I don't know if there is a list of game titles that have problems with hardware but I just came to the conclusion of the following

Sol Moonarge

Damnit I really like this game, the gameplay the PSG music, controls basically everything about it I like.  But it looks like I have encountered a problem with this game running on real hardware.

Basically when you start the game for the first few hours the game runs fine but once you reach a section still early in the game when you reach a temple and witnessing some incident involving what appears to be some round mirror getting smashed.. the game just hangs.

Now I have a pc engine briefcase set-up and have different types of accessories hooked up to it.

I tried switching between different combinations of the following

super CD-Rom card, Arcade Pro Card
multi tap wireless controller,  2 button wired controller, 6 button wired controller
memory 128 either connected up or disconnected.

I  first bought the game a few months ago when I first experienced the game hanging and I wondered whether the game CD had any imperfections but couldn't find any upon inspection.  Even getting the CD-rom repaired in a game store I tried the game again and still the game just hanged in the same area.  So I purchased another copy of the game, same problem game hanged in the same spot.  A couple of months later I now own 3 copies of the game.

IMG

Between switching between all copies and hardware accessory configuration while playing the game it still hangs with blank loading screen at the same scene!

IMG

I can only concur that this game only runs properly for Duo/Duo-R hardware unless all 3 copies of the game I own have scratches in the same data area!

Shin Megami Tensei
The game controls go out of whack when playing on a wireless controller.  Wired is the only way to go when playing with this.

IMG

Magicoal
The game manual states this supports the memory 128 back up unit.  It saves fine but I cannot load from it the game just hangs.

Yokai Dochuki
This early game will not start if you have a multi tap plugged in.  This includes the wireless multi tap

if any one is interested there is that unique amplifier and speaker set up for the pc engine going on sale right now on eBay.

I've only ever seen this in old japanese pc engine magazines and never in the flesh !!

If it wasn't so expensive I would snatch it up but it looks pretty new!

formats: SNES, PC-E/Turbografx-16, Genesis, NES, Gameboy, Arcade

pc-e jpn release 1991, USA 1992.

players: 1, 2, 4

So I've had this game in my collection for a while now and most of the time whenever I put it on I always lose every time  the cpu to wondering how the heck do you play this game?? Well I started playing this again and now that I've spent some time with it.  It's actually pretty good gameplay wise.

So the pc engine version comes with 3 game modes;  arcade, championship (play against colored teams: Blues, Greens, Yellows, Blacks)  Shot Race (20 seconds to score goals).

The gameplay is pretty simple.  A team consisting of Goalie, Offence and Defence you control mostly the Offence (most of the time) and Goal player (to some extent) VS a similar team. The object is simply to score as many goals using luck, some skill and violence!

The control buttons:  I - pass/save.   II - shoot/check.

You'll mostly be using the button II for shooting and for a special attack to incur violence! (each character has their own special attack on the ice rink)  You'll need violence to win!!
IMG

Button II will also be used for slapping the puck around but hold it down for 5 seconds while the puck is in your possession and your hockey stick will turn yellow! (you'll might end up doing a super shot to the goalie)
IMG

Fights usually and randomly seem to break out, use both buttons and mash them you can also aim the direction left or right but I've still not worked this out on how to win yet. On losing your player might be weak for a little while.  (At least I think they are fighting in that pic.. or are they getting it on with one another)??
IMG

You can also do super shots, dive for the puck, score a hat trick.

Avoid stuff being thrown onto the ice, they cause you to fall !  Things like broken bottles, food and  Octopuses...

If you are losing by 5 points.  You might find a power-up called Super Drink that will give you power shots for a short time.

The effects of.... What was in that drink ??
IMG

Graphically well it's a step down from the arcade daddy and there are things missing graphically, smaller sprites the audio is s step down too, But at least there is scorchy but charming sampled speech and drums!
Anyway give it a go, It get's kinda hectic while the rounds are quite long at around 5 minutes, you'll need to win 3 times to win the game.

IMG

Don't get to close to the rival team's goalie, you'll get pushed over!
IMG

press both buttons I & II to dive save.

This kinda makes me really uneasy...

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/gchq-gets-us-spy-data-from-google-and-facebook-8649914.html

Britain's electronic eavesdropping agency GCHQ has been covertly gathering information from leading internet companies through a secret US spy programme, it was reported today.

The Guardian said that it had obtained documents showing that GCHQ had access to the Prism system, set up by America's National Security Agency (NSA), since at least June 2010.

The documents were said to show that the British agency, based at Cheltenham, had generated 197 intelligence reports through the system in the 12 months to May 2012 - a 137 per cent increase on the previous year.

