Okay, we did horizontal HuCard shmups, now it's time to do vertical HuCard shmups. :) I have a feeling I already know what game is going to run away with this one, but we'll do it anyway. You don't have to own the game to vote for it. If you've played it on an emulator or whatever, that's fine. Also, apparently, nobody can change their votes since I've edited the poll, so make it count.
That was hard. I can't pick between twinbee and dragon saber. I went with Dragon Saber.
dinosaurs and dragons kick ass.
I went with Soldier Blade, the obvious choice. Though, I'll say I like Blazing Lazers nearly as much (yay for Compile games) and Raiden would be close if it weren't for that annoying checkpoint start-back crap. Instant respawns in shmups, please. :)
Oh yea, Detana! Twinbee's up there too. 1941 is good, but seems a little clunky to me. I was also pleasantly surprised by Burning Angels... I can see why it preceeded something awesome like Sapphire.
Twinbee is really awesome. I almost want to change my vote now. but, Dragon Saber is so good too.
SoldierBlade is definitely my favorite Soldiergame though.
Xevious!
And where is the most impressive of all vert shewties?:)
:edith:
Ah ok, hueys only :)
Ooops... I picked soldier blade by mistake, I meant to pick Super Star Soldier.
Out of all of them though, I've only got SSS, Final Soldier, Gunhed and Cyber Core. And I haven't even played Gunhed.
On that list, I do mean to get Twinbee, Dragon Spirit and Image Fight, maybe a 194x, but there's no point just yet. I haven't even played the SNES Twinbee I got last week.
What the hell? If i edit the poll just once it makes it so no one can change their vote. :(
STOP EDITING HTE POLL YOU POLLSMOKER.
Gunhed, no contest.

I'll edit you, pollack. lol :p
mmm do it. i like it.
Yeah, this one is hard...Only _one_ pick for "personal" fav? Well, had to go with B'Lazers for shear playtime I put into it. Final and Blade are right next to it (for the time attack mode!). I love me some Dragons and Winbees also, but gotta stick my "guns" (space shooters).
Wow, if one guy hadn't misplaced his vote, Blazing Lazers would be in the lead right now. I'm tempted to restart the poll and not mess with it so the "change vote" option is still intact.
Fuck yeah, Soldier Blade! My second pick would be teh X.E.V.I.O.U.S., obviously.
P.S. - it's 1943 not 1942.
SSS
I had to go with Blazing Lazers, though I think it's a tougher call than the horizontal shooters. All of the Soldier games are outstanding.
Super Star Soldier.
I hated shoot 'em ups before I played this game.
Some solid choices up there, but for me it's Soldier Blade VERY easily.
Lots of excellent titles, but BL is my fave. It was my first on the system and it was the one I always went back to. It let you in nice and easy and then, in the later levels, it tried to eat your face.
Metal Stoker is not a vertical shooter. It's overhead, but scrolls in every which direction, like arcade Assault. Will there be a poll for "misc/hybrid" shooters like Barunba, Kikikaikai, Metal Stoker, and Salamander? Er... well SideArms and Mr. Heli scroll vertically too... Space Invaders? You shoot "up" into the screen like Galaga '88.
Voted for blazing lazers does that make me a compile whore

Yeah, I was about to say. Metal Stoker doesn't really belong here.
It was a tough choice between Soldier Blade and Gunhed but went with SB. Gunhed is a great game and I love it, but the majority of the game is so easy it almost gets boring after a while. Maybe I just played it too much?
Removed Metal Stoker. Glad to see Blazing Lazers gettin so much love! :)
I haven't played most of these, but I gotta say, override got me lots of fun, so i picked that one
Wow, my vote puts Soldier Blade and Blazing Lazers in a dead heat: 9 - 9.

nah, I wanted SSS
I've only played about 5 games on the list. Voted for Soldier Blade, which at this point puts it in the lead.
So Salamander is considered neither a vertical or a horizontal shooter?
I'd say Salamander is a hybrid. It's kind of both, and it's kind of neither. To avoid complication, I left it off both polls.
i only have 5 as well.
went with BL, tho i would give IF a close second
Wow, I thought Soldier Blade would take this poll down to China Town. Blazing Lazers is giving it all it wants and then some! :O
i never played Soldier Blade

Early adopters / abandoners vs. Late adopters / connoisseurs. ;-)
Hard to believe Galaga 88/90 has not gotten more love! lol. Simple as it is, its my favorite for the system. I love it.

