Just as the title says. Blatant copy of the youtube thread. I'm huge on music and have noticed a lot from others talking about bands and musicians/composers. So...post what you're currently listening too! Even if it's video game music, post it! Guess I'll get it started.
Listening to one of the new songs from a band called Cynic. Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy (https://youtu.be/bKqvViz4jes#ws)
Also I've been on a Sega game music kick. Here's one from my favorite Sega Arcade game. http://youtu.be/VcEDEGeRlcg#
I'm listening to the Drac X game CD. Its halloween time so of course I must listen to it!
From Hollywood, GunsN'Roses.....
That Quartet song rocks!! Downloading now....
Recently I got a bunch of Japanese darkwave/E.B.M./electro and have been listening to that. I especially am loving Blood's last album, Lost Sky, the latest album from GPKism, along with the several-years-old debut from Sawdust in Me. Here are samples:
Blood - "Lost Sky [Marlee Remix]" http://youtu.be/gs5XIdJxn6Q
GPKism - "Desiderium" http://youtu.be/HR6Rbe_f_GE
Sawdust in Me - "Tiny" http://youtu.be/3DddikxLdPI (can't find any good videos with their newer stuff, but this gives the idea)
I also put Final Fantasy 6 & Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on in the background while doing my hardware design homework earlier.
FF USA - "Mountain Range" http://youtu.be/39a73uFFvkI (Been one of my favourites since I was a kid.)
I have a MIDI version of Quartet on my ipod that I listen to frequently because it is awesome!
Castlevania music is great too.
I have been playing Drum Mania lately and really like the song "Black Out" by Be For U

Great topic Geise!! I've been listening to music from this hard rock band from Spain: Mago de Oz. They have a very unique and awesome sound. Many of their songs have violins and flutes playing alongside electric guitars, which is the case with my favorite of theirs:
Alma: http://youtu.be/RSNuhoUXing
Other ones that I love are
Molinos de Viento: http://youtu.be/l6A3Z-gpkJQ
Van a Rodar Cabezas (wicked violin solo at 3:13 :)): http://youtu.be/U0fD30GcHN4
Fiesta Pagana: http://youtu.be/XTO-toY3Wao
Thanks Chany! That band sounds amazing. Sort of sounds like something out of an Ys game a little bit. That's one more reason I started this thread. We can help each other find awesome music! I have a real open mind with music. I listen to everything from metal, to classical, to Zappa and David Lee Roth haha.
I know people are going to make fun of me, but I can't stop listening to "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears. Ever since I watched Donnie Darko a couple weeks back.....

Missed out on the one-night only Screeching Weasel show in Chicago, because no one wanted to go with me... so I guess I'll just have to listen to it instead.

Gift of Gab has another one coming?!? How'd I miss that? Still haven't picked up J-lives or Freestyle Fellowships new one, but, that's what I'd be listening to right now if I did. I did however listen to a friend whom I went to school with, hooked me up with a couple of cd's, his name is 3ize, pretty tight what I've heard so far(don't know the name of the album, it's just a cd with lips on it).

Today I've been in a Prog/Jazz/Fusion mood. Rocked out my favorite album by Mats/Morgan band. The keyboardist and Drummer played with Zappa when they were teenagers. So, they have a pretty heavy Zappa influence in their music. http://youtu.be/DVCTeCRu7Bg Keyboardist is Mats Oberg, Drummer is Morgan Agren, Jonas Knutson on crazy awesome Sax. Haha I bet most will hate this stuff. Thought I'd still share anyways. Here's them live playing Pee Wee Ellis's song Chicken, but adding their own flare too it.
I'm listening to an ambient album by the artist SleepResearch_Facility. Its titled Nostromo and is based on the sounds from the first 8 minutes of the movie Alien and it is absolutely brilliant!

back to listening to the Scott Pilgram soundtrack... a lot of good stuff there and a good driving tune... :)

I picked up Primus' most recent album last night (Amazon has it for $4 as a digital download: http://www.amazon.com/Green-Naugahyde/dp/B005IEF27O/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320371560&sr=301-1) so I've been listening to that. It's no Frizzle Fry or Sailing the Seas of Cheese (or even Pork Soda), but it's growing on me. A couple of the tracks sound very similar to other stuff they've done on earlier studio records, but I'm digging it, all in all. It's too bad Tim Alexander isn't drumming with them (again).

The other two songs I used to kick off the show were:
Body Count - Street Lobotomy (Love this band...)

Andrew W.K. - It's Time to Party (This album just made college fun, and he's AWESOME to see live).