The newspaper said that the Prism programme appeared to allow GCHQ to circumvent the formal legal process required to obtain personal material, such as emails, photographs and videos, from internet companies based outside the UK.

GCHQ refused to comment directly on the report, but in a statement it insisted that it operated within a "strict legal and policy framework".

"GCHQ takes its obligations under the law very seriously," the statement said.

"Our work is carried out in accordance with a strict legal and policy framework which ensures that our activities are authorised, necessary and proportionate, and that there is rigorous oversight, including from the Secretary of State, the Interception and Intelligence Services Commissioners and the Intelligence and Security Committee."

The existence of the Prism system was disclosed in earlier reports by The Guardian and The Washington Post.

It followed the disclosure by The Guardian of a secret court order requiring the US telecoms company Verizon to turn over the telephone records of millions of US customers.

Details of the Prism system were said to have been set out in a 41-page PowerPoint presentation prepared for senior analysts at the NSA, the biggest electronic eavesdropping organisation in the world.

It is said to give the NSA and the FBI easy access to the systems of nine of the world's top internet companies, including Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo and Skype.

It was said to have been established in 2007 under changes to US surveillance laws passed under President George Bush and renewed last year under Barack Obama in order to provide in depth surveillance on live communications and stored information on foreigners overseas.

According to the leaked document, "special programmes for GCHQ exist for focused Prism processing" - suggesting the British agency may have been receiving material from a part of the programme specifically designed to meet its needs.

MPs expressed concern at the report. Senior Tory David Davis said it was difficult to reconcile GCHQ's statement that it was subject to proper scrutiny with the fact that Parliament had no knowledge of the programme whatsoever.

"In the absence of parliamentary knowledge approval by a secretary of state is a process of authorisation, not a process of holding to account. Since nobody knew it was happening at all there is no possibility of complaint," he said.

"No review will be conducted by the two commissioners; the Interception of Communications Commissioner and the Intelligence Services Commissioner. Furthermore since it is outside the normal remit of UK intelligence it is hard to see how the Intelligence and Security Committee would have the resources or access to ensure the NSA behaved appropriately."

Liberal Democrat Julian Huppert, a member of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, said he hoped to force the Government to respond to an urgent question on the issue in Parliament on Monday.

"There are a lot of questions that need to be asked. I plan to table a whole series of questions and raise the issue in Parliament on Monday," he said.

"We have to understand exactly what information they have had and what the safeguards are. It's deeply, deeply alarming."

Nick Pickles of the civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch said questions needed to be asked at the "highest levels" to establish whether British citizens had had their privacy breached "without adherence to the proper legal process or any suspicion of wrongdoing".

"There are legal processes to request information about British citizens using American services and if they are being circumvented by using these NSA spying arrangements then that would be a very serious issue," he said.

I am basically going by what Kotaku has posted but come October...

Japan has recently passed a stricter revision to its copyright laws making, among other things, the download of illegally uploaded materials punishable by a prison sentence of less than 2 years and/or a fine of up to ¥2,000,000 (US$25,106).

The House of Representatives quietly passed the revision with virtually no coverage and almost no public announcement, second, the revision was rushed through and passed without council or discussion. Members of the Ministry of Education who could potentially place a vote against the revision have been switched out so there is no opposition in place. Of the public, the only major group of people who are aware of what is going on are the 2-channel using sub-culturalites, a group often spoken of by the mass media as social outcasts and potential criminals and as such does not have much political swaying power in the public eye.

As to the actual effects of the revision, attorney at law, Toshimitsu Dan recently spoke on what Japan can look for in the future.

The Effects:
1. Ripping and copying of copy-protected and encoded materials like DVDs and games is no longer considered "for personal use" and is punishable.
2. The sale of software and hardware that circumvents copy protection and access protections is forbidden.
3. The intentional download of illegally uploaded materials is now punishable.

Basically, according to Toshimitsu Dan, video sites like YouTube and Nico Nico Douga that download temporary data to your computer will potentially be targets for regulation in Japan. That, and/or anybody who uses those sites could face prison time. Not only that, but thanks to the arbitrary wording of the revision that leaves it wide open for abuse by the authorities, the law can even affect Japanese citizens outside the borders of Japan. Even a Japanese citizen in America who watches a video on YouTube could potentially be a target for criminal proceedings.

Off-Topic / megaupload site is no more..
01/19/2012, 06:01 PM
I'm so sad...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16642369

Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The news came a day after anti-piracy law protests, but investigators said they were ordered two weeks ago.

The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.

"This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime," said a statement posted on its website.

Third-party sites
The charges included copyright infringement, conspiracies to commit racketeering, copyright infringement and money laundering.

