...if it was a kind of extended edition, or special bumper volume with different and exclusive stuff?
Heck yeah!
Yep!
Most certainly.
Yup. I would also subscribe to a printed version of the normal magazine.
Chris
You bet! And PDF versions would be cool (got them on older versions somehow).
Yes, I would! It would be awesome to have printed copies!
Definitely!
Only if it came with a free HuCard on the cover.
(just joking, of course.)
Yuppers. I missed the older publications when they were running, so yeah, I'd love to get some Turbo/PCE mags to read!
Most certainly.
Of course! I've been thinking about printing up my own personal copies of all your back issues... It's a really nice magazine :)
NO!

I have a genuine photograph of Magical Chase. Yours for only $500.
As long as the word retro is not mentioned, and to really get me going, has some sorta software disc inside.
It is highly unlikely a fanzine, even a printed one, would include software.
This would be great! :)
I would absolutely buy it, subscribe to it, or bleed for it.
love em!
I'd buy a few copies
one to read, one to keep in the plastic and stuff, and one to show off to my friends.
yea i would.
Thanks for the feedback, very encouraging.
If this were to go ahead, I'd have to make some decisions:
a) Every issue is released as a free pdf and a paid-for printed copy with the same content.
This would mean I would have to drop certain aspects (like using photos from TV shows and movies) due to copyright issues. The formatting would need to change (i.e fonts much smaller), making it harder to read on a computer screen. I would have to add content, as in a new format the page count will drop due to the smaller font sizes.
b) A 'Special Volume' printed edition is released every now and again with exclusive reviews, in addition to the normal version.
The Special Volume would be designed differently, while the normal edition would remain the same (and probably cut page count a bit to help get them out more frequently)
What are your opinions of these?

Paul creates a magazine with compelling content. I'll throw some random C64 5.25" disks in your issue to make it "worthwhile" for you. :pcgs:

Both approaches are fine, but it seems that "B" is superior (ha! see what I did there?) (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)
I say: continue creating the magazine
you would want to read. Then, later, go back and grab the material from past issues that is suitable for the "Special Volume" that will be printed. This approach allows you to revisit (and possibly edit/revise) the work you have done. Reformatting for print is a lot of work, but "B" seems less stressful and more satisfying.
My two cents.

The Star Parodier review & interview definitively should be in there somewhere :o
I say maybe. I like Esteban's idea, but actually buying a monthly magazine shipped all the way from the US of A would probably cost me a packet. I'd be more inclined to buy a one-off super special edition packed full of awesome articles.
But as far as print Vs digital is concerned, it's still important for me to stuff a magazine in my bag for boredom emergencies (or when my PSP/Vita batteries run out). I just got a stack of old Retro Gamers for free, and even though they're consistently wrong about things, it's still very amusing.
Yes I'd buy/subscribe to a printed version of the fanzine.
Personally I'd be happy with just a printed version only, as each time an issue is released I print out the PDF and read it like that.
Plus the printed version would be much better quality than my rubbish home printer.

I really doubt you would have to worry about copyright issues on a small print run
fanzine.
If anything declare it as a not for profit fan publication where the selling price of the fanzine only covers the printing cost, so no profit is involved.
I'm not saying you shouldn't make a profit for your great work putting it together, just that the above "not for profit fan publication" is the official blurb.
What Esteban said. :)
lol, can you replace all the copyright material with giant CENSORED labels for the printed ones? :)
Creatimg two versions for each issue sounds like a lot of work. I'm already impressed with the quality of the PDF version and know how much time layouts and the like take. It might be more practical to make one special issue with all of the best stuff from all of then issues up until now, the release special issues from time to time when you have enough content. I'd buy it all either way though!
I'm heading towards this scenario:
Continue with the normal pdf versions.
Every now and again, collect up the reviews done so far (with some adjustments), add a load of exclusive reviews and bundle them into a printed special issue with a more snazzy design.
Sell some mugs with 'I'm a PC Engine Gamer' printed on them.
Retire on the profits.
make bumper stickers that say "I brake for VolfieVs"
Fuck yeah I'd buy 'em!

My main problem is getting high quality artwork. Even good scans off covers might not cut it, so I might end up re-illustrating some images instead, which will be fun but time consuming.

A bit off topic, but one feature that might be handy for a printed version would be a basic translation guide for the menus/skills/items/etc of Japanese language games for the PCE, such as the many RPGs for the system. That way people could have a copy flipped open to that page when they are playing the game and be able to navigate through the basic commands of the game. It could also details some of the useful items at the shops, etc., not necessarily a full walkthrough, just some tips that could help non-Japanese speaking players through the game.

To build on Samurai's good idea, you should recycle this information on your website:
(1) game-specific information would be added to a title's individual entry in the PCE Bible
(2) compile all of these "Japanese language" pieces in one section of your site...