How many of you guys actually knew this song was about bukkake?
Finally.. RIP Flattus Maximus (Cory Smoot). I make sure to see GWAR once a year, and this guy could really play.
http://youtu.be/wESpXvwHloc
Yeah it sure as hell is sad to hear about Smoot. I used to love seeing GWAR live.
rolfmao: I love Primus and had no idea they had a new album out! I actually really liked Anti Pop. The new one sounds decent, but it's hard to tell from those short sound clips on Amazon. I totally agree on Frizzle Fry and Sailing the Seas of Cheese as their top albums. I didn't care for Pork Soda much. Thought it was a tad boring. I will definitely check out their new one! Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know that about Smoot. Back in the late 90s my little brother and I would go see GWAR every chance we got. They put on quite the memorable show!
geise: Did you ever listen to their follow-up to Anti-Pop "Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People"? Their old drummer, Tim was back for that one (a 6-song EP), but I didn't care for it. I think their music style at Pork Soda started to shift from a funky-thrashy sound to more of a long, laid-back psychedelic aural trip and, while some of it is neat, it never really gelled with me like their older stuff.
This new album is growing on me. For $4 it's hard to go wrong, imo. ;)

I can't speak for the others, but I love Genesis. One of my all time favorite live shows was seeing Peter Gabriel in '94.
Genesis is the tits. I have tons of their songs in FLAC. Btw, can we spell "to" correctly? =)

Aha! This catchy tune..... http://youtu.be/M-9gW5BzFDg
I'm a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and Gabriel-era Genesis. I too enjoy the back side of Invisable Touch, but that album was kind of the death note for the band. People tend to be quite emotional about it.
It's kind of like Metalica's black album...although probably not that bad. Genesis went from a great prog rock band to a mediocre pop band. Metallica went from being so awesome and transformative that they were thought of as the future, possibly savior, of all metal to being...Satan's wet dream, spawning a million shitty NuRock bands that completely killed off anything like quality mainstream rock and roll.
Btw, today I'm listening to Lateef the Truthspeaker's first full length album. Why did this take so damned long to come about?

I got my LE of Doomtree's No Kings. Its fucking bad to the bone, and getting pretty popular, for that kind of record anyway. The fans seem to love it and it got an A- on the AV Club. I think there is a new POS coming out early next year too, so fans of twin cities hiphop should be happy for a while.
Anyone interested in the massive heap of work that is the Doomtree collective can check some of it out at Doomtree.net. You can stream No Kings for free here: http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/14

In many ways Erasure is the best they've ever been, but I think most of their fans gave up after the one-two punch of the cover album and the live album. Those two were...not so good. Their last four regular albums were really good though.
Pet Shop Boys aren't putting out as many "regular" albums as they used to. The last one was Yes (2009) which was...uneven. Some great songs, some other stuff that wouldn't pass as a b-side for them back in the day. Mainly everything from them lately is just too damned soft. I don't need a CD from them with 5 ballads on it. They are also doing stuff like soundtracks for ballets, Battleship Potemkin, etc witch is really
cool, but again, not my thing.

Awesome, thanks for the scoop. I think we see eye-to-eye on this stuff (seriously!) so I'll just throw out a general "I concur" because I was nodding my head with every point you made.
It's funny, because I feel that Erasure, PSB, (let's throw Depeche Mode in there, too) have created some truly fantastic stuff after their 1980's height of popularity.
Anyway, I looked briefly at the Erasure and PSB discographies (plural spelling?) and I was relieved that only a handful of proper albums were released. This makes it much easier to catch up with.
Generally, I have never been too excited by albums chock full o' cover songs (be it Bowie, Erasure, Duran Duran, etc.)... but Martin Gore's EP (Counterfeit) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterfeit_e.p.) is truly a gem (I'm betting you may have heard it already). I wish all cover songs could get my juices flowing like these tracks.
Also, to come full-circle: I remember really liking (OK, loving) Erasure's Abba homage (I ate it up when it was originally released). However, I must admit that I don't think think these Abba covers are nearly as great these days...perhaps because I now wish the covers were more inspired/creative...
Also, I wasn't as familiar with Abba back when I first heard Erasure's covers.
[end of tangent]

Random thoughts based on the list of bands:
Try
Fun Boy 3 (1982) when you're sick of rut The Specials get themselves into (hey, I love 'em, don't worry, it's just refreshing to see Mr. Youknowho doing something so awesome like Fun Boy 3). Sadly, the other FB3 stuff is major suckage (barring an odd track here or there).
Speaking of "only one awesome album", Bad Brains fell into it as well. I Against I is one of the best albums of all time, by any band. Love that. If only they were able to harness 25% of that greatness and have some other decent releases.
Operation Ivy = Mario Kart because I used to play entire albums when playing marathon sessions on the SNES with family/friends. Negative Approach, All, Bold, Stevie Wonder, Depeche Mode, Yaz, Human League, Born Against, Moss Icon, Man is the Bastard, Gary Numan, Smiths, Talking Heads, etc. were all soundtracks for Mario Kart.
Yeah, I put too many hours into that game.
Strawberries is the best album by the Damned. Believe it. One of the best albums of all time.
I can't say much about the Buzzcocks because they have a billion songs. I know a decent amount of their catalog, but I still feel like I have a lot to discover, still, after all these years. Back in the day, I would usually put down a Buzzcocks album and pick up something else instead (like, say, The Fall) and I never did get around to checking out the Buzzcocks.

