ROM hack for Super Raiden that adds to and enhances numerous aspects of the game.  Actually, the bulk of this has been done for, uh, years?  It's just never really seen the light of day.  The project would add the following features:

*Choose Original Arcade Soundtrack, 25th Anniversary Arrangement Project soundtrack (already implemented) or remastered HuCard chiptune soundtrack
*Switch to either checkpoint or respawn death (already implemented, no power up spewing)
*Switch to either original PC-Engine stretched aspect ratio or proper-ish arcade aspect ratio. (already implemented)
*Choice between three difficulty levels - Easy, Normal (original), or Arcade (already implemented)
*Toggle the two Super Raiden exclusive stages on or off (already implemented)
*New title screen
*???

So, in light of Super Raiden's 25th birthday, and as soon as Bonknuts finds some free time to finish up some coding, I will be polishing this up and releasing it as the...

SUPER RAIDEN 25th ANNIVERSARY PROJECT

P.S., there is a poll going on here to vote for the two tracks that should be covered in chiptune form for the Super Raiden extra stages.  Raiden II music is being used for the extra stages.  Last I looked, it's tied up, so more votes would be appreciated: https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=22106.0

YOU CAN VOTE FOR TWO TRACKS!

Top 2 results will be covered by yours truly and used in the Super Raiden 25th Anniversary Project!  The tracks will be used for the two extra Super Raiden exclusive stages to accompany the remastered PSG soundtrack!

Okay, so it's a given that I want to include the original arcade OST and the 25th Anniversary Arrangement OST as selectable soundtracks for the Super Raiden 25th Anniversary Project.  And it's looking like I might be able to squeeze in a 3rd soundtrack.  So the question is... what OST would you guys like to see as a THIRD selectable soundtrack on the project?

The HuCard Raiden OST with remastered percussion + chiptune covers by yours truly?

The ever popular PS1 Raiden Project OST?
The original Super Raiden redbook CD audio soundtrack?
Quote from: adminNever mind all that, OG HuCard OST for the win!

Or to hell with the whole project and just keep making chiptunes?  ;)

Here's another cover i just finished up.  Turned out pretty pretty close to the arcade.  :)  I'd like to put all the Raiden II covers I do in the Super Raiden 25th Anniversary Project to fill in the missing tracks for the HuCard soundtrack.  But 5 channel, LQ sample versions, so they better match the original HuCard OST.
#13
This one seemed a lot easier.  Probably both because the source material was simpler in design and I've since gotten a little more used to Deflemask.   Turned out pretty close to the arcade, really.

I kind of wish I could get the drum samples to sound cleaner.  Maybe I'll work on that later.

This is the 6 channel, 32KHz sample version, but it might as well be 5 channels since one channel literally does nothing for about 95% of the song... and the arcade track was like that too lol.

I want to do something special for the 5 channel, LQ sample version of this.  I want to rip the waveforms from the HuCard Raiden and use ONLY those waveforms for this... I'm betting this will really have that HuCard Raiden sound vibe if I do that.   :)

Still very early.  Only 3 channels roughly filled in... but you should be able to guess the tune.  :)

Here's the finished product guys.  My very first chiptune and it's a cover of Yuzo Koshiro's excellent Fighting In The Street (Stage 1) of Streets of Rage.  :)  I think I could probably play with the instruments some more, but I'm calling it done for now.  I might come back later and make some changes, but I want to cover something else next. ;)

EDIT: Finished

Full Chiptune Mix (6 channels, 22Khz samples):
QuoteDecided to start screwing around in Deflemask and ended up making (the first half anyway) of my very first Turbografx-16 chiptune!  From scratch.  Keep in mind I didn't even know what a tracker looked like until about a week ago lol  :D  It's a cover of Fighting In The Street from Steets of Rage 1.  Feedback welcome  :)

Would you guys be interested in some more of this kind of fuckery?  Super Raiden's birthday is coming up on April 2nd 2017, and I was thinking about getting together with tomaitheous at some point and polishing up the old Super Raiden hack we started and getting some kind of official release out by Apr 2.