I've reworked the sample page - it now fits on a double page spread. After printing out the previous one, the text and images just looked too big, and page space is valuable when every extra sheet bumps up the price.

Damn. (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)
I work in a printers but even near cost, the price for doing a decent 100 page magazine is stupidly high in the kind of short runs I would want.
I'm trying to think of new ways to approach this. My current idea is to have a 'deluxe' printed binder, then have 'sets' of pages about A5 (Half A4/Letter size) on thick paper that are hole punched. Each new set of pages could be added to the existing one and stored in the binder until it fills to a single volume.
So I could release a pack of, for example, 50 pages at one time, then another 50 later etc. That might lower costs compared to a bigger printed and perfect bound magazine and would be kind of unique. The binder would be optional as they probably won't come cheap (I imagine around £25+P&P).
Does this sound a bit tatty, or fun and unique?
Sounds interesting. :)
Yeppers and I would also subscribe monthly to PC Engine City music service
Here's a crude mockup but I think it could work. Perhaps I could offer a budget folder as well as a deluxe version for containing the pages.

I request a holographic version of your fanzines, in a binder.
Thank you. (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.png)
SERIOUS: Print a mini-version of the magazine (half-size) and readers can supply their own magnifying glass (but we could slap PCE stickers on the magnifying glasses to make them fancier).
I'm not joking about half-size. I'd go quarter-size, but them you really would need a large magnifying lens.
INSPIRATION: I had an ancient reference dictionary that had two volumes + case + drawer w/ magnifying glass (the print was so tiny, the pages so thin, the volumes were over-sized, too).

Would an option be to make a once a year publication with all of say "2012"/"2013" and so on in hard copy?

Considering my lack of output in the last year...
I'm more likely to make it volumes - each volume would fill a folder and be comprised of several 'issues' (e.g. blocks of 50 pages each perhaps)
This will not be complete without some Sparky numbered sticker pages!

Yeah so would I, but it would cost ££££££££££££££££££££££££ to produce unfortunately.
From the figures I looked at today, 100 pages (50 sheets) would likely cost somewhere in the realm of £15 - £20. That's not including postage or any binders. Sounds quite pricey compared to an off the shelf magazine, but when you're probably only making 20-30 copies there's not much I can do to reduce that.
Question for everyone - should I keep the printed version to just reviews, or shall I also feature things like the 'Top Banana' (versus matches) and 'Final Countdown' (top 10s)?

Definitely, definitely keep the extra content, it gives it personality, I'm a big fan of the quirky UK humour, in fact for me it's exactly that, that makes the fanzine great.
At the moment I've managed to fit in all the reviews, all the versus (Top Banana) and Top 10s and a couple of other random pages and still have 13 pages to fill, so it looks like I can add some exclusive extra reviews just for this collection.
I'm currently thinking about how best to approach the binder artwork, probably a collage of sorts, but I've not decided yet.

They're geared up for newspaper style printing only (tabloid size on poor quality newpaper and don't offer stitching or bleeds) so that wouldn't really be any good. I'm at least aiming for decent, heavy silk paper to acheive a certain level of quality and sturdiness.

No, but there are too many hurdles including the fact that they're in America and I'm in the UK. I can get my printing pretty much at cost price so I don't think anyone stands a chance of matching it, particularly when I can have complete control over the printing with no extra postage (of samples or proofs) that forces up the price. The only way I could get the per unit price cheaper is to have a load printed in bulk, and there just isn't enough demand for that.
Status update on this project: I've abandoned the 'binder' idea. Current plans are to make a 104 page book (A5 size), which will be wire-bound with an acetate sheet front and rear to add durability. I think this is the best way to do it and keeps costs at a minimum. All that's left to do is the contents/copyrights pages, and fill 4 pages at the back with something. Considering the guide to reading Japanese game names for the 2 final pages.

It's 95% the same content as the mags, all reformatted and redesigned with some minor alterations. There will also be a couple of exclusive reviews and other bits.
If this is successful enough, I intend to produce a 100% original volume 2 (as I just can't keep up with the regular issues any more, it's easier to write stuff over time and release it in bulk).

Awesome! I'll definitely have to pick up a copy soon! :)
Any idea how long these will remain available? I am not sure when I will be able to lay the money down for a copy.

Already asked in the other thread. As long there is demand since they are being printed on demand. Of course should ya need to have this and they are going away we can always find someone to help ya out. :)
Yeah, I'm super psyched about this as well, but I may not be able to scrounge up the finances until after Christmas... Here's to hoping they're still around!
Yeps, there are being printed on demand so there should be no problems with anyone ordering in the future. Prices may rise though.
please count me also in. i would buy a printed version asap. ;)