It's a great game, and Galaga is one of my all time favorite arcade games, but when I think of the Turbografx, I think of Blazing Lazers. That game impressed the crap out of me when it was released, and was one of the reasons I bought the system over the Genesis. :)
Always been a fan of the Dragon Spirit games but I love me some Twinbee, I haven't took Detana out my GT for months. I still need to pick up all the Soldier games though, so far I've only played Final Soldier.
I said 1943 Kai, but if Salamander was on the list, otherwise I would change my vote

By the way you forgot spriggan and sylphia from the list.

HuCard
wow. Soldier Blade is on the Virtual Console. That slipped me by.
So it's £32 for the Huey, or $6 for the VC option. It should be a no-brainer, but I love HuCards so fucking much

HuCard
I didn't read it closely then again that would have made the list realy long
technicarry , they're tied right now, right?
I see someone is sleeping with xevious so it has at least 1 vote. =D>
Quote from: guest on 01/23/2012, 09:16 AMtechnicarry , they're tied right now, right?
Nope, I need someone who would have voted for Soldier Blad to vote for SSS. Then it will be correct.
I did actually play Gunhed for the first time yesterday, and it was enjoyable, but I found out my current headphones don't work on the GT.
No other Dragon Saber lovers.
JERKS.
id love to, but i never got my dragon sabre
how come?
did Rising Stuff lose it in the ocean or something like all my stuff?

I love me some Dragon Saber too!! I just really am partial to Galaga 88/90 for the memories it brings I guess.
i bought mine from DDD1234, and i never got it
I don't own Soldier Blade or Kyokyoyuuoyooyokyou Tiger even though they look rad!
Blazing Lazers, baby! I know you don't like the musics, Sunteam, but the soundtrack rocks! :P
KYokrokrokouyauuauauauauauaakkakakak tiger is awesome.

It's worth getting for the helicopter take-off sound alone.
and the music!
Jesus, Soldier Blade and Blazing Lazers are locked in eternal battle like arch enemies! :O
Brazing RAZERS
I just ordered Dragon Sabre. Hopefully mine gets here...
Actually, I just remembered... I've actually wanted it for about 20 years, since I saw a screenshot on an Amiga advert. Although I think it was called Dragon Spirit on the Amiga.

Its called Dragon Spirit on the PC Engine too
Dragon Saber is the sequel. lol
Also, the Amiga sucks. :)
Arghh!!! I BOUGHT THE WRONG GAME!!!
lol, sure it will be good anyway :D
it's awesome.
don't worry. :)

I recently added this to my library (lol @ spelling, Arkhan!) and I concur. It's great.
But not better than Brazing Razers! (IMO)

Dragon Sabre? More like
Drosophila Sabre! That cute tiny speck of fly ain't no goddamn dragon.
Dragon? Dragon? I'll show you a bonafide dragon...play
Dragon Spirit.

It's worth it for the soundtrack.
Dragon Spirit and Saber are excellent. I still am partial to Galaga 88/90 though....call me retarded...
Was hoping Kyuukyoku Tiger/Twin Cobra would get more love. It's such a great vertical shooter in all aspects and I've probably played it more than most games on the PCE. There's just something about it that makes you want to come back again and again until you one-credit the whole game. Easier said than done though! Such an awesome game but easy to overlook at first.
I was actually tempted to vote for Tatsujin, since it's slightly more fun than Gunhed... but that could just be my sadistic side speaking.

I almost voted for that. I srsly did. I love the game, and i also love tiger heri on NES. That game had sweet music.

I agree, it's a great game. As is Tiger Heli on the NES. But I haven't played it a whole lot (yet) so maybe that's why I had to go with BL. I've been playing BL off and on for over 20 years, so that counts for something. :)

There's no way you were referencing The Cure, is there (https://youtu.be/7SbCXHCnYWc)? No.
Got Dragon Spirit. It's a nice little game, and very fair. It does show it's age a bit though.

duh, its dragons and dinosaur stuff. its ancient.
:D
I'm guessing it was one of the earlier releases though. Yeah, '88. It would be nice to have some kind of pop-up timeline for the PC Engine that works a bit like the dock thing on OSX.

Seconded!
I thought Soldier Blade was pretty boring overall... If SB and Blazing Lazers were the last two shooters on earth i would put most of my time into Lazers
