2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Edit... I don't like but hate it lol
Full House wasn't bad at all.
In fact, most of the ABC "TGIF" Friday night family comedies were quite enjoyable.
Life seemed so much simpler back then, at least if those shows are anything to go by.
Full House sucked. All those other shows sucked. What was "simpler" back then was the audience. "Life" was about the same.
Well that might be true I guess.
But it's nice to watch a show where families interacted with one another and got into all kinds of plights and hijinks without constantly burying their noses in a cell phone or whatever.

I have a confession to make.
I do like some of the Dreamcast games.  But I really hate the console.

I can't be the only one bothered by the incessant and loud noise of the laser drive, can I?
God damn...it sounds like the system is trying to SAW itself in half when it's in the middle of loading some games!

There was a show (I think back in 2000 or 2001, I don't remember) called She Spies.
It was sort of a low-rent modern day version of Charlie's Angels.

I quite liked it, but it never really seemed popular with the masses.

You can't really go wrong with POW for the NES.
Great game.  But do yourself a favor and play through it without resorting to using the 21 life code.

I remember seeing this eloquent work of poetry scrawled on the wall of the men's room in some shopping mall:

Here I sit

Quote from: Dicer on 07/29/2015, 11:40 PM8 was shite, forcing a mobile/table OS on people...Metro is unusable flat panel garbage, 8.1 made 8* a lot more tolerable. the proof that 8 was garbage is how scaled down Metro is in 10, it's like an afterthought and easily hidden and done away with.
Not really.  Metro did help bridge the gap for a hybrid PC/Tablet OS.  It was an experiment, but I found it to be rather useful and intuitive on the Surface.

Alright, I forced the update and now I'm posting from Windows 10
So far so good.

I too had no issues with 8.1  --- in worked great on my Surface Pro 3 and this new version is just more of the same, only better.

Does it just update from the Windows Update panel, or are you forcing the update somehow?

Oh, don't get me wrong.  ASCII is a great company and their games and controllers have been consistently great over the years.

I just laugh a little because back in 1988 (or was it 1989?) Nintendo took Camerica to court over the Freedom Stick because it very closely copied the design of their NES Advantage stick.  In actuality, it was more like ASCII's Advantage.  Anyway, such is life with regards to intellectual property I guess.

I have it 'reserved' for my Surface Pro 3.
When do I actually get to download and install it?  I don't see the option to do so, just yet.

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB: Atari 7800 setup
07/28/2015, 08:32 PM
Hello,

I've been thinking of reliving my youth and getting a US/NTSC Atari 7800 console.
Yes, I can get them off eBay, but I'd rather support my fellow OBEYERS on here.

What I want:
* Atari 7800 console ---- great shape and fully functioning.
I would prefer that all original wires, adapters and whatnot are included.
I need this to be NTSC (not PAL, SECAM or whatever other weird standards that they used in Europe or whatever)
* At least one fully functional joystick.  Original or the gamepad variant preferred

Let me know what you have, and state your price
#165
I'll never forget the day I learned that the venerable NES ADVANTAGE joystick was not designed/made by Nintendo, but rather ASCII

My mind was blown.
And then I saw that ASCII released the same damn stick for other consoles.

We US gamers were so sheltered in the 80's....that's what happens when all your gaming news came from monthly mags like EGM and Gamepro

Quote from: guest on 07/27/2015, 01:44 PMHe then flipped 11 of them in a row on eBay for up to $240 each.
Damn, is that what they sell for now??
I bought a few at a Toys R Us clearance back in 2002 or 2003 for like $1.97 each.
Sadly, I ended up giving a few away just to get rid of them... :(

Quote from: Flare65 on 07/08/2015, 01:59 PMDoes anyone know what happened to the editor Steve Harris?  Didn't he sell his interest int he magazine at some point?
Yes, he sold out to Ziff-Davis sometime in the mid to late 1990's.

