Vagrant Story.
Dragon Warrior VII
Wild Arms 1&2
Final Fantasy Tactics (and if you are good enough at strategy get Hoshigami)
Valkyrie Profile
Suikoden I and II
yeah...im not looking to buy anything new, but that reminded me, i do have DW7 as well
if you got 100+ hours to burn then the choice has been made :D

Nice, I have all 4 of those too and still haven't touched them (minus LoD). :( Well, how about starting with Chrono Cross ? Find out how well the sequel was to Chrono Trigger.
Oops, actually, I beat Legend of Dragoon. That's just a generic 4 CD RPG by Sony... Save that one for last! It's forgettable (I think)!
Quote from: guest on 04/30/2014, 09:27 AMI've not played any of them on either list with the exception of FFT, which I would also recommend.
Yeah, I loved Final Fantasy Tactics myself! I wasn't sure I'd like it given that it's a strategy game with RPG elements (never seemed like a fun genre to me, I avoided it), not a RPG, but I just blindly loved Squaresoft in those days (they could do no wrong), so I bought it without hesitation. Wound up enjoying it, was happy I made the purchase.
im also in the middle of Links Awakening...maybe i get through that first.
Grandia
Lunar SSSC
Lunar EB
Final Fantasy I & II
Persona
I would say Lunar EB was the best Working Designs RPG that I ever enjoyed, hands down. And I liked the extra voice-acting bloopers CD too - I know that's hated-on, but I enjoyed getting an inside look into the creative process of localizing a game. I tried to acquire the first Lunar SSSC, but never got around to it. I missed one opportunity at a Game Stop or whatever, never saw another one, and just forgot about it.
Grandia, on the other hand, I really hate it actually and gave up about, I dunno, 20 hours into it. I tried at least 3 times to finish it because I usually have a policy to beat a game at all costs once I start it, but that is one game so far that I've failed with - I would just get so bored out with it... (Add Battletoads for NES to the list too! I'll have to cheat to beat that one some day.)
For fucks sake you knobs, can't you read.
He's asking which of the 4 listed. Not "spew your recommendations at me because you can't read the OP before rubbing yourself on the keyboard".
Play Chrono Cross. Dragon Warrior 7 is good but it's long/tedious/semi brutal at times. Save that for when you've finished Chrono Cross.

Ohh man i love Grandia, Its a bit slow at first, but once you get over the wall the game really opens up and becomes much much better. Plus Feena is to sexy, lol.
As far as your list goes, I would say Chrono cross is the #1 choice. I have played and beaten both cross and dragoon. I havent beat the other 2, don't really remember them to much. But CC does not get the credit it deserves. To many people want to compare it to chrono trigger. But cross is an amazing game in its own right, with one of the best OST's in video games...period

Ah, never heard about its OST greatness, so that'll be nice when I finally do get around to it then. Let's face it, a significant reason why many of us love Ys is because of Ryo Yonemitsu's awesome arrangements on the NEC console versions. I doubt I would have anywhere near the attachment to the Ys series that I do were it not for its glorious OSTs. ;)
Thousand Arms
Beyond The Beyond
Arc the Lad Collection
Ark...give me Arc back!!
Star Ocean - One of my favorite psone games, and the reason why i got into JRPGs
Vandal hearts - really awesome SRPG
Vanguard bandits - the best SRPG EVER!!!!!!

lol that was for a friend.
Just play Chrono Cross!
Or since everyone else is just spewing suggestions without reading comprehension, try Legend of Legaia and Xenogears!
Hydlide

And I just sold off a copy of Arc the Lad Collection too ;)
Chrono Cross is fun, but not as good as trigger IMHO. The soundtrack is amazing like others have said though, it's basically the Chrono Trigger arrange album of the time.
From your list though, I would say BoF IV. It's a solid RPG romp and won't take too long to get into and play through from my remembrances of it.

I like your taste in games sir. I wonder why no one has listed DiscWorld though? Though technically NOT a RPG, but still...storyline and all. A worthy addition to the PS1 library.
If you dont mind dealing with a translation or have a basic understanding of Japanese, Growlanser is the best RPG on PS1.
Star Ocean 2nd Story is a very enjoyable RPG!
Suikoden II  There's rumors it may be coming to the PSN finally !?

Vagrant Story is far and away my favorite PS1 RPG. The story is great and there's a ton of depth to the gameplay, yet it never becomes over-complicated. I really can't think of anything to compare it to, as I haven't played anything else quite like it.

I have both Discworld games. :) Except for Discworld Noir (European release maybe?), but I think that was only released on the PC. I suggest if you are going for a epic go with Dragon Warrior 7 or better yet Temcos Deception.

I'll take that, & hope for 3, 4, & Tactics, but more then anything, I want me a Suikoden 6!

I still have my copy of suikoden II but a psn release would let more people play it.Beside the fact, how valuable the game has become it is one of the best PS1 rpgs.
Breath of Fire is getting no love in here. I'd play Breath of Fire IV first. Didn't really like Chrono Cross much, but maybe I went into it with a 'This is supposed to be a Chrono Trigger sequel' mindset and I don't think I gave it a fair chance. So either BoFIV or Chrono Cross.
I can't suggest BOF IV to someone who didn't play 3 and doesn't have it available.

Me too, I still have all my Suikodens, including the PSP game that still hasn't been localized now that I think about it! I'd purchase it on PSN just to support it!

Why? I liked 4, possibly more than 3...
My recommendations
Grandia
Dragon Warrior VII
Wild Arms
Suikoden I and II
Thousand Arms
Parasite eve, yo.
seriously, potentially my favorite RPG ever.
I would go Vagrant Story. Game is amazing.
Don't even waste your time with any Lunar games post-Sega CD. The SCD versions are infinitely better than any of the remakes.
Grandia on PS1 lost me about 2 hours into it. The voice acting is god awful. Game looks so much better on Saturn.
