Title: PC Engine Game Reviews & Manuals
Post by: lkermel on 06/15/2009, 01:09 PM
Hi everyone,

I've meant to do that for a long time and I've finally started to add game manual scans to my site. Only a few are available so far (1943-Kai (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?194), Adventure Island (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?adv), Fushigi No Yumi No Alice (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?ali), Armed Formation F (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?arf) ,Sapphire (http://www.videogameden.com/cdrom.htm?sap)) but I'll keep adding a lot more in the near future. They are all located in the Omake section from each review page, at the bottom. Do not hesitate to let me know what you think and also if there's a list of games you'd like to see first - I'm going now in whatever order my list of scans dictates me to go :)

Added more manuals:

Aeroblaster (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?aer)
Appare! Gateball (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?aga)
Bomberman (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?bom)
Download (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?dwn)
R-Type II (http://www.videogameden.com/hucard.htm?rt2)

Do you like the actual format of the PDF files ? Any feedback ? :)

Manuals are a dang nice addition to your site, though I'd rather see the front and back covers separated so that the back cover is the last page in the pdf.

I initially had them this way but it was a lot more work so I kept it simple with a 'douple page' format... I think is is also the format used by other sites such as replacementdocs... so I could change it but it'll be more work :(

This is a challenge indeed but I've been scanning all my games for the past years and they have been sitting dormant on my hard drive... so time to get all those Gigs in the wild !!!
I know exactly what you mean Paul, our sites are now gigantor monsters and it is really easy to fall behind, I still have sooooo much info and goodies I'd like to add in mine but I just don't have the time to do all of it :)

QuoteI wondered for some time why Sapphire was part of such collection and the answer is rather simple - they both share the same character designer, Mika Akitaka.
A wiki article states that the creator/artist was original working on Yuna as a shooter, but later the project was changed to a visual novel. One could assume Sapphire filled that void.

Quoteanyone have a good way to make a printout of a manual, and have it look good and fit?
alexsduo, do you mean from the PDFs I have posted or in general ?
The process I use to scan and store my scans sadly wipes out the print format information from the files... however, if I remember well, PC Engine manuals are 24x12 cms (I'd need to verify that though but they look similar to standard CDs) so it's probably easy to tell the printer/software to print at that size. I'm not sure if my PDFs have enough resolution though - I'm still experimenting with this and I'll probably have to increase the resolution even more in the future...
But I've never printed out manuals myself so I'm not sure what would be the best way to do double sided prints that'd be thin enough to fit in CD cases...

Hmmm, yepp.. I have a military madness cd game case with game, and it is missing the manual... So I tried to find it online, and did.. But, when I printed it, it was huge!  It would not work to go in the case... However, I found a version of silent debuggers, and when that printed, it was exact, and I fit it in the cd case.... The quality is really good, and if it were on glossy, it may be a good substitute.... I would love to see a place that has them all...

You just need the right software to be able to place/resize it. Or the PDF needs to have the resolution set correctly when it is originally saved.

Yeah, the Chō Aniki series is pretty 'unreal' - I recently got the Playstation game and this one surely tops all the others by far. I personnaly really like the first two games, especially the first one. The mechanical designs are incredible.

Yeah, I love this little game. The lack of "3D" is a bit of a shame but the arcade can be difficult to play because of it (controls are not aligned with the action).

Nice screenshots of Tatsujin! Interesting write-ups too. Sounds like this one really is crazy difficult. She goes for a pretty penny though, doesn't she?

Good to know that this shootie has a slim/arcade screen mode. I'll add that to the list. I wonder how many more games have the hidden option.  :-k  https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=4934.0

Great information! I have listed a new comment on that thread, relating to whether the image dimensions are actually increased as we know resultion to be measured (like on a camera) as opposed to simpy redrawing the image - I will test on an emulator.

Waooo, Ceti, this is a great thread !!! I've always wondered why the option was hidden away in most of the games... it is, I think, an amazing feature that should be included in ALL option menus :)
As far as I noticed, the arcade mode on Tatsujin seems to give more breathing space with identical sprites, so they (I think) use the Hires mode. I'll let you know if I know of any other games not listed on your awesome thread.

Thanks Paul for the heads-up, just fixed it :)
I've also added a note about Shadow of the Beast frustrating dead-ends. Although this PCE port is better (and easier) than the original Amiga version,  they've still included a couple of really annoying dead ends - I mean, you can get stuck if you don't pick up the correct items and you can't even backtrack to previous areas to retrieve them... that's poor game design...

Cool! :)

The history of PC Genjin you provided was great. I keep forgetting about that arcade game, too. What were the tickets it dispensed all about?

Just a couple of minor grammar edits:

"The game tells the story of a young and cute primitive caveman, whose is on a long journey to dethrone the demonic lizard king."

         ---Just change whose to who.

"His only weapon is his big and bald head, he can either hit his opponents with a simple head-kick or jump in the air and dive down, head first, to smash them."

---I would change big and bald head to big bald head.

