@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Wow, I wasn't expecting that answer at all. My bad. I've never actually met anyone who is into that sort of thing, so...what's that like?

Quote from: galam on 12/04/2013, 04:17 PMFrankly, this place has been TAME lately.
I have a really bad memory, so I might have been around or I might have not, but this line really scares me. :P

I do remember posting a thread in Fighting Street once that basically asked why everyone was acting like assholes, and if I remember correctly (not likely), things actually got a little better after that, and we all had a good discussion about things.

The reason I posted this was because of 98pacecar's thread where he got reamed because of suspicion of being in it for the money. I was angry, and I may have overreacted, but I do find it disconcerting that we get so few new members who stay for the long term. I don't know if it was the recent untimely death of Sini that started it, but I've been really thinking about this a lot lately.

I also have had a lot of bad experiences in life of being considered an outsider or even a freak when entering a new social situation. Throughout my life, I have been constantly judged and criticized by others, some of it being my fault, some of it not, so I'm also very sensitive about these things.
#205
I am serious. Every time we get a new member, they are instantly viewed with suspicion without cause, and the moment they do one thing wrong, there is a snobby forum regular waiting to put them in their place. It sickens me.

Now, I understand that there are some jerks out there, people who just want to try to scam us, etc. However, acting like jerks ourselves is not going to stop that. What it DOES do though, is hinder us from getting new members.

We all make fun of other forums for being very hostile places, like neo-geo.com, but I think we behave in similar ways. We are a VERY hostile community, and it's going to hurt us in the long run.

Discuss.
#206
Jesus Christ, where in the rules of this forum does it say to be a TOTAL ASSHOLE to EVERY NEW MEMBER!? It's no wonder we have so few regulars when we viciously attack every person who even thinks about joining! ](*,)

All this guy did was say he loved shooters, and that he wanted to start collecting for the PCE. Even if he does have games he doesn't play every day, SO FUCKING WHAT? I have games I don't play too often either.

I'm really starting to get sick of this constant suspicion of all new members around here. It seems like if you're new around here, all you have to do is look at someone funny, and everyone starts acting like a pack of rabid dogs. You guys may be my friends, but you all can really act like turds sometimes.

Wow, thank you for coming here! I'm sure that any materials you can show us would be greatly appreciated by the other members who are programming for the system. :D

Oh, God...this is horrible. I don't even really know what to say, because really, what can I say that will help in any way?

I didn't know Sini very well, but I definitely saw him around here and I know he was a major member of the forum. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I hope he is now in a better place, where friends and happiness are plentiful and American copies of Magical Chase are free and abundant.

RIP Sini. You will be missed.

I checked out the manual archive, and noticed a couple things that bugged me.

According to the URL, the Final Lap Twin manual was credited to Bernie and not me. All the other manuals that I contributed are credited correctly.

Also, Ys 3 was NOT Ys 4 in Japan. (this isn't Final Fantasy, Esteban)

The next manual I will be scanning is the last one I originally promised, Lords of the Rising Sun. If I get any new games that have manuals yet to be scanned, I'll definitely scan them, of course. :)

If you plan on covering systems besides the Turbo (just a thought), here's some picks (all are available on romhacking.net):

-NES-

Adventure Island 4 (Translation) - The Adventure Island sequel that never made it to America, which funnily enough, takes a page from the Wonderboy sequels.

Battle Kid (Homebrew) - In my opinion, the best homebrew on the NES, and from what I've played, the only one that feels like a legit game for the system.

Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries (Castlevania 1 Hack) - One of the better Castlevania 1 hacks. It actually feels like a brand new game once you get past the first level.

Downtown Special (Translation) - River City Ransom's sequel that was never released overseas!

Extra Mario Bros. (SMB1 Hack) - Super Mario Bros 1 meets Metroid. Seriously.

Fire Emblem 1 (Translation) - It is what it says...

Mario Adventure (SMB3 Hack) - This is often considered the best hack of Super Mario Bros. 3.

The Portopia Serial Murder Case (Translation) - The famous (in Japan) adventure game made by Yuji Horii, before he made the even more famous (worldwide) Dragon Quest.

Silva Saga (Translation) - An RPG that's supposed to be pretty good.

Sweet Home (Translation) - A Survival Horror/RPG by Capcom that was the inspiration for Resident Evil.

Zelda Challenge: Outlands (Zelda 1 Hack) - One of the better Zelda 1 hacks, but very difficult.

-SNES-

Oh No! More Zombies Ate my Neighbors! (ZAMN Hack) - A well done fan-made semi-sequel to ZAMN.

