Title: is psx 3d retro the future?
Post by: PunkCryborg on 11/15/2012, 12:48 AM
8-bit style has been popular for a while and now 16 bit era music and art is now all the rage, will dirty polygons and playstation/saturn era style be all the rage in a couple years? I personally can't wait.

I fucking hope not. Early 3D looks HIDEOUS. Early 2D is still ok.

I liked some early 3d efforts... Kings Field on the US playstation was fantastic to me. Super atmospheric and overall nice looking graphics and environments. I also enjoyed armored Core.

I wouldn't mind so much if it were done well. Like, if we could have that but without warping textures & bad popups :P
I quite like some 3D PS1 games (MM Legends comes to mind). There's something about the low res which engages the imagination in a way that HD doesn't do. Still, maybe they should jump all the way to "DC retro 3D"

...I just hope they won't latch on to pre-rendered 3D sprites, which I something I'm having problem stomaching. Yes, even in CAVE games... :-k
It's cheating...

If it look good = yes
If it didn't look good = no

notice: most of 'em didn't look so good.

as for some rare exeptions, I still like me to play some ridge racer type-4, kaze no klonoa etc. still today looks very good to me.

True, Ridge Racer Type 4 still looks (and sounds, if you count the music) phenomenal. I like the original too (hi-spec demo!)

yeah, played the hell out of the hi-spec vers. back then. 60fps, almost no clippings, pop-ups etc. looked just like the arcade, except the lack of most of the other cars on the road.

ridge race musics were top all the time.

You know, my brother last year was talking about this same exact subject. It makes sense,

My eyes are enjoying that shit alright! Not the most charming screencap from MML 2 tho'  :P Haha, I loved walking into stores in MML 1, they felt really comfy. Especially the music store! (fusion track ftw (https://youtu.be/dq7vFPnK9-A))

Is that Burning Rangers top left? I need to get that game.

Yup it is.
Burning Rangers was the only Saturn game I really played back when the Saturn was new. Never bought/played much of anything else on the system :P

Is the one on the right Final Fantasy IX?  Otherwise, I'm clue free too.

After thinking about it, the dirty 3D polygons during the PlayStation era weren't exactly the things that stand out in my memory during that time. It was mostly the full motion video/CG/hand animated cut scenes. The PlayStation and the Saturn were the first systems to really make the CD format main stream for consoles and I remember being really impressed with them back in the day.

I remember seeing Final Fantasy IX/Burning Rangers when it first came out thinking, "Video games can now become interactive anime! Holy Crap, That's Amazing!".

I remember thinking that CG animated movies were a really good reward and motivator for playing the actual game :P

....then I got older. However, I still feel that about the Ghost in the Shell-playstation game

...I still have my FFVII save at the end of disc one so I can see Aeris die whenever I want.
however, now there's youtube, so I can even do it on the go!

I prefer this one:

also, Ark, I will say that her death was spoiled for me, as I didn't play the game until 2002, so there's that.
however, when I replayed it last year, her death did have a bit more kick.

When Aeris died back in 4th grade, I fired the controller at the wall and stopped playing FFVII for 2 weeks and built a sweet lego town instead and then kicked it across the room.

That shit pissed me off.

I was kind of an asshole child, to be honest.
you know what character's death had a lot of kick for me?
Shinji in persona 3, that shit was sad, yo.

then they kinda fucked it up in P3P.

I sure hope the leg humper leet retro gamers move on to the playstation/saturn generation, but only because I'm selfish.  I don't give a shit about 'em, so I'd rather see those twats ruin their market and forget about the 16 bit stuff.

they will, sooner or later.
though to be honest, I think they'll move on to N64 primarily, and then DC will be the new turbob.
who wants to pay $150 for power stone 2?

I hope they fuckin just stop playing games and go back to coffee, live journal, and shitty music.

Then you'll have people complain and whine that their DC died due to running CDRs and a whole new repair scene will pop up. And have a gouging thread for DC stuff.