Two in a night!! Yes, Machine Gun Etiquette (1979) is my favorite Damned record by Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and crew. They have the bass player for Souxie and The Banshees now. I saw them on Halloween in 2007 with Tiger Army Opening (meh) and I nearly blew my eardrums it was so loud.

Go get "Singles Going Steady" <--- Most important. As far as later stuff "A Different Kind Of Tension" is essential listening, as a lot of modern punk bands have pointed to it as a major inspiration. I think I have some old Peel Sessions record with the Buzzcocks, too, that I haven't listened to in eons. Problem is, I don't have my records player hooked up right now (three little kids + cat hair = danger for records). No excuse, though, I'll have to figure out some solution.

If you hadn't heard, newegg.com has the "limited edition" version of Deathsmiles for the XBOX360 for $14.99 shipped. My copy arrived today. Aside from the pervy lolita anime chicks, the game is crazy awesome. The atmosphere (and music) remind me of Castlevania: SOTN.

I've been listening to the new Neon Indian since hearing this one on the radio:

I'm kind of impressed by the length of this album. Most of his earlier stuff was shorter, but the quality is maintained.

Ha! I totally dig Italo Disco and all related stuff :)
For Bony M, you gotta check out the insane "School Song" (??? I can't remember the real title. "Happy Song"???). There are different versions, and different videos, but it's a wonderfully awesome song with creepy undertones that you can't help but love.

I'm not instantly won over by that track, but it certainly piqued my interest and I'll have to check out other tracks by Neon Indian now. I like the vocals and minimal synth. The best part of the song, for me, is the discordant "noise" lead featured in 2-3 segments. I love the discordant + catchy poppy formula (early OMD did this well). It's an easy way to give pop an edge, and I love it. :pcgs:
If I had to guess, I would say Konami (NES Bayou Billy) was the source of the sample for the human punching/coughing sound.
The end of the track wraps things together nicely (I was afraid the composition was going to fall apart, unintentionally).
Time to listen to the track a second time :pcgs:.

The synths in Bony M Happy Song totally influenced Pet Shop Boys (they've said that songs from Italian clubs were an inspriration...but they didn't mention any song/artist in particular. Ha!)

When I took the x68000 over to a friends one evening, his friend who was there insisted that he HAD to beat Dracula on it. So a long while later, he reached the last level. He replayed that level dozens of times til he beat it finally. I got to hear this song over and over and over again, but I love it for some reason. This youtube video has the original 68k internal audio version followed by MIDI versions of the same track (can be played on a 68000 through a midi card on an external module) I can just listen to this song over and over again for some reason...

A friend of mine asked me if I had ever heard of the band 'Halestorm' because he said the singer had a good voice. I hadn't heard of them so I searched youtube and found the song "The Familiar Taste of Poison" http://youtu.be/M7qW44jrkkY. I liked it and when I was at a used CD store browsing through the racks, I came across their CD for $6 so I bought it. Well worth the money.

I was also told to try out this band with a female lead singer. After my first listen through of their most recent album I have to say it's nothing special and thought it was all pretty generic. It's your usual rock radio showing, and if you took out the chick's lyrics and replaced it with Choad Kroager's you would have Nickleback.
Give it a pass. you're welcome for not wasting your time with it. :P

All of their music is a glorious tribute to the late-80's/early-90's electronic music scene. If you like the soundtracks to the games and movies from that era, you might get a kick out of this. A tongue-in-cheek homage, much like the new Far Cry 3 game (which I sooo want to play!)

That's rather eclectic. And Erasure still makes albums? I'll have to check that out... loved their stuff in the 90's.
I've been in retro mode for a bit... some older albums from The Cure, The Eels, and some Frente! to offset the doom/gloom of the other two.
Erasure has a bunch of great stuff from 90's/early 2000's (I'm probably missing anything released in the last five years).

DILEMMA: Great songs are often guilty of having horrible "official" and/or "unofficial" videos.
That is why I'll simply say that I'm enjoying a great song with a horrendous, generic video.
NOTE: In general, music videos, I feel, often degrade the music. I have been horrified when I see the pap thrown together for songs I cherish.

There is a lot of music in there. Wait for a price drop. I' m not a huge fan of the gta series but I started getting into it from IV. Number 5 I really like the gameplay but the frame rate is in inconsistent on both platforms which kinda kills the realism they are trying to aim for... and the story arc is very weak and falls apart..

Lol. I guess he is kind of a polarizing guy. No worries. Even if you are too blind to see brilliance. :D (just poking fun)
Do you also hate Weird Al?
Tom Waits?
Robert Fripp?
John Lennon?
I'd say they all push listeners out of their comfort zone, but are pure genius in their own right. (as well as many others)

I am currently back on a death metal kick, a Swedish death metal kick to be precise. Demonical is an awesome band. They have that awesome old school sound. I can't stand new digital recordings for bands currently. It can really ruin the music, especially for metal. So much over production the past decade.