A federal court in Virginia ordered that 18 domain names associated with the Hong Kong-based firm be seized.

The Justice Department said that more than 20 search warrants had been executed in nine countries, and that approximately $50m in assets had been seized.

It claimed that the accused had pursued a business model designed to promote the uploading of copyrighted works.

"The conspirators allegedly paid users whom they specifically knew uploaded infringing content and publicised their links to users throughout the world," a statement said.

"By actively supporting the use of third-party linking sites to publicise infringing content, the conspirators did not need to publicise such content on the Megaupload site.

"Instead, the indictment alleges that the conspirators manipulated the perception of content available on their servers by not providing a public search function on the Megaupload site and by not including popular infringing content on the publicly available lists of top content downloaded by its users."

Before it was shut down the site posted a statement saying the allegations against it were "grotesquely overblown".

"The fact is that the vast majority of Mega's internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay," it added.

"If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch."

Blackouts
The announcement came a day after thousands of websites took part in a "blackout" to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa).

The US Chamber of Commerce has defended the proposed laws saying that enforcement agencies "lack the tools" to effectively apply existing intellectual property laws to the digital world.

Industry watchers suggest this latest move may feed into the wider debate.

"Neither of the bills are close to being passed - they need further revision. But it appears that officials are able to use existing tools to go after a business alleged to be inducing piracy," said Gartner's media distribution expert Mike McGuire.

"It begs the question that if you can find and arrest people who are suspected to be involved in piracy using existing laws, then why introduce further regulations which are US-only and potentially damaging."

ooookay...  So lately I've been itching to play this game for a while (since I have great fondness for this game considering it practically sold me on the pc engine and was one of the first games I purchased alongside my spanking cute console back in 1987) so inserting the game into console behold.. I was greeted with a black screen.. :o

This only seems to happen with this particular title all the other hucards seem fine.. so thinking that this particular card has died (and trying this on another pc engine and still having no luck) .. I pop onto ebay and purchase another.

IMG

about 2 weeks have passed and a new copy arrives... pop it into the console and guess what? a black screen appears..  :(

Black screen of death ??
IMG

anyway.. while switching between the pc engine's and inserting the yokai game guess what.. upon powering up the title appears, "YAY! SUCCESS"!..
IMG

So I plug in my multi tap and to my shock.. the screen goes black... unplug the multi tap the screen re-appears.. so I try it with the single controller and hey presto it works..

IMG

What is with this title and having compatibility with this particular multi tap?? I can't try it with any other since this is the only "tap" I have. Yokai Dochuki seems to be the ONLY game that has issues with a multi tap (I tried it with other early Namco games world court tennis, galaga 88, dragon spirit which all seem to run fine)so beware folks...

this is a NO! NO! for Yokai D!!

Cave will be bringing this arcade bullet hell shooter in Limited Edition and Standard Edition. For those players living outside Japan, which should they buy?

"The Limited Edition of EspGaluda II will be region-locked to Japan because we didn't have enough time to get the application in before pressing," says Cave producer Makoto Asada. "However, we were able to make the standard edition region-free in to show our appreciation for the support we have from overseas fans."

So to review: If you do not have a Japanese Xbox 360 and want to play EspGaluda II, then get the Standard Edition. If you do have a Japanese Xbox 360, get whichever edition you like.

trailer here
EspGaluda II will be released on February 25. Bundled with a two disc soundtrack, the game will be priced at ¥7,329 (US$85). There is a limited edition bundle with a faceplate — yours for ¥9,660 ($111).

Off-Topic / Good Samaritan faces lawsuit
12/22/2008, 01:09 PM
only in America..

A court in the United States has ruled that a would-be Good Samaritan accused of rendering her friend paraplegic by pulling her from a wrecked car can be sued.

The Supreme Court of California has declared that the state's Good Samaritan law only protects people from liability if they are administering emergency medical care.

Justice Carlos Moreno ruled that a person is not obligated to come to someone's aid. "If, however, a person elects to come to someone's aid, he or she has a duty to exercise due care," he wrote.

According to the lawsuit, on 1 November 2004 Alexandra Van Horn was in the front passenger seat of a car that crashed into a lamp post at 45 mph. Lisa Torti was a passenger in a car that was following Van Horn and stopped after the crash.

According to Torti she feared the wreckage was going to explode and she therefore pulled her friend out. Van Horn has testified that Torti pulled her out of the wreckage 'like a rag doll' and blamed her for her paralysis.

Torti argues that she should be protected from a lawsuit because she was giving 'medical care' when she pulled Van Horn from the car.
