This is the inevitable counterpoint thread to SuperDeadite's biased and hateful opinion. :twisted:
Here we discuss why Kickstarter is such a boon to those with skill and talent, but no money, and how it has helped get projects we love (like new games in our cult favorite franchises) off the ground without giving them away to evil money-grubbing corporations (like EA).
It used to be that the only way for a small developer to get their products to fans was to get one of those big publishers who don't give a fuck to distribute it for them, and in most cases, said publishers would twist their vision to make it "marketable to a demographic" or some shit, and in the process completely destroy what made their idea great in the first place.
Now that we have Kickstarter and other such avenues, small developers are no longer slaves to the big bad publishers, and have made fans' dreams come true with things like Wasteland 2, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, and many others.
If it weren't for Kickstarter, these developers would have no way to fight against EA and other such large companies. While there will always be a horror story here and there, it is the great successes that should have our attention.
Please discuss.
You shouldn't go against the opinion of someone who has a X86000. NEVER.
In all seriousness for me Kickstarter is a mixed bag, while there are many awesome stuff coming from it like Mighty No. 9, Leisure Suit Larry, Tex Murphy, etc. there is also many half-baked ideas with unexperienced people, stuff that is downright weird (like that hentai card game which one of the tiers was a drawing depicting rape on one of the cards based on a real life woman picture chosen by the person), and scams.
It's great for well established professionals, but is it for the newcomer who is likely to blow all funding money and leave everyone pissed off with a shitty product?
As long as folks understand the nature of Kickstarter (you are gambling, hoping a project will come to fruition), I see no problem with it. Too many folks who fund projects are confused/ignorant—they mistakenly believe that:
(1) funded projects are guaranteed to deliver item/service (and a second assumption: the quality of said item/service will be satisfactory)
(2) projects have been vetted for feasibility, safety, etc.
(3) the folks running a project have expertise, experience and/or know what the fuck they are doing.
Scammers, incompetents, pedophiles and misogynists exploit. Sadly, they use any and all tools to do so. Kickstarter isn't the cause of this problem, but, IMO there is a moral obligation to monitor projects for flagrant evilness.
