there aren't many genesis games that sound as good as Street of Rage anyway.. but thanks to the magic that is yuzo koshiro the genny sounds wonderful.. makes me wonder what the pce could do if Yuzo used its sound chip.

If you really want to make a fair and decent sound comparison.

You could compare sound and graphics on :

PCE Afterburner II & Genesis version
PCE Devil crash/crush & Genesis Dragons Fury
PCE Aero Blasters & Genesis version
PCE Tatsujin & Genesis Truxton
PCE Populous & Genesis version
PCE Raiden & genesis version
PCE Kyuukyoku Tiger & Genesis version
PCE bomberman 94 & Genesis mega bomberman

Those are ones that I can only think of right now where you can make a direct comparison of graphics and sound..

Probably can think of more after I've digested this pizza XD
#2152
This is quite a tricky subject ^__^

I would say its on par with the megadrive/genesis but I think the genny just pips in in the way it hurls sprites around (and my reason for saying that is Treasure games like gunstar heroes).  But it displays less colours than the PCE and I would also say that the PCE had better sound chip than the genny.

The SNES isn't what I would call a sprite pusher but for fancy sprite effects like sprite rotation, sprite scaling and transparencies it can't be beaten in the 16 bit console wars.  Plus the SNES had a colour palette of 32k colours and an amazing sound chip produced by none other than Sony.

My only complaint about PCE software is that I wished companies like Hudson Soft pushed the system a bit more with their software especially with the HuCARD format.  I would say that out of their 60+ HuCARD games only about 10 really pushed the system in terms of graphics .. because at its heart the PCE is a 8bit machine I think some companies just treated it like an 8-bit system.

You can find some fantastic CD stuff though..

I actually think the SNES version of Castlevania 4 was one of the best.. but  Dracula X on both systems the PCE version wins hands down because its on CD and has a much larger storage than SNES cartridge and more stuff like intro, redbook audio and voice acting

Can't really say much the SNK ports but I just loved the SNES takara version of Samurai Spirits/showdown.

take a look at some of these videos I think they really demonstrate PC Engine being a competent machine. These vids have been made mostly from ppl from these very forums! (*cough* shameless plug)

I loved chrono trigger but the only other USA releases I really loved were FF3 and Secret of Mana..

I would say that the square's playstation games are junk (only thought FF7 and FF9 were ok)

but going back to the topic bahumat lagoon, seiken densetsu 3, Treasure Hunter G and FFV I wished got a western release.
#2154
got to the last boss fight in Schubibinman.. anyone have any tips on how to beat that big jumping red skull thing that shoots lazers that bounce around the screen ?  >__<
#2155
currently really enjoying the music to NCS Schubibinman
#2156
was playing galaga 88 on PCE and just completed it *feels chuffed*
#2157
when I first got my pc engine 2nd I too cleaned everything including getting a q-tip and with a lil' drop of solvent cleaned the inside card slot of the pc engine (which is risky)!

this may or may not be of much use but I remember one time I had really bad flicker with Parasol Stars which I wondered what the hell is wrong with my machine now...  but it turned out that the voltage had been adjusted on my power supply (I got one of those universal power supply things) and turning back up to 9 volts it worked fine again..
#2158
sounds like it needs cleaning..  I just give mine a quick rub with a lil'drop white spirit onto cloth or tissue.

You need to make sure its very dry before loading it up..  I sometimes get a white screen doing this but rubbing it again with dry tissue or cloth and the problem goes and it works everytime now for me.
#2159
Hey Ninja S.

Are you gonna go upgrade to Director on youtube ??

I know that you can upload vids well over 10 mins long and I was wondering what on earth to upload.. and the other problem is that my crappy video capture card goes out of sync with audio and picture when its over a certain time limit.. >__<

I don't think theres ever been a battery

I think how its accessed. is that you nee to have either  a Ten no koe bank or the CD-ROM back up and from those you can copy/store it into the RAM of the populous card but I don't think it directly saves into the HuCARD.  But this is just a theory as I don't have any cd rom units at the moment.

There's never been anything in that round hole thingy.
/IMG_0054.jpg

/IMG_0057.jpg

And that sealant its really hard and can't be peeled.  I wonder why that 3rd bank at the bottom is empty.

#2163
downloaded and listening to it right now ^_^
#2164
oh and Dragon Saber isn't so bad I think you need to press RUN and SELECT 37 times for vertical mode.

Some two player co-op vides of Dragon Saber.

stages 1 & 2
stages 3 & 4
stages 5 & 6
stages 7... although didn't make it to the last two stages.  (stage 7 has an amazing amount of sprites moving around its almost like a Sega Saturn O_O)
#2165
yea I used to play it like that too but I just can't be bothered to press RUN & SELECT 57 times .. ><
#2166
this is an old thread but I made some new dragon spirit pce videos if anyone wants to watch em XD
area 2
area 3
area 4
area 5
area 6
areas 7& 8 although I couldn't reach the end of no.8 just watch as I fail!
btw has anyone ever played the original dragon spirit arcade or NES versions?? I wonder why the PCE is a much slower pace.. although its just as hard.
#2167
if gradius is giving you a hard time then salamander will definitely make you screaaaaaammmm!!!!

that level with the maoi heads theres a hidden warp there..
old video showing just that:
Dunno if u wanna check out some of these older salamander videos too:
#2168
oh La Pucelle is a nice game.. but you need to spend hours just to level up your characters... I think chapter 4 was pretty hard.

