From the little bit I've read about this, his family *was* aware and *did* notify the police.  The police questioned him April 30 and apparently didn't see anything majorly wrong with him.

Ah, so a spoiled rich kid then. Yeah, I heard later he's the son of some assistant director (Hunger Games). I had just watched his creepy and twisted confessional video from the early reports. Well, on top of having wealth, he doesn't seem all that bad looking to me... He creeped girls out was the problem if these videos are any indication. Hated everything I saw and read, this guy was one of the sickest people I have ever seen.

Problem is, you cannot really do anything about a nut job until after he is proven a nut.  If you start to institutionalize people that are weird, that wouldn't make sense, because 90%+ of these creeps will never act out on their weirdness.

I've often wondered how something being a "hate crime" makes the same act worse than any other reason?  A guy who gets shot to death because of race is just as dead as if he were shot to death during a robbery, a guy shot to death because some dude's girlfriend cheated on him, a guy shot to death because the dude who shot him just wanted to kill people, or any other reason you'd want to shoot a guy to death.

I don't see how it's worse to murder someone out of bigotry, than it would be to murder that same person to steal their cash.  Both come from a misguided sense of self-importance that devalues human life.  Saying that robbery is "less bad" assumes that -- at least on some level -- we understand and accept why one person would kill another for a chunk of paper.  I don't accept that.  Both are terrible.

Hate crime laws were originally conceived due to public outrage that particular crimes were not being duly prosecuted (i.e., law enforcement was bigoted and failed to investigate certain crimes responsibly).  I get that, and I'm okay with laws that pressure authorities to do their job.  Unfortunately, similar to other laws that are passed to appease sweeping emotions, legislators attached stiffer penalties to hate crimes, which sends the message that assaulting or murdering someone because you hate them (for being a particular kind of different) is worse than assaulting or murdering someone because you value green paper more than you value human life.  It's basically saying immorality is worse than amorality, which runs counter to history.  That kind of kneejerk "emotional legislation" also gave us laws that mandate 10-year sentences for people who use a gun while committing a crime, leading to the infamous situation where a lady was imprisoned 10 years for shooting at a wall.

As for this particular case, since the perpetrator is dead, it doesn't matter if it's a hate crime or not.  But it's interesting that people are labeling it as such.  Based on the killer's own words, there's no doubt that he was motivated by hatred.  However -- as Nightwolve points out -- the actual crime does not mirror the killer's words.  How do you classify it when the deed doesn't match the motive?

That'll probably be a sticky question for some future horrific trial.

It's simple, If a white guys shoots a black guy or any other race for no apparent reason it's a hate/race crime and vice versa. If a man shoots another man for walking in on his wife in bed with him, It's a crime of passion and often times carries a much lesser penalty. In any case the only way I see it fit to take a life is if it is totally necessary  (you or loved ones life is in jeopardy) if we could just kill people for being creepy or weird the world would be a much less inhabited place.

And always remember guns don't kill people, husbands that come home early do :-)