I love European metal too. Specifically Children of Bodom, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, and Old Mans Child.
I don't know why but I was never huge on Children of Bodom. They are great musicians though. I do love Opeth, Old Mans Child, and (old) Dimmu Borgir before Spiritual Black Dimensions.

I just imported the Premium Box set of Tales of Destiny Directors Cut for PS2 which comes w/ a cool box, the game(of course), a sweet Art Book full of illustrations, and a Special CD w/ Various songs from various games in the Tales of Series.
So I am currently listening to that CD. It is pretty damn good I must admit. I have always felt the Tales of games have pretty damn good music in them. I think Final Fantasy games have better music but Tales of games have IMO pretty damn good OST's.

Speaking of freestyle: I grew up on it. TKA, baby. Silent Morning. Etc. etc. :pcgs:
Yeah I grew up on freestyle as well... SaFire, TKA, The Cover Girls, Noel, George Lamond, Brenda K. Starr, Tony Moran, Coro, Seduction, Cynthia, Johnny O, Corina, Nyasia, Lil Suzy, Collage, Miguel Reyes, Laura Enea, and so on.

Heck yeah. What's funny is that, as a kid, I had no idea that there was a name for this genre (sub-genre). It was just "dance music" to me, and when I was older, and anyone would mention "freestyle" I never knew what they were referring to until they started spouting off songs.

Same here.
It wasn't until around 1998 that I started learning about what this music was. It also used to be called Latin Hip-Hop and Heartthrob, but mainly, back in the day it was just called dance club music.
Was pretty sad how freestyle 'died' after the early 90s, meaning it was no longer getting much air play on major FM radio stations. However freestyle has always been kept alive by most of the 'core' artists as well as new artists, and of course, by freestyle fans who grew up, loved, and
lived that music.
With the internet booming in the late 90s, new freestyle songs got released from the well known artists as well as from ones that started up in the 2000s like Sharyn Maceren on the west coast. There have been many new tracks over the years that only get released online, some on iTunes. Other new tracks get released in freestyle compilations.
On another note, a few years ago Noel was reunited with his twin daughters after 7 years of not being allowed to see them.
Noel's daughters were secretly flown in by his long time producer and friend for a major birthday surprise at the 25th Anniversary of Freestyle. During Noel's performance they switched his backup dancers with his two daughters. Once he realized the dancers were his daughters, well, it was very emotional for Noel, to say the least, as one might imagine.
The whole time the audience had been reading what was going on and kept it a secret, too. Amazing! This video is just so awesome to watch:

Heh-heh, me too... You know, I watched "Hanoi" Jane Fonda recently in Barbarella and when I heard the name of the scientist/villain, Dr. Durand Durand, I was like WTF?? This is how they got their band's name, from a cliched villain in a weird 60's SciFi movie ? Indeed, when they got started, they used to play near a famous club called "Barbarellas" and later took the name of the movie's villain as their own reflection as fans.

Yes! When I watched Barbarella I wondered the same thing! The movie has a goofier pronunciation so I wasn't sure until I consulted a FAQ—holy cannoli, I didn't know 99% of the stuff in the FAQ.
Why am I suddenly in the mood to watch Barbarella and Flash Gordon (1980's) again?

I just couldn't stand most of that poser stuff like Poison, Britney Fox, Enuff Z Nuff, Cinderalla, LOL Stryper
Yeah, there's a huge divide between the early stuff and the ones who did it to get famous.
And Duran Duran? Ugh, do I really have to admit publicly to liking them? :(
One of my favorite albums by Edge of Sanity. Haha and it's an EP. 9 minutes in they do cover of Invisible Sun by The Police. Great stuff.

How could I have forgotten their other nod to the movie, "Electric Barbarella," a fun, whacky pop song. I'm sure you know it, but I got to first hear it when a sibling bought a Greatest Hits collection of Duran Duran like 6 years ago or something.

When Blondie was touring for The Hunter, Duran Duran was the opening band and were awesome. This was right around the time Rio was released but before everyone knew who they were really.

The punk band? What album is that on?
Of course the punk band! Single from "cool to be you"
I love the Descendents! Milo was my go to album to listen to while cutting the grass for a long time. I've had that shirt for awhile too. Can't remember the last time I listened to them, let alone "cool to be you" but I'll listen to them again tonight :D
Pump Up the Volume introduced me to the Decendents. :)
I never got big into them, but I still have a few mix tapes friends made me with them included.
If you take away the goofy/juvenile Descendants songs...you're still left with a great bunch of classic 80's tunes. I'm more inclined to listen to the former these days...and, damn, the songs are still brilliant (I.e. Clean Sheets).
Plus, I wish they tried more stuff like:
Iceman
Days are Blood
The goofy/juvenile songs are what really brought me to the band!
That being said, I only ever really listened to Milo a bunch. I have never really heard Iceman or Days are Blood but i like these a lot. They kind of remind me of like Fugazi-ish. This is totally something i could get in to.

