Title: Hi everyone....it's about time I introduced myself
Post by: Samuray on 08/01/2014, 09:59 PM
Whoa, my account is two years old and I haven't gotten around to posting anything yet. Not cool. [-(

The thing is, I made this account when I got back into retro gaming two exactly two years ago, and then I became occupied with other things. Did some wonderful transactions with jperryss on here recently, though, and now I'm planning on looking in much more frequently.

I'm from Germany, by the way, and got my Turbo Duo when I was around 15 or 16 years old. Been wanting a PC Engine for a long time, ever since 1989, but other systems kept popping up which prevented me from obtaining an NEC machine.
Anyway, when I finally got the Duo, my attention soon wandered to the Sega Saturn and the hot-new PlayStation, so I didn't go beyond the initial batch of games I received with it from my parents. Yes, that's more than regretable, I know...

Anyway, I had those pack-in games that came with the system -- the disc with "Gate of Thunder", "Bonk's Adventure" and "Bonk's Revenge" on it, "Ninja Spirit" and "Ys - Book 1 & 2" -- and I got "Bomberman '94", "Splatterhouse", "Parasol Stars", "Tiger Heli", "Dragon Spirit", "Ninja Warriors" and my personal system seller, "Galaga '88". Along with an adapter for JP cards, of course.

It's almost a gaming crime I didn't pursue PCE collecting any further and turned to those ugly early 3D ganes instead, but what you're gonna do? My mind was young and impressionable.

Luckily I kept everything so I had something of a starting point two years ago. Since then, I've slowly but surely added to my PCE collection which has grown from practically non-existent to tiny, in comparison to most of yours, I suppose. But since I also collect for all those other systems as well, progress is slow.

Here goes:

http://abload.de/thumb/image9yuf0.jpg

Couple of things:

I am aware that front covers would have been more interesting but I didn't want to spam this post with pictures....figured this would do for now.
There are a few dummy cases on the upper left....the two "Bonks" are obviously empty and "Ninja Spirit", being a bundled card, didn't come with a proper case. Notably absent is "Gate of Thunder", which houses the compilation disc....I made those empty "Bonk" cases because I had forgotten about them being on the GoT disc and figured they were lost or stolen or something when I first got all the old systems and games out of the boxes.

Well, my "Gate of Thunder" is at a friend's house who is trying to repair my Duo....CD audio isn't working properly ever since I hooked the system back up in 2012, and I've been trying to get it fixed ever since. This was the reason for me to make this account back then, by the way. The Duo's been recapped (and made JP compatible so I won't need the adapter anymore), with no effect, and now I have obtained a new laser pickup unit. If that won't work....I don't know.

Okay then, now you're all up to date on my PCE situation. By the way, is it frowned upon on this board to post in ancient threads? If there's a "Galaga '90" thread I would like to ask if there are ANY differences from '88 at all, except for the name....but that thread would be many years old, if there is one at all.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome, comrade.

You have a great bunch of games.

(A) Gate of Thunder pack-in shipped in generic jewel box + manual (no tray insert).

However, over the years, several folks have created their own tray insets to print out yourself (someone will provide a link, hopefully).

(B) galaga '88/'90 is, indeed, a great game! I don't think there are any differences, but I'd love someone else whose investigated thoroughly to chime in.

(C) where are you in Germany? I have a friend who lives in Oberhausen. Sadly, he is not interested in video games at all.

(D) join the "game of the week" threads

....huh? What's with Britney Spears?  :-k

But thanks. :)

Quote from: guest on 08/01/2014, 10:46 PMWelcome! And it is about damn time for an intro!

I can tell from your intro that you will become a valued member. By the Gods! Write a "how to newb" book for the masses. :D

Necroposting is fine so long as you're not responding to a WTS/WTB from a decade ago. I'm impressed that you would search to find a post to necropost.

Also, on your duo, there are many great techs in this community. You'll get it sorted out!
Thank you for your kind words, and you're right....I will ask around here if the new laser pickup unit won't so the trick.

Thanks, but I could have more. :)
All those other pesky systems demanding my attention as well....

A) I actually have a printed insert for GoT, the game is just at the friend's house to test if his repair worked once he's done. But thank you for the tip!

C) Oberhausen is far from where I live. :)
I'm in the far north....outskirts of Hamburg, actually.

I BELIEVE I've been to Oberhausen once, though, with an ex-girlfriend many, many years ago.

D) Will certainly look into that, but seeing as how I lack soooo many important titles I'm not sure I could participate much. We'll see. :)

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

No joke, just simply asking if you like gummie dinos. Had 'em on my mind while I read your introduction to all the things. Gosh Darn I could go for some right now.

Welcome aboard!  As far as I know, there's no difference between Galaga '88 and '90 other than the name.

If it wasn't for that Hatris on your shelf, I probably would've written you off as a lost cause.

:) Alright. I'm ashamed to say that I don't think I've ever had gummie dinos. Not sure we have those in Germany. Maybe...
I've had gummie bears, which are great, and stuff like gummie smurfs and gummie snakes and so on. Which  yes, I do like. :)[/quote]

Aww, come on, that's a bit harsh! :)
Many, many people fell for the flashy new systems and abandoned their old ones. At least I kept mine, from NES to Neo Geo.
And I came back to classic gaming. Isn't that what counts?

Anyway, thanks for the "Galaga" info!

Thank you! Just today I was able to add "Toy Shop Boys"....got it for 12,50€ which, I think, was decent.

However, there are sooo many gems missing, I have a long road ahead of me.
