Even beyond Political Correctness, the thing that drives me nuts are the people that preach tolerance when they themselves are extremely intolerant of anything. In America right now it looks like this from what I observe:

Be tolerant of all races - Unless they are white

Be tolerant of all religions - Unless they are Christian

Be tolerant of all sexual preferences - Unless they aren't gay. No offence to anyone that is gay, I couldn't give two shits who you are fucking, but don't try to force the issue on people. There seems to be an a growing air in the US right now that if you aren't gay it's just because you haven't tried it. Why in the world do some want only one dimension of their personality to define them? I just don't get the need to run around and advertise who you're sticking it to and base everything about who you are on that one thing...

Be tolerant of all political ideologies - Unless they are conservative in any way

Don't be tolerant of gun ownership - Unless the government is the one with the guns. Don't even get me started with the mess that is...

Don't be tolerant of murder - Unless it's an infant.... Just go ahead and look at some pictures of late term abortions and tell me that's not a fucking person... makes me fucking sick. And yet the types of people that I run into that are super pro-abortion tend also to be very anti death penalty for violent criminals....I just can't wrap my head around the idea that a fucking BABY is more ok to exterminate like a fucking roach hiding in your kitchen than a hardened murderer or rapist serving life in prison sucking the tax payer dry. Give then their day in court, a few appeals and then when they fail, take them out behind the courthouse and put a fucking .45 slug in the back of their skull. The baby you should give every chance to live....

This was never really on my radar and then today I saw the review:

I'll certainly be watching development of this.

I'll have to really think about some of the swaps since the only one I can think of right now is swapping Victory Run for Outrun since that had an arcade presence in the US so would be recognized.

I think that one of the HUGE failings of NEC early on was changing the box art of the games. They should have taken the EXACT same art of the Japanese release in 99% of cases and just translated the text. In the store sitting next to Genesis games at the time the box art looked WAY too goofy for your average uninformed consumer, and they gravitated towards the cooler box art of the Genesis. If it weren't for that I think that the novelty of HuCards and CDs would have turned more heads because let's face it, those chips and CDs were some fucking high tech looking shit at the time.

Got my TG16 in 1989, which is all I wanted for xmas that year. Screw that Genesis nonsense, I KNEW the Turbo was THE system

My parents skrimped and saved and I got a TG-CD the next xmas, which was one of the best xmas mornings ever. I never owned any of the other systems of that time because to me they were all inferior, and why waste the money?

VGA grading is fucking stupid and over inflates anything related to whatever shows up sealed on ebay.

Whoever is doing this shit should be dick-stompped repeatedly.

This is great, I'm always looking for chip tune and other TG music, so I'll surely be downloading quite a bit from this site.

Quote from: guest on 01/07/2013, 12:59 PMMy grandpa laughs at our prison system:

"Those stupid motherfuckers just go in there and lift weights and get bigger and come out and do the same stupid shit, but better!  If I were the prison warden I'd walk around with a revolver and shoot all those worthless motherfuckers in the head if they got out of line.  There'd be no electricity.  No plumbing.  No showers.   You'd drink dirty water and eat stale bread and like it.   If you don't like it, tough shit.  You're the dumb motherfucker that ended up in prison."
Apparently me and your grandpa think the same LOL.

I think prison should be the most ultimate stretch of soul crushing existence that any of these fucks has to go through. Prison should be so bad that you'd do anything to not go back...though you hear liberals constantly talk about how "Well if they'll do anything to avoid going back that means more violence!!" Fucking idiots, that's why the 2nd time the cops should just shoot the fucks dead....

Quote from: guest on 12/28/2012, 11:17 AMThe schools around here already have police at them.   There are two on duty so one can take a piss, etc.

Schools in the shittier parts of town have metal detectors already.   This includes elementary schools.

I'd happily pay a tax increase if it meant preventing 5 year olds from having their shit sprayed all over a kindergarten wall.

Blaming video games is retarded though.  This shit, and worse, happened before the video part of video games even existed.

Some people are just fucked up.  Heck, even after video games (Virginia Tech), they still weren't the root cause.  That dude didn't even play games.

