I bought a HipGear PS2 controller with a 2.5lcd display built-in a while back wanting to use it as LCD replacement. Well I finally got around to dismentaling it. It works and it doesn't. It doesn't work too well with the TE low voltage. It's barely lights up with my rechargeable AA Batteries. It works better when using my AC adapter. Even with the ac plug, the lcd is still not as bright when using its own power supply. I still need to test this with regular alkaline batteries to see if it works better. This LCD is a perfect fit to the stock shell unlike the previous 2.5 LCD I was using. Also it doesn't have the pulsing wave on the top as seen on this YouTube video, http://youtu.be/C4DpCLM0Zpk.

These are pics with the TE plugged in.

Here is another possible LCD replacement.

It's a little pricey but looks to be a good quality LCD. Will order this and give it a shot.
If it ends up being a perfect replacement it will be worth the price.
I went ahead and ordered it.
I used another power source within the TE for the LCD I pulled from the ps2 controller and now it's lot brighter and works with battery. So the LCD from the HipGear or intact ps2 controller is a good source. I paid like $25 for it.
Here is a video of the ps2 controller LCD in action in my express.

Great thread. Always wanted to mod a Turbo Express.
How large can you go with a replacement screen on the TE? I just found one of these Interact PS1 screens (http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5638) and would love to do something with it, but it's either 4" or 4.5" which I'm guessing is too big.
how ever big you want but 3.5 is about the cutoff to easily fit in a TE. Otherwise you are making something like what Bacteria did.

Yeah, way beyond my intentions. Just figured it being usable might finally push me to get a TE. Probably better that I don't anyway. :D
Yeah, the 3.5" is the biggest LCD you can fit. The LCD I pulled from the ps2 is great. No temporary burn-ins, you can see all the texts, better blacks and colors doesn't shine thru like with SSS with the flame weapon.
I've been looking online for two days now and the only thing coming up as a search result are threads from 7+ years ago selling these things off at a discount. I'll take a wild guess and say a grand total of 6 were sold. These might be more difficult to find that Magical Chase!
I ordered this way back in October from amazon. If I knew they work this well with the express lcd mod, I would have ordered more.
I wonder how well something like this would work?

Probably tough since I dont see any video inputs but maybe the video camera line is an option. These are cool though popular in Russia to record accidents and make sure the shady cops don't do anything.
Yeah I'm not sure how the camera feeds into the monitor. I would probably get one just to take it apart eventually. As for the adafruit LCD, I just started modding another express to use this LCD. Once it's completed, I will do a quick demo video of it to show how it compares to the LCD pulled from the ps2 controller and the stock.
the cam says 720P
makes it likely DRGB not composite
Well the adafruit LCD doesn't work with the TE LCD mod.
I just received this 2.5" LCD and tested it real quick and it works with TE LCD mods. It has better colors and contrast than the one pulled from the ps2 controller. Importantly it doesn't have the pulsing wave on top unlike previous 2.5"LCD I have used. Will installed it in a TE and provide update.

Sweet news man. Can't wait to see the results!
I finally installed this LCD. Looks great.

Damn, looks clean! Do you happen to do Nomads, Lynx's, and Game Gears also?
I can do nomads. Gamegear is not too easy as you'll need board for a LCD mod. I don't know of any LCD mods for the lynx.
Looks great, Turbokon!
Man that looks slick. Any negative effects to battery life with the new screen?
Thanks guys, I haven't tested it to see what battery life is like. It can't be any worst than the stock screen. I will run a test for it soon.
