Title: That TV Series You're Watching
Post by: Medic_wheat on 06/22/2014, 08:38 PM
Lets talk about tv shows in general...anyone become popular enough "game of thrones" can divergent to its own thread where the viewers can discuesss it openly.

Rules:

If you are watching a tv show based on a book or comic please don't spoil it by refferancing the source material to ruin what is to come in the tv show.

For tv shows based off movies: Fargo, Hannibal, bates motel I feel it is fair game..

I mean he'll they seem to base these shows on movies what have been out so long it is your own fault for not watching the movie before watching the show.

Currently I am watching: orange is the new black, the 100, big bang theory, 2 broke girls, bates motel, game of thrones, star wars clone wars (still making my way through season 3), and I was enjoying too human but that got killed off sigh  :-({|=

I am going to rematch orange is the new black before starting season two as my wife never saw it and wants to get into it.

Been watching the original animated series for RoboCop, maybe someday they'll properly release Alpha Commando as well.

Finished Fargo last night. That was quite enjoyable. Not perfect, but certainly worthy of some hugs.

I've re watched nearly all of the original Star Trek episodes with my daughter. I haven't seen these in 25+ years. It's funny how I clearly remember certain aspects of an episode, but have absolutely no recollection of the remaining 80-90%.

Curb Your Enthusiasm. I rarely had HBO, so I had only seen a scattering of episodes, mostly from first few seasons. I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I love it.

Currently my wife and I are in season 4 of Breaking Bad. I just caught up on Game of Thrones myself. Beyond that I'm not watching much else unless it's Baseball.

Same here, except on Hulu.  My wife & I fought getting into it for several years, kept hearing how cool it was, but I really felt like I wanted to start allllllllllllllllllllllllll the way back at the beginning with Doctor #1, rather then with 9.  Glad I didn't start the original series first, I probably wouldn't have given the new series a chance.  We love 10/Tenet, he is our favorite so far, not done with 11 just yet & 12 starts soon I believe.

I have started watching the original series, but mainly in the background.  So far, atleast with the 1st Doctor, it's flipping boring.  I hear good things about Doctor 4, which is "who" I recall seeing on PBS as a kid.  Unfortunately(or maybe fortunately??) there's a lot of missing episodes back from when BBC would record over their own shows!

In general, trying to watch less tv, if only because we just don't have the time!  Was watching Almost Human, but, like mentioned earlier, it was cancelled.  We do watch SHIELD(hoping the next season is better), (Green) Arrow, Falling Skies, Perception, NCIS & LA(& probably New Orleans), CSI, Continuum, the new TMNT, Big Bang Theory.  I watch(without my wife) Nartuo Shippuden, Beware the Batman, Law & Order SVU, Space Dandy, Black Lagoon.

Used to watch Clone Wars, but the last season is on Netflix.  We do want to see the Defenders series(Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage...& some chick whose name escapes me) next year, so might have to pick up Netflix, atleast temporarily.  I'd like to watch Avenger's Assemble, though I don't think it's supposed to be as good as Earth's Mightiest Heroes, plus, we don't get Disney XD.  Same goes for the next Transformers series, except we don't get The Hub.

The late 80's War of the Worlds TV series? I remember watching that on WPIX back in the day. I don't know how it would hold up today. I remember it as "OK" as a kid—but I don't remember it keeping me engaged/intrigued for its entire run (a lot of series are like that...the intrigue and charm dissipate). Same goes for Fox's "Werewolf" TV series...I wonder how it would hold up. Have you ever seen that? I liked it when I was a kid, but now...  :pcgs:

Speaking of old shows...The Hitcher was another TV show that I haven't seen in forever.

I love Tales from the Darkside (most episodes decent, some exceptional). One of the shows I always looked forward to back in the day. The entire opening sequence is pure gold. Close your eyes and it is 10x more powerful (even when I was a kid I wanted to get rid of the cheesy "inverse" video effect used....the original footage of the forest is good, but when it "flips" to the Darkside...ouch.)

I loved this format...Freddy's Nightmares, Tales from the Crypt, Twilight Zone (old and new...old so much better)....but my all-time favorite is ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. Granted, not quite the same as the others on the list, but still...

Damn, if I had time, there are a lot of things I would watch. (I barely scratched the surface).