Background checks won't help in cases where the kid steals his parents shit and goes on a killing spree.

They need to start making examples out of all the dipshits doing dumb shit out there.  If you blow people away, you shouldn't get to play cards and lift weights and shit in prison.  Your food should be bitter goop that they force feed you through a tube.   Enough to keep you alive, and that's it.

You should dangle upside down from a tree every day for the rest of your life.  If you have to piss/shit, you're all set.  Just close your mouth.   You can get hosed off every day with a fire hose.   If you don't like it, tough shit.  Should've thought about that before you killed people.

That's the real problem.  Our justice system is basically some tree hugging douche nonsense.  and then the criminals plead insanity/depression and get special treatment or get off on some technicality.

What we need is some judges.   FUCK YEAH.
This exactly. Punishment for crimes should be swift and brutal. Prison should be a deterant for everyone, not some fucking holiday where you can fuck around on the tax payer's dime and get ripped lifting weights and get free food, medical etc.

If you are convicted of a violent crime (murder, rape, child molestation) you should get your 3 tries, a trial and 2 appeals, after that they take you out behind the courthouse and put a fucking .45 slug into the back of your head. No fuss, no muss and bullets are cheap compared to some shit-dick spending his entire life in prison.

Most of this stems from liberal bullshit nonsense that they think people can change and be better, but they are all SHOCKED when someone gets out and rapes, murders or especially in the cases of child molestors, they victimize another kid. SHOCKED! What are you fucking stupid?!

Got mine a few weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Soon though.

How does one go about overclocking one of these older systems like a Genesis or TG? I've been overclocking PCs ever since a viable BIOS in a system allowed it, and tend to also heatsink or watercool in some fashion everything in a PC. I've always wondered if heatsinking and cooling older systems would have any benefit at all.

Also would OCing something like a Genesis make all the games run faster, such that the audio is all weird too?
#66
I have an Ave6 on the fritz as well, but I'm willing to guess that it's my original recabling work from about 12 years ago that needs to be redone and cleaned up. Hope you can find a good price on a new pad, or replace the chip.
#67
Just wanted to check in on the status of the shipping. No particular rush on my part, but just want to make sure that if I'm expecting something I'll actually check the mail.
#68
Still love me some Splatterhouse. I remember buying the game with my own cash back in the day, cost me $60 in 1990 money (!!) and beat it in 3 days. While I was stoked that I beat it, immediately after that was the feeling of "Fuck, I just paid $60 for 3 days of gameplay...)

Either way still a must have in the Turbo collection IMO.
#69
I know from reading the repair threads here that 1st gen Duos do seem to have cap problems, but that's a relatively simple/inexpensive fix if you can find one for a good price.

As far as the TGCD, not sure it totally deserves a rep for breaking down, but I may just be lucky that mine has logged probably 1000s of hours and been running since 1990.

Off-Topic / Re: Windows 8
10/29/2012, 05:54 PM
Installed it on my home gaming machine this weekend. Performance is good, games run great, but most of my time was spent trying to replicate the Win7 experience. The switch between Metro and Desktop is very disjointed feeling and doesn't flow well. I could see the OS being good for a tablet, but for a PC Metro just doesn't work well IMO.

I may keep it installed to get the performance benefits, but tailor it as much as possible to maintain the look of Win7.

I will install on my wife's machine too. Since she generally logs in and launches only LOTRO, GW2 or Diablo 3, the metro UI may be ok for her. The fact that you can't easily set your own Start background with a picture will annoy her though I'm sure LOL.
#71
Love me some Herzog Zwei. Why this is not on current gen consoles with more multiplayer I have no clue!

Just make is something like Herzog Acht, and have 8 player simultaneous over the internet on like Xbox and PS3... Who cares that the number is not a direct sequal of Zwei!
#72
Awesome! Shadowgate is one of my all time favorite games, and I'd love to play a new version. I may have to actually throw some funds at this Kickstarter.

I'd also love to see a remake of Beyond Shadowgate with their original ideas and design as well.

