Like the title says - What, in your guys opinion, are the best 2D platfomers on TG-16/PC Engine?
I already have the Bonk games, Kieth Courage (of course), and my treasured copy of Dracula X. I've tried a couple in the past whose names escape me but I wasn't impressed (Bravoman maybe? Not sure.) I play a fair amount of Mario, Kirby, DK ect. and some XBLIG platformers and wondered if I'm missing some gems on my TG-16. Please be objective. If the game is meh and you know it don't bother. I'll probably feel the same way. If it's quality though please post it.
Thx!!!
Legendary Axe
Liquid Kids
Makai Prince (kid dracula)
Jackie Chan
Legend Hero Tonma
Momotaro Katsugeki.
Seconding Jackie Chan, an awesome platformer
Kato & Ken (JJ & Jeff in the US)
Jigoku Meguri
Ninja Gaiden
Legenday Axe I/II
The gameplay styles are different than Nintendo platformers but excellent in their own right.
I like Pac-Land
Yes I'm serious
Ninja Spirit is also excellent.
I finally got around to trying Darkwing duck yesterday, thinking 'how bad can it be'? Unplayable turd is an accurate description.
New Adventure Island is right up there with Bonk's Revenge for me. Also, I haven't played Son Son II but it sure looks like fun!
Quote from: OrangeArmy on 05/16/2012, 02:18 PMNinja Spirit is also excellent.
Yes, it is. One of the best on the system. More of a run n gun than a platformer, but definitely worth checking out!!
Fausette Amour is a great game and a lot of fun.
Blue Blink is popular.
Rainbow Islands is an amazing port of the arcade.
Splatterhaus.
Wow a lot of replies so quickly! Thanks everyone.
In my haste I forgot to mention I have Legendary Axe and am familiar with LA 2. Ninja Spirit I do like a lot but - right or wrong - I don't usually think of as a platformer.
I saw a bunch of games you guys listed that I wasn't familiar with. That's exactly what I was hoping for
I forgot to ask if you could specify HuCard or CD/SuperCD.
Would Tiger Road be considered a platformer? I quite enjoy the game though I seem to be in the minority.
Genji Tsūshin Agedama underappreciated gem
Addams Family.

I took a quick peek on YT. It looks like a cross between a side scrolling schmup and a platformer. Interesting.

THIS!
If you don't mind the fact that a good chunk of the stages auto scroll then, this is a gem of a game. Good graphics, fun power ups. Little details. Having a lil Hana Taaka as your side gun is pretty awesome.

Dracula X, lol
Quote from: Tatsujin on 05/16/2012, 06:46 PMDracula X, lol
A little confused by the lol.
Is it because you're suggesting it because it's excellent even though I said I owned it.
Is it because I refer to the game as Dracula X instead of Rondo of Blood? If so that's just because when I imported the game from Diehard many years ago when it came out that's what the gaming magazines were calling it - Dracula X. That's just what I'm used to. Hey I'm 45, hard for old dogs to learn new tricks
Or was it for a different reason? Just curious - I hate feeling like I'm missing something.
lol, because noone else mentioned it so far, except you in your initial post. it sure is one of the best platformer out there, platform wise, in whole history of video game, and beyond of that, ever :)
The next Castlevania needs to be nothing BUT platforms, that's it. You fall you die. HARDCORE!!!

...what? :P
Ninja Spirit is definitively my favorite, with Legendary Axe in a close second.

Yeah I was just looking at that earlier when I was checking out the homebrew section of these forums :D it looked interesting. I liked the Mario-esque backgrounds. Not sure how I feel about the lead character yet.
Last year I saw a very cool homebrew NES game called Super Bat Puncher. I looked and sounded great and the play machanics and level design were very nice. I think the guy plans to even put out some actual NES carts when completed. Last I heard though the project is limbo right now. Seems like that happens more often than not with these HB games.
The New Zealand Story. I absolutely love that game. A great difficulty curve, but it gets VERY hard. However, there's a ton of secrets (warps etc) to help you if you can find them. A fantastic game. And a +1 for Pac Land too.

This looks cool. Might just have to get it. My PCE library is pretty small compare to TG and looking to add to it.
Good thing, Genji Tsūshin Agedama is also a very cheapy to get.
Really, where because it's going for $60 to $80 on eBay.
Quote from: turbokon on 05/17/2012, 08:23 PMReally, where because it's going for $60 to $80 on eBay.
:-s :-s one at $1.25 (open bid), BIN's of $20, and $30
Even though I haven't tried too many platform games on the system, I quite like Legendary Axe and its advance-stop and think-charge and slash mechanics.
Found one for $24 shipped
Well I rather enjoyed Shubibinman 3, at least for the half hour that game lasts. It's a shame it wasn't fleshed out more, but what's there is still worth playing.

