Title: Pedant Corner: How to write HuCARD
Post by: _Paul on 04/08/2013, 02:49 PM
Are there any examples in official documentation/game manuals/Japanese magazines in which HuCARD is written as HuCard (instead of capital letters for CARD). English language magazines don't count.

I've never seen any, which is why I stick to HuCARD, but I would be interested to know otherwise.

I think HuCARD is correct, but only when the more formal huey isn't being used.

I switched over to "HuCARD" when I realized the folly of my ways.

However, I still insist on using "PC-Engine" instead of "PC Engine" (I won't go into my reasons here)... AND I WILL DO SO UNTIL I AM AS DEAD AS A DOORNAIL.

why do some people pronounce it 'hue' card.
I say it like 'who' card.

Since it's shortened from Hudson, shouldn't it be pronounced as huh-kahrd?

But that sounds retarded, so I'm gonna stick with Huey (brother of Dewey and Louie).

Vic Tori Rune is my favorite huckard for the Toorg Raw Effects dash ONE SIX. I like it even more than Oh You Tea Rune for Gene's Sis.

I am among those who write "HuCard". 8-[ I also say it like "Hue-card".

But c'mon, "HuCARD" is like someone is screaming the "card" part, haha. Like "These are aren't like your stupid, bulky carts, Jimmy; this is a Hu...CARD!"

STATUS: I agree on all points.

ALSO: It is further proof that the media is a CARD and not a cartridge. YES, I OPENED OLD WOUNDS for some of the older members here.

HuCARD, bastards.

TRIVIA: The proper pronunciation, according to Hudson's own marketing, is "Huck. Ard." Sadly, perverted minds would exploit this unfortunate (yet, official) pronunciation.

Do you have a video or furigana or something demonstrating this?

You'd think it would be "Ha Card" considering "Hudson" is usually pronounced "HaDoSan" by little Bomberman dudes and such.

Well you're half right. In fact the president of Hudson Soft at the time was a huge Mark Twain fan, so they were originally going to be called 'Huck Cards' and feature an image from the novel on the back. However, through extensive work with focus groups, they discovered that historical racism was no longer popular with 'young people' so they changed it.

You know...that might have actually worked out pretty well. Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn are...relatively popular, I guess, in Japan. Overtly marketing your game system with a Mark Twain tie-in probably wouldn't have been any worse than cramming a million steam train in-jokes into it.