I plan on finishing through seasons 2-6 of Tales from the Crypt, starting sometime soon.

I watched all of them to completion, when they first got released onto DVD. It was awesome seeing these get released, I gladly bought them upon release since I enjoyed them on HBO, and the movies in theatres.

But, since the DVD releases, I have not gone through each and every episode. Just a few episodes here, oh I want to watch that episode, etc.

Other than Season 2, the largest season, I recall watching each season to completion within 1-2 days. it may not have happened on the day it arrived, but when I started watching it, I binged. So, it shouldn't take too long.

The Hitcher has had a mess of DVD releases. "Best of" DVD sets in the USA, Canada got a nice "Season 1" set, but it has a bit of compression issues, nowhere near as bad as Ray Bradbury Theatre's DVD release, though.

That's a good one, Esteban. The set can be had for cheap, $10 for the whole series. The series used to run it all the time years ago on USA Network, back when they had Saturday Nightmares, UP! All Night, etc.

I could keep going on, but I'll stop here. :)

MrFulci, we better be careful. I think we could talk about TV for hours over coffee. We watched too much TV (ironic since i didn't a TV until 7th grade, I had to sneak into the basement, pull an old B/W set out of storage just to get my fix of Josie & the Pussycats before school! I loved all the late night USA Network stuff (even Gilbert Godfried...when hosted stuff for a while). Of course, all the greet TV I watched on the weekends when I stayed at my grandma's—my parents knew I was a lost soul.

HERE'S SOMETHING THAT MAY STUMP US: I loved a PBS  educational kids show that was from   70's/80's and had a young girl (she helps solve mysteries) with the help of a talking typewriter. Yeah, it sounds corny, but it had a wonderfully spooky atmosphere and I loved that about the show. She reminds me now of the girl from Land of the Lost (blonde braids), but that simply means it was a generic white girl. I've actually tried to find the title of this show years ago but gave up in frustration.

Don't even get me started on all the PBS shows I have watched. No cable TV makes you an addict.

I'll see what I can dig up about that PBS show you mention.

I watched a lot of Over the air (OTA) television, cable wasn't on all the TVs. OTA, years ago, that's where I would sometimes first see movie such as, Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Sword of the Valiant, The Pit, etc.

I think it's cool that the torch has been carried by some others, after the transition to digital broadcasting. There are now similar stations such as THIS!, Movies, and a few other I'm forgetting. They feature a good combination of older movies, and older shows.

Yeah to be honest it is feeling pretty rough. I thought it was cool when I was a kid but right now I'm not so sure. I need to watch it a bit more before I decide completely. Tales from the Darkside however remains excellent, as do all the other series like it. Some of the stuff is on Hulu. Hitchcock, Night Gallery, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits etc.

The United States if Tara

My wife and I watched it a handful of years ago and enjoyed it.  We've been looking for something to watch again and saw it was on Netflix.  It's still really good.  And it turns out it takes place in and around Overland Park, KS which is near our neck of the woods (I work in Olathe, one of it's neighboring towns).

I think it's only 4 seasons long, and I think they were relatively short seasons (it was on Showtime originally) so we'll probably be looking for something else to watch again soon...

Ok, I grew up watching Jon Pertwee & Tom Baker & Peter Davison first, then I was able to watch all the other doctors because PBS was awesome.

Hartnell, the first doctor, is a cranky old man and I kind of like that. A curmudgeon, through and through. The stories and sets and special effects are actually pretty decent, but the sound (at least the recordings I watched on TV back in the day) had a lot to be desired and, believe it or not, I think this single factor (poor sound quality) prevents the show from making a stronger impression with modern audiences. The pacing of the stories, for example, can be slow/tedious throughout the old series  (60's-80's). I used to think the first 2-3 doctors suffered this pacing problem the worst, but now I think it's because folks simply don't find the first two doctors (and/or companions) as charismatic/engaging/etc.

The second doctor is Shemp and I think PBS aired his stuff the fewest number of times. I'm least familiar with him.

All I can say is: give all the doctors a chance. I have my favorites, too.

I also really, really hate when the "companions get in trouble" trope—even as a kid, it annoyed the hell out of me. Some companions are insanely annoying, too. I try to bear with this garbage, but I'll be honest, it is not a consistent show. You take the crap with the gold (at least I do, anyway).