Shin Megami Tensei (Translation) - A very sweet RPG where you recruit demons to join your party. Contains multiple endings. BE ABSOLUTELY SURE that you play the bug-fixed version.

Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (Translation) - Another sequel to River City Ransom that was never released overseas.

Starfox 2 (Translation) - The rumors are true!

-Genesis-

Gleylancer (Translation) - A shooter! With a STORY!

Langrisser 2 (Translation) - A Strategy RPG. The first in the series was released here as Warsong.

Sonic 1 Megamix (Sonic 1 Hack) - This is supposed to be quite excellent.

Streets of Rage 3 (Translation) - A translation of the Japanese version. Includes story and difficulty balancing that was cut out of the American version.

WARNING: POTENTIALLY UPSETTING POST AHEAD!

What's the point in believing in a God that just acts like a nanny-tyrant with a stick up his ass? I already have parents for that!

Political Correctness and being forced to conform to a culture's self-constructed idea of morality instead of common sense morality is for the f**king birds anyway.

One of the problems with organized religion in general is that every person has different needs, and a one-size-fits-all solution just doesn't work for that very reason. Imagine if we had religious law in America. Does a person being gay instantly make him a bad person? What about watching porn? Any person who says yes is hypnotized by religion and has no understanding of what it means to be a human being. And assuming the Christian God really does exist, I personally think based off of his taught commandments that he has no understanding of human beings either.

In my opinion, every good religion has some level of goodness and truth to it, but no religion is perfect. They're all put to paper and taught by human beings, who are all far from perfect after all.

I apologize if my post offends anyone. I'm just using my first-amendment rights while I still can.

Well, I looked up Validus' Captain Tsubasa 3 Spanish patch on romhacking.net. Not only does it exist, but it even says that the hacking was done by Validus. He didn't do the actual translation, other parties are credited, but Validus seems to have actually made some contributions to the translation community

Now, I know nothing about either romhacking or the Spanish language, but whether he did do the work or not isn't the main point here. The reason we have a problem with Validus is because of the fact that he has lied on this forum, and we do not trust him.

Validus, you seem to be desperate to be accepted here, so I'm going to try to be nice, but firm.

A major issue here is the fact that you have been caught lying and breaking the forum rules on multiple occasions. If you stop doing these things, answer our questions honestly, and stop trying to sneak onto this board after being banned, we might trust you more

I have some questions I'd like answered as well.

1. Why did you tell us you were involved in the Legend of Xanadu 2 translation when you clearly have no part in it? Remember, we have a link to a post made by you where you said that you were involved in, if not leading the effort, so lying won't do you any good.

2. Why do you keep breaking forum rules by trying to sneak in after you've been banned multiple times?

3. Why do you keep telling all these hard to believe stories without backing them up with evidence?

Answer these questions honestly, and I will have more respect for you. I cannot speak for anyone else here. We tend to be a little hard on each other, and even suspicious of new members in general. This is due (from what I understand) to much disappointment from the many people who join our forum only to cause trouble, usually by trying to immediately sell games at ridiculous prices. Because of this, we have a very hardcore "no bullshit" approach around here.

We also tend to poke fun at each other a lot, hence our riding you for not being able to zip a file. We're probably being a little unfair. I remember it took me forever to figure out how to make folders. (You may all snicker quietly to yourselves now.)

Validus, you didn't need to prove yourself to be accepted here. All you need to do is follow the rules of both this forum and standard conversation etiquette. Lord, I've been here for years and my big accomplishments are scanning a few manuals and playing a few small voice acting roles for fan translations. The reason I've never been banned is because I tell the truth, follow the rules to the best of my ability, am generally respectful to other members, and love the PCE/Turbo with a passion that while strong, doesn't overwhelm me to the point where I NEED to be a part of things.

Just do that! Hell, if you treat us with respect, and not like fools who can't tell the difference when you sneakily change your username, we might just change our tune about you. No promises, but it's a possibility.

This is the inevitable counterpoint thread to SuperDeadite's biased and hateful opinion.

Here we discuss why Kickstarter is such a boon to those with skill and talent, but no money, and how it has helped get projects we love (like new games in our cult favorite franchises) off the ground without giving them away to evil money-grubbing corporations (like EA).

It used to be that the only way for a small developer to get their products to fans was to get one of those big publishers who don't give a fuck to distribute it for them, and in most cases, said publishers would twist their vision to make it "marketable to a demographic" or some shit, and in the process completely destroy what made their idea great in the first place.

Now that we have Kickstarter and other such avenues, small developers are no longer slaves to the big bad publishers, and have made fans' dreams come true with things like Wasteland 2, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, and many others.