The Lawrence Arm's new album (Metropole) initially disappointed me, but it's one of those ones that after repeated listens it just gets better and better until you wonder how you could have ever been disappointed with it in the first place. Yeah.
They're playing tonight in Madison, WI then doing their "homecoming" show at the Metro in Chicago on Saturday night. And of course, I already had g'damn plans. Argh. This band barely ever tours.
Anyway, enjoy the first single off the new album:

I am mostly a metal head. Lately it has been a lot of Scar Symmetry, especially from the album Pitch Black Progress.

I have a very difficult time choosing a favorite Morrissey album, but "Vauxhall & I" is a contender. I absolutely love every single damn track. Nothing is filler. Everything is exquisite.
Also, I would normally despise goofy things like sound effects in a song...but the chainsaw on the final(?) track works for me.

Great album.
Greatest album, well, maybe. Like every track. Suedehead makes me love again.
UPDATE:
Bona Drag (let's count it as an album)
Kill Uncle
I love the Smiths, too. But I can't compare Smiths vs. Morrissey.
So we will figure out our favorite Smiths albums independently.
Or not.
:)
Ahh shit, didn't even realize you replied to this, I'm sorry, hon.
Honestly, "Viva Hate" is the only Morrissey solo effort that I've really paid attention to, that I can think of, at least in recent memory, would have to dig up more to give a real opinion as to what I like best. I've listened to The Smiths here and there, I think the only two albums from that I can remember are the first two. Of which I remember liking "Meat Is Murder" and not so much the first.
*hugs*

Currently wearing my "We gonna rock down to electric avenue" goodwill shirt right now. Great song!
Excellent song. Crazy nostalgia on that one.
I had singles, not the full albums, for lots of 80's songs...and the B-sides were not always instrumental versions w/ vocals stripped.
The B-side of Electric Avenue had an instrumental version, but it also had a crazy-kool track called "The Witches"...(or something like that)...
If the rest of the album has stuff like "The Withches", then I've been missing out.
:)
Listening to the latest album from The Prodigy. It's very "meh". But I compare everything they release to "Fat of the land", which is hands down their best album, and one of the best albums in the techno genre ever. I can listen to it today, and it is still good. It has held up well, even at 20 years old.

Some dude took a vinyl LP of Alvin and the Chipmunks from 1980 and played it at 16RPM.
It is profoundly more enjoyable than the originals (which aren't really originals, are they?), and far better overall than it has any right to be. To quote the place where I found this, "it sounds goth as fuck" and "those guitar solos on walk like an egyptian sound like the apocalypse."

Also, this:

Its so weird that the Chipmunks thing is blowing up this week. Many thousands of kids discovered this themselves ages ago at home. In the 50 years that "band" has existed...shit, so many, especially earlier on. In the 60s most console stereos still had a 16 RPM setting on them for playing transcription discs, and EVERY kid fucks with the speed on a turntable so...I guess only 90s kids and later would even think this was a thing to be discovered. That IS how it was recorded, btw, demonically. You'll recognize slowed down Alvin is the exact same voice as Dave, and the two other brothers are just hugely exaggeratedly dumb voices so that when sped up they could be distinguished.
I used to dub Chipmunks to my microcassete recorder which allowed for two speed play/record. I was interested in the audio engineerring side of things, how they recorded the music and such, but the demonic nature of the shit was plain.
Fuck, there was even a huge Paton Oswalt bit on this very subject some years back that was quite hilarious.
Talk about news cycles...
Anyway, currently listening to the 8x12 version of New Order's Music Complete.
I suppose the idea was to give us two versions of every song, in the style of great New Order singles of the past like Round and Round, Perfect Kiss, etc.
Back in the day, the 12" versions of these songs were the definitive version, and the "single" mix, which often was the same as the album, was seen as necessary for radio, videos, or containing the album to the running time of a single LP. These "extended" versions of songs are my favorite stuff from NO and something I've been missing since Technique. Giving them their own side of a 45RPM 12" also meant terrific sound quality. To me they weren't "extended", it was obvious the shorter ones were edited down. Once you became used to the 12" ver the 7" would sound abruptly truncated.
With the 8x12 version of Music Complete they basically did that with every song, if it needed it or not. Extended versions of Singularity or Restless I wanted from the minute I heard the single. Some of these other tracks though...yeah, not needed. Having heard the standard album about 50 times since it came out, I was really familiar with the short versions. I'm not sure how much that taints my bias but to me the extended versions sound...extended. I thought for sure that songs like Singularity and Unlearn This Hatred would have all sorts of cool outtakes restored like Round and Round or Run2 did but...not really. Only a few new elements, mostly breakdowns just last longer. I still prefer the longer version of all of these songs, but its not really a %100 success, IMO.
Packaging is insanely opulent. The box is hand sampled and embossed made from some paper only Peter Saville (no relation) can source, each disc gets its own translucent color wax and the standard 2LP is included as well. The odd side is etched in a decorative design that does nothing for me, but thats still cool. Black paper jackets with black poly liners...pure class, and the best.
Tony Wilson would be proud. Finally bloated box sets for washed up pop bands are being aimed at MY generation, dammit, I'm going to enjoy this cynical cash-in shit so fuck off.
I had heard Alvin sing about hula hoops in the old 1958 Christmas song at it's original speed.
What I had not heard was Alvin saying "I always get it up with a touch of the younger kind" from My Sharona.
There are a whole lot of Chipmunk covers, and these are some of the best to listen to slowed down.