For example, some of the ALL-TIME BEST stories feature the worst companions. Even a horribly annoying companion can't torpedo an otherwise good production. I am of course thinking about ------The Caves of Androzani------ so very awesome, despite Peri (horrible actress simply cannot act).

Peri = worst companion ever.

Anyway, I could go on and on about Dr. Who.

ANOTHER SUGGESTION, IF YOU LIKE BRITISH SCI-FI: If you can find a way to watch Blake's 7, do it. Blake's 7. Much enjoyment.

Which reminds me of more goodness...there's DANGER MAN / SECRET AGENT MAN and The Prisoner...

Before your thread takes off, you've got a typo to fix: "you're" versus "your." FYI.

As for me, I have no TV series to speak of ATM and not for ages since like early ~2000. I tried to finish off Highlander which is 6 seasons on Hulu.com a few years ago, but I stopped at the third and haven't gotten back around to it yet. My DSL sucks and so does streaming but that's only part of the reasons I haven't resumed it. Oh, I did get a few episodes of season 1 of "The Outer Limits" come to think of it back during this time. Anyway, I mostly stick with movies for entertainment I guess, these days at least.

Cool, my wife and I recently started watching Doctor Who as well. It was a little weird at first accepting Barty Crouch as the Doctor, but he's quickly become one of my favorites (right up there with Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee.) Great show!

We've also been watching the old Six Million Dollar man series, which holds up surprisingly well. Speaking of which, William Shatner guest-starred in an episode of season one and my poor TV almost couldn't handle the combined machismo of Shatner and Majors together on screen in full 70s garb. I think my wife got pregnant just from watching it... I fully expect the baby to come out sporting lush chest hair and holding a glass of bourbon.

Oh, and we'll hopefully be re-watching the awesome new Cosmos series on Blu-ray soon.

I haven't seen 6 Million $ or Bionic Woman in ages. I loved those shows.

One of the best episodes of Bionic Woman involved a sentient computer (like HAL from 2001) and a doomsday weapon that would destroy the planet.

Sadly, I can't remember any other plot lines from either series! How sad is that. I watched them all, multiple times, back in the day.

The only shows I regularly watch are South Park and Walking Dead, both of which are on a break right now.  Most of my TV watching doesn't consist of sitcoms/dramas, but rather is baseball or Jeopardy.

However, I am slowly making my way through Louie, as it is something my girlfriend and I can agree on.  We just finished season one and I found it pretty amusing.

It is a little dry, in a similar vein as Curb, so you would likely enjoy it.

BTW - USA Up All Night was awesome and I am glad I wasn't the only one to watch it.

I'm normally not a fan of comedian shows but I think his humor is pretty funny and the show is pretty good.

I was skeptical at first as well but I gave it a shot and enjoyed it.

I'm looking forward to season 2 of Under the Dome starting up on Monday.  It doesn't follow the book much and the characters are rather dumb, but I still enjoy it and at least it's not some jackball reality show.

Other shows I try to catch when they're on: Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, SNL, Supernatural, Dr. Who (Tom Baker's scarf for the win!), This Old House, Brooklyn Nine Nine, and the Millers (gotta watch GOB).

Got the urge while scrolling through Netflix to rewatch all the seasons of My Name Is Earl.  As a Kevin Smith fan .. became of a fan of Jason Lee, and Ethan Suplee.  That show cracks me up, and is great and low key before heading off to sleep. Just wish it was on HBO as I'd like to see more of Nadine Velazquez.  [-o<  I know this is Netflix, but not original content for them .. originally saw it when it was on standard TV cable.

I only have the handful of Dr. Who available on Netflix. Some great stuff there, but I wish I had more! gotta watch some more. I like Colin Baker more than most folks, I think.

This Old House circa 70's, 80's, 90's, etc.?  :pcgs: Rich Carthuey (sp?). I KNOW THE DAMN PLUMBER'S NAME.

Currently watching a Season Two of original Star Trek with my daughter. Awesome.

Extras (Ricky Gervais) — rewatching because I realized I needed to. Can't believe it's been 8 years or longer.