agreed, NZS is fantastic, the levels are little short, but it makes up for it with lots of them.
How did this list get made without Camp California?
If I am not playing that, the other 2D platformers I enjoy going back to is New Adventure Island or Dragon's Curse.
How about Yukon Warrior? It's the Canadian version of China Warrior.
Quote from: Firebomber7 on 05/19/2012, 06:22 PMHow about Yukon Warrior? It's the Canadian version of China Warrior.
It features a topless Mountie and moose fighting, eh.
Jackie Chan is on its way to my home. When it gets here, there's going to be some serious platforming. :)
I like playing cross wiber for the pc engine
Dracula X obviously
Legendary Axe is another good one, its THE classic TG16 platformer
Does Cadash count? Its kind of a cross between a platformer and a RPG... either way, its one of my favorites
Cadash is awesome. Of course it counts!
Quote from: guest on 05/21/2012, 11:33 PMCadash is awesome. Of course it counts!
Agreed!
Adventure Island/Dragon's Curse
Monster Lair
There are quite a few amazing platformers on TG/PCE. I think we all think Shooters first on this system but after cleaning up my game closet last night, I realized my platformers titles have grown, and now I have more of them vs. shooters!
Some of my favs:
Dynasty Wars SCD (Tenchi o Warou) - played this capcom arcade as a kid big time!
Wonderboy I - awesome, i play the sh*t out of this thing.
Wonderboy 3 (aka Dragons Curse/Advanture Island in JP) - for most this is the best of the Wonderboy series (not for me though, I love #1).
Wonderboy 5 SCD (aka Dynastic Hero)
Tekahashi Yumeijin (NEw Advanture Island)
Cadash (yes it is awesome)
Altered Beast (I love this for historical reasons, even though the Sega/MD version is much better)
Ninja Spirit (one of my favs!!)
Bonanza Brothers (not sure it counts as Platform, but it is a blast with the 2 player mode).
Dracula X SCD goes without saying
Downtown Nekketsu SCD! (River City Ransom)
lastly, Ninja Gaiden is awesome. The Hucard version is similar to the NES but with sharper graphics, and ability to choose to play in 3 languages (JP, English or Chinese!)
r u serious.. that was prob one of the worst platformers ever...

It's supposed to have Prince of Persia like gameplay. Most people don't seem to like it. I've wanted to play it for years ever since putting off purchasing it new from a local store which soon went under.

Wonderboy I -> you sure mean Bikkuriman World (Wonder Boy in monster land) which isn't the first but the 2nd of all wonder boys, or you mean Wonderboy II - Monster Lair? The very first Wonder Boy was never translated to the PCE, closest to that would be takahashi meijin no shinboukenjima

Fiend Hunter is an excellent game. It's the closest shit you'll get to a flashback-style game on the Turbob.

Fiend Hunter got a slowly, slowly start. That looooong conversation between the player and a NPC in japanese....
Son Son 2 is pretty good.
I thought fiend hunter was shit... It has a lot of potential but the excitement is just not there... Kinda like an amped up, better version of Ninja warriors.. okay that is still shitty..

I second this awesome game! Although it is more of a "running shooter" like monster lair. Great for on-the-go TE gaming as well!

Yeah, had to get a 1.0 card to throttle down the Duo-R. O:) Never understood why Altered Beast (and several others) freak out with any other card. :?
Its like the games go:

I quite liked it; and I was just doing the emu thing. The intro is quite long though, but I am sure it sets up the whole story proper style. I really enjoyed the character animations.
You and Ark pretty much nailed the overall style of the game.

I could be mistaken, but there were 3 (?) games that needed older system cards (Not necessarily the 1.0 card but older cards in general) to run without crashing or what not. Bonanza Bros was another, and not remembering the other. :-k

Oh, you're thinking of games that have problems using US region system cards. Bonanza Bros., Shadow of the Beast, and A. III (and any others I'm forgetting) will choke on US syscards but work just fine on the PCE versions.

They work fine with any Japanese Super System Card capable machine (it doesn't matter if the syscard is on a huey or built in), but they'll have problems on a US Duo or US Super System Card.

So a region-modded Japanese DUO should play these three games fine?
Quote from: Bardoly on 08/09/2012, 05:42 PMSo a region-modded Japanese DUO should play these three games fine?
That would be a 'Japanese Super System Card capable machine', so yes. It would, however, have problems if you tried to run it off a US 3.0 card stuffed in the huey slot.

I understood that a DUO (Japanese or U.S.) already has the System 2.0 AND 3.0 Cards internally built into the system itself, so the only additional card needed is the Arcade System Card. Right?

That's correct for officially licensed games, other than the <1%* of games that have issues. Games Express CD games require and come with their own system cards.
*I think that Kaijuboy was also thinking of games like Altered Beast which require the 1.0 card to run as intended.
Great! Thanks for the info.
Bardoly,
step 1. buy a duo-r, send it to steve for a region mod then beg other users to sell you some cd's.
step 2. enjoy, the duo has some amazing games, and most of them are japanese and still playable for english speaking folk.