---The comma before "he" could either be replaced with a period, or you could insert a semi-colon there as well:

Examples:

- "His only weapon is his big bald head. He can either hit his opponents with a simple head-kick or jump in the air and dive down, head first, to smash them."

or

- "His only weapon is his big bald head; he can either hit his opponents with a simple head-kick or jump in the air and dive down, head first, to smash them."

or

- "His only weapon is his big bald head that can be used to either hit his opponents with a simple head-kick, or by jumping up in the air and then diving down, head first, to smash them."

Any one of those options should work. Hope I was more helpful than annoying.

Keep up the goodness!

As a side note, I've included a new ad for Monster Lair (in the Omake section) that uses a different illustration than the final release of the game ! It features 'older characters', this is an interesting find I think, Hudson probably decided to make them look 'cuter' before release to attract a larger audience or something...

That alternate ad is really interesting, I don't think I've seen that before - the cuter characters that they used later are a better match for the game graphics.

Great updates, Ikermel. :)

I have a couple editing notes for ya, too. For now, just on the Monster Lair write up:

I could only spot a couple minor mistakes:

- The legendary amour and weapons of valor have been stolen and the thieves have vanished without a trace. Just when all hopes appear to be lost,

You just forgot the "r" in armour, and I believe it should read "Just when all hope appears to be lost,..."

I'll keep adding more edits as I go through them. I'm just on a major Wonderboy kick right now and read that one right away. heh

@sunteam_paul

Yeah, I really like this alternate ad, but I also think the cuter characters fit the game a lot better - I found it in a Gekkan from August 1989, which is exactly when Monster Lair was released :)

Very minor edits. :)

1. ...and a student of the Oh-Lin school of martial arts - Add the "s" to art.

2. One day, the warriors of the Dragon God went... - Add "e" to On.

3. The bald and axe-swinging monk doesn't have much choice; he must now go through five long areas, and save the children and reclaim the Oh-Lin scrolls. - Just added a semicolon between "choice and he". Added "and" before save.

4. Lee comes equipped with an axe - a weapon of limited range and accuracy. - Just added a dash, instead of the comma. They're two independent clauses and the dash serves as a stronger punctuation.

5. Other special items are also available for the taking - Health Bottles, Invincibility Crystal Balls, Lives, keys (to unlock spedial doors) or Capcom's trademark POW icon - which upgrades Lee's current weapon. - There were a lot of commas, so I just separated the weapon list from the sentence with a couple of dashes.

----------

Some of the reviews I read about this game say the collision detection in this game is absolutely terrible. But there's just something about this game. I remember it from the arcade and I'd like to see how the TG/PCE fairs.

Thanks for the uploads, Ikermel. :)

That "and" before "save the children" is not needed. You can keep the comma, but remove the "and".

So here is what it should read like:
Quote3. The bald and axe-swinging monk doesn't have much choice; he must now go through five long areas, save the children and reclaim the Oh-Lin scrolls.
Sorry for the confusion, Ikermel.

Oh, and there's only one thing I spotted:

@SuperPlay
Thanks mate ! I always really appreciate feedback about the site, it's often difficult to figure out if all the work we put into these sites is appreciated or not, so thanks a lot :)
Thanks for your offer too - scanning is actually not really an issue for me (I've been scanning my games for years and I have Gigs of data on my drive already), it's formatting the whole thing and updating the pages that takes time. This is why I've decided to do a couple of games a week - at this rate it'll probably take me 10 years, but I have zillions of other projects on the side, and I can only work on the site on Sundays. A step at the time is better than not steps at all though ;)

Your page on Space Harrier says it was programmed by DEMPA. Where did you get this information? DEMPA isn't credited on the title screen or in the manual (which doesn't mean a great deal, considering Compile is responsible for a great many games they weren't credited for), and I've beat the game many times and I don't recall seeing them credited in the credit scroll, either, but maybe I just missed it.

Anyway, I was always under the impression NEC Avenue handled the port. If you have information to the contrary, I'd love to see it. :)

DEMPA was responsible for the x86k version. never heard that they did also the pce port. but one thing they have in common at least, both lacking the checkerboard playfield.

Here it is. That's a snapshot I took from the Japanese version's end credits. I was also really surprised the first time I saw Dempa in there. I've always assumed that NEC Avenue programmed the port. And yet, Dempa handled so many other ports of Space Harrier, so it sorts of makes sense...

Wow.

I certainly never noticed this. I wonder if the US version is lacking that credit (I only own the US version, not the Japanese version). I wonder if they did the other SuperScaler games as well? Afterburner II, Outrun?

I've never finished Afterburner II and Outrun, maybe I can add them to my to-do list (as well as Thunder Blade). However, both games have 'reprogrammed by NEC Avenue' mentioned on their front cover though, so I have the feeling they were programmed by NEC avenue, but who knows...

Just found out Afterburner II was done by Bits Laboratory.

They also did Fantasy Zone, both the Altered Beast releases, and Gain Ground SX. I guess they liked doing SEGA ports.