For those "youngsters" that don't know the "old-folks" slang ... the Happy House is slang for a lunatic asylum.
In the same way ... I had to explain to an old American friend that Jethro Tull's "Too Old to Rock & Roll" is about an old rocker that's on a semi-suicidal motorbike ride up the old A1 road that links London to the North of England, with the desire to go 100MPH one last time.
I guess that slang and cultural-references don't always cross-the-pond intact.

Reminded me Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper in "Easy Rider" and its abrupt ending. I used to see the flyers for it, but it was only very recently that I decided to give it a shot as I don't usually rent/care for older movies pre-80's. Anyway, sure enough it ends with one last motorbike ride... The "easy riders" didn't know it was gonna be their last ride of course, but yeah, it worked out that way and then the movie is just over... It was like, "Oh...? Uh, OK... The End."

A good bit of GBH though ... definitely a part of the late-1970s/early-1980s Punk vs Mod scene.
Ignore the 1st 10 seconds of the video, but this song exemplifies the difference between to 2 styles, 1979 punk-dystopia in esteban's and my tracks, and 1979 50s-Mod-revival (see The Who's Quadrophenia) ... http://youtu.be/oZCOwnMEVvE

A good bit of GBH though ... definitely a part of the late-1970s/early-1980s Punk vs Mod scene.
Jahahajajaha... Many of those items were just snippets of lyrics that broadened my vocabulary...of course, before the Internet, it took some work to figure out some references.
"Barmy Army" is from some song by the Exploited
Winnets...I can't remember what song that was from, but I had no clue what a winnet was.
QuoteIgnore the 1st 10 seconds of the video, but this song exemplifies the difference between to 2 styles, 1979 punk-dystopia in esteban's and my tracks, and 1979 50s-Mod-revival (see The Who's Quadrophenia) ... http://youtu.be/oZCOwnMEVvE
Hey, I occasionally listen to songs with positive energy and uplifting lyrics. :)
"Time for Action" is a great song to drive to when you are happy :)
I often listen to The Jam when I am happy driving.

Is this the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack for Metropolis?
I've owned several different versions of this film, but obviously I am a sucker for Moroder.
Which reminds me: FOXES soundtrack...

Overall, Lamb of God was the highlight of the weekend for me. They deserved to be on a main stage.
http://youtu.be/hZ67H9JHAHM
Arguably the best song of the decade, from the greatest entertainer of our time.
Haw, Corey Feldman trying to be...uh, Justin Timberlake with a pinch of Michael Jackson ??
Last I saw him was that cheap Lost Boys sequel, most notable was his joke, "Build a man a fire, he's warm for a day. Light a man on fire, and he's warm for the rest of his life!" Of course it's an older quote by somebody else, but first time I heard it was in his movie and was funny as hell given the context of fighting vamps.
On a side note... After my interactions here, and seeing Ghost live, I am convinced Esteban is the singer for ghost Papa Emeritus III [emoji13]

Corey Feldman is Michael Jackson and he has been for decades. I don't mean he is emulating him, I mean that somehow through some science only Michael Jackson could afford... he is him.
Now everyone should go watch Rock and Roll High School Forever and let their lives go downhill from there. The best movie ever made.

Yep, that's the one, now that you mention it! That's not generally the sort of music I listen to and found myself drained when listening to the entire album in one sitting, but once we've moved to a more permanent location and I can unpack all my CDs, I'll definitely give it some more time. :)
I'm toward the end of the album right now. Almost good.

I'm not sure how I feel about the lead singer of one of my favorite bands playing second fiddle to Mark Hoppus. It's weird to hear him on that record.

Yeah, I agree, Ryo's PCE/Turbo versions are still the best hands down! But the Oath mixes to some extent came close, the quality is up there, certainly much better than the cheap MIDI crap they did prior to that for Ys I&II Complete.

I think the "major label" stuff holds up very well (utterly fantastic), but I can't help being uber-nostalgic for the SST-era tunes/production.

I guess I missed that movie growing up, maybe one to keep in mind some time. He did make laugh with that straight-to-video release of "Lost Boys 2," as I never heard that joke before, "
Build a man a fire, keep him warm for a day, now set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life..." and he had a decent enough delivery for it. Heh.