I'm the same way. I'm about 7 or so episodes in. I'm liking it so far surprisingly. I loved playing the Lost and the Damned so it makes sense why I like it. But Ron Perlman and Jax both seem like kind of....cheesy characters. I don't know, it's weird. But I like the show nonetheless

Don't its a very fun series to watch. Unfortunately it is in that weird middle ground like attack on Titan where the first series blew through all the manga and we have to wait a year or more for there to be more content to animate.

As for the HOD OVA that came out it sucks. Pass on it unless you find the movie for $5 or less. It doesn't add to the story it's filler content at its worst and doesn't even retain the fun or charim the series has.

Not sure how far you are into the first season but pm me when you finish id like to rehash the fun parts...

Agreed, that is a truly great opening scene.

Currently watching (once a week):

Inspector Morse — I haven't seen some of these in over 20 years. I only remember a few random things each episode. I love it, but lots of folks might find it boring.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries — OK, I dismissed this at first, only to realize that it is a friggin' fun, fun show.

Sopranos — Rewatching this for third time. BECAUSE WE TRY TO GUESS THE LOCATIONS (lots of NJ locations).

Been stuck at season 4 for a long time, but my new 30 Mbps Comcast connection is working very well, consistent speed, no dropouts, the used modem I scored on eBay seems A-OK, so streaming video is no longer a painful experience as it was with a 1.5 Mbps DSL line!

"Chiller", about 1 day a week, or month, or something, for a long many hours block, re-runs TFTDS. Same with Monsters, and Friday the 13th: The Series. All are available on DVD now, also! Monsters, as of 2013.

*TFTDS DVDs, some episodes have their soundtrack edited a bit on DVD. Other than that, the other 2 series on DVD are as-aired, as far as I know. I watched every episode on the Monsters set, and it was as it should be, to my recollection, brief nudity and all (In that great episode, about the killer rats.). I've yet to attempt the same with TFTDS or F12 series.

I have so many fond memories of watching The Carol Burnett Show when I was very (very) young. I don't think there's ever been anything funnier on TV than Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. It's probably second only to All in the Family as my all-time favorite comedy show.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the wife and I just finished watching the Series 6 finale of Downton Abbey. As a male person, I really feel like I enjoy that show way more than I should.

The one sketch that always cracks me up is the Nazi interrogator with his repertoire of techniques.

Heh, that's good stuff. Poor Lyle Waggoner was really outclassed by the talent around him... he basically ended up being a warm body for most of the sketches. He seems like a super-nice guy, though.

Also, pretty much any sketch where Tim played the slow old man character was a winner for me.

The real payoff, of course, is the puppet. But I didn't want to ruin it. There are some clips that include just the puppet, but it is much funnier seeing the sketch build up to that point.

All of the gags in that sketch are pretty generic, except for the puppet. But, it doesn't matter how cliched the gags are, the performances make it enjoyable.

Speaking of performances....I know, Lyle is barely present in that sketch.

...

Yes, Tim did crazy physical humor. The old man defied the laws of physics. Crazy.

...

One thing I didn't know was that the show taped a "regular" version of a sketch and then, later, taped a  freer "ad-lib, if you want to" version. Conway, it seems, made it his personal goal to get the other folks to laugh.

I'm watching Falling Skies. I never saw it when it originally aired. Its pretty much The Walking Dead with aliens instead of zombies. The acting isn't quite as good though.

I thought it was really good... one of the best premieres I've seen in a long time, and the soundtrack was great.

Plus, they pretty much have a blank check creatively. If the premise starts to wear thin they can easily write in other characters and stuff.

This week's Better Call Saul is probably the best hour of television I've seen since Breaking Bad. Just great acting from Jonathan Banks. The Rail Runner thing bothered me a bit (though I thought it started later than 2006), but by the end it made no difference. Hell, this week's episode would stand out as one of the best Breaking Bad episodes had it been part of that series.

EDIT: I also think this season of It's Always Sunny is really good too. Charlie Work is one of my favorite episodes yet.

I haven't seen this week's episode of Saul, but I was hoping to watch it tonight. I'm glad to hear other people enjoy the show, as sometimes I feel like my opinions are swayed by prior enjoyment of related properties.

