Title: Does the orignal 1988 pc engine cd unit save?

This thing:

Does this come with the built in hardware that lets you save your game progress like the hardware found in the duo?  Or do I need to buy something extra to be able to save progress in games?

Unless I'm mistaken, the Playstation was the first CD system to require an extra purchase just to save a game.

only systems that don't save are the core systems like the core grafx, tg16, lt, supergrafx and shuttle. They all have available memory packs like the tennokoe bank that attaches to the back or any of the cd add ons. The shuttle even has a special attachment for memory.

PCE saves like an arcade. The memory cards was also a nice idea but just like pocket monsters, the more data you save, the more chances of the save device capping out.

Also like an arcade keeping it plugged in, is very important, to save data, but the unit also retains a save, without being plugged in for awhile allowing you to move the unit to a battery powered, station

zeta, the neo geo aes system had memory cards first. Sony most likely borrowed the idea from them.

Well, I did say "CD system". :)

But yeah, despite owning one (a CMVS with a memory card anyway) I sort of forgot about the Neo, probably because I so rarely use the feature.

Not that it matters, but I think the Jaguar CD required the memory cartridge thingy to save games.
