that is not so much
My son's last video game request before they hit the road for our move to MO (I'll be joining them once work slows down) was Space Channel 5 on the Dreamcast. It's not a console I have always connected, but it's so much fun to play when it's brought out. So many great games!
I will always love my Dreamcast. I got it a month after the Japanese launch. I rocked out Virtua Fighter 3 and Sonic Adventure for the whole two months till I had enough to buy some more games. 3rd game I bought was Sega Rally 2. Then came Marvel VS Capcom 2 :)
It's the last console that I was passionate about. The last time a new system and games felt special.
Ah. Yes.
Don't think I've been as hyped for anything game related before or since. And I really liked it too. Even the loud seeking noise it does didn't phase my younger self.
Truly an excellent console.
Now, if only the gamepad had a second analog stick

i remember wanting a DC pretty quickly after i bought an N64 BITD.
parent's dragged me to Nebraska Furniture Mart for some reason, so i wandered into the games section.
lo and behold, they were demoing Power Stone 1 on Dreamcast and Donald Duck Going Quackers on N64, i think.
I was sold.
but sadly, it was not to be, parents were still in control of my money, and they decided "one game system is enough" yadda yadda....
fast forward a year or so, 8th grade.
classmate starts talking shit on the Dreamcast, how he regrets buying it, since they just announced that it's being discontinued.
i offer to buy it from him, system, 4 controllers, and 5 games.
he then starts talking it up, how all the games are great and how hard it is to find one, he even goes so far as to tell me they only made 1,000 of them.
bottom line - he wants more than the games were worth new, and i tell him to eat a dick.
fast forward about 4 years, I've just got my license.
made a new friend via another friend, and i go over to his place.
we start playing games, and i notice a dreamcast half buried in junk in the corner of his room.
"Dude, we should play that! what games you got?"
"not many, Sonic 1&2, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Fighter."
"aw man, i love the sonics on this thing, wish i had one."
"want it? $15 and it's all yours."
so i hopped on that shit.
this happened around the same time that eb games got bought by gamestop, and was consequentially getting rid of DC games.
so i popped into a local EB, and found quite the set of gems:
MvC 1, Crazy Taxi 2, Jet Grind Radio, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Power Stone 1&2 = total, ~$30.
Jet Grind Radio is still one of my favorite games ever, i once beat it 3 times in 2 days so i could unlock everything.

My second favorite console and the last one I was truly hyped for. Sold off a ton of shit in college to preorder, and was there on 9/9/99, walking out with Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, and Ready2Rumble. My memories of that thing are almost as fond of those of the Turbo consoles.
Eh, I've had one for quite some time now & haven't gotten around to playing it. Could it be because the only game I have for it is Ecco? Or that my VMU has a dead battery? Or that I haven't had the initiative to acquire any more games for it because I've been more into older consoles recently? :/

Ecco is a damn good only game to have for Dreamcast. That game was excellent.
I encourage you to give that game a fair try.

Oh I love it. I played it on the PS2 back when it was newer & enjoyed the hell out of it. There are just other games I'd rather play, usually. Come to think of it, I really do need to start collecting for my Dreamcast...
ahhh. ok.
I thought you were one of those "Man, Ecco is retarded, dolphins are stupid!" people.
Dreamcast is so badass.
i remember back in college i brought my DC to my dorm.
roommate was a basketball player, said "why would you play that old thing, i've got my 360"
popped in ecco - "HOLY SHIT, LOOK AT THE DOLPHINS!"
True Story.
Oh DAMMIT. I traded in my copy of Ecco. Sigh...welp, no Dreamcast for me. :/
Quote from: guest on 06/21/2013, 10:07 PMIt's the last console that I was passionate about. The last time a new system and games felt special.
I most certainly agree.
The Dreamcast came out not too long after I had entered the workforce, so it was the first system that I could really buy at launch without begging the parents to buy it for me for Christmas. Several months (March?) before the US launch I found out a store in another part of the state had Japanese systems in stock, so I drove over there and grabbed the system with Virtua Fighter 3tb. Shortly afterwards, I had Sonic Adventure, KOF 98, and Marvel vs Capcom. A rental store near me got a Japanese system and some games as a package, but the owner let me rent the games individually, so I played a bit of Soul Calibur, HOTD2 and Frame Gride as well.
I loved the system right up until the demise, and the sudden discontinuation was like a punch in the gut. I played the thing nonstop for years, but once I unplugged it I have barely touched it since, which is a shame. I had a bit of a revival last year, picking up some new games and the system was just as much fun now as it was then.
I want to play it now, but I recently moved and I don't know where the RGB cable or VGA box is!
Also, I just got in a bunch of the independent releases recently. I got the NG:Dev 3 pack and I randomly found Dux at a store near here. Where's my damn video cable?

That is a good read, though you did miss a couple other FPS on the system. Maken X, Kiss Psycho Circus, and Soldier of Fortune. Also you can dl and burn off the unreleased Half Life and also a fanport of sorts of Quake 1 that ran rather well.
Kiss Psycho Circus was quite under appreciated, from what I remember.
It was an awesome game. I even had the PC one too.
i dunno, it felt just like a ripoff of quake to me.
awesome game - Spawn: In the Demon's Hand.
best multiplayer on the system, short of power stone 2.
So we're all in agreement? We're going to petition Sega to make a Dreamcast 2?
Nah, the magic is mostly gone. Although, Sonic Generations and Sonic Racing Transformed were pretty badass.
ok what are some games today that haven't been ported and exclusive that are worth checking out?