Currently I have:

PS3
Turbo Grafx 16 with Turbo CD

Because let's face it, why do you need anything else after you have a turbo?

PS3- Finished Episode 4 of The Walking Dead last night. I've liked the games so far, can't wait for the finale with ep. 5.

Quote from: fragmare on 10/25/2012, 08:23 PMThe music for the first Wily's Castle level is quite possibly the most spine tinglingly nostalgia inducing 8-bit music track ever created:
I can listen to that track over and over, such a good tune.

A debate that friends and I have had about game music is how as the music got better in games over time (subjective I know) it has lost something, feels almost soul-less while the older 8 and 16 bit stuff is just awesome and inspiring. Early CD games also have that quality I think, I can easily conjure up tunes from 8 and 16bit games in my head, as well as music from games like Ys I&II, while a modern game I couldn't tell you what the music sounds like at all to be quite frank.
#77
Have I mentioned that I hate you yet?  :P

I check Craigslist all the time around here and the best lead I've seen so far is some asshat that wants to sell a US Duo and a Duo-R with no controllers for $1000
#78
Sorry to revive this thread, but would any ol' 10k ohm resistor work in this position?
#79
Is it just caps that power the IC for RAM saves? I've never looked in the Duo and always assumed there was a CMOS type battery that did this. Though the cap thing makes more sense, as you can leave a Turbo powered off long enough and everything is lost.

I was already quite the gamer by the time that the Turbo came around. Started playing Atari 2600 at around 3 years old (system released the same year and month I was born), my Dad got a NES for Christmas the year it came out, and I loved most of the games that I played on that system.

I remember seeing the Turbo Grafx and PC Engine in game magazines back in 1988/89 if I remember correctly. I was instantly hooked. When you looked at the tech specs as well, it just seemed like the better system, more on screen colors, for one was a big selling point during the 16 bit era as I recall. The TurboChip tech was mind blowing and cool, and overall I just liked the "vibe" that I got from the system.

I remember seeing the systems and the games at the Fred Meyer is Marysville, WA and also at the Toys R Us in Everett, WA and just drooling over it. The Genesis, while a good system, was instantly on my shit-list. There was NO WAY it could compare to the Turbo!! I also love the fact that it was the underdog, but I was sure there was no way it could lose once they started importing all those awesome games from Japan! *sigh* I defended the Turbo rabidly to all nay sayers. I was ecstatic the year I got one for Christmas in 1989. Couldn't put it down and saved up all my money to buy games. I'd put things on layaway and pay over time if needed.

Then in 1990 I got the TG-CD. This was a shock because of the price and the fact being a military famliy, we didn't exactly have a ton of cash, but since my Dad was always into new tech, and had a shitty childhood, he always went all out at Christmas for us. I remember getting Sherlock Holmes and Ys Book I&II with the unit...best Christmas ever! Best part was also that I could go to all my Genesis playing friends and was like "What now bitches!! Look at this CD amazeballs shit!!! Ys, motherfuckers!!!!" (Or something similar to that LOL).

With that I was confident that I had just won the console war.
#81
I don't mind the wait so much, I've got so much stuff to play between PC games, PS3 and MMOs that I probably won't get to MS right away. It'll just be a pleasant surprise one day when it shows up in the mail.
#82
Sounds like a plan, looks like Amazon has one for about $80 right now.

http://www.amazon.com/Hakko-Soldering-Station-FX-888-65W/dp/B004M3U0VU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350951933&sr=8-1&keywords=hakko+fx-888

I'll probably get one of these in the near future and slowly get back into soldering and start modding my systems. Thanks for the replies!
#83
Can anyone that does mods frequently recommend a good soldering iron or station? I don't have my station any more, and just based on of the needs for Turbo repair and mods I'd like to see what people are using these days.
#84
Wow, I'm glad I still have my original one, sounds like the prices are insane to get one of these. I hope that anyone that needs one is able to get it eventually.
#85
I'll be glad to when I get my copy, sounds like a fun game to me, and I'm sure a launching pad for more homebrew goodness.
#86
I'm fine with $13 to get the look that I want, and I believe that most DIN to SCART cables are full size DIN and not Mini, unless I am mistaken.