We may have similar tastes though, but this Always Sunny season has restored my faith in the potential for quality on the show. I felt like the last season was a dip, but it was hard to follow up on Fat Mac :D

Just watched the Better Call Saul finale on my DVR last night...I feel like it was a bit of an anti-climactic ending to the first season. All in all, I'm really happy they made the series, and I hope that they continue with a season 2, but I also feel like I wouldn't be into the show without its relation to Breaking Bad.

I do love the little fan Easter Eggs they drop in from time to time - like Jimmy saying that he wanted to vacation in Belize.

OK, I haven't added my two cents. :)

I watched the entire series. Overall, I like the show, and I like that it isn't attempting to be as XTRRME as Breaking Bad.

However, the final episode suggested that the series *might* be taking a turn for the XTREME.

We shall see...

I was somewhat biased when it came to Game of Thrones since I read the novels and enjoyed them.

Currently watching Game of Thrones. Also I just finished up the final season of Entourage. I stopped watching the show because seasons 6&7 really went down the tubes for me. But after all these years I figured I would do a quick refresh and at least finish the series. Well the final season sucked as well in my opinion.

My girlfriend has been wanting to watch "Everything You Didn't Know About Animals" every night; it's a pointless facts about animals show, but every now and then there's an interesting tidbit. One that comes to mind is that Tiger's stripes are actually visible on their skin if shaved, or that polar bear fur is clear in color and their skin is black - so their white color comes from reflected light.

I much prefer fictional narratives, like Game of Thrones, but I'm practicing my future gameplan of "Happy Wife, Happy Life"

I don't know why so many folks are not enjoying the second season of True Detective, but my friends and family feel the same as you.

IMHO, there was only one episode, where ONE SEQUENCE was lame: the sequence where they raided the EYES WIDE SHUT sex party and accomplished certain things (no spoilers).

Personally, this was the only time where the series veered into a totally different vibe (a "Mission Impossible" vibe) that was incongruous with the first two seasons.

It definitely has something to do with personal tastes—I think a lot of people had an easier time getting lost in the "Southern Gothic" elements of the first season, and were disappointed that it was replaced by the grime and dreariness of urban/suburban (Southern?) California.

Anyway, it reminded me of a lot of cities I know in Southern California.

I honestly felt the storyline(s) were too condensed at times. I think if it went say another 2/3 episodes it would have fleshed out a bit more. I loved the cast. I can't compare it to the first season though since I haven't watched it yet.

Just started watching Firefly.
It flew under my radar when it was released, but recently I saw it ranked high on a best sci-fi series list so thought to check it out.
Not fully sure what I think of it just yet as only seen the first episode, seems a little cheesy so far but I'll give it more of a chance.

Watched the first episode of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.  I watched Letterman occasionally for many years and am kinda sad that he's not on TV anymore.  Likewise I liked Colbert a lot on his old show.  That being said, I liked the first episode of the Late Show and will probably continue to occasionally watch it like I did Letterman.

What I didn't like though?  No top ten list.  I realize that it's not exactly the new same show as it was before but that was a big staple of the Late Show.  Not having a top ten list felt really weird.

Fear the Walking Dead. It's nice to see how things went down post Rick & crew. However I can't seem to care about any of the characters.

Just a bunch of pompous, arrogant, sexual deviants. :P

Paul Giamatti. Word.

Forget what he did in that "Amazing Spider-Man 2," pretend it never happened and always just think of him from "Shoot 'Em Up" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoot_%27Em_Up_(film))

Due to REASONS (my son wakes up at night and will disassemble lamps/do dangerous stuff, he's four + special), I watched more TV in last few weeks than I have in the last decade or two. It's crazy. :)

My 6th grader & wife and I are watching original X-Files series and really having fun. We are in Season 2. I barely remember any of these storylines (when they krgianlly aired).

I saw one of the X Files movies (the first) in the theatre, but I don't remember much of that, either. It must have been late 90's?

I watched every episode of "The In-betweeners" (British) on Netflix a few weeks ago and I thought it was pretty entertaining.

EVEN BETTER was the supremely wonderful THE DETECTORISTS (British) on Netflix. I only watched first season...I hope Netflix will sign a contract for the second season!

TWIN PEAKS....I'm wrapping-up the second season. Again, I didn't remember 90% of this stuff, although I had vague memories of the weird events/storylines.  I know I enjoyed the film...so I will watch it immediately after finishing up the next 3(?) episodes.