Is he "rich"? I don't follow such things so I don't know. I do know that he wanted crowdfunding for his album so presumablly the checks from VH1 and the $250 a head parties barely pay for the women, and yes they are his employees. I'm sure many hate his guts.
Personally, I'd say the guy had a shitty childhood and it never ended or changed. Anyone who has to harvest that much (usually negative) attention just to get out of bed has some severe hurt. Same with Paris Hilton or Donald Trump. Sure, they're totally unsympathetic and possibly totally unredeamble but they are also clearly miserable because people who are getting what they want out life don't need to farm attention like that.
I was actually listening to SignOfZeta's soundcloud a few days ago.
But today, right now, new Allegaeon album.

Going to need to listen to this about 10 more times over the weekend. Early impressions are good though. Really liked Terrathaw and the Quake in particular.
That's impossible. Nobody listens to my Soundcloud.
Mixing a full LP right now. A fantasy sci-fi politically charged action space opera in two 18 min acts. It has a happy ending. There is magic, the destruction of a city, a hero reborn, warp drives, gods, demons, and the end of the universe. Like my kaiju tragedy Be Forever Krakadon but properly recorded and thought out.
I'll probably never record an 18 min track in one take again. Sure, it's fun to record and fun to listen to but mixing and mastering something that long can be incredibly time consuming since it tends to eat up multiple 18 min chunks of your life.
Heh, I actually did. Listened to about 10 tracks. Just the most recent stuff that was posted in order. Liked what I heard.

Ah that one, yeah, I liked it too! A memory from a coworker of mine ages ago just sort of stuck, telling me if you ever want a great movie soundtrack, get the one for "The Lost Boys." The CD doesn't go to waste, it's mostly filled with hits/above-average-tracks as opposed to finding one hit and the rest "filler" as was standard for any music CDs during the hey-day of the media. Anyway, I never saw a video of this put together, purty cool.
Well, while we're on a Lost Boys tangent:

I hear you. After thinking about it a lot for ages, and after seeing that documentary, I've decided the problem was Tony Banks. I Can't Dance is his fault. The singers are red herrings since both of them are on some of the bands best recordings.
While Invisible Touch was still better than %99 of the albums released that year, that's not much consolation when you think of how many 70s bands are still making great stuff. Maiden's Empire of the Clouds, for example, just last year. Genesis could be doing that now and isn't and it's kinda sad.

http://youtu.be/AVPgxn3xohM
Some of the lines right off the bat;
"I stay inside and play games on a PC engine by Hudson.
It's summer vacation, so I can play on easy mode everyday.
Takahashi Meijin,
Raid on Bungeling Bay,
Tengai Makyou 2.
I play the Famicom one hour per day,
but I'll play PC Engine for 3 hours.
Mega Drive, Neo Geo, Gameboy Advance,
I ignore my studies and homework."
The Bungeling Bay reference is likely a Hudson reference as it was released in Japan by Hudson Soft for the Famicom . The rest of the song is mainly Momotarou related. Also, the video is weird because all of Wednesday Canpanella is weird...

It goes on and on, my friends...
TRUE STORY: Many years ago, I saw some CDi (?) Shari Lewis Lambchop "multimedia" product and I immediately purchased it.
I always thought I'd get, or meet someone, with a CDi...and I thought it would be awesome if a never-ending song was programmed for real (infinite loop, like A-B repeat on CD player, or a single groove at the end of a record that keeps playing forever, or an eight-track, but...)
There's something more magical about physical media looping forever, since getting stuck in an infinite loop in code is usually an error and not an accomplishment.

I'm not sure if I am turning into a stereotypical old man, but I have been on a month long kick where I have basically only listened to Elvis. Some of his early music is genre defining and he has some really solid late career recordings as well.

I found myself really getting into Patsy Cline, and-and-all Doo Wop, Elvis, etc. etc. later in life.

My parents were big fans of Elvis' 70s music, cause they were born in the mid-50s so that aligned with their age group. Due to this, I only ever heard later Elvis or gospel Elvis around the house growing up.
About 10 years ago I dipped my toes into the Sun Records era of Elvis and realized my parents were missing out. Songs like Mystery Train and That's Alright hold up incredibly well today. I still have a soft spot for American Trilogy and the stuff my parents listened to, but the early recordings are the real gold.
...I love Patsy Cline too.

My friend's mom was a huge Elvis fan... we would joke that she married her husband because he encapsulated the "young Elvis"...there was some truth to it :)
She liked all his different "eras" of music, but I was always distracted by all the memorabilia she had collected over the years.

Yes.
I love all those synthesizer-heavy soundtracks. Even if they are simplistic, or heavy-handed, there is something special they evoke.
What is nice is that Day of the Dead + The Thing happen to be excellent films, too.
Of course, even generic slasher/action films from 80's can have nice soundtracks, too.
HINT: Go to "Intergalactic FM" and listen to the channel with music from films/TV...lots of interesting stuff. For example, the soundtrack for "Assault on Precinct 16" (can't remember the actual title) was surprisingly better than I remembered it...it is another Carpenter film, like The Thing, Halloween, The Fog <-- :) with a good, simple soundtrack.

