Title: New Forum Design - unused space, hard to read
Post by: VestCunt on 10/04/2013, 01:25 PM
Already a thread about this here (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=15480.0), but I thought I'd start one in the proper section.

37% of my browser is unused. Bunching things together makes it harder to read and requires unnecessary scrolling (vertical and horizontal).

My other complaint are the bright colors - they're distracting and also make things harder to read. On an aesthetic level, they don't relate to the soft greys of PCEFX .com, they don't relate to the whites and blacks of any of the NEC systems, and baby pastels are kinda weird on a forum that caters to 25-40-year-old men.

I appreciate the effort to spice things up, I've always liked the elegant simplicity and legibility of these forums.

The new banner is good!

Agreed, especially about the super-narrow width. That seems to be the fad in some forums these days, probably to get it to work on mobile.  It's like the web designers want to appeal to mobile users more than actual computer users.

At the end of the day i will except neon orange if it is decided as long as things are running...

but ya not a fan of the colours either or the banner, the older look was clean esay to read and blended in to my work applications, now it stands out like a sore thumb :P. a couple days ago it was just white, i even liked that.

Arron is probably thinking.... <<What a bunch of whinny bitches>> :P

I personally find this particular theme very easy to read, much more so than the all-white one I had up before.  I won't be able to please everyone with the forum changes, but I'm trying to find one that will work for everybody.

As far as the forum width is concerned, I am unable to change it easily without extensive modding (which I have no time to do).  I may look one more time for another theme that has width options.

I like the layout, not so much the colors. It's like the transition from the 80's to the 90's...

Thanks for getting things back up online.

I think it's a step in the right direction.  The old forum layout wasn't all that great, and the layout that was here for the first couple of days this time around was horrid.  This whole pastel deal is certainly an interesting choice, but definitely something that I could get used to.  And I think everything is quite readable.

the all white was the worst ever. this one is better, but still far behind the old one.

and again please  put in at least one dark skin to choose :)

Wow.. Long live pink then, i will take white over this strawberry of my short cake with my little pony theme any day.

As a guy that primarily browses on my phone, the new setup works really well.  Only thing I have a little trouble with is clicking a specific page of a thread, the numbers arent big enough to differentiate where I am touching.

Pink is kinda weird, but it is appropriate for more guys in this forum as they enter/approach fatherhood.

I personally think the colors reflect the kind of colorful graphics found on the Turbo...nobody else see this?

All I see is shades of this..... http://www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/en_CA/ (http://www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/en_CA/)

Maybe cause I am in a house full of girls, these are colours I see all the time.
I guess I feel defeated :P

Still weaking the theme here.  Just re-vamped the banner and I'm working on fixing the user icons next.
Title: Re: New Forum Design - unused space, hard to read
Post by: PCEngineFX on 10/06/2013, 01:07 AM
User icons are now fixed (they were faded way too much to be visible).  I'll see if I can make them a touch larger next.
Title: Re: New Forum Design - unused space, hard to read
Post by: Joe Redifer on 10/06/2013, 02:13 PM
You might want to get rid of the graphics behind them as they just behind in. Or design the background graphic banner so that there is a blank "box" where the icons fall so that they're visible and don't get lost in the current clutter. This should be simple as pie since the forums are now common width.

I like the color themes.   It's some Bomberman/Star Parodier/Parodius stuff for sure.

It just sucks that it's narrow.

I'm fine with the colours.

I'm okay with the color theme (closeted brony?), but I'm hoping you find something with a wider layout.  Also, shouldn't the banner have at least one PC-FX screenshot?

Is anyone else getting AdSense ads littered with Asian women?  I use to get stuff relative to my browser history.  Yeah, I get them at home... but I'm on my work PC right now.  I'm fairly confident I've never visited an Asian dating/porn site at work.

AdSense knows you, fiddy.   :P

I get 'em and did before, but I guess they're based on forum content (game dorks like asian chicks, but who doesn't?), as my browsing history/cookies/etc. are deleted daily.

My AdAense ads are always for Cabela's (hunting/camping supplies), knife sharpening products and "How To" books on starting a new career after incarceration.

Aaron, I tweaked a few rules on index.css as an experiment and just thought I'd share for your consideration.
You're the man, null!  If Aaron doesn't see this, do you know if there's a way to incorporate this into a greasemonkey script?  I've never tinkered with greasemonkey, but this would be worth exploring...

I would like to see these revisions implemented, even if it messes up the pretty layout of, say, the lesser-used PM/control panel/etc. sections.

So I did a bit more digging into this tonight and found an extension for Chrome called Stylebot that allows you to add your own css to any website which will override the default css. Score!

However the css you posted above didn't work. Meh.

If no one else feels like taking a stab at working it out, I will at some point.

The nice thing about this extension is you can share your css with other stylebot users.  I can upload it to their repository and if you have chrome w/ stylebot installed, you can download my custom stylesheet.  But I'm probably not going to tinker with it much tonight.

Hah! Dammit, I was trying to find a PM from SignOfZeta, I could swear I PM'ed him some time back with "Donde esta Zeta ?" because of his lack of presence lately, but it seems it got pruned perhaps. Pretty sure he responded back about being busy and also took a snipe at the forum scheme/theme (AKA "HabboLand") saying that the ugliness gives him less of a reason to return here, etc. Something like that, but yeah, mostly in a joking fashion I assume with wanting to emphasize how much it is disliked by 'im.

Also, WTF, nat hath returned ??

EDIT: Ah, duh, it was on Facebook, that's why!

Quote from: NightWolve, Feb. 2, 2014Zeta, it's NightWolve! Where ya at man ?? We're seeing less and less of ya over at PCEFX. Some of us started to wonder if you finally tired of the place!
Quote from: SignOfZetaI've been hella busy. Also, the site is terrible looking now. I know that's a crap reason to not go there, but I'm so pressed for time right now that's all the excuse I need.