No. Maude. The one with all the vest/housecoat things. Norman Lear. 1972. First appearance of Florida and James Evans.

Did you know Conrad Bain had an identical twin brother? That kinda surprised me.

You sure about that? Wasn't their son Lionel a friend of the meathead/Gloria on Archie Bunker?  I could swear Archie went to meet Lionels parents one time, looking for Gloria....
Coulda been post-72 though.

Wow, that makes me old.

(For you Young-uns: IIRC, Maude's hubby Phillip was originally a drinking buddy/ co-worker of Archies. Maude and Edith became friends...Which led to the Maude spin-off. Don't remember how Florida and Maude met (probably at a women's lib meeting), which led to the "good times" spinoff.  Then, iirc, Maude moved into an apartment building, where she met Sherman Hemsley (don't remember the characters name) and the maid (don't remember her name either), who eventually ended up with their own series.... Yeah Normal Lear ruled the 70's sitcoms :)

Nope, that's a fine choice too! I bought a DVD of it. That was way back when M. Night Shyamalan still had his mojo. Was a promising director, kinda sad to see him go downhill like that after a string of successes.

Lately I've been working my way through the 21 Jump Street series and am currently on season 4. It's a pretty hit and miss show as it sometimes focuses too much on some drama with the main characters rather than an actual case and sometimes the conclusions are pretty unsatisfying but overall I like the show. The quality is pretty low on the DVD set but still not too bad when you consider it was $15 for an entire series.

I intended to watch the entire 21 Jump Street series when it was onNetflix (7-8 years ago?), but I didn't make it too far.

It was fun watching the episodes, but I made the mistake of assuming it would always be available.

I like the silly show. Also, do you get to see the anti-drug PSA's at the end of the episodes?

1-800-COCAINE

This has always struck me as an absurd-yet-hilarious phone number for a drug/crisis hotline.

The movie was enjoyable and focused more on elements from the first season, which is better, IMHO.

Aesthetically, I think the movie format (and high production values) elevated the content above its TV soap opera drama roots.

But...I look forward to seeing it if it holds up as well as I hope it will.

I only remember one PSA from the DVDs, it was right before the closing credits on one episode; you're making me wonder if I shouldn't just skip to the next episode as soon as the credits come up... I hate when that happens on Netflix, but if you made it through the first two seasons then you've already seen most of the better episodes, imo.

An alternate history story that is not only eery but plausible.

Recently finished watching the last few episodes of the one and only season of Stalker. Pretty bummed that CBS didn't renew for a season 2.

I enjoyed the series as it was different to any other show on current TV. I liked the focus on a different part of the police. Most shows are portraying homicide or cyber or special victims, so this was an interesting angle. The cast were were well suited to their characters and thought the show gave a good scare. Sad to see it go.

Oh, might as well mention it running into this thread. I got interested in the X-Files again, and am caught up with the Monday episode thanks to FOX's website. I only have a one word review: weird. That's all I'm good for, sorry. ;)

What sucks about my new smart TV is it's limited in apps since they didn't choose the Android Operating System and FOX is still using a video player made with Adobe Flash instead of building something with HTML5/MP4 standards. The TV's browser can run videos just fine if the website is using the HTML5 video tag with a MP4 file. I tested that out with another site.

But anyway, yeah, with the war on Flash and attempting to phase it out on mobile OSes (like Android, other Linux variants), you still need a Windows desktop to view sites like that or hope they made an app for your OS (which FOX did, but for Android!). I hope somebody makes an Android layer for LG's WebOS2.0. That would make this new TV of mine a really good deal and future-proof it for a good many years!

I just gave the new x-files show a spin, I wasn't even that interested before but I did it on a whim.  I liked the original show, so I'll stick with this one and see where it goes.  Scully looks different to me, did she get plastic surgery?  I know she's older now of course, just seems like something else is different.  I've only watched the first episode so far.

I also missed the fact that The Walking Dead started back up and also Better Call Saul.  I have been pretty disappointed in TWD for a really long time but I still just watch it out of habit.  Better Call Saul's opener was alright, not blown away or anything yet but looking forward to more.

Ditto on Stranger Things.

