Title: PC-Engine Duo with bad laser motor
Post by: turbokon on 04/08/2014, 08:27 AM
I just finished recapping a pc-engine duo and the disc still doesn't spin.  Tested the motor that moves the laser with AA battery, sure enough it doesn't work.  Anybody happen to have a spare one or know where I can get one?  I had one spare but gave it to someone that need one a while back.

Took this from one of the guides here.

QuoteThe motor for the laser (silver cylinder, top of photo 4) is a typical 9V motor that can be found at a hobby store and can be tested for continuity with a 9v battery due to the PCE Duo's 9V voltage. It's hard to get the dang thing back in, de-soldering the wire is the easy part, just watch those gears. The very tiny screws are aluminum, and non-magnetic so make sure you have a steady hand if you have to replace the motor. I've only seen one go bad, ever so I would bet this is not the issue. Make sure to add some extra White Lithium Grease at this point to ensure your gears stay properly lubricated.

Just to be sure it's completely dead and not the power to it, try a 9V battery or a universal power supply. If it's rated at 9V as that thread suggests, then a 1.5V battery might not do anything.

It's 9v rated meaning max operating voltage the motor can handle.  It shouldn't take much voltage to turn but yeah I can test it some more.

I've actually used the same motor that goes in a standard TG16 drive as a replacement. Mounts slightly different but works just fine. Holes line up no problem. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5pcs-Wholesale-FF-050-Motor-3-12V-DC-RC-Car-Model-DIY-Shaver-Toothbrush-Motor-/231157654784?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d211e500 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/5pcs-Wholesale-FF-050-Motor-3-12V-DC-RC-Car-Model-DIY-Shaver-Toothbrush-Motor-/231157654784?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d211e500)

And yes I have been starting to come across a lot of DUOs with bad lens motors lately.

Yep, it's dead.

In the mean time, I pulled the motor from another duo I've have yet to refurb.

Will be looking for another motor.

Any motor that has matching screw holes will work (6-20 volt motors)
