Title: WTB the essential "must own" CD games + Multi-Tap
Post by: Ghudda on 03/11/2014, 11:19 AM
Looking to start my CD collection and get my hands on the more inexpensive "must own" PCE CD games. I don't have a real specific list of games that i'm looking for but am interested in any of the more easily obtainable shooters, platformers, and RPG's.  I'd really like to get a copy of Lords of Thunder, R-Type, Altered Beast, etc. (Open for recommendations) My main thing is just that the games come complete (spine card not required)

Also looking for a white multi-tap and not stained (in box would be awesome)

I have 0 CD games and so anything really goes. I'd appreciate a package deal from one of the members who has an absurd amount of doubles.

Looking to only spend around $75-$100 at the moment.

PM/Reply with what you have
Thanks for the help

EDIT: Shipping within the US is desired to avoid excessive/unnecessary shipping fees.

If you go for the CD version of Altered Beast, you'll need a System 1.0 Card or to run that rom off of a flashcart in order to play the game properly.

You'll definitely want to snag Ys Books I and II.  I happened to enjoy Monster Lair as well, and that can be had pretty cheap.  You could easily score both those games and have money left over.  The Valis games are also decent; Valis II in particular is relatively inexpensive.

Wait, are you just looking for imports?  If so, forget what I said.  If you can spend in the 75 to 100 range, I'd put every cent of that down on Dracula X: Chi No Rondo.  You can snag one without a spine card for under $100.

Ah I see. I will have a flashcart but I cannot use a 3.0 card for it? Thanks for the heads up.

I'm open to both TB16 and PCE games. Not limited to one or the other. I hear fantastic things about Ys so I'll add that to my list. I'll also keep my eye on the Dracula X market. If anyone here has a complete copy (with or without spine), let me know).

Edit: Should I get the TB16 or PCE version of Y's I and II? The TB16 version seems to be pretty expensive. But that may just be eBay talking.

Definitely the English version.  It's worth the money, I promise.  Don't bother buying a copy that comes with the map, it just inflates the cost without any real payoff.   I'll see what extra CD games I might have when I get home tonight.  I know that I have an extra JP Monster Lair if you're interested.

Awesome, thanks. I'd be interested in Monster Lair. It looks like a fun game, though I hear it can be really frustrating. Let me know what else you find though!

Riot Zone/Crest of Wolf is a fun and cheapish cd game.

Star Parodier too.

Spriggan may be on the higher end of the spectrum, but i think it can still be found for less than $50 and it's TOTALLY worth it.

Keep an eye out for Last Alert if you like Bloody Wolf style games.  It has the best cheezy voice acting evar!

Alright, looks like I've got Monster Lair (JP) and Fighting Street (US) as far as extra CDs go.  You are welcome to Monster Lair and just let me know if you want Fighting Street as well.

EDIT: Thanks for the recommendations so far everyone. I'm getting more and more interested in a copy of Dracula X as well as Ys I and II if anyone has a copy for sale.

I got an e-mail I think, which I thought was from the PM system, but don't see anything in my PMs from you.  Either way, I just replied to the email, I am sure we'll work something out.

There is a bug in Altered Beast where you can't pass the first level boss without the 1.0 bios. I have one of the low-cost GameofYou flash carts and can confirm that it works fine with the 1.0 bios to get past the first level. I doubt I'll ever beat the game though. :)

Thanks for the info, kind sir. I was thinking of picking this up, so this was helpful. I've been a fan of Altered Beast since my friend played it with me back in the early '90s.

Also, you can beat it, I believe in you! Yeah!

Get the Dragon Slayer SCD. It usually goes for $40. That game rules.

Not sure if I would keep crest of wolf on the list. Its a generic mediocre beat'em up. There are many other games which are better.

I disagree.

First of all I think Crest of Wolf/Riot Zone is actually a pretty decent game.  I admit that it's unremarkable, and the lack of co-op is lame, but overall it's an enjoyable and high-quality title (although too-easy).

As for there being "many other games which are better", well: there are very few belt-scrollers on the PCE, and frankly I don't think any of them are great.  Even Double Dragon II is only "pretty good", and I don't think holds its own compared to some of the superb titles on Genesis or SNES.  Now maybe you meant "many other [non-belt-scrolling] games" but it's pretty hard to compare across genres.  (I mean, sure, I liked Dracula X more or whatever.)

Yeah, toymachine must be off his meds. :) Crest of Wolf/Riot Zone is awesome for a budget(ish) title for these consoles.  It's a total Final Fight rip-off, only not as good as Final Fight.  But there is much enjoyment to be had.

Exactly, it looks nice but its unremarkable and repetitive. It reminds me of a Streets of Rage wanna be. I agree that DD2 is nothing special either, especially for the price it commands. I actually prefer playing the NES port.

My point is that there are many other titles that are much better. Now if he is specifically looking for a "Belt Scroller" options are limited, so why not satisfy that urge on another console and focus on the really outstanding Turbo/PCE games. Not the unremarkable ones.

Haha thanks for the input. I threw it on there probably due to my slight beat em up craving lately and thought exploring the genre on the platform sounded intriguing. It's not on the top of my list but I figured it'd be nice to try at some point. I should probably visit the Streets of Rage series before hand though.

Some games I would recommend from the standard CD would be the Valis games(US or JP)
Exile 1(usually goes for about 40), Shubibiman/shockman 3 for the PC engine(never released in NA)

Super CD I would recommend Macross Eternal Love Song, 2036, Download 2(uncommon, but varies if you want spinecard or not), Forgotton Worlds(arcade perfect port)

If you have extra funds try and get some of these as well: Double Dragon 2, God Panic, Bazar de Gazar, galaxy dekka gayvan, Pop n Magic, Cotton, and Jim Power

Just a few of the games I can think of off the top of my head that are pretty easy to play for non jpn speakers.