Add "E.T." to the list of films/shows that ST was clearly inspired by.

Wife + 12-year-old loved it. I was quite happy, too, especially the homage to synth (I don't care how contrived it might be, I love 80's-styled synth).

I FORBADE SKIPPING OPENING SEQUENCE just so I could listen to it.

Oh, yeah, like TRON said: the show was lots of fun.

Oh, absolutely...I think King was specifically referring to MK ULTRA in his story, too.

I haven't seen Firestarter since the 80's, but George C Scott would have been proud of 11's skills.

TRIVIA: There is an episode of GI Joe that refers to MK ULTRA (not by name)...it was the episode with a handful of  folks who are psychic warriors...

I have wanted to see that episode again since I was a kid! I only saw it 1-2 times.

:)

BACK ON TOPIC:

The Killing

I finished two seasons...saw finale of Season 2 last night...this is just a great, nicely-paced show. To describe it would make it sound generic...but somehow it transcends all of its tropes and cliches and exists as a genuinely entertaining story arc/show.

TRON! The Killing owes something to Twin Peaks, but I don't think most folks watching it will see the connections...they will compare it to other "gritty" crime dramas...but so many elements of Twin Peaks are here.

No, not the obvious Lynch surreal/absurd/goofy stuff...but the pulpy noirish stuff about Northwest history/culture, atmosphere, idyllic vs horrific family/community...high school victim, etc.

Or, you might think it's slow, generic and sucks.

:)

I plowed through 10 seasons of the X Files (and both movies) and the one season of The Lone Gunmen earlier this year and I've been looking for something to fill the void. Several years ago I started watching Fringe which certainly had an X Files feel to it. Unfortunately Fringe season 1 is pretty rough. A buddy of mine has been telling me for years that Fringe really gets awesome and just stick with it, but I gave up near the beginning of season 2. I thought I knew what the big reveal was and it just didn't live up to the hype for me. Still, in my desperation, I had to watch something, so I figured I'd give Fringe another go.

HOLY. SHIT.

My buddy wasn't joking, this show gets damn awesome and I had quit just before it got awesome. The episode "Peter" in season 2 (episode 16) is where it gets amazing. I mean, there are decent episodes before this, but after this it's just great. Is it as good as the X Files? Well... probably not, but the mythology of Fringe is much better than that of the X Files. So that's what I'm watching now, I'm about midway through season 3.

Fringe looked interesting, was one I probably would've tried to get into if I hadn't lost my TV-watching habit.

It's rare for me to watch TV anymore, it's a really distant memory from when that was a frequent habit (over 15 years). I try to get in a movie now and then, that's about it. But yeah, Gotham is kind of the first attempt in over a decade to actually tune in to a TV show live.

Right after it, FOX has a show called Lucifer, basically about the devil taking a vacation from hell on earth and partnering with a L.A. detective. Yeah, it's just a cop show with a twist and it's not bad actually, I caught a few episodes of it and the one last night.

Yeah, "NeoGyver" was sad... He's far from anything close to having the charisma and likeability that Richard Dean Anderson had... :/ It's impossible for fans of the previous series not to make the comparisons and contrasts...

In Gotham news, Penguin is running for mayor and extorted the release of Nigma from the Arkhm asylum... He may be a crazed psychopathic killer, but gosh darnet, I love that little guy! Hahaha!

The show's crazy some times, even how Penguin and Gordon's killer ex girlfriend could be released from that asylum was surreal in their alternate reality. Some episodes have been bad, but I find it's worth keeping up with so far.

There's a wild variation in the quality of episodes from one to another but it has just enough 80s campyness and at times great writing to hit the mark more often than not. When episodes are good they can be great. And when episodes aren't, they can suck.

Been watching Netflix's Ozark (Jason Bateman). It's quite decent... anyways I am on ep 7 of 10 and it's still quite unclear how it will finish or what are they actually doing. I guess there will be more seasons seeing it's a bit slow unless they suddenly do a major thing for the last 2 episodes.

I'm a season behind, but that's pretty much how I feel too.  The writing has gotten really dumb, with way too many inconsistencies in how characters act, most major plot conflicts/resolutions relying on blind luck, flip flopping loyalties, and the slow speed of everything.