I just sold my PS2 recently.. most of this generation's games just don't do anything for me..

I'm only playing the retro stuff and Nintendo DS..

Animal Crossing and Dr Kawashima's brain training
#2169
I wished the character had faster movement in that night creatures.. it looks like it coulda had a great potential to be a castlevania clone.

I got some namco stuff up.

yokai douchuuki
splatterhouse
genpei toumaden
beraboh man
#2170
yup PCE.. its just too cute !!
#2171
if you still undecided on gradius and salamander u can look at some of these vids..they were captured on a really cheap video capture card and some of the sprites go missing but its not a fault of the pc engine >__<
#2172
Gaijin is right Hit Japan 's grading is a bit inconsistent but I've really had no problems from him and even my pc engine came from him.. (and I think he sold my one  underpriced)!

Dream stars is very impressive and I gotta love that pink paper thats used with all the emotes and sticky labels XD but again D.S. is quite expensive.

But you know.. if in doubt just asked the seller.
#2173
some new gradius movies for the PCE.

PCE's intro & level 1
levels 5 & 6
levels 7 & 8
#2174
Salamander might give you high blood pressure and you might need some thing to calm the nerves!

Seriously it is ridiculously hard at first but somehow its very rewarding..  but be prepared for many frustrating moments.
#2175
hmmm heheh *cough*

don't you have any credit card holders that you can use ??

This is an oyster card (monthly/yearly public transport card) holder we use here in London.. it can hold about 3 cards.  although I would never hold my HUcards in that XD

#2176
yup great new home page. and yea I wanna point out that Street fighter link too.
#2177
You can always create a page on rare stuff but I'm not really too fussed although some sapphire, kaze kiri, strider and Renny Blasters videos would be greatly appreciated if you got them  m(_ _)m
#2178
that might be exactly it!

Your PC Engine is modified to play in PAL 50hz signal?

I dunno if it can go back to its original NTSC 60hz signal then.
#2179
You know I've always wanted your site to display more pics.   Adding that youtube stuff is equally good so go for it ^__^
#2180
meh sorry but the Saga games.. personnally I think are 'pap'.. and Saga Frontier(PS) and Unlimited Saga (PS2)  just makes me want to weep...

gonna practise this a lot more over the summer especially seeing those insane Puyo Fever otaku's on youtube but my novice skills on puyo puyo sun will have to do for now ¬_¬ Intermissions are just the funniest!
you want really strange japanese type characters and lvls look no further than Silhouette Mirage - sega Saturn:
#2181
anyone like Soukyugurentai ?? Sega Saturn.
#2182
You'd have to be pretty insane to trust that buyer I just saw the 95 negative feedbacks and many of them are recent!
#2183
35 quid is a lot of money..

Thats the brand new one right ?

is that total price with express delivery ??

I'm quite happy to go with just normal air mail..  I've not lost anything yet through the post and the postal service have gotten better over the years now with less things going missing.
#2184
been waiting for this ^__^
#2185
well hope my pics speaks volumes. sorry might hurt ya if u on dial up!

My pc engine is unmodded. and I can't tune it into the TVs at all!
/IMG_0192.jpg

With AV booster attached to the back I got picture, colour and sound.
/IMG_0194.jpg

and it works on the TV downstairs too and music sounds nice and loud when hooked to the amp.
/IMG_0197.jpg

/IMG_0199.jpg

/IMG_0198.jpg

and if u wanna see it in motion, selec the link below (thats filmed from the TV downstairs too)
#2186
1388300 on parodius special stage
#2187
I guess the Wii controller looks strange but then the games are written to take advantage of its uniqueness.. otherwise there's this for the less adventurous :

IMG
#2188
hmmm yea its not bad but I wouldn't class it as a must own.. its alright for short 5 min's play..

I thought the best bits about the game was the sprites since they are huge.

Worst gotta be the really tinny sound.

there's always been a bit I think it's on lvl 3 that I could never get past.
#2189
>_< riot zone.. woulda been better if they gotten the lisence to do Final Fight!

meh I was hoping to try and complete some of these games but I wasn't feeling the magic..

dragon spirit
dragon saber
pc denjin hucard  (isnt the usa version censored)?
pc kid
pc kid 2
#2190
I tried that final match tennis on emulation.  Its good but I find the ball moves too fast for my liking.

I prefer the simple playability of World Court and I kinda really love the simplistic but cute graphics too.
#2191
hai hai I too think its overpriced.