Yeah! The Heavy Metal game is rockin! Much fun. I don't believe Border Down ever got a port. Also, Zombie Revenge!
Crazy when you think about it. So many Dreamcast games have been ported it's hard to find ones that weren't.
Illbleed is a pretty fun one, as is D2. Also FrameGrid is pretty decent as are both Giant Gram titles.
I was a fan of Dragonriders of Pern and Record of Lodoss War, also.
but DR of P was on PC too, I think.

True, but a lot of the ported games are still best played on Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure 1, for example, has terrible controls on Gamecube and XBLA.
El Dorado Gate has the kind of visuals I was waiting for in a RPG. I haven't played enough of them yet to properly judge it overall as a game.
Jet Grind Radio blows on Xbox, also.

That could be almost true, IF I didn't had the Saturn Sega Ages already at that time..hehe :)
Also the Shen Mue (and Yu Suzuki book) OutRun sucks big times due to the altered testarossa into a shitty non-existing wannabe ferarri kind of bastard. This ain't no OutRun anymore :(
Supposedly due to an OutRunned 10 years license between sega and ferarri, the testarossa had to be changed to something non-ferarri'sh. but common that lil' pixel car in OutRun does not even remotely look like a "real" testarossa, nor is it officially mentioned that it should be such a one. It's even funny that there was a need of a license in the first place. strange world.
Wonder if they also needed a license for the BMW E30 cabrio, VW beetle, corvette, porsche etc. to let those get loose on the streets
Haha I never knew that about Outrun in Shenmue 2. I never got that far to play it. I also have the sega ages version. Not sure it it's the best port but it seems very good to me.

It sure is the best. Better than the arcade actually. Because it has awesome 60fps mode :D and arranged music..for those who like.
I love the music! One of the main reasons I play it.
The Dreamcast is probably my second favorite system. My favorite thing about it was the myriad of fighters that were coming out at the time. Also, I played way more Powerstone 2 than I should probably admit to.
All i have to say about the dreamcast

I finally got a working one and am having a blast!
Shenmue isn't crazy fun, but its really cool. I helped an old lady, and I bought a bag of potato chips! (how do you eat it?)
And while I'm not an FPS person, Unreal Tournament is the most fun I've ever had in any video game. :P
my current sega museum
i had to sell half my mega drive collection for car repairs some time ago (including pier solar) and half my master system games have disappeared somehow :(

Ah yes, the DC.
I first saw one sometime back in 2000. My brother's friend had Grandia 2 & a few other games and I played them for a little bit. Was pretty fun. My brother remembers the system more than I do though.
Next year, I ended up getting a DC sometime after it was officially discontinued (mid-late 2001?). I remember getting Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi 2, Spiderman, NBA 2K2, & a few other games. At the time, my local Blockbuster only had a small selection, which I think because they were getting rid of DC stuff. The only games available to rent were Capcom vs. SNK, Sonic Adventure 1, Dead or Alive 2, Power Stone 1, & maybe a few others (Late 2001-Early 2002).
More recently, I don't really care much for the system anymore. It really sucks when you have to get a few arcade sticks because the normal D-pad doesn't cut it, only to find out that they cost an arm & a leg.
The DC controller cuts it. You just have to get used to it. Basically you have to love the system.
I received a Dreamcast as a birthday present right when GameStop/EB was clearing them out after the merger. At that point, all that was left was mostly disk only games, but I did manage to find some good stuff, both Power Stones, Marvel vs. Capcom, Last Blade 2, and some others. I really wanted Marvel vs. Capcom 2 but never found a copy. A couple others that I played often were Frogger 2, Wacky Races, and Tennis 2K2. Even the Sega football and basketball games were really good.
I've never really hunted for the system, but I do have a little over 30 games for it. I did find a Black Sega Sports model at a flea market once, which is pretty cool to have. I have not played the system in years however, but I loved it when I first got it.

I'm a HUGE fan of Dreamcast, but that controller just sucks. I use a stick or a Saturn adaptor every time I can. With games like Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia though you pretty much need the standard controller.

Yes, the private servers for GameCube, DC and PC (Blue Burst) run really sweet. I'm still sad there are no Xbox private servers. For play on a DC, you need to have the broadband adapter.

According to schtack you can connect via dialup. If a land line is not available perhaps the Win98 dialup server trick could work.

Everyone I knew had a Saturn adaptor. The things were like...a require accessory. Mine lets you use the Saturn Twin Stick as well, which is better than the DC one, IMHO, and a lot easier to find (I have two).
For racing games the PS adaptor is best since the dead zone on a DC analog stick is like %35 of the range of the thing. Its bullshit. I have the Ferrari wheel myself, I use it for F355, Sega GT, and Test Drive: LeMans. BTW, they *really* need to make a new LeMans game. That thing was totally great.
The DC pad is very similar to the Saturn analog pad, very similar, except that its inferior in every single way (not counting the VMS). The d-pad is asymmetrical shit, the analog has a huge dead zone and slips off one's thumb too easily, it only has four face buttons instead of six, and the four face buttons are teeny tiny. The triggers are more or less the same, but the early DC triggers, the R one, would break very easily. Also, the cord comes out the bottom and the angle of things makes you have to point your thumbs straight up, which is murder after a few hours.