Also, it kinda pisses me off that they wasted Alicia Witt on a minor character.  The good guys could've used a sexy ginger on their side.

Been watching old Johnny Carson interviews on YouTube if that counts?

Season 2 of Stranger Things gets too much criticism.  I didn't like the new mutant too much (non-spoiler I hope), but I think Sean Astin was a nice add.  Also loved Max's brother, the mom seduction scene was great.

I can't tell if I like the X-Files new season or hate it, but I can't stop watching.  Episode with the original X-File creator gave me quite a few laughs.  Were Mulder and Scully always bad actors though?

It has SciFi elements of Blade Runner, Matrix, Fifth Element, and some Zardoz given it explores quasi immortality if you're rich enough to keep clones around, periodically "back up" your brain contents to an implanted storage device, etc.

Season one is only 10 episodes so you can watch the whole thing over the weekend. I enjoyed it well enough although the plot could've used some more work. It's mostly a hardboiled detective/cop kind of show.

There are some SciFi cameos like the Max Headroom actor who plays a weird host of an underground fightclub ring, and Daniel Bernhardt who plays a type of relentless space cop/soldier - he's the cheap Jean Claude Van Damme knockoff who did "Bloodsport 2," and the main sunglass-wearing Matrix agent in "Matrix: Reloaded" since "Mr. Smith" went rogue.

Anyway, you won't be blown away or anything, I don't think, but it kept me very interested all the way through so definitely worth checking out for the casual SciFi movie fan. I give it a thumbs up!

I just watched the two free episodes last night.  I enjoyed it enough that I will probably use my free trial of Red to watch the rest.

Funny thing is that I re-watched the original movie on Prime the other night completely randomly.  I was not aware of this new show and I didn't find out about the show until the day after watching the movie.  So by some strange coincidence, I was super excited to start watching the new series.

I caught up with season 4 of Gotham the other day, I missed Joker's death a few weeks back and skipped forward to Ra's al Ghul's resurrection, followed by Joker's "resurrection" and battery bomb plot for half of Gotham in this week's episode... I'm confused... It's a dark mess, still nothing quite like it on TV AFAIK...

I am now wanting to see Cobra Kai also, I saw the trailers, wondered if this idea could work, now am seeing mostly good things being said about it on social media.

He is correct!!! Finished the Cobra Kai series also (only a 10 episode season), loved every minute of it!! :)

Everything good you heard is true, I can't believe it, they really made the concept work in bringing back Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence!

When the trailers were popping up a few months ago I had a lukewarm response. I thought it was cool the original actors were returning, but I didn't think it'd work as a TV series and I worried it'd be a disservice to the movie magic of the original, similar to the "sequelitis" effect with Karate Kid II/III, how they got progressively worse...

Anyway, it was all the positive reviews/vibes I was seeing on social media that led me to give it a try, glad I did!!!!

Best part, I think they used plot ideas from this funny Karate Kid parody video a few years back! Here it is: http://youtu.be/C_Gz_iTuRMM So what the creator did is flip the script, portray Daniel as the real bully with selective editing, commentary, etc. It's hilarious! Even funnier there's a crazed troll that harasses the creator because he can't take the joke, he believes the creator is serious, and is angry that this somehow ruins the beloved memory of the movie, heh heh.

But yeah, in one of the episodes, Johnny is talking about how he was just trying to talk to his girlfriend, Daniel got in the way, "out of nowhere" sucker punches him so he did what anyone would do by defending himself! While he tells his "version" of events or "truth," footage from the original movie plays in the background so you're reminded of what really happened, hahaha! Fantastic!

I swear, they must've been influenced by the above parody video which went viral when it was released. That whole element plays out in the series where Daniel winds up being petty, vengeful, while Johnny is honestly trying to improve his life circumstances, etc.

Suffice to say, I loved it and I really think it has a chance to be picked up for several seasons! :)

Watched the pilot episode of Yellowstone.

Modern western type themed show. Kevin Costner as the patriarch of the Dutton clan. Very seldom do you see Costner involved in a TV series.
Liked what I saw thus far. Hopefully it doesn't take a turn and become the full-on Western version of Dynasty.

No relation to SpectreMan as I first thought, a whacky Japanese live-action TV series I used to watch as a kid, heh.