The project would add:

*Choose either Original Arcade Soundtrack or 25th Anniversary Arrangement Project soundtrack
*Switch to either checkpoint or respawn death
*Switch to either original PC-Engine stretched aspect ratio or proper-ish arcade aspect ratio.
*Choice between three difficulty levels - Easy, Normal (original), or Arcade
*Toggle the two Super Raiden exclusive stages on or off
*Title screen replacement
* ???

Would anyone here be interested in having a custom map editor for Nectaris/Neo Nectaris that would allow you to create and replace maps, place starting units, set map size, place factories/bases, etc.?  The idea is that it would spit out modified ROM/ISO images or patches, respectively, upon saving.  It occurred to me that this could be a thing around here, and open up a lot of possibilities... people making custom 2p dedicated maps, net play via emulator, yearly tournaments, etc.  What's everybody else think?

So, today, I decided to get my 8 year old son's opinion on a couple games that are widely considered great ninja themed platformers... Ninja Spirit (TG16 version) and Shinobi 3 (Genesis).  He's never played either game before and I told him nothing about either game before he played them, so his opinion is not clouded by nostalgia or prejudice toward any particular console.

His verdict?  He thought both games were "really cool", but he liked Ninja Spirit better.  I asked him why, and his response was quite telling.  He said he liked how you started off with a "bunch of awesome weapons" in Ninja Spirit, and also how you could "jump super high".  He also said he liked how Ninja Spirit had "lots of guys trying to kill you".  He did like Shinobi's "ninja magic" and wished they had put something similar in Ninja Spirit, but preferred Ninja Spirit overall.

On a side note, I also had him play Ninja Gaiden for the NES... he said it was fun, but the graphics were "kinda crappy" and it was "too hard and annoying".  Hahaha

So there you go.  An 8 year old's unclouded opinion on Ninja Spirit, Shinobi 3 and Ninja Gaiden.  :)

In the arcade version of Aeroblasters (Air Buster), the ships were actually named.  They weren't named in the game, but the names were labeled on the cabinet as 'Red Wolf' and 'Golden Fox', if i recall.

So the question is... which ship do you normally pick?  :)

Here is a patch for Super Raiden that tomaitheous and I made a while back that adds a pre-game menu to Super Raiden that allows you to change things like switching to the original arcade OST or the arranged soundtrack from Raiden Project.  It also allows you to switch the death type to 'respawn' instead of 'checkpoint', switch the aspect ratio to something much closer to the arcade game, select between three different difficulty modes (easy, normal, and arcade), and turn off the 2 extra levels that were included in the CD release.

This patch needs a clean ISO+WAV rip generated by TurboRip (included) to install correctly.

Here's a little shot of the trainer:

Both of these are basically Compile doing what they do best... Enemy hordes, complicated power-up systems, and painfully long stages.  Which do you like best?

Here's a versus thread for ya... Pretty apples-to-apples comparison and there are three options!  :)

Here's an interesting one I haven't seen before.  This one should be close.  Would you rather play through China Warrior or get a firm, swift kick to the 'nads?

Tom and I have something special in the works for people who like Raiden and Super Raiden for the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16.  I think you're going to like it.  :)

I finally took the time to try to get the special 8-way vulcan weapon in Blazing Lazers.  Turns out, it's for real!  I got it by picking up nothing but pink orbs.  You have to pick up 100 of them.  You end up getting it about the middle of level 3, if you don't miss any along the way.  Here are a couple pics and the Ootake save state.  Check it out!  :)

Which one of these TG16 platformers do you prefer?  They have radically different feels and artistic styles due to them being different games in Japan, but are both similarly themed.  The poll has begun!  :D
#35
Okay, we did horizontal HuCard shmups, now it's time to do vertical HuCard shmups.  :)  I have a feeling I already know what game is going to run away with this one, but we'll do it anyway.  You don't have to own the game to vote for it.  If you've played it on an emulator or whatever, that's fine.  Also, apparently, nobody can change their votes since I've edited the poll, so make it count.
#36
If I've missed any, let me know.  Some games on here are kind of stretching the bounds of shmupdom (Mr. Heli, Veigues) but I'll include them anyway.  I didn't include Salamander, as it has vertical stages.

Just as the subject asks... what kind of community interest would there be a Neo Nectaris translation?