Sadly enough, Steve Harris re-launched EGM again a few years back.  It's still published, but the format is a bit different (more long reviews and introspectives).  The staff is predictably enough, comprised of modern day hipsters (complete with the prerequisite thick glasses) who seem to love the indie gaming scene.  Not my cup of tea.

Quote from: Dicer on 07/08/2015, 05:01 AMI have the logitech controller sitting her collecting dust, I should offload it...

I also have t3k and merlin creeping around somewhere, need to find them.
Those controllers have certainly increased in value recently.
Back in 2002 after the NUON platform imploded and died off, there was an online store (dvdinternational I think?) that was selling controllers and games off for like $10 a piece.  I stocked up on several, but eventually ended up ebaying them a few years later.

At the end of the day, all hobbies have their version of collectards.  Whether its games, coins, Pokémon, paper currency or classic cars, there will always be someone who is solely in it for the monetary aspect.

Whoa I never thought I'd see one of those joysticks up for sale.
Can you elaborate how it works in context of the actual game?  I had the US release of Otomedius and I thought it was sort of standard in terms of how it controlled.

Quote from: Lost Monkey on 07/06/2015, 01:37 PMI had everything officially released at one point and a couple of the brownish coloured controllers.

I also had IS3.  It was about as powerful as n64. Merlin Racing was buggy as all hell and T3K was really hard to play.

Pretty much crap all around and I got rid of my stuff about a year after purchase.
Pretty much my sentinments and experience with the platform.
I did really enjoy Merlin Racing though...in terms of depth, that was probably the best of the launch titles.  In fact, Miracle Design even went on to release the game (on several discs -- one for each vehicle class) on the PS1 if memory serves me right.

Picked this lot up yesterday off a local guy for $100 cad. Haven't bothered to check if that's high or not. All the games came with little plastic cases too. First time I've come up on Neo Geo Pocket in Canada, and I completely forgot about it until this point. Only time I ever seen these things were at a KB Toys in like Buffalo area once or twice when I was a kid and I had no idea what they were. Me and my cousin were playing some games yesterday, it's pretty cool. The controls are awesome and the screen's colour is pretty nice. I also love that the lithium battery used for keeping saved game memory is a part of the console and easily accessible compared to the Game Boy Colour and Game Boy Advance setup.
Decent deal.
I had a NGPC once, but I could really warm up to it.  Mainly the audio has that chintzy Sega Master System-sound to it (shrilly and bell-like I guess).  Kind of surprising since this was late 1990's technology.

I remember that article.
I was sort of surprised to see Hudson going in this direction, considering their success with the PC Engine and its many variants.

Quote from: esteban on 06/29/2015, 01:50 PMSpecifically, I WANT TO KNOW PRECISELY WHAT THE NUON-ENHANCED movie features were!
I'll shamefully admit that I bought into the NUON bandwagon back in 2001.  I was intrigued by the maverick spirit of the platform and I needed a DVD player anyway.

I owned the Samsung N2000 and later the silvery N501.

As for the NUON ENHANCED movies, well, let's just say that it wasn't all great.  You got something called 'viddies' which was sort of like a hyperlinked picture-in-picture feature.  And a couple of other foregettable enhancements that I really can't remember.

That said, the NUON processor did add some cool features to standard DVD playback like really great zoom effects, a strobe feature where  you could loop say a sequence over and over very smoothly, and it also featured a very smooth fast forward and rewind functionality that most DVD players of the time could not replicate.

Regarding games, there was no save feature for scores or positions as far as I can remember.  Iron Soldier III and Merlin Racing all used passwords to save progress.  Space Invaders and Ballistic did not save high scores either.  I think the intention was to release a save cartridge or unit at some point, but it never materialized.  Also, forget about playing Tempest 3000...it's just a horrible blurry mess that's too chaotic....I'm not exaggerating when I say that its like trying to play Tempest through some Vaseline screen filter (and its accompanied by all kinds of weird barnyard animal sound effects).

I know they discovered a few unreleased games at some point.  Bust A Move was one, which indicated that Taito had been on board until the inevitable implosion of VM Labs.

Everything had this weird grunge-era vibe to it.
