Title: Does the term 'back in the day' make you go Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Post by: SuperPlay on 01/19/2013, 04:23 PM
Does the term 'back in the day' make you go Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?

It does not bother me too much, just wondering what you think of it.

It's different for people in their 30's and 40's. Time adds up, so I mean, its one way of simply referring to something you did or that happened many years prior, like back in the day I played D-Force on Snes (I was 16 I think, I am 35 now), and it sucked, which is why I wouldn't play it now, even though I have a Snes still.

I like using Back in the day for stuff that isn't possible anymore.   If it's stuff that's still possible, and the person saying it acts like they miss said thing dearly and can never go back to it, I just think they are dumb.

Examples:

"Back in the day, the only way to find the rare magic cards was to buy booster packs, or trade at stores all weekend til we found it",  ---- now you can just go online.

"Back in the day, you were afraid to leave town alone in Ultima Online" --- Now there's a no PVP rule and everyones a pussy.

"Back in the day, importing games was a pain in the dick" --- Now it's not!

It doesn't bother me, though I do laugh/cringe when some clown says it when talking about something that happened only a year or two ago.

I catch myself saying that phrase pretty often, and it bothers me that use it so much.  I just need to find a synonymous phrase to use so that I can mix it up a little bit more.

I suggest "once upon a time" or "long ago on a dark and stormy night".

Yeah I remember in the days of old where pkers would hang out around the bridge of Britania and gank all those who dared to cross it. Oh yeah and that someone had actually killed Lord British (Richard Garriot) during beta testing UO. http://lorehound.com/news/top-5-most-memorable-events-in-mmorpg-history/
And arcades where you could pay a $5 entrance fee to play all the arcade games you want for free. Nothing beats seeing a line all around the arcade just to play Street Fighter 2. Good times.

I never considered that it was being overused or that people were getting tired of it. I like that there is a shorthand, convenient way to nostalgically preface things you enjoyed doing years ago when you were younger or further back as a kid, etc. Alternatively, before using BITD, I might've used something like say, "Way back when," or, "When I was a wee little lad."
