2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

3-4 years ago was a long, long time ago in this hobby, the whole retro gaming thing has gone a bit crazy price wise hasn't it. (I've given up owning so many games :( )

Looking at YAJ, theres a core 2 about to go, £40...a 'Junk' White PCE about to go £20. Factor in shipping £15, a controller say £10, decent PSU £10 ....then you will probably get stung for customs/VAT, you could be looking at £50+ easy. Then you wanna sell that on ebay? They take 10% straight off the bat and then paypal fees...

Realistically you are going to see PCE for about £60-100 on ebay especially if they've been cleaned up and RGB modded totting up the cost this probably isn't unfair. Your best bet is FB groups or other forums, I've seen PCE pop up on UKVAC for reasonable prices recently, maybe look at shmups forum too. http://from-japan-retro-sale.myshopify.com offers free shipping from japan.

I guess theres a finite supply in the UK, also Ebay being a rip off for sellers it probably isn't worth it. I went the YAJ route but maybe try hitting up Allan McCluskey on Facebook (Allan's retro games sales). He also does a lot of the uk retro games shows.

Out of curiosity what do you reckon is a reasonable price now days?

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB:Duo R Cd eject button
09/23/2018, 08:32 AM
Hi all, bit of a long shot but i damaged my cd button while cleaning does anyone know where I can get a replacement or does anyone have a spare they would be willing to part with?

Thanks!

well I just wanted it to sync with the framemeister, after further reading I realise the LM1881 is probably overkill, not 100% what to do though.
#5
Ok thanks for the help all, got it working :)

Made a a synch stripper and it worked. Like I said though I've never had to use one of these circuits on a pc engine before, are there composite variances from machine to machine? I thought it might be due to the psu but that doesn't seem to be the case as I tried an official one as well.
#6
Bad laser? Try a new HOP M3 maybe?
#7
interesting this could do the job I'll give it a try thanks!

I was thinking of making a LM1881 sync stripper circuit to see if that helps, though I've never needed to do that with Duo R before.

Edit: Tried a 220uf on the comp line didnt seem to make any difference though :/
#8
Oh that's good to hear NichlasEk, thanks.

I have to say this is baffling me. Ok so I've made two amps both work fine on 2 different Duo-R when plugged in to a CRT but when you plug them in to an LCD or via a framemeiester, nothing. I tried the amps on a working Duo and they both worked on the framemeister, I took the working amp from the Duo and put it in an R and nothing again. Same tv same scart.

I reseated the DIN8, but no go. I  checked via composite, works fine on the framemeister. When I turn off synch I get a jittery picture so it must be something to do with comp sync?

Failing that it could be the scart lead but that works fine on the Duo with the new amps....undoubtedly it's going to be something stupid and I'll be back looking like a fool :)
#9
Hmm weird, so I built a another amp and  put it in an original white PCE. On the CRT it works but it looks a bit over blown and theres weird black shadowing on some elements. Tried it on the Frameister no picture at all, no input, I bridged R10 so it was getting 5v out to see if that would make difference but I just got a black screen. Really odd.
#10
Thanks for the reply. Euro scart, it's all wired up correctly works ok on a duo I have.

Looking at the data sheet for the THS is shows a 75ohm on the output but these boards have a 91 out  and a 470 to ground, would that make a difference?
#11
Hi all, I'm having a bit on an issue with some amps I put together via oshpark. Everything seems to work on a CRT and straight in to a scart input on a LCD but the framemeister just displays a black screen.

The amp:

I've used ths7314/6 based amps before with out any issue I wonder what the problem could be?
#12
Nice find :) I've had a few Duo-R over the years they've all been solid only issues I've had have surrounded cd reading, if you have any issues just search these awesome forums for the cd pot adjustment thread .

Hi all, so I need to replace the CXA1082BQ in my Duo so i removed the original this morning but managed to lift a pad grrr.

It's pin 21 (DIRC in the schematics) it doesn't seem to go anywhere though, is that right?

Thanks for the help!

This lcd driver board has popped up via the shmups forums:

https://www.kadenken.com/shopdetail/000000000499/

Could this be used on an rgb modded GT do you think? That would be really cool

There does seem to be a bit of skullduggery surrounding McWills game gear lcd though:

Hi you've probably sourced them by now but for posterity, I know a lot of people use console5, shipping to the uk makes it a bit pricey, I tend to just buy them individually from CPC farnell. It's not that much of a faff it only takes 10 mins to find them all.
#16
Hi Keith, yeah I have a spare broken duo I've take the catch and the magnet out of that but that's next on my to fix pile it would be a shame for it to be missing that piece.

