Title: TG-CD damaged via
Post by: kormendi on 04/05/2014, 08:39 AM
I've been working on resurrecting a TG CD for the last few months now.  It had been flashing "PC" on the LEDs and making gear noises, so I replaced all the caps.  After that didn't work, I bought some new gears and I installed those yesterday.  The same behavior, but after adjusting pots for a few minutes, I started noticing a burning smell.  I looked around on the board, nothing felt hot, so I kept at it.  At one point I was even able to get a game to load.

Eventually though, it wouldn't power on at all and I finally noticed a burnt via (circled in red).  The picture is from a different board; that's why it doesn't look burned.

There is no longer continuity through the via, so a I'm considering bypassing it with a wire as drawn in blue.  My concern though is that another component will pop since I've not addressed the original cause.

I should add that if I attach headphones and a supply directly to the unit, it still works great as a standalone CD player.

Any ideas?

When using it standalone that connector is unused, there are few components between DC plug and CD-ROM connector, a diod only to be exact.

Take a look at this page:

So it should be pretty safe to just make a small cable where you painted the blue line, otherwise it should make as much damage when you used the DC plug.

Yes, do it like I did it in the mentioned picture with the blue line.

Works for me without issues since then.

That was it.  It seems to work flawlessly now.  Thanks.