Among the other, non-SEGA ports they did on the system: all 3 original Darius games (not Darius 2), Toilet Kids, Veigues Tactical Gladiator, Hellfire S, Hi-Leg Fantasy, Bubble Bobble 2: Rainbow Islands, Sidearms Special, Space Invaders CD, CD Mahjong, and Splash Lake.

Quote from: lkermel on 12/14/2011, 01:52 PMThat's a good point and I also wonder if the US version has different end credits...

Games they cooperated on: Download, Son Son II, Ai Cho Aniki, and some quiz and gambling games.
Kool info, nat. May I ask the source of info? Ending credits/online resources/interviews/etc. Thanks in advance :pcds:

Afterburner II and Darius (Plus) say right in the manual (look at the credit pages), and was corroborated by some online resource that I can't find now.

That same resource is where I dug up the others, as well. It was a special page on the works of BITS Laboratory/Laboratories.

I would imagine at least some, if not all, of these games probably also make mention of this in the ending credits.

EDIT: Found it. (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Bits_Laboratory) Interestingly enough, this page (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Freview-site.net%2Fdt%2Findex.php%2F%25E3%2581%25B2%23.E3.83.93.E3.83.83.E3.83.84.E3.83.A9.E3.83.9C.E3.83.A9.E3.83.88.E3.83.AA.E3.83.BC.EF.BC.88Bits_Laboratory.EF.BC.89) also lists Bubble Bobble 3: Parasol Stars as another title they worked on.

I've also added some information about the medal/key-chain that was given away to the first 500 players who managed to complete the game. Personally, I've never seen one of those, they are probably still in a box somewhere considering how poorly the game sold back in 1991 (I'm assuming...)

lkermel—I may have said this years ago, but one of the features of your site that I love = listing a game's credits. I know, I know, these credits are rife with problems, but they are the mandatory starting point and I have often used your site for this information specifically.  :pcgs:

Of course, I hope you'll find time to write up another feature article on the PCE one of these days....

I know! It must be about $$$ and management either cutting losses or shifting strategies. Do we have any evidence of major personnel (executives) leaving IREM at the time the projects were cancelled?

Of course, it probably has nothing to do with drama like that.

Most likely a simple matter of "will we even break even if we release this?"

Oh, it's you, you have an account here (been here 13 years I see)! I snagged some Final Blaster screenshots from your site some days ago (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=4765.msg520452#msg520452), but had no idea you were a member. Thanks for the updates! :)

You've got a great page format, very informative, pretty, etc. I'll say that, but...one block wall-o-texts need to be broken up into paragraphs though. ;)

Hi  NightWolve!

Yes, you're right, I've been around the forum for a long whiiiile, but I've been really busy with my side projects and my work, this is why I haven't been posting much these days... you're very welcome to use any screenshot from the website! Or any information you find there :)

About the paragraphs, do you think I should break down the game's descriptions into paragraphs for a better read? My website has evolved a lot throughout the years (I started a long time ago, around 2003 I think), so you're right, maybe I should edit parts of it. Please don't hesitate to send me more feedback, I'm always looking to improve things :)

Thanks again for your awesome feedback, I really appreciate it!

Yeah, I think what you're going for is the videogame magazine style, and a simple indentation would do the trick! You wouldn't need to double break either, just a break, indent, while maintaining the wrapping. I thought a blockquote does the trick, but it's actually a little bit more work than that with CSS to get the right look.

This HTML code does the trick of what I think would be better:
<style>
div {text-indent: 1em;}
</style>
<div>Darm's speeches, Feena and Lair's revelation (even though we all knew
it was coming), Goban's "YOU ANIMAL!" outburst, the playing of the silver
harmonica, Adol's sword beginning to glow as the music rocks more than it
ever had before, the bridge to the core of the structure being struck by lightning
and collapsing, Darm's promise to "crush and consume"... nope, I can't think of
a more amazing string of events. I was wide eyed all the way through it the
first time I beat the game.</div>
<div>The Belfry sequence was crazily intense the first time I experienced it.
Adol must charge up the steeple with urgent music cranked, bells ringing
ominously, and the threat of an ally's death looming large. Awaiting him at
the top is the despicable Dalles. The whole sequence is extremely exciting
and suspenseful.</div>

Which results in:

Quote
Darm's speeches, Feena and Lair's revelation (even though we all knew it was coming), Goban's "YOU ANIMAL!" outburst, the playing of the silver harmonica, Adol's sword beginning to glow as the music rocks more than it ever had before, the bridge to the core of the structure being struck by lightning and collapsing, Darm's promise to "crush and consume"... nope, I can't think of a more amazing string of events. Wrapping for the last sentence of the previous paragraph is maintained, one break, and minor indent, etc. That would help readability and I believe it's how columns are typically done in professional print (newspaper, magazine, etc.) although standards have changed nowadays quite a bit (we don't care about indent as much or double-spacing from a '.' to start the next sentence for example).