Again I'll wait a few years for the price to drop and wait for sony to bring out a small redesigned model like they've done already with the previous two consoles.

I'm more interested in getting 360 and wii for now since those are much much cheaper
#2192
fighting vipers on sega saturn featuring pepsi man
princess crown sega saturn
Darkstalkers vampire hunter sega saturn
dead or alive sega saturn
street fighter zero 3 sega saturn (hmm are those sprites bigger than any other version including arcade? )
#2193
not namco, Taito!

#2194
I'm at that last level of dragon spirit but the spikes just before the boss just .... ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!! and those stupid skull gels.. >__<

Also trying to complete Valkyrie no densetsu but that last boss .........   i feel the veins in my necks gonna burst >__<;
#2195
I got some HES stuff from there ^__^

twin bee is alright.. its not my favourite mostly because I'm a graphics whore and while stages 3, 5 and 6 look almost arcade perfect, 1,2 and 4 coulda have a be more elbow grease put into them...and I wish there was an option to reduce the vol. of the sound effects as well but those are my only gripes. It would also have been nice if twin bee coulda been an 8Mbit HuCARD too!

Speaking of Parodius I love that! although most consider the Super Famicon as the best I know there are things absent in there that are present in the PCE version..

Current working out the special stage and my max score on that so far is:

1,388,300

I know that the following bosses appear when you score is around:

6,000,000 = pirate penguin
7,000,000 = american eagle
8,000,000 - ghost geisha

but I've never been able to get 9 mill or higher.. >_< anyone else gotten past that an can tell me what other bosses appear??

Reason why I wanna know is that on the Parodius HES file there are 3 tracks that don't appear in any of the stages ingame and I would love to find out what they belong to.

These are the mysterious music tracks hidden in the HuCARD they must belong to a boss or something O_o

O_o oo speaking of neo geo games theres a anime intro on the sega saturn version of Twinkle Star Sprites that I'm pretty sure only exists on the Saturn. (you gonna need to turn the vol up).
wow 110 meg download for that magi lord...  (hmm woulda been nice if hudson brought Magicians lord out for the pce arcade card)

after watching that vid wow that player killed the bosses off sooo fast with 3~4 hits O_o

hehe since I'm currently on a Salamander/Konami high..

I just managed to complete this game.. ugghh definitely a game that you have to memorise things as well as testing the old noggin's reflexes!

nice konami artwork in the manual:
/salamander.jpg

well..., spent years passing this up mostly because I thought "this isn't arcade perfect" meant it wasn't any good and Konami had short changed PCE fans.. well how wrong was I.. its wonderful and I'm currently having a whirlwind romance with it ^__^

oringal PCE konami flier:
/konamiinfo.jpg

Honestly, when you get over that initial dissappointment let alone get pass stage one you will really enjoy this game! (and destroying Zelos the final boss is different from the arcade too although I may need to double check this on Mame).

hmm until the arrival of the life force/salamander packs on the Saturn/PSX..  unless you could find the sharp X68000 version (let alone afford it) the PCE was as close as you could get to arcade Salamander.  Although its not 100% arcade perfect Konami have given PCE fans their own unique conversion!

anyway the main point of this thread (and I don't know how long its gonna last) XD  is to inform of the amazing music Konami put into this game and the PCE version which they have given us our "special" renditions of the arcade theme tunes ^__^

The PC Engine has a great sound chip.  If you got the right hook up's (and older seems to be better for these game systems) you should do it justice.
/IMG_0106.jpg

I don't know if I'm allowed to host these for very long but you can listen to the stonking PCE mp3 tracks I've ripped (with help from yame emu. and nero's wave editor) Since PCE Salamander doesn't have a sound test option.  I'm using the ROM file (UNLESS SOMEONE KNOW'S ANY SALAMANDER CHEAT CODES PLEASE TELL ME)!!  Konami have even added a couple of tracks not found on any over port.

I love the arcade original and I think the PCE version is just as amazing.
I might try and get the MSX SSC version if I can find out how to do it.

Good luck completing this game as the last boss requires different tactics from the arcade original!

Gokujo parodius, Jikkyou Osyarberi Parodius, Sexy Parodius, Cotton 2
Cotton Boomerang.

Rockman games are too hard!  I've don't think I've ever completed any.. >_<
#2200
yea the pc engine is 'real' but I'm using A/V booster and hooked it up to an amplifier.

and Yes! I love those drum beats and Konami did use the same ones in their other games but I think Salamander just has it playing out more forceful!

I'm not really using a true camcorder. I 've recorded it using canon ixus I zoom digital camera but personally I think the results are pretty good.

I've only used a real camcorder twice .. the frame rate and sound quality are much better but the resolution when its uploaded to you tube is lame. you can see those here:

parodius pc engine.. but its not hooked up to the amplifier downstairs:
Radiant silvergun sega saturn clip:
so I'm gonna be sticking with the canon till I can get off my ass and buy a capture card.