Assault On Precinct 13 ST > the movie as a whole. It is a movie that oddly has become more well respected with time, but it is just too slow for me.
You guys should listen to John Carpenter's Lost Themes sometime. It is music he made that sounds like it could be on one of his movie soundtracks, but was made just for the album.

I love the atmosphere that builds the whole song, but especially the last 1/2(?)-1/3 that is pure instrumental, with the droning, pulsing beat...

Fucking love YMO. Their first self-titled album is their best imo. Cosmic Surfin' is amazing, as well as Simoon. I love the early video game sounds too! These guys were just as much pioneers with synthesizers as Kraftwerk, but much lesser known in the west.
Other great albums of theirs are:
Solid State Survivor - great cover of The Beatles' Day Tripper and Michael Jackson even recorded vocals for a cover of Behind the Mask, released on his posthumous album Michael.
Technodelic - pure early synth experimental bliss. I like this one almost as much as the first but for different reasons. There will never be another album that sounds like this, ever. Brilliant.
Technodon - their 90's album which I was hesitant about but it's top notch. Best enjoyed when you're in a chill mood with a nice beer or two.

UNSOLICITED NOSTALGIA STORY:
Did you know that I had every single Art of Noise album when I was a kid? Paranoimia was always on the radio and I recorded it on cassette. I got sick of it, eventually, but not before 27,000 listens.
The first "movie" my brothers and I made featured AoN soundtrack (ha!). I know the album was "Below the waste" and I think the track was YEBO?
AoN were a perfect blend of quirky, "experimental" stuff to counteract the clinical mood of Kraftwerk.
They were easily found, like Kraftwerk, at record shops, so of course I latched on to them.
They had like...two songs on the NYC radio (Moments in Love... Paranoimia)... but the far superior song (Moments in Love) was only played during "DJ party" night and I recorded it off the radio and fell in love with it. I didn't even know it was Art of Noise.
Moments in Love and a handful of other songs (Camilla?) remain favorites to this day.
I'll stop now.

I love Bronski Beat. That song is an anthem.
I had never seen the video for Smalltown Boy until recently...it was actually an OK video (I think most videos don't do justice to great songs...and, IMHO, kinda ruin songs for folks who can't/don't disassociate the music itself from the "video")...

So, I actually prefer TOO HOT TO TOUCH if we were to hypothetically put one track on REPEAT for a week and listen to it over and over.
:)
I still like PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT, though. That has an "edge" (ha!) that is lacking from American Dream.
BUT YOU ARE CORRECT, "American Dream" is so 80's it hurts.
Dug this 80's gem up after some searching hearing it on the Atomic Blonde soundtrack. Never knew the title of it as "Major Tom." http://youtu.be/wO0A0XcWy88
I think the Major Tom in the song is a nod to Bowie's Major Tom...since they have a similar theme. I actually prefer this song in German.

You read my mind! I was playing that CD for my kids and they are amazed that a 5-disc carousel has been sitting in front of them for years, but they never knew it.
This also revealed that the last time I played CD's was last XMAZ. Ha!
Chipmunks XMAZ albums (two of 'em) were also in there.
...and Beach Boys XMAZ.

I wanted to order the vinyl in time for christmas but it's too late. Maybe next Christmas. I was just listening to it on the 1965 Christmas episode and again on the recent Peanuts movie and now I have it on my phone playlist.

I love the Great Pumpkin Peanuts special...it's my favorite one. Anyway, what really, really, really makes it great (the atmosphere it creates is perfect, IMHO) is the SOUNDSCAPE.
I love just *listening* to the entire Great Pumpkin episode.
Needless to say, this "soundscape" (literally, all layers of sound) is 90% responsible for creating atmosphere for me.
Don't get me wrong, there are some truly wonderful visual sequences... but the soundscape is way more important for me (in general, and especially for smaller-budget productions).

Ryuchi Sakamoto: Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
http://youtu.be/9vPI9MHKwJY
When I heard it for the first time on the radio, I mistook it for something made by Joe Hisaishi for Studio Ghibli or maybe Takeshi Kitano. Then I began research and found out it was a soundtrack done for the 1983 film Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, starring David Bowie and Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra) himself. Also, there's even Takeshi Kitano acting in that film. Talk about pleasant surprises.
I watched the movie on Blu-ray last week and it left quite an impression on me.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit autotuned to a major key. The original always seemed to me to be the anti-pop song. With a simple key chain this sounds like a dozen pop bands from the 90s. It's certainly interesting but it gives me an odd vibe.

It sounds generic, like it could be used as sitcom theme music.

So it sounds like Nirvana then, or smells like them or whatever.
I went to a show last night. Nobody seemed to feel that Shredders is a thing and basically treated it as 4/7 of Doomtree. I've seen these guys more than any other act and they are never not great. This is the first show I've seen with two DJs and no TTs.
