Title: What should be my next NES/Famicom shmup acquisition(s)?
Post by: VenomMacbeth on 03/05/2012, 05:53 AM
So I think, thus far, my two favorite consoles for shmuppin' are the NES and Genny.  Don't throw a brick at me; I don't own a TG-16/PCE yet, otherwise I'm sure it would take up the #1 spot. Anyway, Genny shmups tend to be on the slightly pricier side (the good ones, anyway, a la Sagaia, Air Buster, Lightening Force, etc).  NES games are typically pretty dirt cheap, and shmups are among the cheapest!

Here's the catch...I already own a great deal of shmups for the system.  Here's a list:

Gradius
Life Force
Xevious
Galaga
Galaxian
Recca
Crisis Force
Tetrastar The Fighter
Fantasy Zone (both the Tengen and Sunsoft Famicom versions)
Geimos
Sky Destroyer
Image Fight
After Burner (Sunsoft)
Gyruss
The Guardian Legend
Defender II
Captain Skyhawk
Section Z
Sky Kid
Sky Shark
Terra Cresta
Zanac
Z Gundam Hot Scramble
Macross
Star Luster

*phew!*  Well, needless to say, I'm starting to run low on good shmups to purchase.  My one remaining "true" holy graisl are Uchuu Keibitai SDF for the Fami, which is rare and quite expensive, and Falsion for the FDS, and...I don't have a disk system.  #-o

Anybody have any suggestions for a quick 8-bit shmup fix?  I don't usually take to the "jet-pack hero" style ones like Section Z, Abadox, or Burai Fighter, but I typically love anything with mechs, space ships, fighter jets, prop planes, etc!

Gradius II is a cool cheap Famicom shooter.

Just so you know, Sagaia, Air Buster, and Lightening Force are actually all cheap games (I literally gave away my last spare copy of LF). I hope you didn't pay much if you've already purchased them.

My favorite NES shmup is Over Horizon, I'd say it's definitely worth a look!

You mention Famicom, does that mean you have a converter?

Not sure if you are into cute-em-ups, but TwinBee 3 is a great one.

Or just get a damn PC Engine already. You'll be in shooter heaven!  :P

I'd recommend Stinger and Star Soldier for the NES.  Both should be found relatively cheap ($5-10, if not less).

I did have a converter, but I sold it in favor of getting an actual Famicom.

And that would be the more logical solution, right?  >.< Stupid me and my inability to save money.

Well you're talking to a guy who considers $20 a lot of money for a retro video game, although I've been known to spend far in excess for games I really want ($45 for Raiden Project -_-)

How much did Recca cost you then? Seems like that game always fetches a lot unless I am mistaken.

Prop planes?!?!?!  How can you forget 1943 & 1943 (which is waaaay better graphically and musically) for the NES.

As for the Genny, i hope you already have Gaires...impossibe to finish, but SO innovative with the "assimulate" enemy weapons feature!  =D>

I also love Metal Storm but 1) it has nothing to do with shoot 'em up and 2) VenomMacbeth has it already. :)

I am a little curious about why SignOfZeta doesn't like the word shmup.
I am also a little curious of why our government hasn't told us that we're funding a missile factory in Saudi Arabia but that's a different topic.

Well, I for one don't like the word "shmup" in the same way I don't like it when people call the NES "Ness" or the SNES "Sness". And the fact that "shmup" sounds like sounds like something you scrape off your shoe.

What's wrong with "shooter"?

Title: Re: What should be my next NES/Famicom shmup acquisition(s)?
Post by: Starfighter on 03/06/2012, 05:39 AM
Shooter is not defined enough. The most common use of shooter seems to be when there is mostly shooting - which means people say shooter about FPS, shoot 'em up, run and gun and so on. Shoot 'em up is the proper term and shmup is a short version of it. I have heard of people who think the word sounds too childish, but abbreviations tend to work that way.

I don't say "shmup" in my everyday language, I say shoot 'em up or shooter, but that's because my friends know that I mean shoot 'em up when I say shooter. ;) I just don't get why some people really dislike the word shmup so much that they have to try and stop it.

Shoot 'em up, FPS and TPS are all subcategories of the term shooter. If you want to deny that the language undergoes a constant evolution I'd say you are the ignorant one. ;)

Why does everyone get so butthurt about the word "shmup"?  It's just a fucking word, peeps.  There are far worse made-up words that get thrown around in normal everyday conversation.

Anyway, I've considered Abadox, as I've heard it's decent & have yet to buy an NES game that begins with the letter "A".

Gun-Nac...I dunno.  Seems pretty expensive for a paro-shmup, and I'm not usually into those.

I'm surprised, with all the Hudson fans on here, nobody's mentioned Star Soldier.  Is it any good?  Looks pretty basic...

Well all I can go by is the graphics at this point, ya know, though I've heard the gameplay is pretty solid.  Graphically though, it reminds me a lot of Astro Warrior for the SMS...which I just realized is probably a complete rip-off of Star Soldier, right down to the final bosses.  Hm.

It's hard to explain, but if you go to google translate (http://translate.google.se/) and type in "nes" in swedish and ask for a voice sample you'll hear it. Yesterday I saw at my local used bookstore a loose copy of Stinger for the NES for $6.  I'd be happy to pick it up and send it your way if you'd like.  As far as Twinbee games goes, it's one of my favorites.  It switches between horizontal and vertical levels, like Salamander.

I know this is blasphemy, but I enjoy Stinger (NES) more than Twin Bee (PCE). It's the goofiness of the NES title that makes it charming, I reckon (shooting down formations of coat hangers over the Egyptian desert...)

Also I enjoyed B-Wings for FC quite a bit. It was fun choosing different weapon variations and the music's good.

Another FC recommendation is Tetra Star. Great music and graphics in that one, kind of a 'behind the ship' deal like space harrier.
