I wonder how many people haven't.
Ive only played the Sega version and I ran around for 5 minutes and couldn't figure it out. I know it's considered a good game though so I guess I should play it some more...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that game.

There is only a Sega version. A game this good should be on PCE.
If you try again, just ask for tips. It's dead easy once you learn the commands.

It's all about the maps and how to best use the territory, me thinks. It's been a LONG while since I've played it but I remember it being rather tough.
2 player is TONS of fun.
I, regrettably, have yet to play this game. The mechs look just like the VF-1's from Macross, so it's on my "to-play" list.

Sorta but it's a straight up RTS, you can shoot from your transformer but it's not really a winning strategy. The concept is simple, capture bases, either neutral or your enemies; destroy their main base.
Mind the terrain.
I do not FEKA. I only OBEY.

I was just playing Herzog Zwei two nights ago. I'd love to see footage of the original Herzog.

Herzog Zwei is a different beast, Genesis only as far as I know.

Yes, my friend had it BITD. The 2-player battles were always difficult since the split screen allowed each of us to see what the other was doing. I borrowed it and enjoyed the single player a lot. I have very fond memories of HZ as it was my intro to RTS games. It led me to buy Dune: The Battle for Arrakis, which was one of the best games I've ever played.
Lot's long ago at a friends house one of the most original titles for the genesis. That's a game i want again but i'm debating u.s or japan version, mostly because u.s version cib pricey and the jpn version cib cheapy.

Same. I have it on recommendation from a friend, but I have no instructions.

I had the same damn problem. I never figured out how to really play it. I played it at a friend's back in the day and then never tried it out till years later with a emulator. I guess I should read a quick FAQ and give it another go.
Probably only people who didn't have a Genesis/Mega Drive near launch. The drought of games early led even the pickiest of people to try almost anything if it could be rented, but the game doesn't have enough copies to go around in North America. So it's likely only hardcore players would have tried it later on if they happened to find it.
I have known about this game since its release on the Genesis but have never played it. My only real memory of the game from back then was EGM's famously harsh review where it received a "4" from one of the reviewers.
I first played it via the Japanese version. Having an instruction manual that you couldn't understand made the game even better, as working things out was very satisfying.
But if you want a manual, here-----> http://www.genesisproject-online.com/Genesis/G-h/HerzogZweiM/herzog_zwei01.html
how can you all ignore the sweet Chrome game I posted?!
FUCK
It won't load because I do not use crome, human.
I just use Chrome to play this game. My homepage in Chrome is this game, lol

Airmech?
bitch I LINKED THAT SHIT ALREDYADYDD
The Japanese version is identical. The only downfall is that you won't be able to look in the manual to learn the icons, etc.

I have Chrome and went to the page but it wanted to install. I wanted to to just run in the browser, I didn't want to install anything so I left.
FUCK YEAH I HAVE. One of the true hidden gems of era, my friends and I wasted a lot of time on this game.
Also has one the best (if not the best) chip music of the era.

Love me some Herzog Zwei. Why this is not on current gen consoles with more multiplayer I have no clue!
Just make is something like Herzog Acht, and have 8 player simultaneous over the internet on like Xbox and PS3... Who cares that the number is not a direct sequal of Zwei!
As CrackTiger said, I think a lot of folks who had a Genesis tried this game because it was in all the rental shops. I haven't played it in years, but it was a great game.
I still remember some of the epic (ridiculous) battles with friends in high school (you could try silly strategies and sometimes, with enough luck/stupidity, it would pay off).

Ask sega ? Sega of today is hurting financially, they have been making cutbacks etc.Shutting down studios and closing offices as well.
I had a lot of fun with Herzog Zwei. A neighbor of mine when I was a kid borrowed this game from a friend... we figured it out without the help of a manual. Very cool and interesting game... The strategy genre is so rich in japan; Herzog Zwei is one of precious few gems to cross the ocean.
Herzog is a great game - used to play it long ago when a buddy got it at Genesis launch. It's amazing how ahead of its time it was - it came out long before Dune 2 for the PC and eons before Warcraft or C&C redefined the genre. Definitely worth the bucks to get a hold of a copy.