If it weren't for Kickstarter, these developers would have no way to fight against EA and other such large companies. While there will always be a horror story here and there, it is the great successes that should have our attention.

Please discuss.

Thirded! Guardian Legend is excellent, and yet quite underrated. Definitely worth your time if you like Zelda style games and shooters, and this is possibly the only game ever to mix the two.

It's also made by Compile. Everyone loves Compile. If you don't love Compile, you have no soul.

#226
Sign me up! The Bubble Bobble series is awesome, and I don't have this game. =P~
#227
This is a tough one, so I'm going to break it down.

Gameplay

Both games have their strengths and weaknesses. Let's take a look at the two main areas both series have in common, combat and puzzle-solving.

In combat, Zelda wins, hands down. There is just something more satisfying about actually swinging a sword at just the right time while dodging an enemy's attacks, and the options to switch things up by using a lot of different pieces of equipment, like an ice beam or a hookshot, some of which are actually required to defeat certain enemies (albeit usually just bosses).

There's a reason Ys eventually started copying this idea to an extent, and that's because combat in the early Ys games, with the exception of certain bosses, was really quite boring once the novelty of the combat system wore off. There's no variety. It's almost completely stat based. Once you discover that you can attack off-center without consequence, that's about it as far as strategy is concerned, except for bosses. In most cases, if you can't beat the enemies, you just go back to the previous area and grind until you can. Most enemies are a joke if you've leveled properly, because once you hit them, they sort of get stun-locked and you can just blitz them until they die. The Fire Spell doesn't help, because again, there's no strategy with normal enemies, just fire until dead. Now, if I recall correctly, there's a couple enemies that are fire-resistant, but they are VERY rare. You also usually have so much MP that it becomes easy to exploit fire magic on the majority of enemies that can be killed with it. Combat in the early Ys games is almost always braindead simple.

Zelda also wins as far as puzzles go. The puzzles in Zelda are intriguing, hard to figure out at first, but once you know the secret, it usually seems obvious in retrospect. And while a lot of the puzzles fall into the trap of 'use most recently obtained item here', in most cases, new surprises are rampant, keeping the player on their toes.

The puzzles in Ys, by comparison, are generally simple roadblocks opened with key items. In most cases, what you have to do is more obvious than in Zelda. Most items are only used once or twice in Ys, whereas most items in Zelda usually have many uses throughout the rest of the game. There are a few REALLY clever ideas in Ys, like turning into a monster and speaking to them, which are so brilliant and well-executed that it makes you want to cheer, but those moments are few in quantity.

In general, Zelda wins in the gameplay department. Ys has its clever moments and unique ways of doing things, but Zelda's gameplay is much more refined and intelligent.

Presentation

Both Link to the Past and Ys I & II have graphics that are serviceable, but usually not feasts for the eyes. Ys edges Zelda out due to the advantages of CD hardware, though. The cutscenes in Ys are great feasts for the eyes, and every dungeon looks different. Zelda has...text monologues, and most of the dungeons, if not all of them, use the same tileset with a different palette, and perhaps a few unique elements here and there. Later Zelda games would fix these problems, but here, the limits of the SNES, and cartridge games as a whole, really show.

Audio is a very similar story. Both games have impressive soundtracks, but Ys wins due its CD advantages. Almost every area has a unique music track, and there is not one bad track among them. Zelda has excellent music as well, but less of it. There is a song for the light world dungeons, and one for the dark world dungeons. Both are...OK. Neither ranks among the better songs in the game, which is a problem because the dungeons are where you'll be spending most of your time. Ys also has the 'wow factor' of competent voice acting. Zelda only has text.

Story

In this category, Ys blows Zelda out of the water. In fact, it blows the modern Zelda games out of the water! Every Zelda game has followed the exact same template. You always know what to generally expect. And this template wasn't that interesting to begin with. It basically boils down to saving the land by collecting mystic artifacts.

Ys I falls into the mystic artifact trap too, with the collecting of the Books of Ys, but it still had a dynamic plot compared to Zelda. You were always learning more about what was going on. It set up mysteries early on that were eventually solved. Where did all the silver go? Who is the man in the black cape? Is he the mastermind behind the monsters? Just what DID happen to Ys? It is this mystery that keeps the plot of Ys alive, whereas Zelda's plot is secondary to the action. Ys also has an emotion to the plot that Zelda is lacking. The characters in Ys are drivers of the plot and its impact, whereas Zelda's characters rarely move beyond stereotypes and givers of side-quests. The plot of Ys is also just plain original even to this day, whereas in Zelda's plot every game feels like a retread.