Now I just need to get hot on getting some new soldering supplies, and the things that I need for my mods.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of some nice compact 8PDT switches, or a minimally intrusive way to add the region mod? I know I could search the forums, but I'm being lazy
#87
Where can I find that Amphenol type?

I'm also considering doing the mod to my base TG16, mounting the DIN where the RF is now, as well as mounting a region switch there where the Ch 3 4 switch is now.

Probably also going to do the logo light mod soon.
#88
Yeah I've lost saves over time, usually frustrating to say the least.

That being said you might as well finish playing Shape Shifter, I always liked that game.
#89
Yeah I heard that there's not a lot of space near the AV jacks in the back, though if I had my wishes, that's where I'd put it. I can't see the pic that was posted, but I'd like to see the placement and can assess later if my skills are up to snuff to put it there without making a mess of my system.
#90
So, as someone with experience with this mod, can you rate it for difficulty?

Also, tell me if this approach makes sense please:

I was going to purchase a cable from a place like http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk (I talked to them last year and said they could provide a DIN8 to SCART cable) that would have the amp built into the SCART connector, as well as the DIN8 port to mount in the system.

I'd mount the DIN8 in the "wing" section of the CD base (not sure how I'd mound it exactly, maybe some industrial adhesive?) and then tap the expansion bus in the CD base, run wires to the DIN and solder it all up. I'd also tap the RCA jacks for sound (per your suggestion, thanks!!) and have the SCART pass audio as well.

After that I'd get a SCART to Component or HDMI converter. Unfortunately, while I do have a great retro monitor, I have no place that I'd be "allowed" to keep it in the house (wife still doesn't "get" my retro hobby LOL). I know that it won't look great on my LCD TV, but I imagine that RGB will at least make the color and lines better.

Eventually (while kind of insane) I'll probably save some cash up for an XRGB3 or an XRGB-Mini Framemeister to properly upscale the RGB signal.
#91
How was the DIN port you used on the mod attached to the system board?
#92
Quote from: Sadler on 10/03/2012, 10:42 PM:D Socially liberal, fiscally conservative. I don't know why this is such a foreign concept to people. To clarify—I don't give a fuck if you want to get high on coke while banging a hooker at the craps table on your way to buy a fully automatic M4 to shoot in celebration of your gay wedding. Don't ask me to pay for it though.
That's what I'm talking about, we spend too much time and effort stopping people from doing things that really have no effect, but spend money like it's monopoly dollars. I really don't give a shit what people do as long as they aren't hurting others and spending my fucking money! :)
#93
Still a proud member. Ebay prices are fucking stupid these days. Local ads don't come up with much either, so probably time to hit up a couple local game shops on my lunch breaks to see what's up.
#94
Never knew about this site. Just registered and added to my collection.
#95
Seems like Ys III has jumped quite a bit recently too. I'd love to get a copy before playing the translated Ys 4, but at the prices on ebay, and no leads locally for good TG stuff, I may just have to grab a ROM and play it that way. I wish I'd bought more stuff years ago when it was cheaper, but then again I had a lot less money a few years ago too, catch 22 I suppose.
#96
Does anyone know if the PC Engine mouse works in any games? I've always wondered if games like Loom would actually recognize the mouse.
#97
Reading fail on my part apparently!
#98
Sanity check:

Would it be possible to tap the RGB from the expansion bus, amplify it and install component jacks directly in the system? Perhaps there would be another circuit needed for that. I've read a lot of the RBG stuff over the years, but am always wary about starting the project for fear of really messing up my system accidentally LOL.
#99
Nice work. Those walk throughs will come in handy for people that are modding in the future.

I need to finally get around to getting some work done on my systems. I don't have the time to do the modifications, but maybe a few simple ones at a time would be a start. I've been mulling over having someone on the boards do some of the mods, but combined with the fact that I know how to solder and work on electronics and the resistance to sending my original systems from 1989 and 1990 via mail has been preventing me from doing so I think LOL.
