I've had this game for a few years on my Wii (no PCE version yet)
Seriously, it's like one of the most fun platformers ever. Very fast and actiony, amazing graphics and lovely tunes. Nice length too. It's the PC Engine's real Super Mario Bros.
Makes up for the lack of a Wonder Boy port, too.
To me, it's one of the best "pure" platformers ever made. The controls are perfect.
I like it. But for some reason i really suck at it
NAI is top tier action. I would put it in my top 10 without hesitation.

Same here, galam. The timer/health thing goads me to run ahead pell-mell to my death.

Fantastic game. In the early nineties I use to love hanging out at the mall particularly at the old TurboZone retail islands if some of you guys remember those (before they turned into TZD.com).
That is one game I always dreamed of having but I could not afford it at the time. Most of my early collection (a small handful of games) came from friends who traded with me for some of my NES games at the time which I had bought myself picking up trash.
Years later ('06) I finally picked it up for a bargain price (I think I did $25 shipped on it)! The skating areas do seem hard but practice makes perfect. I was lucky to have Dragon's Curse in my early library a long with Alien Crush and Final Lap Twin. Played the hell of those back in the day.
I had no idea this was technically a Wonderboy game.
It isn't a wonder boy game, just a clone. :)

This is one of the best games for the system. Likely in my top 10 as well.
Just really fun to play with great colors and music.

And were they autographed first-hand, or did you buy them like this?

not so much to tell here. met him back in around 2010 at a friends 2 years game bar anniversary party(was announced that he will be there).
so I brought my NAI and shooting watch(es) along with me, just so that in case if I had that pleasingly opportunity of letting him something to sign, I woulnd't just have to give him my shirts sleeve.
he was a very funny guy, and was such surprised that there are even any PC Engine fans from the swissle, let alone such hardcore ones..lol
This such a fun game, I have been playing it with my kids via the Nintendo DS Emulator "NitroGrafx". They absolutely love it (until it get the real thing this will have to do).

This thread inspired me to dust off NAI last night. I gave it an hour or so and got further than I ever have in my life. (Still too embarrassed to say how far that is).
I can't say one bad thing about it. One question, are the continues unlimited? Or does the game just know a shitty player and offer them up accordingly?
:D
I like this game once in a while in short stints. I'm fairly good at it, but it doesn't hold my attention long enough to complete it. It gets a little repetitive for my tastes.

Ha! There's actually a code for continuing. When the game is over and it goes to the title screen u believe you hold buttons 1 and 2 and then Run at the same time. That will start you off at the beginning of the stage you were last on.
At least I'm pretty sure that is the code. It's been a while and I can't for the life of me find it on Google. So, I'm not 100%. Still kickin' off some obey rust. Hehe. :)

Every time, I get a game over, the title screen lets you continue with no code needed. I just didn't know if they were unlimited.

NAI was one of my first latter-day Hucards purchased from Games To Go in '97. Great game.

Yes they did. When they started to shut them down they went to TurboZone "Direct" online. They were basically set up as hexagonal (or octagonal, can't remember) retail islands in the middle of select shopping malls. We had one in Daly City, CA at Serramonte Mall which is the one I grew up around. This is where I bought all my Turbo Grafx-16 systems (Deck and TE) and my last game purchased before the closing was Chase H.Q.
I wish I had pictures, they would have all the systems set up so you could play the games and kids would surround the island. When TurboDuo came out, they had the infamous Zonk GOT demo running too. The VHS videos now on YouTube would be playing all day too. Ah memories.

MG better tell us more about this. I didn't know such things existed.
never say nai to NAI!
I like it, something about the timing of running and where they laid the hazards seems to perfectly cause me to die a lot. With that said... I kind of like Super Adventure Island a bit more.
I think it is all around somehow the best takahashi meijjn game ever released. the first on the SFC was fun too, especially the yuzo music was very refreshing bitd, but in terms of gameplay, dynamics and graphic style it is unable to hold a candle NAI (imo).
the NESes/FCes are OK to, but can't really compare.
Yeah when it comes to music and visuals I like the Snes game but NAI plays so much better. It really does make it more enjoyable to play.
I really like New Adventure Island a lot but no matter what you guys do - don't play it with an Avenue 6 Button Joypad- it takes all the fun out of the game :?.

This is one of my favorite TG16 games, easily. It's the best of the classic style Adventure Island games and beats the living shit out of the SNES game in every category. The anger in Higgins's eyes during that intro is legendary.
Seriously underrated.
You do have unlimited continues so anyone can beat it. Really fun game, nowhere near as difficult and frustrating as the NES games were.
I love this game, but I do think the jump seems to be a little off. Occassionally you won't get the full distance and it seems to be kind of random. I even remember switching controllers several times the first few times I played the game, until I finally realized it was just the jump "mechanics" of the game.
With that said, the game is a lot of fun and awesome to look at, enough for me to keep going back, despite my occassional frustration w/ random jump.
P.S. - The stage select code is what you might be thinking about. If you get to stage 3 or higher, you then put in Run, Select, Run, Run, Run+Select, Select, Run.

Then you have never switched to Button Mode B - this will automatically end the level & you can do it in every level.
PS: I only have the JP version of the game - I never had the US version so I don't know if this is possible as well.

While watching the video (at 8:20) there is a Super System Card offer with a contact number of 1 (800) 366-0316. I gave it a call and sadly it's a distorted voice mail from someone that sounded like Bob. Meh, I tried. :-({|=
btw. which retard did say that it is overrated?
This is my favorite of all the Adventure Island games. I had it as a kid, but sadly its one of the ones I traded away. Love the Susumu Matsushita cover art, that's always struck a chord with me since I read about Famitsu magazine in an EGM years back (with a picture of Necky the Fox pulling the bikini bottoms off of some girl with his teeth!)
Of course I prefer the Wonder Boy series fork overall but I have some good memories of this one. :)
Ok, so after a couple weeks pounding on this game, I'm finally making some progress.
Somebody in here mentioned that the controls are spot on and I agree.
I finally found my Duo adapter and I will be celebrating with this game tonight!
...and Nexzr... :D

New Adventure Island I love it I love it I love it !! Far better of a game in every way then the Original Sega version Wonder Boy and the Nintendo's version Adventure Island Imo. It's all about the New Adventure Island. lol And on top of everything our little hero on this game Skateboards and I like that a lot because I skateboard too! It's also a very challenging game to beat with great music and amazing colorful graphics . Me and a buddy of mine last year did a level each co op to beat the entire game together. A very rad game definitely a must have for any true Obeyer .. Rant Officially Over !!
Very good game and one that I've played through on a couple of occasions. Still like Super Adventure Island a little bit better, in no small part because of the amazing Yuzo soundtrack, but I love both games.
I was watching Super Adventure Island playthrough the other day, and it looks like an early tech demo for the the snes. Doesn't look that fun (somehow I missed out on this game BITD; the snes one).

I always found it fun, plus it has a bit more variety than some AI games with swimming, mine carts, etc. Plus the level 2 music is the best tropical tune ever.
yeah, yuzo musics rox in sai. but nai is the much better and challanging game gameplay wise.