Replay Value

I have only played Link to the Past all the way through once. I have played Ys I & II multiple times, in both the Turbo version and the Eternal/Complete/Chronicles version. While later Zelda games were much better at adding things to keep you playing even after completing the game proper, LttP doesn't have much to say once you've beaten it. There are a few easter eggs and hidden items, but the game itself is such a long, hard haul that I've never really desired to go back to it in earnest. Ys has that special something, that perfect combination of elements that can't be explained, that really makes you want to experience it over and over, even though you're just playing through the same game again. It doesn't make logical sense, but Ys wins here.

Overall Impression

Let's face it, while LttP was a great game for its time, it hasn't aged as well as Ys in many ways. The story is trite, cliched, and formulaic. The dungeons are monotonous in their graphics and sound. In retrospect, it's just another Zelda game. It's not bad, but later games in the series have surpassed it to the point where it's not worth playing today.

The reason Ys stands the test of time so much better is something that I cannot fully explain, but it has to do with being more than the sum of its parts, and almost every part is well crafted. Even though LttP has "better" gameplay, it feels like much more of a slog to play through today than Ys. There's something about Ys that just makes it stand apart even today.

Ys wins.

Hell, yes! King's Quest, and most of the other Sierra adventures, were awesome. KQ was one of my earliest memories of gaming, and I still have a love of point and click adventures to this day because of it. Ah, the memories...

By the way, if you haven't seen it, I HIGHLY recommend Paw's Let's Play of King's Quest 5. It is without a doubt the most hilarious look at that game that I've seen:

I'm not really angry. I'm just getting into the Fighting Street spirit!

Last night, I won an ebay auction for a copy of Keith Courage! It was CIC with the comic. I tried to get Neutopia, but I didn't have enough money to up my bid. This was my second choice. :P

Sorry, vestcunt. You're wrong. Thanks for calling me an asshole just for being interested in playing good games I didn't have back in the day on genuine hardware, though. Silly me for owning a Genesis back in the day! I should've known better that SNES games would have their prices jacked up so high. I'll be sure to pass on to anyone complaining about how expensive Turbo games are that they're being assholes, and that they should be grateful that Magical Chase only costs as much as it does.

Hey, that's a pretty nice start! Everything seems to be running smoothly.

Keep up the good work!

Holy crap, those videos are epic! The John Madden one especially made me laugh. Great discoveries, Joshua! I've subscribed to your channel.

By the way, what the heck is up with John Madden himself on the title screen? He looks like he's trying to dance but doesn't know how. I know it's supposed to be him commentating, but that animation...wow.

Thanks! PM me your address, and I'll try to get it shipped out soon. :D

Hi, Turbokon. I'm sorry, I'd forgotten it was you who did my mod. For some reason, I was thinking it was Nat, who has since left the forum. Yes, it's a push button switch. Could you please help me?

I don't have much money available at the moment, due to needing it to get a ColecoVision fixed up this next month (the guy who does this is permanently ceasing his services this December), but I'd really appreciate it if you could help me and do whatever you can to get my Duo into shape. Please?

So last night, I brought my Duo-RX to a gaming party to show it off, only to discover that HuCards were not booting up. This is not the first time this has happened. Ever since I got the system region modded by a member of these forums who has since left, I have occasionally found the wires coming loose, forcing me to have to re-solder them. The inside of my Duo is a mess of wires leading to this contraption that is my region mod, which makes re-soldering extremely difficult. (I had it done not long before the region mod chips started coming out.)

Well, I've had enough. I want a region mod upgrade. I don't care what it takes; I need help. I want the old region mod in my system removed and replaced with a new one that will work better and not break all the time.

Can anyone help me? [-o<

Quote from: Mathius on 10/21/2013, 10:48 PMI love Earthbound. Great atmosphere and music. Too bad collectors have killed the game's original reputations and forced it into the spotlight.
You know what? Fuck "rare" game collectors/resellers in general! They are leaches, preying on our nostalgia and gullibility, forcing us to pay multiple times what a game is worth, just so we can have a little fun with a system. They hype certain systems that they know will get people's hearts and/or greed racing, just so they have an excuse to sell their "rare" stuff at arm-and-leg prices. They cheat people, sometimes with fakes, even! Sometimes, I look for a game I'm interested in on eBay, and I just want to slap those motherfuckers in the face the game is so overpriced.

Then, idiots who also have the game think it's really worth that much and try to get some money too, and before you know it, the game is "rare" and worth hundreds of dollars, not because it really is rare, but because it costs a stupid amount to get, because these little shits are trying to get rich off of our love of gaming. These people need to burn in hell for their greed.