Thanks for the offer of a magnet, I wonder if it would be possible to 3d print the magnet clip/bracket..hmm
#17
Hi everyone, I just picked up a Duo R that was a little bit worse for wear, I've managed to fix it up but it's missing the CD lid magnet and clip  ](*,)

Is there any where in the world I can source one of these without having to cannibalise another PCE?

Thanks!

Console Repair/Mod Center / DIN 8
08/17/2013, 01:14 PM
Hi all, Does anyone know where to get a DIN 8 that will fit in to the DUO-R without having to drill through the board? Just feels wrong to do that.

Incidentally when it comes to drilling a poor PCE Duo is there a preferred option. Drill through the main board or mount a socket on the case?
#20
No worries. I've got a doujindance duo-r as well :) The man does lovely work I hope you enjoy it!
#21
Hey rtyper, I'm in the UK too unfortunately I don't know anyone personally. I did my own Duo and am about to do my other Duo-R not sure I would be comfortable doing someone elses, would hate to break it. It could be worth shooting an email off to retro gaming cables or genkivideogames they might know someone.

The actual soldering is quite trivial if you take your time, the most annoying thing is finding a Din8 that fits and piecing the rgb amp together. Though I might be able to help with that if you decide to go the DIY route.
#22
Cheers Keith you were right on the money with the VR102 Pot a small turn to the left and the drive is having no troubles.
#23
Thanks for the reply Keith, I think you could be right. I cleaned the laser last night made sure the disc wasn't catching anything, bit of lithium grease etc. The laser seems to struggle on some discs so I'll have a go with the pot tonight.
#24
All originals.
#25
Sorry to hi jack the thread but I got another duo-r yesterday with a similar issue it does play discs 90% of the time but the drive makes a clicking sound on start up. Worth trying the lens gain pot?

Edit: Oops hah just saw a similar thread a bit further down, to eager :)
#26
Thanks for the reply fraggore. I added a resister to 8-16, everything else seems the same.

It's really weird I get the pc engine home screen but no hucard will load (white screen) where as as soon as I pop in the composite lead they will run. I tried some cd's and bizarrely almost none of them will load apart from gradius 2?!? The picture is ok except i have some white dotted lines on an angle across the screen.
#27
I've tested the RGB wires with a multimeter and Im getting a fluctuating readout from each channel. I'm just using a bog standard TV with scart input, I added an 8 pin din to the PCE. If i just have the 5 original pins wired up to the scart connector sans RGB it works fine with composite video.
#28
Hello again all.

I'm having a strange issue with my RGB mod.

I've wired up the RGB pins  and just connected them to the DIN for now just to test, I was going to add a amp later but I'm getting a white screen when I try and load a HuCard.

When I switch the machine on with no game I get a the main screen but with a fuzzy picture and some moving video noise.

When I go back to composite everything works without a hitch.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers
#29
Ended up getting creative with a glue gun and a scalpel :P It's not pretty but it will work until I manage to find a better socket.
#30
No unfortunately I've managed to pick up a din with pins in all the wrong places.
#31
Does anyone know where I can get a suitable DIN8 socket in the UK?
#32
Hi All thanks for all the great advice, a somewhat belated reply  I was busy playing on the system I put the RGB mod on the back burner.
I ended up buying a better solder sucker (one of those big plastic ones, toolcraft ezd) and some flux, it worked a treat just took some patience.
Unfortunately It seems I don't have the right kind of DIN8 the pins are in the wrong place, so I need to track one of those down now.
#33
I'm trying to replace the din 5 with a din 8 for the rgb mod. Your probably right about using a hotter iron, I've just been reluctant to use one in case I lift a trace or pad.

I was hoping it could be the sucker, a new solder sucker is cheaper than a new iron :)

Console Repair/Mod Center / DIN removal
06/06/2012, 01:55 PM
Hi All, this may seem very trivial but can anyone give me some tips?

I've just replaced all the caps on my duo but i'm struggling on something that should be simple. I'm just not getting the solder up from the points connecting the a/v din, i've tried with a 15 and a 30 watt iron but to no avail, I guess my solder sucker may be crap (more likely my technique!) are there any tips/tricks ? Cheers.
#35
I just want to say hello and thanks to Red Ghost/toofastforyahuh and everyone in this thread what a life saver. I now have fully working cd audio and no more popping!

Unfortunately though two of the caps near the headphone opamp leaked all over the board and made a hell of a mess. Messing up a trace/pad and destroying the volume knob (all rusty and gunky now) so off to find a new one of those and then on to rgb mod !

Cheers guys.
