Title: Is the Turbo Duo more durable then the PC Engine Duo??...

I'm very curious about this-Turbo Duo's seem to go for more money on Ebay then their Japanese cousins, plus, I know that NEC and Hudson formed a partnership called Turbo Techologies, to make the Turbo Duo.  To my knowledge, there was no such partnership with any model of PCE Duo.

Same exact hardware was far as I know, Turbo plays American HuCards and PCE plays Japanese. The way they were built inside are the exact same I believe.

Considering that I went through three TurboDuo's in my lifetime (the CD drives kept dying on me), I *hope* the PCEngine's aren't any shoddier.  (I've moved to a modded SuperGrafx + SuperCD + arcade card system. :))

I've had the same Turbo Duo since the year it was launched.

I've treated it like garbage, literally smashed the shit out of it(I've crudely patched up the back side where I first ripped out the AC Adaptor board  and then carved up a hole trying to "fix" it as a teen).

I've wiped the lense with a cloth before I knew better, I've let it get dusty, for years I'd pop the lide and forcibly stop the CD from spinning, while cleaning it once I pushed too hard and puched one of the plastic vents right through... and a lot more.

And it still plays flawlessly and can handle pretty much any cdr(although I pretty much only play originals) game I throw at it. Where as my PCE Duo RX can't really handle any cdr games.

Also, I had a spare Duo that I played to death for years and never had any problems with it either.

The cases with Turbo Duo's being durable or not seeems pretty interesting. I bought mine used from someone online which they got on release date I believe and it works perfect still. A person I talked to online says that he had a lamp fall on his Turbo Duo and melt a lot of plastic off and it still works great. Then again, we often hear stories here about people's TurboDuo's not playing CD games or having sound issues. I guess you might have a 50/50 chance with a TurboDuo.

Interesting.

I had a US Duo, didn't handle CDRs well at all [not that I cared much] But I was scared to death of the sound crapping out on me [which seemed to be a common occurence with US Duos] So I sold it [for a great amount I might add :) ] and got a region modded Duo-R and it plays everything and seems like its more durable to me. All I can say is I've never heard of the sound prob on Duo-R(X)'s. But if you are only talking about the black Duo, I imagine the US and Jpn ones are identical.
