Title: Turbo CD-Rom box pics
Post by: jelloslug on 07/26/2014, 02:14 PM
Someone ask me to take pics of all sides of the Turbo CD-Rom box.  I have higher res versions too if someone needs them.

I remember walking into Radio Shack and seeing these on the shelf. They had an impressive display of Turbo Grafx as it was really the only gaming console they had some rights to. Those were the days .. life was so much more simple. I recall our store having a showcase of the Turbo Gear items all in neon orange and green. Ball caps, t-shirts, fanny packs. They weren't for sale, but showing what you could mail order from the form that with included in all consoles, and accessories boxes.

I'm fairly certain that the laserdisc that I bought a while back goes to the kiosk on the left.

those look amazing. NEC sometimes gets a bad rep for failing in terms of advertising the product in the USA, but looking at these displays, it seems they did ok or at least tried. The design and colors are just flawless.

I didn't make those posts. Nightwuss hacked into my account and made them for me. I never said those things.

Its amazing that the handle on the turbo cd box holds up.  That thing is so enourmous.  Gives the atari 5200 box a run for its money.

Well, when I got it I took it out of the box and just put the box in my parents attic.  There it sat for many, many years.

If memory serves me there was a sticker there saying soothing about new lower price or free games or something like that.  I know that I paid $299 for it from J & R Music World and I sent off for at least 2 free games when I got it.

STATUS: I asked you to take pics! THANK YOU!

I certainly want the higher-res originals, too  :pcgs:

I kept that box for a few years, back in the day, but it was just too big (my parents attic, ha! Just like jelloslug).  :pcgs:

I love seeing all the panels, it's something that was important for the retail experience that is "lost" when digitization of info prioritized the "fronts" and "covers" of stuff....yeah, I have problems.

TRIVIA: a billion years ago, I made a non-researched (anecdotal, from my own experience) claim that the TG-CD retail box was one of the largest in the history of consumer (non-pro, non-specialty, non-industrial) electronic peripherals. Anyway, I think the comment might still be there.

So, are there any competitors? Within videogameden? Outisde of videogameden?

UPDATE: Sparky has a new project: producing MINIATURIZED versions of the retail boxes for electronics, consoles, peripherals, etc. probably a lot of folks would like a HALF-SIZED NES or SMS or GENNY box. Some folks might even be crazy enough to want a TG-16 or TG-CD box. Of course, a half-sized TG-CD retail box IS STILL BIGGER  than 99%* of the other console boxes.

The Neo boxes were large but pretty thin, not like the cd box thick on all sides

I don't have it anymore but when I still had the box to an AES gold system I remember it being "normal" like every other system boxes.

TG-16 CD box is the biggest video game box, hands down.

There are some toy boxes that are bigger, I am thinking train sets, power wheels, etc.  Video games, there is nothing that compares.
